and has stood the test of scalin an internet#or" to a lobal utility the si4e of
todayBs Internet

be done usin an upper layer protocol identi&er such as a *rans!ission
Control Protocol (*CP) or ser 8atara! Protocol (8P) port *his
additional processin of the pac"et by inter!ediate routers !a"es

$obiity Mobility is a ne# re=uire!ent for Internetconnected devices% in
#hich a node can chane its address as it chanes its physical attach!ent
to the Internet and still !aintain e'istin connections 7lthouh there is a
speci&cation for IPv$ !obility% due to a lac" of infrastructure%
co!!unications #ith an IPv$ !obile node are ineEcient

the proble!s of IPv$ and be e'tensible to solve additional proble!s in the
future *his replace!ent protocol is IPv6
IPv6 solves the proble!s of IPv$ in the follo#in #ays:
%uge address space IPv6 addresses are 12/ bits lon% creatin an
address space #ith ;$ H 10;/possible addresses *his is plenty of address
space for the foreseeable future and allo#s all !anner of devices to
connect to the Internet #ithout the use of 7*s 7ddress space can also be
allocated internationally in a !ore e=uitable !anner
%ierarchica routing infrastructure IPv6 addresses that are reachable
on the IPv6 portion of the Internet% "no#n as lobal addresses% aredesined to have a structure that &ts the typical lobalreionallocal
hierarchy of Internet service providers (I.Ps) that typically e'ist bet#een
an orani4ation or ho!e and the bac"bone of the Internet lobal
addresses are desined to be su!!ari4able and hierarchical% resultin in
fe#er routin entries in the routin tables of Internet bac"bone routers
Automatic con!guration IPv6 hosts can auto!atically con&ure their
o#n IPv6 addresses and other con&uration para!eters% even in the
