ACOEP’s Spring Seminar CME and Course Objectives

Course Objectives1. Increase clinical knowledge of emergency medicine through an innovative mixture of lectures and hands-on

workshops on practical and administrative processes.

2. Develop and improve basic skills utilized by emergency medicine practitioners in emergency medicine settings.

3. Create an environment in which new physicians will develop presentation and research skills through a series of competitive venues.

4. Review the most updated literature on various topics of emergency medicine.

ACOEP’s Spring Seminar Chair Christopher Colbert, DO, FACOEP

This educational activity is sponsored by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP). ACOEP is an approved provider of AOA Category 1A CME credit. ACOEP has requested that the AOA Council on Continuing Medical Education approve this program for 22.5 AOA Category 1A CME credits for didactic sessions, and up to 27 credits through additional opportunities. Approval is currently pending.

In total, over 37.5 hours of Category 1A CME is available at ACOEP’s Spring Seminar.

Faculty Bios

Michael Allswede, DO is the Director of the Strategic Medical Intelligence (SMI) initiative and serves as a lecturer at the Marshall Institute’s Preventing Terrorism Security Studies course. Dr. Allswede is also a subject matter expert for the INTERPOL bioterrorism unit and a co-author of INTERPOL Bioterrorism Incident Pre-Planning and Response Guide. Dr. Allswede is a co-author of the first accredited disaster medicine fellowship curriculum designed for physicians. Dr. Allswede does not have any relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Kamran Aslam, MD received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical (UTSW) Center at Dallas, Texas. His internal medicine residency was also completed at UTSW/Parkland Memorial Hospital and the Veterans Health Administration. After this he spent two years volunteering in international disasters aid, and working in in the Emergency Department at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas Texas. Dr. Aslam then completed his cardiology fellowship at University of Florida, and trained in Cardiac Electrophysiology under Dr. Eric Prystowsky, who is one of the world’s pioneers in the subspecialty. Dr. Aslam created and established the current Complex Arrhythmia/Device program at Swedish Covenant Hospital (SCH), Chicago Illinois where he also steers the Medical Anticoagulation Clinic. He has remained active in academic endeavors in the form of being a local PI for an international cardiac resynchronization device trial, and proof of concept pilot study regarding personalized anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation. Peter Bell, DO, ‘84 MBA, HPF, FACOEP-D, FACEP is a 1984 graduate University of New England, College of Medicine. He completed residencies in Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine and is board certified in both. He established the first emergency medicine residency at Doctors Hospital in 1991, and has been an attending faculty member at Doctors Hospital for the past 26 years. Dr. Bell was appointed Assistant Dean for the Ohio University CORE system in 1995. He has since completed a two-year Fellowship in Academic Administration at OUHCOM, a Health Policy Fellowship through the AOA/OUHCOM, and in 2002 was promoted to Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine. Since 2002, Dr. Bell has served as Chair of the Ohio Osteopathic Association’s Health Policy Committee. More recently, he was designated Master Clinical Faculty by Ohio University, and in 2012 awarded the Bruce Horton Lifetime Achievement Award by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians where he is also a past president. Dr. Bell is a stakeholder and writes board questions and cases for NBOME and AOBEM.

Gil Binenbaum, MD, MSCE is an attending surgeon at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He lectures frequently on Pediatric Ophthalmology to Emergency Medicine Physicians, as well as to students and trainees from multiple other disciplines. He is an active clinical researcher with support from the National Institutes of Health. His research focuses upon clinical effectiveness in pediatric ophthalmology and eye disorders in infancy, such as retinopathy of prematurity and ocular manifestations of abusive head trauma. Dr. Binenbaum does not have any relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Bentley J. Bobrow, MD, FACEP, FAHA is Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Medical Director for the Arizona Department of Health Services Bureau of EMS and Trauma System. He also serves as associate director of the University’s Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center. Dr. Bobrow’s focus is on implementing and measuring systems of care for time-sensitive emergency medical conditions including out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, STEMI, and traumatic brain injury. He has partnered with public health officials, EMS agencies, hospitals, and the public to develop a statewide reporting and educational network for responding to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, which has resulted in a significant increase in the rates of bystander CPR and a tripling of survival from sudden cardiac arrest in Arizona.

Charles D. Bortle, Ed.D., RRT-NPS, NREMT-P is the Director of the Einstein Center for Clinical Competency, which specializes in high-fidelity simulation for nursing, resident, and fellowship education. He enjoys adjunct faculty positions at Philadelphia University, Arcadia University, and DistanceCME.com. Charlie has a doctorate in Education and a Master’s in Education from the University of Phoenix. He is published in several textbooks and peer-reviewed journals and continues to function clinically as a Respiratory Therapist in his spare time.

