has never been greater. All of us have an important role to play in supporting such initiatives; we

must recognise that non-action is simply not an option, and that we rest on our laurels at our

peril.

It’s saddening to see that those groups and individuals who enjoy creating disharmony and divi-

sions in our society have recently been enjoying a renaissance, of sorts, over this last year. We

may not like it, but one of the unfortunate side-effects of this harsh economic downturn that

we’re experiencing is an increase in support for right wing groups across the UK and Europe.

Many sane voices from people such as the Archbishop’s of both Canterbury and York can be

heard publicly condemning the likes of the BNP and its ilk, but worryingly, the number of Islamo-

phobic and anti-Semitic attacks continue along a seemingly inexorable upward trend.

The GPU offers a crucial platform for interfaith dialogue and exchange of ideas towards fostering

mutual understanding between people from every faith and background in a bid for greater com-

munity cohesion.

The GPU exhibition is an excellent place, facilitating great business opportunities alongside fam-

ily entertainment, sporting and educational programmes.

It’s going to be a weekend of hope and reflection that will present the possibilities of change in

the lives of many. Join me and help shape these changes for all of us.

The Royal Regency Fundraising Dinner:

This event was organized by local young volun-teers from the heart of East London with the as-sistance of Islamic Relief. Inspiring youngsters lead the way in putting the event together from start to finish in just an amazing four days. They worked tirelessly through the long days in Ramadaan, always having the best interests of those suffering in Pakistan. Sponsors were col-lected, tickets were designed, printed and dis-tributed and after four very long days and nights, Alhamdhulillah, 400 tickets were eventu-ally sold. On the day, there were many guests sitting amongst the crowd. Shiekh Babikir (a Sheikh from Sudan) inspired the hearts of many with a short and simple speech. Local politicians and community leaders were also present. The night started with a touching words and pictures, clearly those that attended were moved by what they saw, and ended beautifully with the smile of achieving £50,000. The event was unique and special in many ways, but most importantly due to the efforts of the young brothers and sisters, who volunteered their time and energy in such a diffi-cult period for many people. Well done to the brothers and sisters from Newham and the Islamic Relief volunteers for

the amazing job and efforts. May Allah accept our efforts and bless you and your family.

HELP REQUIRED WITH RESEARCH ON MUSLIM WOMEN WEARING VEIL IN LONDON I am final year geography student at the University of Durham. For my undergraduate dissertation I have chosen the topic of Muslim Geographies, focusing on the lived experience of young Muslim women who choose to wear a headscarf or veil in London. As part of this research I would like to hold a number of in depth discussions with women within the next 2 months to hear about their experiences of London as Muslim women. If there are any women who could offer assistance with my research I would be interested to hear from you. I understand that due to Ramadan it is most probably a very busy time of the year so any help would be appreciated. For further information please e-mail Francesca at [email protected]

Utrujj Foundation presents:

EXPLANATION OF SURAH YASEEN

by Shaykh Haytham Tamim

Dates: Saturday 23rd October & Saturday 30th October 2010 Time: 9.30 am - 5.00 pm (both days) Venue: Muslim World League, 46 Goodge Street, London, W1T 4LU

Would you like to strengthen your heart? Would you like to understand the meaning of the Surah that is de-scribed as the heart of the Qur'an? Then come along to this two day course on the explanation of Surah Yaseen.

Surah Yaseen has an extremely special rank amongst the chapters of the Qur'an. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) has said that "Indeed everything has a heart, and the heart of the Qur'an is Yaseen." (Al Bazzar) It has also been narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said: "Recite Yaseen for your dead." (Imam Ahmad, Al Na-sa'i)

Why has it been called the heart of the Qur'an and what is Allah trying to tell us by this? What does it mean to recite it for the dead? This course will go through an explanation of the verses and provide an insight into why it is so important for us in our daily lives. Allah has revealed the Qur'an in order to help us, and this Surah is described by scholars as one which is recited to strengthen the heart. It covers the fundamental aspects of faith which we all need to ingrain into our hearts in order to pass the test of this life. These are Oneness of Allah, Prophethood of Muhammad (pbuh), and Certainty of the Resurrection.

