To The Texas Music Educators Association:

We’re honored to have the Hubenak Elementary Choir selected to represent Lamar CISD at the 2015 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic and Convention.

Music and the arts are vital components of our students’ educational programs. The quality of our music programs is due to the talent and hard work of our students, the exemplary instruction pro-vided by our teachers and the support of parents and the entire community. We’re blessed to live in an area with residents who recognize and value the importance music and the arts play in the lives of our children.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees, our more than 28,400 students, our staff and the entire Lamar CISD community, I congratulate the students and teachers at Hubenak Elementary on this great honor, especially Angela Ramsey, Director of the Hubenak Choir.

We’re all very proud of their accomplishments.

Sincerely,

Thomas Randle, Ed. DSuperintendent

The Hubenak Elementary Choir has two perform-ing choirs with a total of 130 students. Students wishing to join the choir do not have to audition, but must maintain excellent behavior and passing grades, have a great attitude and love to sing!

Performing for you today is the fifth grade choir. The fifth grade choir rehearses two mornings a week before school and come to music together during the weekly specials rotation, allowing for sectionals when needed. The fifth grade choir performs about four times per year and travels around the com-munity singing at hospitals, nursing homes, other public venues. The choir takes an annual trip sing at the Blinn College music meet, where they have been consistently awarded all superior ratings and award-ed “Best in Class” many times. The students enjoy our yearly “singing Val-o-gram” fundraiser and our final trip to either Galveston or the Kemah Boardwalk where they get to sing and play!

Students at Hubenak are well prepared for their choir experience. They attend music once every six days and Mrs. Ramsey emphasizes vocal exploration and healthy, tuneful singing in every class, begin-ning in Kindergarten. Our little huskies are given performance opportunities through grade level pro-grams every other year as they grow and all students participate in the annual all-school Veteran’s Day performance.

In fourth grade, students may join the fourth grade choir. This choir focuses on the basics of choral sing-ing and meets during the school day through our specials rotation. The fourth grade choir performs two to three times per year, participates in the “sing-ing Val-o-gram” fundraiser as well as the end-of-year choir trip.

The combined choirs are quite a powerhouse of young musicians!

About the Choir

Hubenak Elementary is named in honor of a man who dedicated his life to Fort Bend County and the State of Texas. Joe Hubenak was a big proponent of giving back to his community. Former executive di-rector of the Rosenberg-Richmond Chamber of Com-merce Cliff Terrell said, “He believed community ser-vice was the greatest calling people could have. He thought people should do all they could to help their community reach its potential. I hope the students will learn from Joe’s example that through education, dedication and a desire to improve yourself, you can make yourself whatever you want to be.”We carry out the principles of our namesake through high academic standards, enrichment activities, academic clubs, and a commitment to

helping others through grade level service projects. We have been an Exemplary school and Met Stan-dard with Distinctions on the state accountability system since we opened our doors six years ago. Students participate in Art Club, Student Council, Run Girls, Science Olympiad, Safety Patrol, Student Coun-cil, Husky Broadcasting Club, Book Clubs, the Blue-bonnet Reading Competition, Rodeo Art, and Choir! Regardless of the activity, Hubenak students excel. Each grade level also participates in service projects that give back to the community. Serving others is an important part of learning at Hubenak and is a key element of our Mission Statement.

A native Houstonian, Angela Ramsey has been an elementary music teacher in the West Houston suburbs for fifteen years. After gradu-ating from the University of North Texas with a bachelor of music degree, Ms. Ramsey began her career in Katy ISD. There she directed her school choir, served on the curriculum committee for many years, lead a professional learning community and co-directed the Katy ISD honor choir in 2008.

Ms. Ramsey joined the Lamar CISD team in 2009 and opened Hubenak Elementary. Her choirs have consistently earned superior

ratings and several “best in class” designations at the Blinn College Music Meet. The Hubenak choir was selected to perform at the TMEA clinic and convention in 2012 as an elementary invited honor choir. She is proud to have the opportunity to bring them again this year. In Lamar CISD, Angela continues to actively serve on the district music curriculum team and as team leader on her campus. She has been a guest presenter at district, community and region workshops and will be presenting at TCDA this summer.

A busy mom of two girls (one of which is a proud Hubenak choir member) and a wife to Sean, Angela enjoys finding time to sing on her church worship team, serve in her community and tinker with a hobby (turned small business), decorated sugar cookies!

Angela Ramsey, Hubenak Choir Director

A graduate of Jacksonville University and the University of South Florida, Ms. Norwood studied choral music, voice, piano and organ. While in Florida, she taught elementary, middle and high school (4 years each), and was the accompanist for Calvary Baptist Church, in Clearwater, FL. Her high school show choir and ensembles consistently won the highest rating each year at contest.

Currently, she teaches at Huggins Elementary, in Fulshear TX, Lamar CISD, is accompanist for her church, and teaches privately. She enjoys living on her small farm with her wonderful son, Graham, two horses, two German Shepherds, several reptiles and assorted chickens and ducks.

MISSION STATEMENTTo educate all students by ensuring access to a superior education through inspired leadership among parents, teachers, administrators and staff, allowing students to achieve their full potential to participate in future social, economic and educational opportunities in their community.

DISTRICT INFORMATIONLocated 30 minutes from downtown Houston and about an hour from the Gulf of Mexico, Lamar CISD offers the best of all worlds: access to the bright lights and warm beaches, but grounded in tradition and the warmth of a small-town atmosphere.

Lamar CISD—now with more than 27,000 students and 38 campuses—is the fastest-growing school district in Fort Bend County.

In 2013, the District and all of its campuses achieved the highest ranking possible as part of the Texas Education Agency’s accountability system—Met Standard! Lamar CISD is the largest Houston area school district to meet the federal No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards. Plus, it added yet another National Blue Ribbon School—Velasquez Elementary—mark-ing the third National Blue Ribbon School in 10 years.

We offer progressive educational theory and practice, a state of the art technology plan, unparalleled community support and the advantages of small schools and a hometown atmosphere.