Keith Bradley, MD began his undergraduate studies at The United States Military Academy, and completed a B.S. degree at the University of Notre Dame. Following medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine, he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (Drexel). Dr. Bradley served as an Attending Physician at Norwalk Hospital (CT), Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center (South Bronx) and Bridgeport Hospital (CT). He has been on the emergency medicine faculty at New York Medical College and the Yale University School of Medicine. He was the Health Professions Adviser at Fairfield University. He founded and directed the Research Associates Programs at Lincoln, Bridgeport Hospital and now at St. Vincent’s Medical Center (CT). He is the CEO/CMO of the National Alliance of Research Associates Programs (NARAP).

Kenneth H. Butler, DO, FACEP, FAAEM is the Associate Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the University of Maryland where he also holds the academic title of Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Butler is an internationally recognized expert in airway management and a faculty member of the Practice Emergency Airway Management Seminar. He has written multiple textbook chapters on emergency medicine and was awarded the Associate Residency Director of the Year from EMRA and ACEP. Roya Z. Caloia, DO brings a fresh and innovative look at the Emergency Medicine Residency experience. She received her medical degree at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, went on to complete a traditional rotating internship at Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, Florida where she perfected her medical Spanish. She then moved to Michigan to complete her Emergency Medicine Residency training through the Oakwood Health System – where she was chief resident.

Dr. Caloia is a diplomat of the AOBEM and served as Director of Curriculum, Evaluation, and Training before becoming the Assistant Program Director and now the Program Director. Dr. Caloia sits on the RISE Committee as Vice Chair and the MCEP Educational Committee. Dr. Caloia is excited for the future of the program and about continuing to produce excellent Emergency Medicine Physicians. Carmelita J. Colbert, MD is board certified in rheumatology and internal medicine. She attended medical school at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Dr. Colbert completed her internal medicine residency at Advocate Christ Medical Center/University of Illinois at Chicago. Upon completing her training she joined the medical staff as junior faculty and served as the Chief Resident for the 2007-2008 academic year. Her fellowship training was completed at Northwestern University. She began her career as a Clinical Instructor at Northwestern with an emphasis on Clinical Research in Osteoarthritis. Dr. Colbert later transitioned to becoming a Clinician Educator and is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Internal Medicine Residency program at Advocate Christ Medical Center/University of Illinois at Chicago. John W. Graneto, DO, M.ED, FACOEP-D, FACOP, FACEP, FAAP is a 1986 graduate of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. William D. Hampton, DO is a board-certified emergency physician who practices full-time at Holy Family Memorial in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He lectures throughout the United States and in Canada on a regular basis on a variety of emergency medicine topics including “Anaphylaxis and Other Allergic Emergencies,” “Advanced Interpretation of Pediatric & Adult Vital Signs,” and “Clinical Decision Rules from Head to Toe.” He is a clinical assistant professor of Emergency Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine for the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. His other interests include playing trumpet with the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, baking bread, and teaching & practicing yoga. Douglas M. Hill, DO, FACEP, FACOEP-D is an Attending Physician and Past Director, Department of Emergency Medicine, North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton, Colorado and is current Chair of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee at that institution. David E. Hogan, DO, MPH, FACEP is the Research Coordinator Integris Southwest Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency Program and is the Director of Education for the West Division of TeamHealth. He entered service in the United States Army where he completed an Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Fort Hood, Texas. Dr. Hogan attained a Master in Public Health with emphasis in Policy and Epidemiology from A. T. Still University, School of Health Management. Kevin P. Hubbard, DO is Chair of the Department of Medical Specialties and Professor and Chair of the Division of Internal Medicine at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences-College of Osteopathic Medicine. A board certified hematologist/oncologist, hospice/palliative care physician. Dr. Hubbard earned his DO from the University of Health Sciences-College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1986 and served his internship at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital in Tulsa. After internal medicine residencies at the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City and Normandy Osteopathic Hospitals in St. Louis, Dr. Hubbard completed his fellowship in medical oncology/hematology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. B. Bryan Jordan, DO, FACOEP-D graduated from KCUMB-COM in 1989 and completed his residency at St. Barnabas Hospital, in Bronx, New York where he later served as faculty. Y Elizabeth Kassapidis, DO graduated from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1994, and completed her Emergency Medicine residency at St. Barnabas Hospital, in Bronx, New York in 1998. Dr. Kassapidis served as an Army Major stationed in Fort Belvoir, Virginia and 86th CSH, at Fort Cambell, Kentucky. She was also the Assistant Director Emergency Medicine at Dewitt Army Hospital. She is currently and attending physician at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut and lives in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Anne Klimke, MD, MS, FACEP began her EMS career in her home state of Kentucky in 1998, where she worked in rural agencies during her summers home from college at Washington University in St. Louis. Her EMS experience framed her approach to medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Upon her graduation in 2005, she moved to Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia to begin her residency in emergency medicine. During her residency she began working towards her Master’s in Disaster Medicine and Management at Philadelphia University. She completed both her Master’s degree and her EMS fellowship at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia in 2010, and has been core faculty at Einstein Medical Center since then. She also holds a faculty appointment through the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and served as adjunct faculty at Philadelphia University from 2010-2015 as part of their graduate program in Disaster Medicine and Management. Additionally, she serves as a medical team manager for FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue Team, Pennsylvania Task Force 1, based in Philadelphia. She has deployed with the task force for Hurricane Earl, Superstorm Sandy, and the 2015 Papal Visit to Philadelphia. Although she prefers to respond to disasters outside of the hospital, she has also dealt with mass casualty incidents while working in the emergency department, most notably the Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia in 2015.