Canary Wharf Muslim Association [WharfMA] presents: AN EXPLANATION OF SURAH AL-MAIDAH with Ustadh Hafiz Abdullah Muhammad* Date: Tuesday 26th October 2010 Time: 6pm - 9pm Venue: Idea Store Canary Wharf, Churchill Place, Canary Wharf, London E14 5RB Surah al-Maidah („The Table-Spread‟) is the 5h chapter of the QurÂ‟an and one of the last Surahs to be re-vealed. It is named after the story of the Feast (Maidah) connected with the Disciples of Jesus that appears at the end of the Surah. The Surah is named after this story because it is an anecdote that sums the whole Surah's focus, covenants. It also shows that when a person accepts to enter into a covenant with Allah, they are expected to fulfil their obligation or else endure severe consequences. Surah al-Maidah complements the discussion in the previous Surah on social obligations. This Surah starts with the command to „fulfil the covenants‟ (v.1) which not only encompasses covenants between people, but also covenants between Allah and His servants. The Surah then draws many analogies from the history of the People of the Book who did not honor their covenants with Allah. Believers are requested to study the consequences of such deviations and avoid falling into the same mistakes as previous nations. It is for the central theme of this chapter that it is also given the name Surah al-„Uqood (Covenants). All welcome - Notes included Please bring a copy of the Quran and a pray mat with you. Attendance of previous sessions not necessary and no pre-requiste knowledge required. Cost is £10 per session and to confirm your place please please email your name, mobile, and number of people attending to [email protected]. Limited spaces only and entrance via bookings to guarantee places and spaces offered on a first come first basis. For more information please contact: Tel: 07837 645 758 E-mail: [email protected]

Muslim Aid has called for governments worldwide to re-double their efforts to building more informed and resilient communities in the face of natural disasters. In a statement marking the UN International Day for Natural Disaster Re-duction on 13 October 2010, a Spokesperson for Muslim Aid said:

“The last decade has seen some major disasters from the Indian Ocean Tsunami to the devastating earthquakes in Indonesia, Pakistan and Haiti, and from the disastrous consequences of drought in West Africa to the wide ranging flood catastrophes in Bangladesh and Pakistan. The inter-connected issues of climate change, global warming and reducing carbon emissions by both the industrialised countries and emerging economies are on the global agenda of the UN conferences and other international meetings. Globally, countries need to invest more in creating public awareness about managing climate change and making disaster mitigation a part of their national climate change strategies. The communities that are affected the most are always the poor and vulnerable. Governments and international NGOs also need to work together to prepare integrated development programmes which include prevention, mitiga-tion and preparedness in order to help communities live safely and with dignity and independence.”

Muslim Aid has implemented a number of disaster reduction programmes to ensure safer habitats as communities across the world have lost their loved ones, households and livelihoods and have no ac-cess to basic services such as healthcare, education and water due to natural disasters. Muslim Aid has also incorporated a number of disaster reduction strategies from flood mitigation programmes in Indone-sia to earthquake resistance housing and insulated shelter in Pakistan.

Physical activity can prevent grey matter shrinkage

Walking more than six miles a week could reduce your risk

of developing memory problems according to research published in

the online issue of Neurology today (Wednesday,

13 October 2010). As part of a large study, scientists at the University of Pittsburgh asked 299 adults,

with an average age of 70, how far they walked each week. Nine years later they measured brain size

and found people who walked between six and nine miles each week had greater grey matter volume

than those who walked less. Volume was not maintained any better for those who walked more than

nine miles. After 13 years, almost half of the people had developed some form of cognitive impairment.

Maintained volume in certain parts of the brain was found to help reduce this risk.

