    Creating 3DText

TitleMotion Pro lets you create three dimensional text. This section providesan overview of how 3D text works.

    To create 3D text:

1 Create a line of text.

2 Select 3D Text on the Size & Attributes tab.

3D Text StylesYou can also use a 3D text style from the Style Library.

To load a 3D text style:

1 Right-click on a style chip on the Styles tab.

2 Select Open Style Library.3 Select a 3D text style.

    4 Click on Load

TitleMotion Pro loads your selected 3D text style into the style chip andcloses the Style Library.

    3D Text andPerspective

TitleMotion Pro uses a center vanishing point to add depth to 3D text. Thecenter vanishing point determines how TitleMotion Pro extrudes eachcharacter. You cannot change the position of the vanishing point.

The following diagram shows you how a center vanishing point affects theway 3D text appears in different areas of the workspace.

    3D TextSettings

3D text styles include these features:

The face and bevel settings are the same for the

front and back of the character. The Flat, Concave, and Rounded selections

available from the drop-down list only affect theshape of the bevel.

The Transparency (Trans) setting applies to theentire character, including face, bevel and side.

You can set the Shine separately for face, bevel, and side.

You can shine a light on your 3D text to reveal colors applied to the face, bevel, or side. See 3D Text Lighting Effects on page 8 for details.

Remember that any settings on the Size & Attributes or Color & Texture tabsbecome part of the text style, and they change when you select a different

    text style.

Finding 3D Text SettingsYou can find the new 3D text settings on the Color & Texture tab. Click onthe Lights/Texture cycle button to alternate between these options.

    3D TextRestrictions

You can use most of the standard TitleMotion text settings with 3D text. However, some restrictions apply.

3D text does not have a shadow setting.

3D text does not support skew, twist, crop, or 3D effects in FX. However, you can still use these features with other objects in the title.

You must unrotate 3D text if you want to edit the text line. See EditingRotated 3D Text on page 5 for details.

3D text in rolls and crawls can produce undesirable results.

You cannot apply 3D effects to 3D text lines or characters.

    3D TextLighting

    Effects

3D text uses two types of lights to reveal colorand depth on the characters: ambient light anddirect light. The color and texture settings of 3Dtext are only visible if the characters are lit, or ifyou have a reasonable amount of ambient light.

You control both types of light with settings in theLights section of the Color & Texture tab.

    Ambient lighthas no point of

    origin, andstrikes every

    point on everyobject with

    equal intensity.

Ambient LightAmbient light has no point of origin, and strikes every point on every objectwith equal intensity. Use the ambient light setting to provide a wash of lighton your characters so that their color and texture is visible.

Direct LightDirect light highlights and enhances 3D text. In TitleMotion Pro, each textcharacter is surrounded by a triangle of three lights that can be rotated in theZ axis.

The 3D text styles shipped with TitleMotion Pro use direct lights as part oftheir design. You can adjust the intensity of each light as well as the positionof the lights on the Z axis.

The lights rotate in the Z axis as a unit. You cant change the position of thethree lights relative to each other, but you can change the position of thelights as a unit in relation to the 3D characters by changing the LightRotation value.

To determine where each light originates:

1 Set all of the light intensities to zero, including ambient light.

Your text characters should appear black.

2 Increase the intensity of just one light, so you can see how that light hitsthe characters and what kinds of highlights and shadows it produces.

    Animating 3DText Lights inFX

You can adjust the lighting on 3D characters over time by rotating the lightsin the Z axis.

FX light rotation depends on the CG rotation setting. You can find the CGrotation setting in the Lights section on the Color & Texture tab. FX uses thisvalue as its starting point.

To animate 3D text style lights:

    1 Create a title using 3D text.

    2 Switch to FX.

3 Insert a second keyframe for your 3D text line.

4 Switch to the Pro tab.

5 Change the Rotation value under the Lights section of the tab.

FX smoothly animates the lighting on your 3D text between keyframes.

9 Adjust any of the texture settings to customize the look of your text. SeeAnimated Texture Settings on page 10 for details.

    AnimatedTextures andTitle Types

TitleMotion Pro automatically changes any still titles to animations so thatthe title renders properly. If you change your title type back to still, youranimated texture does not render. Roll and crawl title types do not have to bechanged to ensure that the animated texture renders properly.

    AnimatedTextureSettings

You can adjust the size and alignment of any texture applied to text inTitleMotion Pro.

Scale SettingThe Scale setting makes the texture larger or smaller, and determines thenumber of times the texture is repeated over the surface of the character.Positive numbers make the texture bigger, and negative numbers make thetexture smaller. The smaller the texture, the more times it repeats to coverthe text characters.

    AnimationEffects

3D Effect OptionsYou can adjust several options on the 3D Effects tab.

Start inserts the effect at the beginning of your animation path. Over applies the effect across the selected animation path, with some

restrictions. If your path has more keyframes than the effect uses, the extrakeyframes repeat the last keyframe of the effect. If your path has fewerkeyframes than the effect uses, TitleMotion Pro adds the extra keyframeson top of the last keyframe in the path.

