COUNSELLOR/COUNSELLOR IN TRAINING APPLICATION

Each cabin requires a counsellor and a counsellor-in-training (CIT).

You must be in Grade 8 or higher to be considered for the position of Counsellor in Training (CIT). Responsibilities:

o Attend a training and information session in Haliburton before the TLAC week; o Assist with direction of your cabin campers with the Counsellor during group activites (Emergency

Drills, Cabin Challenge, Pinetages presentations, Meals, Lights-out, etc.); o Be a positive role model during camp; o Make a positive connection with your cabin campers; o Demonstrate leadership qualities throughout all Program and Camp activites.

You must have previously been a CIT or Counsellor to be considered for the position of Counsellor. Responsibilities:

o All of the above duties as listed for a CIT, and: Contact all campers that you are responsible for before the TLAC week; Direct your campers during group activites (Emergency Drills, Cabin Challenge,

Pinetages presentations, Meals, Lights-out, etc.); Complete a TLAC journal.

Tell us who you are, and why you are the “perfect person” to be a Counsellor or CIT. Don’t forget to mention qualities you have, that will establish how you will be an excellent role model and leader at TLAC.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS Visual Arts Theatre Arts

Clay Sr. (2 periods): Students will be exploring different hand building techniques using kiln-fired clay to create vessels and unique sculptures. Please bring an apron, sketchbook, pencil and plastic bag. Drawing Sr. (1 period): Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials as they create a piece of art using inspiration from the natural world. Please bring a sketchbook and pencils. Glass Jewelry Sr. (1 period): Students will develop basic glass cutting skills, investigate colour theory and learn about the properties of working with glass for fusing purposes. They will cut, layer and assemble pieces which will then be kiln-fired to be made into a necklace or bracelet. Filmmaking Sr. (2 periods): In this course, students will explore the different skills needed to create a short film, including scriptwriting, filming, editing and sound work. Painting Sr. (2 periods):. Explore a variety of mediums and techniques as you expand your understanding of acrylics and how they can be used to create innovative works of art. Plaster Sr. (1 period): Explore a variety of techniques including casting to create life-like sculptures using the same procedures as used in the special effects industry. Torn Paper Sr. (1 period): In this course, students will create a 9x12 torn paper picture working with Japanese papers. They will learn how to use patterns and textures to create shading and details in their work. The final product is chosen by the individual student and could include a landscape, portrait or still life. Please bring a few photographs or magazine clippings for ideas.

Acting (2 periods): Open to students in grades 7-12 with an interest in acting. Use advanced acting techniques to explore voice and physical form to enhance skills and collaborate to create an original performance. Some drama experience necessary. Character Work (1 period): Open to students in grades 7-12 with an interest in acting. Develop your ability to step into the shoes of another. Practice creating new characters by imagining their background, writing and improvising in role. Dance Sr. (2 periods): Open to students in grades 9-12 who enjoy dancing. Improve your dance technique and work on your performance skills while learning choreography. There will be a final performance to showcase your skills at the end of the week. Some dance experience necessary. Dance Variety (1 period): Open to students in grades 7-12 interested in studying multiple dance styles. Spend time learning jazz, highland, dance improvisation techniques, hip hop, ballet, line dancing, etc! Lots of fun for those who like to move in all different ways and possibly try something new. Hip Hop (1 period): Open to students in grades 7-12. Whether you’re looking to expand your dance experience or learn some cool party moves, you’ve come to the right place. During this class you will learn movements, combinations, and have a chance to explore the art of freestyling. Improvisation Sr. (1 period): Open to students in grades 9-12 with an interest in acting. Build self confidence and performance skills through improvisational activities intended to stimulate creativity in an inclusive environment. Line Dancing Sr. (1 period): Open to students in grades 9-12 who are interested in having a blast! Smile and laugh each day while learning all different types of line dancing. Be prepared to listen to all different types of music along with the opportunity to suggest songs. No dance experience necessary!! Musical Theatre (3 periods): Open major for students in grades 7-12 with some stage experience. A willingness to sing and dance is necessary. This year’s musical production is “Beauty and the Beast”. Spoken Word (1 period): Open to students in grades 7-12 who have an interest in sharing their voice creatively. Explore the art of reciting personally created pieces while working on voice intonation and inflection.

Health and Fitness (1 period) All Sessions are Open to Both Junior and Senior Applicants

During your week at the arts camp, you may choose up to a maximum of two (2) Health and Fitness courses.

