International Summit

The Mosaic International Summit 2011, sponsored by Prudential Corporation Asia as global part-

ner, will be held in Qatar in November 2011. Delegates from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bang-

ladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia

(resident in Kenya) Turkey UAE and UK will be taking part. The main application process has

closed, however we are still looking for delegates from Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Turkey. If

you are a national and resident of one of these countries and are between the ages of 25 and 35 and

would like to apply, please email [email protected]

British candidates must be either an existing member of the Mosaic network, or have a personal

referral from a member of the Mosaic network. Applications close at 1600 (GMT) on 18th March.

Mosaic works towards a more integrated and thriving society where all individuals, regardless of

background, are supported in realising their potential. Mosaic was founded by HRH The Prince of

Wales in 2007.

The Mosaic International Summit offers young leaders the opportunity to take part in an excit-

ing leadership development programme. The 2011 Summit builds upon the programmes of previ-

ous years, and will provide world class speakers, leadership workshops and the opportunity to be-

come part of a vibrant international network of young leaders committed to positive change.

The Summit aims for delegates:

1) to develop leadership ability and an aspiration to be an agent of change

2) to develop understanding of key global issues and inspire positive thinking to address them

A critical part of the leadership programme follows the Summit, where particpants are supported

in their leadership journey by Mosaic. Participants report back on their development and commu-

nity work every 3 months for a year following the Summit and take an active part in Mosaic's in-

ternational network.

The last Summit was held in July 2010. The workshops, activities and lectures that took place in

the first week covered issues such as environmental sustainability, global poverty and inter-

cultural relations. The second week was then spent on regional study tours to Manchester, Brad-

ford, London and Birmingham during which the participants had the chance to visit projects in the

UK which brought to life the issues that had been discussed. Since the Summit, the alumni of the

programme have been involved in a wide variety of community work, from setting up local librar-

ies to volunteering at children's shelters.

Welcome to Dawah Shirts. Our shirts and products are designed to be a potential tool for Dawah, inviting to Islam. Dawah can be done with close friends or people you meet on the street. Sometimes, especially with strangers, it can be difficult to start calling to Islam out of nowhere, and many people may be turned off by this approach. These shirts are meant to be conversation starters. With many different styles and de-signs, you can find the perfect shirt that suits you and gets people all around you in-terested in learning more about Islam.

Review: Prophetic Timeline ‘SubhanAllah!’ that was my first exclamation as Prophetic Timeline, the latest Islamic web project, loaded onto my browser (http://prophetictimeline.com/). More than just interac-tive, the project by a Muslim Research and Development Foundation (MRDF) based in the UK puts together all of the important events in our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW’s life (and meaningful events before) into a cogent, coherent and meaningful pres-

Page 76: TMS 30

The Prophetic Timeline categorizes the ‘pivotal moments’ in the life of our beloved Prophet SAW. The time-line begins from 2000BC, the period before the birth of Rasulullah SAW, to the point of his (SAW) death, giving us a comprehensive and wide overview of the beautiful and momentous points in his (SAW) life, and help us gauge the length and breadth of his (SAW) journey through his years of da’awah. What I love best about the website is that users can look at all of the important events relative to one an-other. Even better, click on any part of the timeline and you will be spoilt for choice as to what to LEARN! You can choose to:

look at the events and incidents that took place during the period/year you have selected (the calen-

dar),

listen to an audio narration of the event (the microphone),

ponder over the lessons and the wisdom behind the event (the quill in the inkpot),

