The Jackson Women's League met March 1at Janelle's Bakery Shop. President LaurettaHuggins opened the meeting by thanking thehostesses Eleanor Brackman and Mary Con-roy, and leading the members in reading TheClub Woman's Collect.

Clinic Department of Plastic Surgery, who wasassisted by nurse Terry Ellis. She explainedvarious Cosmetic Procedures and said manyare covered by insurance. A brief businessmeeting was held followed by refreshments.

The next meeting will also be held atJanelle's on April 5 at 7 p.m.

Cosmetic Procedures program for JWL

The Friends Club held its regular monthlymeeting March 20, 2012. Present were:Janet Thurston, Barb Wasmer, MarthaStone, Margie Fisher and Nova Lovett withhostesses, Jane Miller and Alana Williamsand guest, Miranda Miller.

In the absence of the president, Vice-Pres-ident Janet Thurston opened the meeting byasking secretary-treasurer Nova Lovett toread the minutes from the February meetingand to present the treasurer's report. MarthaStone motioned and Margie Fisher second-ed that both be accepted as read.

Club members are continuing to makeplans for the raffle to be held at the Festivalof Flags. Donations have been receivedfrom several merchants in the Oak Hillarea. Ticket sales will begin at the yard salethe club will hold Saturday, April 14.

Tickets will be $1 each or six for $5. Thefinal list of prizes will be announced at theApril 17 meeting.

Members were reminded set-up for theyard sale will be Friday, April 13, starting at5 p.m. Any member of the public that hasdonations should bring them to the Madi-son-Jefferson Fire Department Bingo Hallbetween 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the 13th.Everything at the yard sale will be reason-ably priced to sell.

Planning is also going forward on theFriends Club Baby Contest to be held at theFestival of Flags Saturday, May 26, 2012.Sign-up will be from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. andthe contest will begin at 10 a.m.

The next meeting will be held April 17,2012 with Rose Leonard and Barb Wasmerserving as hostesses.

Friends Club ready for Festival of Flags

The March meeting of the Century Clubwas held at the Christ United MethodistChurch, called to order by President FredaLowery. “An Easter Prayer” was recited inunison. Irene Lloyd read “An Easter Story”followed by a group song, “Easter Parade.”

President Lowery introduced guest speak-er Bob Irons, the director of the SilverSneakers Fitness Program at the JacksonYMCA. The Silver Sneakers Fitness Pro-gram is the nation’s leading exercise pro-gram designed exclusively for older adults.A question-and-answer session followedMr. Irons’ very informative presentation.

Following the program, roll call wastaken and a report from the treasurer wasread and accepted.

Joan Shasteen presented a slate of offi-cers for the 2012-2013 club year: Presi-dent, Betty Chandler; Vice President,Joan Shasteen; Secretary, Juanita Clark;and Treasurer, Ann Sheward.

Martha Clark and Juanita Clark won theraffle prizes. A dessert and an array of can-

dies were served at a decorated table with aSt. Patrick’s Day motif. Hostesses wereJoan Shasteen, Martha Clark and BerthaJean Muffley. The next meeting was to beheld at Michael’s Ice Cream on Wednesday,April 18.

Girl Scouts organization showcasedin Wellston Rotary Club program

The March meeting of The Study Clubwas held at the home of Mrs. WalterLuhrman. The meeting was called to orderby President Mrs. Gregory Fields. Mrs.Luhrman introduced Sally Jones-McNama-ra, who presented a very interesting andinformative program about the GrandCanyon. The Grand Canyon is one of theSeven Wonders of the World. The size andbeauty of the canyon is awe-inspiring andbeyond description. It is 277 miles long and18 miles wide. It is judged to be 17 millionyears old. The sides present a complete geo-logical description of the earth's evolutionin pristine condition.

A short business meeting followed, inwhich the next year’s field of study wasintroduced. It will be about Civil War bat-tles, commemorating the 150th anniversaryof this war.

The April Travel Day will be a trip toHocking Hills State Park and the Inn atCedar Falls.

Bundy Elementary School announces honor rolls

Wellston Council President and candi-date for State Representative, Luke Scottrecently visited Oak Hill High SchoolSenior government classes to discuss hisupcoming bid for election as State Rep-resentative. Scott answered questionsfrom concerned voters in class.

Scott said he has three goals as StateRep: Education, Economy, and Trust.He believes southern Ohio is being leftbehind when it comes to education. Headded there has to be more job growth,but did not offer "empty promises" ofa quick turnaround. He promised to bea representative that the district cantrust in and that he is "taking a voice toColumbus." Scott said he will repre-sent everyone in the 93rd district.

When asked about his age being afactor, Scott said, "Our generation istaking over. Young people need to beinvolved. Young people are planningto leave southern Ohio and we need towork to keep them here."

Scott said he will not run a nega-tive campaign.

When asked if he prefers big busi-ness over local business, Scott replied,"We need to keep what local business-es we have and help them, but we alsoneed big corporations to stay competi-tive with other Ohio cities" and refer-enced highways 32/35 which couldattract manufacturing jobs.

Scott was asked several questions onthe problem of drug use. He said hesupported the efforts of Judge MarkMusick's drug court, and supportsgoing after violators, and hoped tofund programs through legislation thathelps stop the problem.

A new face on campus willbe providing assistance tonumerous University of RioGrande/Rio Grande Commu-nity College students and arearesidents over the next twoyears. The new face is actual-ly a former student, as LisaJones has returned to RioGrande from Wales and isnow serving as the DavisIntern in the Madog Centerfor Welsh Studies.

