WAKING UP FERGUSONThe fact of the matter is that people are very emotional about this. And with complete understanding. It actually goes deeper than just Michael Brown. It goes back to Eric Garner... it goes back to the cop beating the woman on the side of the road... it goes back to the cops busting the young girls door down and mistakenly shooting her as she was holding her baby in her arms... and countless other incidents. Hell... it even goes back to Rodney King. At this very moment, we do not know all the details that transpired in regards to that cop and Michael Brown. But what we do know is that situation is what has become the final straw that has triggered towards this current uprising going on in Ferguson... that was eventually bound to happen anyway.

And THAT’S what people are emotionally angry about!

Rich Juzwiak wants to buy a song by Elle Varner — but can’t.

Right now the single is only avail-able on SoundCloud until some future date when, presumably,

the full album will be released on iTunes, Amazon, etc.

Rich is pissed. He thinks Elle is be-having according to an antiquated “anticipation business model.” He believes…

Actually, Rich says it best, so here it is:

This new song exists only on Soundcloud. It is not available on iTunes. Why? Why can’t I have this song now? I want it now. I would buy it now. When it is offi-cially available, I will likely have already downloaded an illegal rip of it or ripped it myself or forgot-ten about it all together. What is this stupid anticipation business

model the music industry is still trying to make happen? Haven’t we proven that if we want something, we’ll take it regardless of the legality? Hasn’t that

collapsed the business of selling mu-sic? Will they ever learn?

A commenter then asked why, if the music is that important to him, Rich wouldn’t want to just remind himself to buy it later when it’s officially released.

Here’s his response:

These are fast times, man.

I will undoubtedly own this album in some ca-pacity, as I do Elle Var-ner’s debut. But maybe I’ll die before it comes out and not get to purchase it. Maybe I’ll go deaf. May-be my fingers will break

off. Maybe my brain will stop working. Maybe Elle Varner will say something that pisses me the fuck off. However, if this were available now, Elle Varner and her record label could have my money regardless of whatever befalls me.

That’s the point right there: if it were available NOW, the artist could have his money right NOW.

If you release a song online without full distribution behind it (meaning it’s avail-able on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Goo-gle Play, etc.), chances are good that you’re losing out on both download and streaming money.

Singles are great; they DO build an-ticipation for EP or full-length releases — but if you release a single, make damn sure it’s available for sale online! Otherwise, as Rich warns, your fans’ brains might stop working by the time they have the opportunity to pay you for your music..

How

To Suck At Social Media: Bad A

dvice For Bands

When it comes to building your music career, Social Media is a zero-sum game. Your fans should only like one band: your band. There’s simply not enough social media to go around. As an artist, you must either conquer so-cial media outright or leave nothing behind but scorched earth. Here’s how. Some important things to remember if you want to win at social media

1. It’s all about you — Duh. They’re your “followers,” after all. Treat them as such. Your fans’ only so-cial media medicine should be a daily in-jection of 100% maxi-mum YOU. And make it clear you’d prefer your monologue to run without interrup-tion.

2. Be a brand, not a band

— Don’t let your fans forget the reasons why they fol-lowed you in the first place: your corporate sponsor-ships, your clean website fonts, your newest line of t-shirts. Don’t draw at-tention to your art or your humanity,… that’s just weakness. Embody the brand and the brand will embody you, making you all-powerful. For extra im-pact, be sure to use terms like “direct-to-fan” and “val-ue-added” whenever you post on social media.

3. Don’t ever talk about politics, religion, or your personal life — Sure, these things might be important to you. They might even be central to your identity and to your music. But you risk offending people when you get real. So don’t get real. Don’t you dare. Stay polite at all costs, or even better: stay fake. Let’s pretend, though, that you DO get into a disagreement. Well the only correct course of action at that point is to crush them. Make an ex-

ample of them. Show no mercy.

4. Be everywhere — Deities can do it, so why shouldn’t you? Omnipresence is not only possible on social media, it’s required if you want to establish total domination. If you feel like you’re getting stretched too thin on social media and losing time for music, suck it

up already, will you? It’s your band’s future we’re talking about here. If you can just handle Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, MySpace, You-Tube, LinkedIn, G+, Flickr, Pinterest, and Vine, I’m sure one of your minions would be happy to help out with the rest of the platforms.

5. Sell, Sell, Sell — The more music you sell, the more money you make. The more money you make, the more music you can create. The more music you create, the more fans you’ll have; and you need to collect them all to win. That’s science, of course. So you might assume it’s also common sense. Unfortunately, no. It’s crucial that you remind your followers to hold up their part of the social media bargain and BUY something, some-thing else, then something else. They need to buy every-thing. All the time. If constant product announcements ar-en’t enough, guilt is usually a good motivator. Lay it on ‘em. If that doesn’t work, beg.

Sweet Cherie’s Not Letting Go

Yes it’s true that Cherie is not letting go. How do I know? Because she told me so... or rather, showed me so... with Today’s release of her brand new Single “Can’t Let Go”.

Spike Lee Handle The Hates He Receives During An On Camera InterviewDuring an interview regarding his Kick-starter Fundraising Campaign for his film “The Sweet Blood of Jesus”, Spike Lee skillfully corrects the female Bloomberg host (who tries to paint a negative pic-ture of how he should instead stop his crowdfunding campaign) by putting her into her place and schooling about the movie making business.