look at the edicts or rulings pertinent to the year and finally,

read about polemical rebuttals to certain contentious narratives related to the year. Apart from the site’s signature Prophetic Timeline, you can also read the last sermon by the Prophet (SAW) (encapsulated in an interactive scroll) or read a beautiful account of the Beloved’s (SAW) self and charac-ter. An upcoming development is the exciting Sirah Map, which will make use of satellite technology to trace the quest of Nabi Muhammad SAW. This is such a great ni’mah for those who have always wondered how we can all learn the Sirah Nabawi-yah in a more meaningful manner, be it educators, parents, youths and individuals. I am sure you have al-ways felt a little overwhelmed by the thousands of biographies on Allah’s Beloved (SAW) but now you can supplement all that reading with an interactive interface that lets you consolidate all the events or refer to them quickly when you need to. It is also definitely a useful and meaningful tool for learning and reflecting. Most importantly, the Prophetic Timeline is proof that technology need not serve against Islam; in fact, cou-pled with knowledge and the right skills, topped off with the right intentions, something as wonderful as the Prophetic Timeline can benefit the Ummah to no end. To end off, a most beautiful quote obtained from the site from the Prophet SAW at his (SAW) deathbed: “Treat your women well, and do not oppress your servants, the prayer, the prayer, don’t be neglectful of the prayer. O God, my highest companion, O highest companion.” May Allah bless the creators of the website, and bless us with syafa’ah as we learn to keep loving Rasulul-lah SAW everyday!

De-Clutter your mind.

A key part of being productive, is about focusing your mind on what’s beneficial and de-cluttering it from unproductive thoughts.

If we can record our inner thoughts and replay them to ourselves each day, we’ll be shocked at how much junk there is and how

much brain power we waste on futile things that neither benefit or harm us. These thoughts can be in the form of replaying old

“movies” in our heads of things that happened to us in our past or (going to some extreme) future dreams that are never attainable

nor part of reality, or keeping thoughts which we’re not happy to reveal to anyone, even having doubts back-biting about people

which we needn’t have… all these thoughts need to purged if we want to relieve ourselves and de-clutter our minds.

How do you know if you have so much clutter? Notice your actions and speech. If you recognise them to be very focused,

very productive, very thoughtful, and containing less gossip, then your mind is probably more de-cluttered than others! If not, and

you see yourself all over the place and your tongue out of control, then your mind surely needs a cleanup exercise.

Unfortunately, we pay little attention to our thoughts and what goes on inside our mind, even though it’s crucial to our well-being,

productivity and ultimately how we behave as Muslims.

Ibn Al-Qayyim has a profoundly powerful statement in his book Al-Fawaid, referring to negative and sinful thoughts, he said:

“You should repulse a thought. If you do not do so, it will develop into a desire. You should therefore wage war against it. If you

do not do so, it will become a resolution and firm intention. If you do not repulse this, it will develop into a deed. If you do not

make up for it by doing the opposite thereof [the opposite of that evil deed], it will become a habit. It will then be very difficult for

you to give it up”

“You should know that the initial stage of every knowledge that is within your choice is your thoughts and notions. These

thoughts and notions lead you into fantasies. These fantasies lead towards the will and desire to carry out [those fantasies].

These wills and desires demand the act should be committed. Repeatedly committing these acts cause them to become a habit. So

the goodness of these stages lies in the goodness of thoughts and notions, and the wickedness of these thoughts lies in the wicked-

ness of thoughts and notions.” [Al Fawaid, Ibn Qayyim]

May Allah be pleased with him! A deep insight into something so subtle. We should all memorize these words and use it when-

ever we feel unable to control the tsunami of negative thoughts that overtake our minds.

There’s a verse in the Quran that should send shudders through any Muslim’s spine, in which Allah (Subahanahu Wa Ta’ala)

speaks of taking into account our inner thoughts, He says:

“To Allah belongeth all that is in the heavens and on earth. Whether ye show what is in your minds or conceal it, Allah Calleth

you to account for it. He forgiveth whom He pleaseth, and punisheth whom He pleaseth, for Allah hath power over all

things.” (Quran, Surat Al-Baqarah, Verse 284).

In an age, where people are fighting for privacy, some people might find the above verse “intrusive”! But who are we to judge

what Allah does?! We’re His slaves and He’s our Master! He can do what He wills. The reason I’m saying this, is because believe

it or not, the Companions of the Prophet, also found the above verse difficult to grasp (but in their case, they understood the im-

plication, though we unfortunately, rebel due to arrogance). So they went to the Prophet with a heavy heart regarding this verse,

but the Prophet told them “Say, we Listen and we Obey”. As soon as they said that, Allah revealed 2 of the greatest verses in the

Quran:

“The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believeth

in Allah, His angels, His books, and His apostles. “We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of His apostles.”