Indoor Recreation: For students wanting to participate in a variety of high activity fun based movement activities that are done indoors. The idea is to rotate activities (Zumba, Line Dancing, Yoga, HIIT activities, etc.) throughout a great week of having fun with your friends while enjoying an active lifestyle. Outdoor Recreation: For students wanting to participate in group activities (no sports). The focus is on getting heart rates high and smiles beaming during cooperative games and other fun, inclusive activities (field games, ultimate frisbee, capture the flag, man-tracker, MOGA, etc.). Sports Medley: For students wanting to play a variety of sports. The focus is on burning lots of energy while rotating through a variety of sports (basketball, ball hockey, soccer, baseball, etc.) throughout the week in a fun and inclusive manner. Survival: Enjoy hiking in the woods and trails at camp, learning how to take bearings on a map with a compass, use a GPS to set your location and find treasures. Build different types of emergency shelters, learn different methods of starting fires and have a fun team competition on the last day. Waterfront: For students who enjoy participating in water activities. The waterfront program will include: kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, etc. Students will have to pass a swimming test at Camp White Pine, and wear a PFD at all times. Other Sports Offered: Tennis, Ropes, Mountain Biking

Music – All Sessions are Open to Both Junior and Senior Applicants Concert Band Exploring (1 period): Have you ever wanted to learn a band instrument or maybe a second band instrument? No experience or opportunity? Well have we got a course for you!!! In this course you will learn the basics/fundamentals of playing any of the traditional band instruments (woodwind, brass, percussion). No experience necessary! Concert Band Growing (2 periods): Play some amazing tunes with some awesome people; from movie tunes, to traditional band pieces, to rock melodies, something for everyone! Grouped according to the best educational fit. Open to students who play flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, bass guitar (must be able to read staff notation - not TAB), bells, and percussion. Minimum 2 year playing experience. Concert Band Enriching (2 periods): An enrichment opportunity for instrumental students to challenge themselves. Using traditional and contemporary band music, working with a guest conductor from U of T, students who play flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, bass guitar (must be able to read staff notation - not TAB), bells, and percussion will benefit from this experience. Minimum 3 years playing experience is recommended. Guitar Exploring (1 period): This course is for students with little or no experience on guitar. Learn the basics of guitar, a number of common chords and strum out a few tunes. Students must provide their own acoustic guitar. No experience necessary. Guitar Growing (2 periods): Expand your guitar skills! Learn some new tunes and work within small ensembles to better your performance. This course is for students with a minimum of 1 year experience on guitar and the ability to read staff notation. Students must provide their own acoustic guitar. Guitar Enriching (1 period): Love playing guitar or bass guitar and want to take your performance to the next level? Solo, small group, and ensemble settings. The course is for advanced players who have three or more years of experience on guitar. Students must be able to read staff notation, TAB notation, and chord notation. Students must provide their own acoustic guitar or bass. Jazz Band - Growing (1 period): Been there, done that in the instrumental world? Have you played your band instrument for 2 years or more? Time to “step it up” a notch with new learning on traditional notation and instruments? Jazz Band is a fun filled, action packed course that helps you expand your musical learning to other genres. It’s a party band...if you play Jazz well, people can’t help themselves, they HAVE to dance! Musical Futures Rock Band (1 period): Want to find your inner rock star? Tap into the world of rock band techniques with other musicians as you select music charts, collaborate with peers and participate in improvised jam sessions leading to performance. Calling all drummers, keyboard players, guitarists, bassists and singers. 1-2 years experience recommended. Exploring Percussion (1 period): An opportunity to explore the world of percussion instruments and styles. Drum lines, drum circles, keyboard percussion, explore it all! No experience necessary . Pop Ensemble (3 periods): Learn to perform pop and contemporary music! Students will learn a number of tunes from a wide variety of modern artists... from The Strumbellas, to Stevie Wonder, to Michael Jackson, to Ed Sheeran... you will experience a wide variety of music styles. This is for students with considerable experience who can easily sight read sheet music and is comfortable in a solo performance setting. Open to students who are strong singers, or who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drum set. Exploring Vocal Music (1 period): A “Fun”-damentals course for building the basics of vocal music which is sure to build self confidence when solo singing and build peer relationships during ensemble performances. No experience necessary. Vocals: Growing as a Singer - Growing (1 period): Seeking all songbirds! Find your voice as you grow in vocal techniques to build your skill and enhance performances. Increase your level of confidence for solo performances and discover where your voice fits in an ensemble setting. 2 years singing experience recommended. Singer/Songwriter - Growing (1 period): Do you have dreams of being a campfire-playing, coffee house-performing singer/songwriter guru? This is the course for you! Learn some standard tunes and work together on creating new songs you can share. At least 2 years experience is recommended. Students must provide their own instrument. STOMP - Growing (1 period): Get your groove on! Using a variety of percussion instruments, including your body, create musical works using rhythm. This course is recommended for students with at least 1 year of percussion experience. TLAcapellas - Enriching (2 periods): Acapella mashups of pop music interwoven with funky choreography for the ultimate Pitch Perfect Experience! This is for students with vocal experience looking to develop harmonies in a team atmosphere. Minimum 3 years singing experience recommended. Ukulele Exploring (1 period): Have you always wanted to learn to play ukulele? This course is for students with little or no experience on ukulele. We will learn the basics, a number of common chords and strum out a few tunes. Students must provide their own ukulele. No experience necessary. Get Your Uke On - Growing (1 period): “Greetings Master Uke, grow in your ukulele you must”. Discover another world of playing as you develop your ukulele skills. Limitless music possibilities with the galaxy’s most portable instrument. Minimum 1 year playing experience.