Brian Moore, MD, FAAP is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency physician at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He did a pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and and Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship in Denver. His first faculty position was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he held numerous positions including pediatric medical director for Mayo Medical Transport. He returned to New Mexico about 10 years ago where he is currently the state EMS medical director. He sits on numerous state and national committees including the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Pediatric Emergency Medicine, the AAP EMS subcommittee, and the National Association of EMS Physicians where he is the Pediatric EMS committee chair. In his off time, he competes in Ironman Triathlons including completing Ironman Arizona here in Phoenix.

Lauren G. Oliveira, DO, RDMS, FAAEM, FAWM is director of the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia. She earned her Bachelor of Health Science from the University of Florida and her degree in osteopathic medicine at Nova Southeastern University on a Navy scholarship. After completing her residency in emergency medicine at Naval Medical Center San Diego, Dr. Oliveira completed fellowship training in Emergency Ultrasound at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Dr. Oliveira is a Fellow of the Wilderness Medicine Society and is actively involved in ACEP as a member of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Chapter and the Emergency Ultrasound Section. She is currently active-duty in the US Navy and has had operational tours with the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan as well as with the NATO Role III Multinational Medical Unit in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Nilesh Patel, DO, FACOEP, FAAEM is a graduate of the Lehigh Valley Emergency Medicine residency program in PA. Currently, he is Associate Residency Director for Emergency Medicine at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. Dr. Patel is chair of ACOEP’s CME Committee. Dan Quan, DO, FAAEM, FACEP is board certified in both emergency medicine and medical toxicology. He is a faculty member with the emergency medicine residency and is the Director of Medical Toxicology at Maricopa Integrated Health System. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona. Ray Quintero currently serves as Senior Vice President of Public Policy at the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in Washington, DC where he oversees the AOA’s diverse federal and state public policy operation, which includes the legislative, regulatory, advocacy, and political functions of the organization. During his tenure he has led the association’s efforts on many issues, including Medicare physician payment, medical liability reform, graduate medical education, delivery system reform, and efforts to implement new delivery models for physicians under both public and private systems. He has also represented the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) as their Director of Government Relations. He previously held government relations positions at Merck Pharmaceuticals and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Quintero was also Vice President of Strategic Alliances at 720 Strategies where he provided grassroots consultation to a variety of health care clients. He began his career in health care government relations as a lobbyist in the Health and Life Sciences practice of B&D Consulting. Rose Anna G. Roantree, DO is an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Orange Regional Medical Center, and is a core faculty member for the emergency medicine residency there. She also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Emergency Medicine at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, medical director of the Town of Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and is a member of the ACOEP EMS Committee. Peter Rosen, MD, FACEP is the original author and current editor of Rosen’s Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice is the founding editor of the Journal of Emergency Medicine and the editor of the influential and respected textbook, Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice, now in its 8th edition. Dr. Rosen has co-edited many other textbooks, including, The Five Minute Emergency Medicine Consult; Protocols for Prehospital Emergency Care; An Atlas of Emergency Medicine Procedures; Emergency Pediatrics; Essentials of Emergency Medicine; Diagnostic Radiology in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Rosen has been Director of the Emergency Medicine residencies at Denver General Hospital/St. Anthony Hospital Systems and the University of Chicago. In 1977 and 1984, Dr. Rosen won the American College of Emergency Medicine’s Award for Outstanding Contributions and Leadership. Y Victor J. Scali, DO, FACOEP-D completed an internship at Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center then served three years as Medical Officer and Commander for the 6943rd ESS at National Security Agency, receiving the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. Dr. Scali is an Associate Professor at PCOM and Assistant Professor at Rowan University, School of Osteopathic Medicine where he is currently Co- Director of the EM and IM/EM residencies. He is a Past President of ACOEP and Past President of FOEM. He is a member of Emergency Medical Services for Children Stakeholders Group in Washington, DC, and a grant contributor to International Center to Heal our Children‘s PETT program at CNMC, and was appointed a member of National Academies of Practice as distinguished practitioner. Currently, Dr. Scali is a key participating grantee in developing a competency based Geriatric Emergency Medicine Residency Curriculum and virtual teaching simulation.

