AID System Assessment: Where We Are in 2021

Irl B. Hirsch, MD, is professor and Diabetes Treatment and Teaching Chair at the University of Washington Medicine Diabetes Institute in Seattle.

Dr Hirsch received his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1984. He completed residency training in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami and Miami Beach, Florida. Dr Hirsch also was fellowship-trained in endocrinology and metabolism at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Dr Hirsch has dedicated his career to patient care, clinical research and teaching. His focus in these areas is the treatment and management of diabetes. He has an interest in new technologies for the treatment of diabetes, particularly those involved in the use of insulin therapy. This interest centers on the mechanisms of how insulin co-modulates inflammation with glucose and how this results in improved outcomes for patients.

He has been involved in numerous major clinical research trials, including the DCCT, ACCORD, STAR-1, JDRF Sensor Trial, SEARCH, ORIGIN, ADAG, FLAT-SUGAR, and many more involved with insulin therapy.

Additionally, he has an interest in the use of computers in diabetes data management, and how pattern recognition can be used to improve diabetes control and how glycemic variability noted on glucose meter downloads may be an independent risk for microvascular complications.

Dr Hirsch has authored more than 200 research papers, including a review of insulin in the New England Journal of Medicine. He also has written more than 60 editorials, three commentaries for The Journal of the

American Medical Association, numerous book chapters and four books for patients and physicians. He is also a much in demand national and international speaker.

He is the past editor-in-chief of DOC News and Clinical Diabetes and former chair of the Professional Practice Committee for the American Diabetes Association and served as a member of the Endocrine Section of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Currently, he is section editor for Up-To-Date.

Dr Hirsch has been honored at every level of his career, including being recognized with the Outstanding Young Physician Award by the University of Missouri Alumni Association in 2001, and in 2003 being honored as the American Diabetes Association’s Physician- Clinician of the Year. In 2005, he received the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists’ Distinguished Endocrinologist Award, and in 2013, he received the American Diabetes Association’s Josiah K. Lilly Sr. Distinguished Service Award. In April 2015 he was elected to a Mastership by the American College of Physicians.

Jennifer Sherr, MD, PhDCase Studies

Associate Professor in PediatricsYale School of MedicineNew Haven, Connecticut

Jennifer Sherr MD, PhD’s passion for the care of those with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is quite personal, as she was diagnosed in 1987. From the time of her diagnosis, she was determined to become a pediatric endocrinologist. She completed her undergraduate and medical school training through an accelerated Joint BA/MD program at Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She then completed both her pediatric residency and pediatric endocrinology fellowship at Yale. While she always wanted to care for those with T1D, her eyes were open to the meaningful impact that clinical research has. She thus embarked on further training through the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Investigative Medicine Program, a PhD program designed to develop the next generation of physician scientists.

Dr Sherr has been devoted to clinical research over the past 13 years’ time. Her thesis examined the mechanisms responsible for the loss of the glucagon response to hypoglycemia and its relationship to residual beta-cell function. Dr Sherr has since focused her career on both clinical therapeutics and technologic advancements including new glucagon formulations, adjunctive therapies for those with T1D, and new technologies including continuous glucose monitors and automated insulin delivery systems. She served as the first Junior Pediatric Faculty Member for the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange (T1DX). As an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, her goal in both the clinical and research realm is to reduce the burden of living with T1D, for both her patients and herself.

Grazia Aleppo, MD, FACE, FACPProfessor of MedicineDirector, Diabetes Education ProgramAssociate Chief for Clinical AffairsDivision of EndocrinologyMetabolism and Molecular MedicineFeinberg School of Medicine Northwestern UniversityChicago, Illinois

She is also the Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs in the same Division and the Medical Director of the Northwestern Medicine Diabetes Training and Education Program.

Dr Aleppo’s clinical interest and research interest is in Diabetes, particularly in the implementation of Diabetes Technology such as Insulin pump therapy and Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) therapy in clinical practice. She has participated in the major clinical trials on the use of CGM in various populations and was the protocol chair for the Replace-BG clinical trial which lead to the approval of CGM therapy for Medicare beneficiaries in the USA.

She has been very active in scholarly activities with over 50 publications and book chapters in peer reviewed journals.

She is the present Chair of the Endocrine Society Clinical Affair Core Committee.