STUDENT PROGRAM SELECTION The arts camp is set up as a typical high school day with four periods per day. A free-time period follows period four when students study, swim, read, play games, etc. Three nutritious meals are included each day as well as a light snack before bed. There is a nightly evening concert in the Pinetages Theatre featuring fantastic performances from major artists. Following the theatre presentation, a supervised study hall is provided every evening from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.

First, second and third choices must be different so that a suitable schedule can be made for you should some sessions be cancelled due to low enrollment.

TLDSB CODE OF CONDUCT

The TLAC Team aims to provide a memorable, enriching experience in the Arts. Camper COURTESY, COOPERATION and RESPECT are essential in helping maintain an enjoyable, safe, and productive learning environment. Following the TLDSB Code of Conduct will ensure a memorable experience for each student in attendance. Specifically, at TLAC: 1. Any camper who takes or damages another person’s belongings may be sent home for the remainder of the camp. 2. Campers are not allowed to smoke or possess any alcoholic beverages. This includes paraphenalia and “resources”, such as

matches and lighters. The Camp Principal has the right to send campers home for a violation of this rule. 3. Any intentional damages to Camp White Pine property will be dealt with firmly. An act is considered intentional if the activity

causing damage is foolish, unnecessary and/or warned against by staff or counsellors. 4. No weapons of any kind will be permitted at TLAC. 5. No telephone will be available for campers' use. For emergency purposes, a telephone is available with the permission of one

of the Camp Directors. 6. Cell phones are not to interfere with the camp experience. Cell phones may only be used in your cabin during free time. Cell

phones seen outside of cabins will be collected and returned at the end of camp. Cell phones that are viewed as interfering with the camp experience will also be collected.

7. There will be no refunds given for campers who are sent home. Parents and/or guardians will be responsible for the transportation of any camper sent home due to a violation of the Code of Conduct.

When you are at TLAC, you are at school. It will not feel like it, but it must always be remembered that you are in an educational setting. If you would not do it at school, you may not do it at TLAC.

If you choose to participate in TLAC activities, you must understand that you bear the responsibility for any injury that might occur. Trillium Lakelands District School Board does not provide accident insurance coverage for student injuries that occur on school premises or during school activities. The board makes available an Accident and Life insurance program through Reliable Life Insurance Company. Participation is voluntary and costs are to be paid by the parent or guardian. Payment can be made to Trillium Lakelands DSB in the form or cheque/money order/ bank draft or cash.

Payment must be received within 5 business days or your registration will be moved to the bottom of the list until the date that it is received.

Post-dated cheques for full payment are accepted only at the time of registration (within 5 business days for online registrations). The last date that can be post-dated is March 29, 2018.

If you require financial assistance to enable your child to attend TLAC, please contact Sandra Corry at 1-888-526-5552 x21257 or by email at [email protected]. Only students who have not attended TLAC before may be considered. The deadline to apply for financial assistance is January 19, 2018.

If students need to withdraw from camp, a refund will be provided less an administration fee of $50.00 to cover fees that we cannot recuperate.

I understand that in permitting my student to participate in Trillium Lakelands Arts Camp, I am assuming the risks associated with my student’s participation in this activity. Conduct and accept the consequences if the Code of Conduct is not followed; I give/do not give consent for my child’s image to be used in Board publications and websites, in print or

electronic media. I have a clear understanding of the Elements of Risk involved and accept the responsility of any injury that

might occur. I confirm that the medical information provided is current, accurate, and complete; If accepted for enrolment at Trillium Lakelands Art Camp 2018, we agree to abide by all camp regulations and

Thank you for registering for Trillium Lakelands Arts Camp 2018. Please keep this information page for your records.

TLAC will be held once again at Camp White Pine in Haliburton, Sunday, May 20 to Friday, May 25, 2018. All students will be picked up on the morning of Sunday, May 20th at their local area high school. Parents are invited to a performance evening on Friday, May 25th where they can view performances and arts displays and pick up their child.

TRANSPORTATION TO CAMP Transportation to camp will be provided by TLDSB via bus from your local high school. Students will be notified of the pickup time in their Information Package sent in April.

CABINS Cabins contain beds with only mattresses provided. Campers must supply their own sleeping gear.

CAMP DAILY SCHEDULE

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES The recreation facilities are available for use at specified times each day. The swimming area is only open when lifeguards are on duty.

PARENT/GUARDIAN NIGHT – Friday May 25, 2018 Parents/guardians are responsible to pick up their child at Camp White Pine on Friday, May 25, 2018. TLDSB does not provide transportation home.

WHAT’S NEXT? The TLAC committee will review registrations to determine final student schedules.

The TLAC committee will review all Counsellor/CIT applications and contact selected students.

In April, all campers will receive a full program information package. The package will outline bus pick up times, all details of students’ individual program including items they may need to bring, a packing list, and additional general information about camp.

Cabin information will be provided to campers by the student cabin counsellors in early May.