Alzheimer’s Society comment

„This study provides further evidence that a healthy heart can lead to a healthy brain. One of the benefits

of this research is that it eliminates the impact other socio-economic factors may play and focuses spe-

cifically on walking rather than exercise more generally.‟

„Although a link has been found between lack of exercise and brain shrinkage, we need more research

to find out why physical activity may affect the brain. The best way to reduce your risk is to take regular

exercise, eat healthily, don‟t smoke and get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked.„

I‟m a great believer in the concept

of „Seeing is Believing‟ and that

was one of the main reasons for

wanting to go out to Pakistan to

help with the floods. I travelled for

10 days, to the worst effected ar-

eas in the country, in an effort to

help with aid work as an emer-

gency volunteer.

Page 22

Brotherhood in the Heart

Whilst I was out there I noticed

homes which were swept away,

extinct livestock, no food, no clean

water, water borne infections, no

medical facilities whatsoever and

the list just goes on. With over 20

million people affected, and out of

those 6 million had still not re-

ceived any aid whatsoever, I didn‟t

even scratch the surface.

All credit must go to the workers of

Muslim Hands, who are doing an ab-

solutely fantastic job in providing sup-

port and aid to most needy. They

seem to have an uncontrollable drive

to make the world a better place and

be the first ones to help out. The work

they are doing in Pakistan is so es-

sential, considering the government is

doing nothing, to help its own people.

You could clearly see that due to the

fact that the government is not carrying out its duties, it is left to charities like Muslim

Hands, to carry the burden and do all the work. Cont.

Volunteering in a disaster zone

was a first hand and life changing

experience for me and is some-

thing I have always wanted to do

but have never had the courage

to do so or always made excuses

to back out. However once I got

out there, I have to say, it was

one of the best experiences of my

life. It made me realise that we

are so fortunate with all the luxu-

ries we have at our disposal, yet there are people in this world who have nothing.

Therefore I have made a decision to ensure that I continue to fundraise and do what-

ever is in my power to help the people who are less deprived then me.

When I came back I de-

cided to run the half mara-

thon on the 10th October

2010, in order to try and

raise money for the suffer-

ing children in Pakistan. If

you would like to donate

to this worthwhile cause

please go to

www.justgiving.com/flood.

In the next few months I

also hope to set up a few

medical institutions in the

most required locations.

O you who believe! Eat not up your property amongst yourselves in vanities: but let there be amongst you traffic and trade by

mutual good-will: nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily Allah has been to you Most Merciful. [Al Qur’an 4:29]

HMC was born essentially out of one concern and one concern only;

to be able to provide assurance that we are eating genuine Halal, not just “because it says Halal… it must be Halal!"

HMC is the product of a particular, prolonged situation – a situation of deceit

and treachery. Muslims are being betrayed by individuals & corporations whose only concern is making fast, easy money. Using 'blessed blades', pre

recorded Bismillah, captive bolts, electrified water and even pork proteins; the hard-earned Halal cash of many is being used to buy Haram. HMC has

therefore, shouldered the enormous responsibility of discharging an obliga-tory duty on behalf of you, the community at large. Help HMC to Help You!

