Congratulations, Tom!

The Canyon Rotary Club celebrated its 75 anniversary (1928-2003). The celebration was highlighted by an address by Rotarian Andy Smallwood of Pearland, Texas. Andy has served as a training leader at the International Assembly in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, he was a “Trainer of the Trainers” for the International Assembly. His list of Rotarian accomplishments is long and varied at the National and International levels. The festive evening was one to be remembered and was enjoyed by all.

Do some PR! Rotary’s story is a great one to tell. By sharing your club’s accomplishments, you contribute to an accurate, positive image of Rotary in your community. --Midland West Rotary Club

College Rotary group aids in Canyon Cares' holiday needs Canyon Cares has enough food to make manyThanksgivings brighter. But after next week's holiday, pantries will be bare when preparations begin to provideas many as 80 food baskets for Christmas. That's whereRoteract, a new club on the West Texas A&MUniversity campus, is stepping in. The members of theclub, which is sponsored by the Canyon Rotary Club, have chosen to help Canyon Cares as a club project. Thenew club is composed of 18 members, 10 of which areinternational students. Large boxes will placed Tuesday in Canyon businesses,in which customers and employees, alike can place non-perishable food items. Also, on Dec. 10 and again Dec. 13, students will walkneighborhoods to collect food items. These donationswill be delivered to Canyon Cares. Unfortunately, thefruits of several recent food drives have gone instead tothe food bank in Amarillo. For Canyon Cares to obtainthose donations, it must buy back the food. Here are food items that are needed for Christmas baskets:

Canned fruit. Canned corn and green beans. Canned cranberry sauce. Canned pumpkin. Evaporated milk. Boxes of Jell-O Stove Top stuffing. Baskets will be completed Dec. 19-20 with rolls and turkeys. George Hamontree of Canyon Cares said Tuesday that hisgroup would save about $1,000 if Canyon residents donated aturkey. Currently, Lowe's Grocery Store is offering 10-12pound turkeys for a penny for customers who spend at least$50 at the store through Tuesday, Dec. 2. The Rotary Club'sdonation of 26 turkeys for Thanksgiving, he said, savedCanyon Cares about $300. Money donations to the nonprofitorganization also are appreciated. With the holiday spirit in the air, December — Family Month on the Rotary calendar — is a good time for the Rotary world to focus on the "Family of Rotary" initiative launched at the start of 2003-04. Aimed at encouraging clubs and districts to provide more opportunities for family members to participate in service and fellowship, the initiative also spotlights the many individual families that boast several generations of Rotarians.

These three words express the fundamental instinct we all share — to reach out in fellowship and service, to Lend a Hand wherever it is needed — in our clubs, in our vocations, in our communities and in our world.

We will Lend a Hand to alleviate abject poverty Lend a Hand to educate the illiterate Lend a Hand to relieve the scourge of disease Lend a Hand of fellowship to all of the family of Rotary.