Jones, who is from Aberys-twyth, Wales, previouslystudied at Rio Grande as anexchange student while shewas a student at the Univer-sity of Wales, Trinity SaintDavid. The Madog Centercoordinates the exchangeprogram each year, andsends Rio Grande students tostudy in Wales during the fallsemester. Students from theUniversity of Wales, TrinitySaint David then study atRio Grande during the springsemester. Jeanne Jones Jin-dra, director of the Madog

Center, knew Jones when shewas an exchange student andis excited to have her nowserving as the Davis Intern.

“She has a really outgoingand engaging personality,”Jindra said. “She’s also anoutstanding singer.”

Established by Evan andElizabeth Davis, the intern-ship program is designed tobring an intern who is fluent

in Welsh and English to RioGrande each year to assistwith numerous projects andactivities on campus and inthe community. As the DavisIntern, Jones will live andwork on campus, but will alsobe active in the community.

After finishing her time atRio Grande as an exchangestudent, Jones graduatedfrom college and was cur-rently working as a class-room assistant for the WelshSchool of London. She wasalso working as a live-innanny in London. Her expe-rience working with childrenand schools made her a strongcandidate for the intern posi-tion, Jindra said. As the DavisIntern, she will be working onprograms with local schools,and her past experience willbe very valuable.

Jones is already busy in theMadog Center and on cam-pus, and feels right at home.

“I feel like I never left,” shesaid. Jones added she hasbeen happy to see many of thepeople she knew at RioGrande as a student, and she islooking forward to meetingnew people on campus and inthe community.

In addition to working as theDavis Intern, Jones will alsobe studying in Rio Grande’sMaster of Education in Inte-grated Arts program duringher time on campus. Joneswill serve as the Davis Internfor the next two years whileshe completes the program.

“I believe in continuouslearning,” Jones said. She islearning a lot in the master’sdegree program already, andsaid the degree program willhelp her in career.

An outstanding vocalistand performer, Jones planson making a career workingin the arts. While at RioGrande, she is also hoping tosing and perform with musi-cal groups on campus and inthe community. Her mainrole at Rio Grande, though,will be to help with differentprograms and activities atthe Madog Center.

The award-winning Buck-eye Hills offers a wide rangeof programs to high schooljuniors and seniors in threecounties, Gallia, Jackson,and Vinton. This is one of aseries of articles detailing theprograms offered in each ofthe Career Center's Acade-mies of Construction, Health,Manufacturing, Transporta-tion, Business and Market-ing, and Human Resources.Today's article features theprograms offered through theHuman Resources Academy.

Career Technical studentshave the opportunity toobtain certifications in all ofthe programs, and learn askilled trade, while finishingtheir high school career.Many times students willchoose to go directly into theworkforce, but with the addi-tion of Dual Enrollmentclasses, students have theoption to take classes for col-lege credit. Many programsoffer an articulation agree-ment with Rio Grande Com-munity College; this allowsthe successful completer ofthe program to earn 24semester hours towards anassociate degree.

Early Childhood Education(ECE) is a unique programthat focuses on child care in acenter-based setting. The stu-dents will learn about thegrowth and development ofpreschool age children. ECEalso studies daycare / nurseryschool operations and addi-tional skills in institutionalhousekeeping and commer-cial food preparation. A com-pleter is eligible to participatein Child DevelopmentalAssociate (CDA) Assess-ment, and take advantage ofthe articulation agreement forthe Associate Degree. EarlyChildhood Education stu-dents take trips to daycarecenters, where they createand implement their own les-sons for the children.

Cosmetology is an excit-ing program, which enablesstudents to develop skills inprofessional haircutting andstyling, facial and nail treat-

ments, permanent wavingtechniques, hair tinting andcoloring, and make-upapplication techniques.

Internships with areasalons are also available tohighly motivated and quali-fied students. Cosmetologystudents begin client serviceduring their senior year andprepare to take, the Ohio'sState Board examination.

Culinary Preparation (CP)follows a two-year curricu-lum called Prostart® whichwas developed by theNational Restaurant Associa-tion Foundation. Prostart® isbased on knowledge highschool students need to besuccessful in the restaurantindustry. The training that CPprovides is for management,practical skills, and opportu-nities for career exploration.The opportunity to earnindustry-recognized certifi-cates is available. FoodPreparation students work ina commercial kitchen usingmodern food equipment toprepare large quantities ofentrees, vegetables, anddesserts. Students also devel-op skills used in a restaurant,experience short-order serv-ice, food service, food stor-age, food preparation, recordkeeping, and customer rela-tions. Serving will take placein the “Corral”, a fully-equipped restaurant locatedon the BHCC campus.

Public Safety/Criminal Jus-tice is a two-year programthat focuses on competenciesin the area of legal bound-aries, routine patrol, tacticalpatrol procedures, criminalinvestigation, interview andinterrogations, crime sceneinvestigation, crime scenereconstruction, trafficenforcement, criminology,private security, and evidencecollection. In addition, stu-dents receive training inCPR/First Aid, and operationof the electronic monitoringsystem. Knowledge is gainedin the practical use of crimelab equipment and proce-dures, and a firsthand knowl-edge of forensic evidenceand collection, and basic labtesting. Volunteer Firefighterand First Responder certifi-cations can also be achievedduring the two-year program.