And they say: “We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys.”

On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it

earns. (Pray:) “Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou

didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant

us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith.” (Quran, Surah Al-

Baqarah, verses 285-286)

So, listen and obey and work out how to control your thoughts and Allah will not overburden you.

Here are some simple steps you can follow to de-clutter your mind and control thoughts, but they need to be constantly followed

in order to develop a disciplined mind:

1. Dua – First and foremost, ask Allah for help and guidance on this issue. Remember “You Alone we Worship, and You alone

we seek help from”.

2. Practise focusing your mind – especially during Salat – so that you at least de-clutter your mind, even temporarily.

3. Listen “into” your thoughts and don’t let them just wave by unnoticed. A strong Muslim is the one who can control his

inner self as well as his limbs.

4. When a bad thought comes, fight it! And when a good thought comes, act upon it or at least write it down!

Be constantly watchful of your mind, like a predator, always ready to pounce on any unwanted thoughts and cutting evil from

its roots.May Allah (Subahanahu Wa Ta’ala) help us de-clutter our minds and make our thoughts, actions and words sincerely for

Him. Ameen.

Madinah Tun-Nabi

There was merriment and joy, a smile on the face of every girl and boy. The streets of Yathrib welcomed in the prophet of Allah, Muhammad, sullallahu alayhi wa salaam. A full white moon shone down upon the land, rising from the valley between hills of sand. Being grateful to Allah was The Prophet's demand, spreading peace through the streets of Madinah. Madinah Tun-Nabi, Madinah Tun-Nabi, The city of the prophet is like home to me. I'll travel through the world but I doubt that I will see A city with such wonder as Madinah. Now the narrow winding roads are so full of history, streets shake with the azan from Masjid un-Nabi. I feel the shadow of the prophet gently cooling me as I walk through the streets of Madinah. Madinah Tun-Nabi, Madinah Tun-Nabi, The city of the prophet is like home to me. I'll travel through the world but I doubt that I will see A city with such wonder as Madinah. The man who reads Qur'an `neath a date

palm tree, And the smile from the child on the street selling tea, Enchant me with their beauty and their simplicity As I walk through the streets of Madinah. Madina Tun-Nabi, Madinah Tun-Nabi, The city of the prophet is like home to me. I'll travel through the world but I doubt that I will see A city with such wonder as Madinah. Al Madinatul Munawarah, Oh enlight-ened city! Al Madinatul Munawarah, even in my sleep you call to me. Time has hurried by, time has traveled on so fast And though wisdom and truth will al-ways last I wish, I wish, I wish that I could climb into the past And live with the Prophet in Madinah. Madinah Tun-Nabi, Madinah Tun-Nabi, The city of the prophet is like home to me. I'll travel through the world but I doubt that I will see A city with such wonder as Madinah. My heart is never far from the home of the Ansar And the city of the prophet, Al-Madinah.

HMC was born essentially out of one concern and one concern only;

to be able to provide assurance that we are eating genuine Halal, not just “because it says Halal… it must be Halal!"

HMC is the product of a particular, prolonged situation – a situation of deceit

and treachery. Muslims are being betrayed by individuals & corporations whose only concern is making fast, easy money. Using 'blessed blades', pre

recorded Bismillah, captive bolts, electrified water and even pork proteins; the hard-earned Halal cash of many is being used to buy Haram. HMC has

therefore, shouldered the enormous responsibility of discharging an obliga-tory duty on behalf of you, the community at large. Help HMC to Help You!

has struggled to make a real impact since his transfer from Bowers and Pitsea at the turn of the year. He has struggled with injury and has found it diffi-cult to settle in the 1st team, but now all that is all be-hind him.

“If I get one goal, others will follow, that’s the type of player I am, you just watch me now” said the young at-

in the two nil victory.

Antony Lane fi-nally broke his drought and scored his first goal for the club

tacking mid-fielder.

Apsa wrapped up all the points after Greg Akpele scored his third goal in as many matches and suddenly APSA seem to have found the consis-tence goal scorers they have been looking for all season.