Every city in the world has a footballing rivalry. In Scotland the old firm, in Spain, el clasico and famously the battle of the mancs and scousers. 10.10.10 was no different. FC Catalans came toe to toe with London A{SA youth. A tie talked about since the league was formed but more importantly all week long. After all the hype and talking off the pitch it was time for both teams to show just how good they were. Catalans coach Ruudy named an unchanged side, playing the same 4-5-1 for-mation that‟s seen his boys win 3 from 3 and claim the top of the league spot, while London APSA were looking for their 2nd win playing their 2nd game. With 2 games in hand this was a chance to swing the title pendulum on their side. The game started with a pretty slow tempo. It seemed there were a lot of nerves on the pitch from both sets of players. Shots were taken from well outside the box and none testing the keeper. With about 20miutes played Catalans worked the ball down the left. Vinesh, who had a hat-trick of hat tricks prior to this game, turned into provider feeding a lovely through ball to Yusuf. One on one with the goalkeeper Yusuf took his shot. The ball swerved left to right, proving to be very confusing. Did the ball cross the line? With the help of the linesman the referee gave the goal and the boys in yellow were 1-0 up. The boys still hadn‟t moved out of 2nd gear, and this proved costly. For the rest of the half APSA were the dominant side. Playing the ball beautifully around the park and forcing Catalans to stay in their own half. At times it was almost as if Catalans were playing with a back eight rather than a back four. Abid Patel was the only reason APSA hadn‟t scored yet. Clearing the ball off the line not only on one occa-sion but 3. APSA had most of the possession and they made it count not long after. After failing to clear the ball on 3 separate occasions the ball was in the back of the Catalans net. 1-1. APSA were now in control. Catalans seemed to run out of ideas and just before halftime they took a double blow. London APSA scoring 2 goals within a minute. Catalans were 3-1 down and it seemed they were destined for their 1st loss of the season. Ruudy had to do something. A stern half time team talk and 2 substitutions was the choice. As well as a hairdryer from the gaffer, skipper Adam Polli also had a few harsh words for his team. Talha replaced Zinho on the right wing and Omar made way for Safraz. Ruudy had changed to 4-4-2 in hope his side would go out on the attack. However, the start of the 2nd half was the same as the 1st one ended. Catalans were on the back foot yet again and Abid was penalised for bringing down a player in the box. APSA having the chance to make it 4-1 and claim 3points. After having to re-take the penalty that‟s ex-actly what APSA did. With only 20mins to play and trailing by 3 goals it seemed almost impossible for Catalans to take any-thing from this game. A long ball was sent up the park by Catalans captain and it fell perfectly for guess who? Yes, that man Vinesh, who chipped the ball delightfully into the back of the net. 4-2 the boys in yellow were trailing. Ruudy then made 1 more swap. Yusuf coming off and being replaced by Pele. An inspired substitution it proved to be. All the pressure was now coming from Catalans. And they earned themselves a penalty. Vinesh stepped up to calmly slot the ball into the back of the net. 4-3 and it was game on again. With 12 minutes now left to play the Catalans had to go all out. Switching to a 4-3-3 the message was clear and simple. Score 1 more time. And so they did. Substitute Pele hitting a left footed shot from just inside the box, taking a deflection on its way to finding the net. Catalans were ecstatic. The impossible had become more than possible. And there were still 5minutes to play. Tensions were running high from both camps. 1 final substitution proved vital. Yusuf was re-introduced replacing Sa-fraz. And within 30 seconds of coming on he won his side a penalty. Up stepped Vinesh. All the pres-sure on his shoulders. He calmly slotted in the penalty and completed his hat – trick. El – vino now has 4 hat tricks in 4 games. The comeback was complete. From 4-1 down with 20 minutes to play to being 5-4 up with 2mins left. It was simply remarkable. The final whistle blew and the celebrations were expect-edly wild! Forget Man Utd ‟99 and Liverpool‟05. This was simply incredible. Great determination and pure heart was the difference in the end. 12 points from 12 and sitting proudly on top of the league. These youngsters have one eye on the trophy but there are still many games to play. One thing that is clear though. LA FAMILIA is the team to beat!

After Thursday nights subdued match

against Basildon and post Bilal Bapu's

chillng injury, APSA were unsurprisingly

slow of the mark.

Southend were com-

fortable at home, but

had to work hard to

break down a very

stubborn APSA de-

fence. Both sides had

chances in the first

half, with APSA's

Tousani coming close

with a stinging shot

which shaved the

post

Steve Brown in the APSA goal was called

into action a num-ber of

times, Msiska was busy in the APSA

area and nearly fired home the

opener on 22 min-utes. Brown's fan-

tastic agility was up

to the task.

The 2nd half was

where Manor took the lead through

Stubbs in the 59th minute. With APSA

chasing the game, Manor were attack-

ing on the break and making life very

difficult for Langton

and Cole who al-though marshalled

the defence well could not contain

the oppositions pace.

An unfortunate mis-

take led to Smith scoring Manors 2nd

and APSA were un-able to reply with

only 6 minutes re-maining.

John Higley " We

were worked hard, but had no luck to-

day. We could well have been two up

ourselves, but sometimes the rub

of the green is what you need. I can't

the fault the boys

for their effort and I look forward to the

return game against Basildon in
