30th MarchDear Friends,

Your letter was like warm sunshine in my mailbox. It is a wet day here in New Zealand. The thirsty garden is drinking the rain, and the cats come into the house with wet fur. Have you ever had a wet cat on your lap? It is not very comfortable. A little while ago, my big tabby cat, Grace, sat on my desk and dried herself on a heap of letters. Grace’s wet fur has made the paper squishy and the ink blurred. Some of those letters were from my friends in Hong Kong.

Paragraph 2I often think of the young

people I met in Hong Kong. You all have very beautiful smiles. I carry your smiles in my memory. When I feel tired or sad, I remember your faces. Your smiles make a little light go on inside me. Thinking about your smiles makes me smile. That’s the good thing about smiles. They get passed on, even across great distances, and they make a lot of people happy.

Paragraph 3 I miss Hong Kong. Apart from all my friends, I miss the wonderful food you have in Hong Kong. I try to make Cantonese food here, but it’s not the same. What is your favourite food? I like dumplings and also chicken rice.

Paragraph 4, 5

My cats send you lots of purrs, and I send you love from New Zealand.

Your friend, Auntie Joy

Paragraph 4, 5I have many favourites, but I

do not wish to eat mice! My cats don’t know this. Sometimes they think I look hungry and they try to feed me. I find a dead mouse on my desk or on the floor by my bed. I say thank you to the cat, then I put the mouse in the garbage. No, I couldn’t eat a mouse, not even if it was covered in chocolate.
