    Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT

Manipal, is extremely proud to announce i

participation in the 2012 SAE BAJA US

    Competition in Madison, Wisconsin.

talented and enthusiastic team of studen

from various disciplines of engineering a

involved in making an Off-Roader, for thcompetition organized by the Society

    Automotive Engineers (SAE). Th

competition is scheduled to be held from th

    7th to 10th of June, 2012.

TEAM MANIPAL RACING is into its 3rd year

manufacturing an ATV. The team has shown

tremendous improvement since its inceptioin the year 2009. TMR was one of the thre

teams in Asia to participate in this prestigio

competition at SAE Baja Wisconsin 2009 an

SAE Baja Rochester 2010. Its an excelle

opportunity for students to apply th

classroom knowledge gained to the rea

    world. Manipal Institute of Technolog

pledges full infrastructural support to TeaManipal Racing. However, a project of th

    magnitude, for its successful completio

would require support from the corporat

    sector, institutions and philanthrop

    personalities as well.

We take this opportunity to invite you to be

proud partner of this ambitious project. W

would like to have you as a partner in th

Project and support the students in t

design and production of the Car. Th

partnership benefits are listed in th

brochure. We hope that you would suppo

    this student -driven venture generously.

    The Society of Automotive

Engineers (SAE), a 100-year oldinternational organization formobility engineering professionals

holds an annual Baja DesignCompetition at the internationa

level and national level. The aim of

the participants is to designfabricate, test, market and race a

single seat off-road car prototypethat will withstand stringent test

conditions laid down by the SAE.

Each year, about 100 teams from

across the world converge at the

SAE Baja USA Competition to showtheir planning, marketing andmanufacturing skills. The off-roaders are judged on the ability to

traverse a harsh off-road coursewithout succumbing to the rigors of

    it.

Teams fight to have their designaccepted for manufacturing by afictitious firm.

Additionally, students areresponsible for raising all of the

funds necessary to compete, whichadds a significant challenge and

    makes for a valuable learningexperience.

SAE Baja Design Competition requiresparticipants to use real worldengineering practices to conquer thechallenges associated with designingand building an ATV (All Terrain

Vehicle). The planning andpreparations begin with designing andsimulation of the Vehicle, almost a yearin advance. The fabrication work isdone in the winter with rigorous testing

and modifications being done until the

Competition day. The Competition is a4-day event with 3 different categories

Static Events, Dynamic Events andthe popular Endurance Race.

This involves a detailedtechnical presentation about thedesign process covering allmajor technical systems of thecar, from the Transmission to

the Chassis. Additionally, safetyand technicalinspection is done to ensureconformity to prescribed rulesand standards. Points are

awarded based on the judgescomments and the inspectionresults.

The second day of the Event involvesjudging the off-roaders performance inrigorous field tests like acceleration,

suspension, traction , slopeclimbing, maneuverability etc. Points are

awarded on the basis of theperformance in these tests and thisalso decides the starting order for theEndurance Race.

The Endurance Race, which typically lasts

for 4 hours or 100 miles, is the highlight ofthe competition. A grueling track of 2-3miles with a wide variety of natural andman-made obstacles is specially created

for it. The Enduro is the best and theultimate test of an off-roader with only thebest teams being able to finish it, that tooonly after frequent repairs in the pitsduring the race.

Design competitions such as the SAE have tremendous educational value developing practical skills and competencies.

Interdisciplinary skillsTeams are composed of students from different years and disciplinepromoting person-to-person interaction, student recruiting, alumni relatioand community relations.

    Motivation and dedication

To compete in a competition of this scale, the team needs to be highmotivated throughout the project duration and they should believe in theproject with conviction.

Self directed and life-long learningThe team members develop considerable expertise in various areas which anot covered in existing courses. The students are self-driven in their quest fknowledge.

    Mentorship, apprenticeship and leadership

The team develops an informal system of mentorship and apprenticeship wisenior students mentoring junior students.

Practical experienceThis provides an excellent opportunity to develop practical, hands-on skand experience to complement formal education.

Self managed teamThe team is student initiated and managed thereby developing outstandinleadership and teamwork skills.

Engineering challengeThe engineering challenge of the competition is very high. This tests tengineering skills of the team at the highest level.

As opposed to Cricket, which is a sport fo

the 'masses', Motorsports is a sport for th'classes. The stupendous success of Th

Fastest Indian, Narain Karthikeyan and thrise of speedster Karun Chandok alon

with the arrival of Force India in the F

racing circuit, with the flamboyant Dr. VijaMallya at its helm, have drove Indias yout

    to Motorsports like never before.

The viewership of all forms of racing

increasing exponentially even as you rea

this line. Off-road racing and various ATracing championships, with gruelin

challenges like the Great Himalayan Ca

    Rally, that are attracting participation

ever increasing numbers, have beegaining traction among the petroholi

    crowd.

Moreover, the rise of numerous privarace-clubs, some of which have a specidivision for off-road racing, will ensure tha

    Motorsports will keep gaining ground

Association with our Team under th

developing scenario will earn you a statu

of a Patron of Motorsports allowing you treap rich dividends in future by way o

large scale visibility and brand recall in th

    growing racing circuit.
