When you’re building in the shadow of a major city’s busiest and most cherished landmark, you have to get it spot on.

It is no exaggeration to say that St James’ Park is a sacred site for the people of Newcastle.

Newcastle United football ground has been an integral part of the city’s history and culture since the 19th century. Newcastle United’s fans are known to be some of the most loyal and passionate in the world. Holding the traditions of their spiritual home very dear as the furore surrounding plans to change the stadium’s name a few years ago proved.

This passion led to Taylor Maxwell researching and guiding the use of Reynobond composite cladding in conjunction with the genius framing system, which also supported the mesh cladding. Borne partly out of the desire to respect the heritage of St James’ Park and to create a new building which enhances the area.

The 11-storey, 216-bedroom student accommodation located across the road from the arena on Pitt Street was completed in August 2014.

The wide range of colours available from Reynobond, reassured the partners behind the development that they would be able to find exactly the finish they were looking for.

Andy Barker, senior contract manager for Simco EFS, the sub-contractors who installed the cladding at St James’ Point explained: “The

colour scheme blends in perfectly with the contrast around the build, it fits with the background of the football club and the other buildings in the area.”

Ryan Prince of Day Architectural agreed that the colours available from Reynobond provided the perfect fit:

“After researching various products, we received the Reynobond samples from TM and we went for a champagne and a bronze metallic panel. It was the colour scheme we were looking for and ticked all the boxes.“When people pass by now they comment on the cladding and the colour, it’s a very clean and square finish.”Cost was another crucial factor for Day Architectural. Ryan explained: “The options in terms of colour and finish are great, but ultimately it also comes down to budget as well, and we were more than happy with the price.”“As well as competitive unit prices, getting the right materials delivered at the right time helped to keep costs down”.Andy Barker of Simco EFS said the service provided by TM was second-to-none:“To be honest, they were fantastic, every order was delivered on time - and usually early morning to avoid traffic in the city centre”.“I asked them to separate the material in pallets for the different elevations and they were able to

accommodate every time, it couldn’t have gone better from that point of view.” “They had to fabricate the Reynobond composite cladding to size and cut the panels into a tray/cassette system. The tolerances they worked to were tight, and all delivered to the millimetre”.

And he had warm praise for how easy the Reynobond and mesh were to install with Taylor Maxwell’s genius framing system behind both:

“The genius framing is a brilliant system. You can make adjustments easily if the building tolerances are slightly out, which they were on a couple of floors”.

“Once you’ve set up the frame, it’s a modular system all the way up, you just have to measure the gaps and slot the panels in - you literally can’t go wrong.”

Andy, who has spent his working life installing rainscreen cladding systems up and down the country, rates Reynobond composite cladding as one of the top products in the marketplace, due to its light weight and availability.

Day Architectural along with lead developer Shepherd Construction and Simco EFS were so pleased with the results at St James’ Point that they intend to use the same TM cladding on the second phase of development, a mix of five and seven-storey accommodation buildings providing more than 200 bedrooms for Newcastle’s students, due for completion in August 2015.
