Publication Profile

The Linfield Review is a weekly newspaper produced by students at Linfield College. Since 1896, the Review has reported college and community news, featured student-authored opinions and covered college athletics as well as offered in-depth feature stories. The paper has been a member of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association Collegiate Division for eight years. The adviser for the Review is Professor Will Lingle of Linfield’s Department of Mass Communication.

The Review is published every Friday during the school year, with the exception of school breaks and the month of January. Special editions are published, as well, such as the Back-to-School Issue, the Commencement Issue and the Renter’s Guide. In addition to the 1,000 copies printed for community distribution, almost 100 subscribers also receive weekly issues. These subscribers include parents of Linfield students, college alumni and other colleges in the Northwest. Funding for the Review is generated through advertising revenues and the Associated Students of Linfield College.

The staff of the Review comprises 17 full-time students whose jobs range from copy editor and page designer to ad salesperson and photographer. Each semester, a new set of Linfield students sign up to report for the Review. Participation in the publication is open to students from any department and any year.

The ultimate goals of the Review are to act as a practical learning tool for Linfield students interested in any aspect of newspaper publication or media studies and to produce a high-quality publication representative of the college. The experienced staff members strive for professionalism and consistency in every issue. Last spring, the Review received 11 awards at the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association Collegiate Newspaper contest, the second-most in our circulation group. Among these awards were first place in Best Website, Feature Story and Special Section, confirming the Review as one of the best college newspapers in Oregon. This recognition encourages us at the Review to maintain high standards and push for excellence.

Linfield Review Readers: Your Captive Audience

The Linfield Review has a wide-ranging audience – it is not just read by students. Every week, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, trustees, Wildcat sports fans, visitors to McMinnville and patrons of local businesses peruse the pages. All of these people could also be reading your advertisement. There are 290 faculty and staff members at Linfield, most of who live in Yamhill County. Regular visitors to campus include parents, alumni and prospective students, as well as the hundreds of people who come each year to watch Wildcat sports games. These people are often unaware of what McMinnville has to offer but look for lodging, shopping and dining while they are here. There are 1,750 students at Linfield’s McMinnville campus. Linfield students represent 26 states and 20 countries. Currently, the majority of students come from the western U.S., including Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. International students comprise 4 percent of our student body. Approximately 46 percent of the students are male, 54 percent are female. Advertising Specifications Advertisement Sizes Sizes are expressed as the number of columns wide by the number of inches tall. For example, a 2c x 4” advertisement is 2 columns wide by 4 inches tall. Multiplying columns by inches gives the total number of column inches. (2x4 = 8 total column inches). Multiplying total column inches by the ad rate equals the total cost of the advertisement. The Review measures six columns wide by 16 inches tall. Digital Advertisements Advertisements in digital format are preferred. The Review can receive advertisements as a PDF, PSD, TIF or JPEG file via email. The advertisements can be sent as an attachment to the business manager at [email protected]. Positions Guarantees The Review makes every effort to honor positions requested, but cannot guarantee positions. Advertisements will not normally be places on pages 1, 2, 3 and the features pages. Special Services Creative Services Before scheduling advertisements, advertisers can work with the Review’s advertising designer to create an ad spec. There are no production charges for advertisements that run in the Review. However, the Review reserves the right to charge for or refuse any extraordinary production procedures. Tearsheets Upon request, we will send tearsheets along with the invoice. A maximum of three tearsheets will be provided free of charge. Advertising Deadlines Reservations and Material All advertising material is due to the business manager by 5 p.m. Tuesday before publication (Friday).

Terms of Payment Financial Obligations The Review will send an invoice for advertisements run on a monthly basis. Any balances older than 30 days are subject to a 2-percent-per-month interest charge. Policies Refunds or Credits To be considered for account credits, claims based on real damages much be made to the business manager within seven days after the bill for the publication is received. Refunds or credits shall not exceed the total cost of the advertisement in error. Minor typographical errors do not constitute a basis for refunds or credits. Late Reservations Reservations or materials received after the Tuesday deadline are subject to a $15 late fee. Advertising Not Accepted The Review strives to publish material that will serve the Linfield community as a whole. The Review reserves the right to reject any advertising that may be offensive or in poor taste; states or implies discrimination; is fraudulent, deceptive, obscene; or causes incitement to violate national, state or local laws or college regulations. Advertising as Editorial Content Advertising resembling editorial material must contain the word “Advertisement” at the top of the ad. The Review reserves the right to reject any such advertisements. Cancellations The Review reserved the right to charge $6 per column inch for any advertisement canceled after the Wednesday deadline or early contract termination. The business manager is willing to work in order to change contracts throughout the year.

Additional Information:

A. The Linfield Review (TLR) reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising. Prepayment does not guarantee publication.

B. Advertisers shall notify TLR of any error in time for correction within a timely manner of the first publication or the invoice being received. TLR’s liability for error shall not exceed that portion of the entire cost of such advertisement as the space occupied by the error.

C. Except as provided above, TLR shall be under no liability for loss to the advertiser as a result of the publisher’s error or omission in advertising copy, failure to publish or to distribute all or any portion of an issue for which an advertisement has been accepted.

D. The advertiser assumes full liability for their advertisements and agrees to hold TLR harmless for the content of advertisements authorized for publication and any claims that arise there from that may be made against TLR.

E. TLR will not be bound by any verbal agreements, promises, waivers, understandings or conditions that are not contained in this advertising information or in a contract.

F. Advertisers, by having an advertisement in TLR, are purchasing space and circulation only. All property rights, including any copyright interest, to any advertisement produced for the advertiser by TLR, using artwork and typography furnished or arranged for by TLR, shall be property of TLR. No such advertisement or any part thereof may be reproduced or assigned without prior written consent of TLR.

G. Neither party to this agreement shall be held liable for failure to perform as the result of fire, flood, strike, accidents, acts of nature or other reasons beyond their control. Under such circumstances, either party shall have the right to terminate this agreement without penalty. However, nothing in this paragraph shall excuse the advertiser from its obligation to pay for advertising published by TLR.