End inserts the effect at the end of your animation path.

Apply All adds the effect to all animation paths.

Stagger relates to the Apply All option. It adds a specific number offrames to the beginning of each effect, so that they follow a linear timesequence. For example, if you set the stagger to 5, TitleMotion Pro adds await time of 5 frames to the first animation path, 10 frames to the second

animation path, 15 frames to the third animation path, and so on. Animate adds motion to the thumbnails on the 3D Effects tab, so that you

can see how the effect behaves.

Reverse flips the flow of the effect, but doesnt change the placement ofthe effect. Your animation can fly in instead of fly off, or explode in insteadof explode off.

If you remove aneffect from an

    animation path,any changes you

made to theeffect keyframesare also erased.

If you moved orrepositioned theeffect keyframes,

you may findthat your pathchanges shape

    or position whenyou remove an

    effect.

Remove Effect deletes all of the keyframes related to an effect from theselected animation path. Any changes that you have made to the effectkeyframes are also erased.

Changing or Removing 3D EffectsYou can only have one 3D effect on each animation path.

To change a 3D effect on an animation path, select the animation path andthen select a new 3D effect. TitleMotion Pro replaces the old 3D effect withthe new 3D effect.

To remove a 3D effect from an animation path, select the animation path andclick on the Remove Effect button on the 3D Effects tab.

If you change or remove a 3D effect from an animation path, any changes youmade to the 3D effect keyframes are also removed. If you repositioned any3D effect keyframes, you may find that your path changes shape or positionwhen you remove an effect.

    AnimatedKerning

TitleMotion Pro lets you adjust the character kerning in a text line over time. You need to create two (or more) keyframes to set the start and end kerningvalues of the animation. FX creates a smooth animated kerning effect thatmoves from one keyframe to the next.

    Kerning refers tothe amount of

    space betweencharacters in a

    text line.

    Increasing thekerning amount

    increases thespace betweencharacters, and

    decreasing itdecreases the

    space betweencharacters.

Because kerning refers to the space between characters, you cannot applyanimated kerning to individual characters in FX. You need to select ExportText as Lines on the Animation Settings tab in CG if you want to useanimated kerning in FX.

Kerning SettingsYou can adjust two kerning settings on the Pro tab in FX: Amount and From.

The Amount field sets the size of the space between characters.

The From field marks the point in your text line that doesnt move. Thekerning expands from this point.

A From value of -1 expands the charactersfrom the left edge of the text line.

A From value of 0 expands the charactersfrom the center of the text line.

A From value of 1 expands the charactersfrom the right edge of the text line.

You can use any value between -1 and 1 in the From field, and you can alsomove your keyframes around the workspace as usual. Try using differentvalues and observe what happens to your text lines as you change theAmount and From values.

Sheen The new Sheen settings on the FX Pro tab let you change the angle of thesheen on a character over time. Most text styles support sheen, exceptClassic Inscriber and 3D text styles.

Add sheen to your text in CG before you animate the sheen in FX.

    A sheensimulates light

    reflecting off ofthe surface

    material of acharacter.

    To animate a sheen:

1 Add and position your text line keyframes in FX.

You need at least two keyframes to animate a sheen. The first keyframe isthe starting position and the second keyframe is the final position of thesheen.

If you want to animate the sheen and not move your text, leave thekeyframes on top of each other.

    2 Select the first keyframe.

3 Select a sheen angle on the Pro tab.4 Select the second keyframe.

5 Select a sheen angle on the Pro tab.

The sheen on your text moves from the first angle to the second angleover the course of the animation.

You can animate the sheen between any keyframes, as long as your text stylesupports sheen.

Sheen Angle SettingsThe sheen angle that you set in CG becomes the starting sheen angle in FX.FX uses your CG sheen angle as its zero value.

For example, if you set your sheen angle to 37 in CG, and then select 20 asyour sheen angle in FX, FX rotates the sheen 20 degrees so that it ends up ata final angle of 57.

they automatically adjust for variable text lines

With a smart template, you can select a template and change the text withoutadjusting the animation paths attached to any element of the template.

Smart templates automatically account for characters added or removed froma text line, even if the original title animated each character separately. Youcan enter text lines of varying lengths, such as names or headings, withoutmodifying the animation paths.

    Using SmartTemplates

TitleMotion Pro ships with a number of smart templates that you can useimmediately.

    To use a smart template:

1 Select a smart template from the template list.

You can identify smart templates by the animated at the end of theirnames.

2 Change the default text line.

    3 Output the animated title.

You can switch to FX to adjust the animation, but you dont have to.

    Creating SmartTemplates

    To create a smart template:

1 Create your title in CG.2 Switch to FX and animate your template, using default text for any text

    lines.

3 Switch back to CG and save your title as a template using the TemplateManager.

See Creating Templates from Titles on page 21 for details.

4 Use your smart template in exactly the same way as you would use astandard CG template.
