To whom it may concern

Dear Sir/Madam,

It was our pleasure this summer to have Mr. Chapin Griffith working with us in the Manufacturing Engineering

Department at ThyssenKrupp Presta Danville, LLC (TK-PDI). Here at TK-PDI we manufacture state of the art camshafts for the American, European and Australian automobile industry in our modern and highly automated

Illinois plant. Our mission is to develop and produce camshaft and valve-train assemblies for modern fuel efficient,

multi-fuel and hybrid cars, and light commercial vehicles,

As this year’s M.E. Intern, Chapin quickly assimilated into the engineering group, working under the auspices of

several of the engineers in various departments; primarily lobe machining, assembly and grinding. His work varied from clerical, through 3D drafting and obtaining quotations to hands-on machining, and in all respects lived up to

our expectations for timeliness and quality.

Project work included;

• Parts lists and bills of material for two recently installed lobe production lines.

o Pneumatics, controls and mechanical wear & tear parts. • Design & implement a pedestrian bridge to ease access to the new lobe production lines.

o 3D design working with another engineering intern.

o Create the RFQ and negotiate quotations with three potential engineering shops. o Work with the successful bidder to manufacture & install the new over-bridge.

• Develop a Poka Yoke for the manual placement of camshafts into a laser marking process.

o Design a simple, cheap and effective method to accurately locate a variety of similar camshafts (this was the challenge) into a finishing line, such that the robot arm would place the shaft more

precisely into the laser marker.

o Use a mill, engine lathe and hand tools to produce prototype parts. • Develop a design concept for a simple laser refractometer to quickly evaluate the degree of grinding

chatter on suspect parts. Although the grinding process measures every part we still rely upon a final visual

inspection to detect defects that cannot be measured in process. This device, once proven, could

eliminate the subjective element when deciding whether or not to make a process adjustment.

All of this work was carried out effectively and with minimal supervision.

Chapin communicates well and seemed to be very comfortable working within our group. I have polled the

engineers and team leaders, and they all agree that he will be a valued asset to the company that employs him. In

particular, it was a common theme to hear that he has a pleasant demeanor to all who worked with him and that he was industrious and motivated to learn as much as he could about our processes.

Sincerely,

Paul Slater