David A. Talan, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, FIDSA received his medical degree from the University of Illinois Medical College in Chicago. He completed his residencies in Internal and Emergency Medicine and fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Infectious Diseases. From 1993 to 2014, Dr. Talan was Chairman of the Olive View-UCLA Department of Emergency Medicine. He is currently faculty of the Department of Emergency Medicine, and Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. He is Professor of Medicine in Residence (Emeritus) at The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He edited and authored the Infectious Diseases Clinics of North America edition on infectious disease emergences. He is principal investigator of a CDC-supported emergency department-based national sentinel network for research on emerging infectious diseases in the United States called EMERGEncy ID NET, which was established in 1995. He is also principal investigator of an NIH contract to study off-patent antibiotics to treat skin and soft tissue infections caused by community-associated MRSA called STOP MRSA, and an NIH R21 grant to study non-operative management of acute uncomplicated appendicitis. Dr. Talan has a research grant with Merck, is a consultant with Allergan and Cempra and is part of a Speakers’ Bureau with Allergan.

Jill M. Tall, PhD is an associate professor at Youngstown State University (YSU). Prior to coming to Youngstown, Jill was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. Jill received her BS in zoology from Arizona State University and her PhD in biomedical sciences, with a focus on pharmacology and neurobiology, from Kent State University in cooperation with Northeastern Ohio Medical University. In 2010 Dr. Tall was awarded a Distinguished Professorship in Teaching at YSU. In 2015, she was appointed as an adjunct clinical instructor in the Department of Family Medicine at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. Annually, Jill provides a seminar to the resident physicians explaining the process of medical research from hypothesis development to manuscript submission. Jill has multiple research articles published in predominately preclinical academic journals. In May 2015, Jill was first author on a manuscript entitled, “Minimal Impact of an Electronic Records System” published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, her first clinical-focused paper.

Judith Tintinalli, MD is a world-renown professor and writer. She is the founding chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hilland is the editor-in-chief of the world’s largest selling emergency medicine textbook, Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine in its 8th (2015) McGraw Hill edition. The 7th edition received the ‘Best Surgical Book of 2011’ from the British Medical Association, and is Editor in Chief of Access Emergency Medicine, the McGraw Hill digital library for emergency medicine. She was a Board Member, and Deputy Editor of the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

She was appointed Editor in Chief of Emergency Physicians Monthly in July 2013. In May, 2013, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of North Carolina Academy of Educators. Dr. Tintinalli was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, and is also Adjunct Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the School of Public Health, and guest lecturer in Medical Journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Tintinalli receives royalties from McGraw-Hill Publications.

Jill Uberti, DO is the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director at St. Joseph Health Centers in Warren, Ohio and chair of the ACOEP’s Residency In-service Exam (RISE) Committee. Dr. Uberti was recently name the DME at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.

The Foundation for Osteopathic Emergency Medicine welcomes you to the 2016 Case Study Poster Competition! Residents and students from across the country are gathered to present unique and topical cases covering a broad range of emergency medicine. Posters are on display on the TVs outside the expo hall as well as on the ACOEP app!

Participants will present their findings on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 in 5 minute presentations with 2 minutes for any Q&A. Presenters will be judged on the following criteria:

1. The topic is relevant to Emergency Medicine2. An in-depth introduction and history of the case is presented3. Breadth of the differential diagnosis4. Life-threatening etiologies covered5. Obscure pathology weighted appropriately 6. Clinical Discussion7. Integration of Presentation and Conclusions8. Poster and Presentation9. Tables and figures are clear and legible10. FOEM Clinical Pathological Case Competition (CPC)WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 20167:30am – 3:30pmThis exciting annual competition pits residents against faculty in diagnosing a difficult case. It takes place during the ACOEP Scientific Assembly. Residents submit the case without final diagnosis, and the faculty member is given one month to develop a diagnosis. Both residents and faculty submit PowerPoint presentations. Each program must have a resident and faculty member in order to participate.

FOEM Oral Abstract CompetitionWEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 201612:30pm – 3:30pmThis annual competition takes place during the ACOEP Scientific Assembly and is open to residents and students that have completed a research project and would like to present it as a PowerPoint presentation (multiple slides, not poster) summarizing their findings.
