LUTTERWORTH EMBROIDERERS’ GUILD Anne Brookes textile artist was warmly welcomed to the Guild's October meeting. The ladies heard how Anne's love of geography and nature inspires her work. There were many examples for all to see in detail later. The Guild had a stand at The Big Textile Show at Leicester Racecourse 29/30th October. This now annual event has plenty to offer to crafters of fabric and yarns and there were the usual array of sales stands to top up supplies. We welcomed Heather Jacks of Sewing Bee fame on November 24th and heard about Heather's time with the BBC during the making of The Great British Sewing Bee. The December meeting on the 8th will be a social occasion with a small fun project and announcement of the annual bursary winner for 2017. On January 26th, Jenni Dobson comes to the Guild with her talk entitled 'Kimono'. During February we welcome Andrew Wynne on the 23rd who will tell us about ‘Batik - Then and Now’. Meetings are generally held each fourth Thursday monthly at Wycliffe Memorial Church. Bitteswell Rd, Lutterworth, 7.30pm. As always, the afternoon was hugely enjoyable with the sheer enthusiasm of all taking part, from primary school pupils raising money for their own school, up to a team of ‘an older generation’, swimming to raise money for a Lutterworth based dementia care charity (The Lutterworth Share and Care Group). The money raised will make a real difference in our schools and our community. FEETFantastic FascinatingFestive Foot Facts!• The possibility of women developing footproblems is four times higher than men and themain reason is footwear. Now there’s a surprise!• Both your feet contain 52 bones and this is awhole quarter of all of your body’s bones. Whenthese bones don’t align well, the rest of your bodywill be affected as well.• Your foot’s sole has more sensory nerve endingsand sweat glands per square centimeter than canbe found on any other body part.• For many people, one foot is slightly bigger thanthe other. Up to 60% of the population don't havefeet the same size and 80% of these have a largerleft foot but this doesn’t mean they should weardifferent sized shoes.• On an average day of walking, the forces on yourfeet can sum up to hundreds of tons, which mayequate to the weight of a truck loaded with cement. • Foot diseases may be the first indicator of morecomplicated medical issues. The state of your feetreflects your general health, so conditions such asdiabetes, circulatory disorders, nerve issues andarthritis can manifest their initial symptomsthrough your feet. • About 19% of the population has approximately1.4 foot problems every year. • About 75% of you will face foot problems at acertain point in your lifetime.• About 5% of the UK have calluses or corns.• Up to 5% of the population experiences ingrowntoenail problems yearly.• Sprains and strains form up to 60% of all injuriesaround the ankle and foot for people aged 17 andabove. • About 6% of the UK population has bunions, footinjuries, fallen arches or flat feet diagnosed everyyear.• The most common problems affecting people areingrown toenails and heel pain.• You can no longer have your toe nails cut on theNHS.2017 is my 20th year caring for your feet. To youand your feet - thank you!

BONES &GROANS

PAINFUL HIPSOne of the most common causes of hip pain is osteo-arthritis (wear and tear). This degeneration can start inyour 30s and manifests as groin pain that can spread intothe thigh and knee. Many knee pains are mis-diagnosed asthey originate from the hip. Pain is usually worse onweight-bearing and impact and the leg rotation movementseg swivelling or getting in or out of a car are stiff.A Chartered Physiotherapist can treat this condition withhands on joint mobilising techniques, electrotherapy andteach special exercises. Although we cannot make theunderlying arthritis disappear we can ease the pain, restoremobility, prevent deterioration and delay the need forsurgery. If the pain is on the outer aspect of the upper thigh nearthe bony prominence at the top of your leg it may betrochanteric bursitis. This is inflammation of the fluid filledsac that separates soft tissues from the bone beneath. If thesurrounding muscles are tight friction may occur leading toa ‘snapping’ sensation. A Chartered Physiotherapist cantreat this as well. Strengthening exercises can be learnt to prevent limping or ‘waddling‘ when walking.Physiotherapists are the experts in walking patterns andspend many hours training to assess and treatmobility/gait abnormalities.Sometimes pain in the groin or buttock is referred from thelower back. In fact 70% hip problems have a spinalcomponent. It is therefore essential that your pain isassessed by an expert to ensure accurate diagnosis andappropriate treatment. To see a Chartered Physiotherapist privately you do notneed to be referred by your doctor.

Talking Computers

THINK BEFORE YOU CLICKA common way of getting a computerinfection is by what is called a 'Phishing'email - that is an email pretending to befrom a trustworthy source.

Quickly spot the red flags and putphishing emails where they belong:-

1. Poor spelling and grammar: Whileoccasional spelling mistakes happen toeven the best of us, errors throughout theentire message should be a warning sign.

2. An offer too good to be true? Freeitems or a lottery win sound great, butwhen the offer comes out of nowhere -there’s definitely cause for concern. Do not get carried away or click withoutinvestigating.

3. Random sender: Phishing hasadvanced in recent years to include anemail or offer designed especially for youor your business. Details from public news, such as a recent function or award orsocial media can be used against you. Ifthe sender is unknown and you do notknow them in any way, be careful.

4. The website or email address is notquite right: One of the most effectivetechniques used in phishing emails is touse addresses which sound almost right. For example, [microsoft.info.com] or [pay-pal.com].

Hover over the link with your mouse - if itdoesn’t look right or is completely differentfrom the link text, send that email to thebin.

5. Personal, financial or businessdetails: Alarm bells should ring when anymessage contains a request for personal, business or financial information, especially passwords.

Please see advert below to discusshow we can secure your system againstcostly phishing attacks.

Richard Page ClockmakerClock Repair Specialist Richard Page is partof a family that has been repairing clocks toexacting standards for over 100 years.Richard himself has been a clockmaker since1976.

Traditional skills, professional qualificationsand friendly personal service have been theguiding principles for the businesses across 3generations.

The family tradition began with HenryWilliam Page, who was educated in London asan apprentice in the skilful art of Horology(watchmaking) by Swiss and GermanHorologists, eventually setting up the businessof H. W. Page Watchmaker in 1912 in the areaof Pondersend, North London.

The business soon became H. W. Page &Son with Ronald Page, Henry's son enteringthe business as a watchmaker. As with all Pagehorologists, Ronald started young at the age of9 in 1929 working by gas light!

During 1940 H. W. Page relocated toIbstock, Leicestershire - the Edmonton shopbeing damaged in the blitz. It was here thatRon’s son Keith would learn about horologyand work alongside his Grandfather andFather.

H. W. Page died in 1960 and the businessrelocated to 91–93 High St - the currentpremises. Get wrapped up for Funky Scarf Day 2017!Charity Link, which supports people in poverty, hardshipor crisis throughout Leicestershire, is asking localindividuals, schools and businesses to support its annualdress up event, Wear A Funky Scarf Day, which will take place on Friday 27th January 2017 aspart of Poverty Action Week (23rd – 29th January).

This is the third year of Wear a Funky Scarf Day (WFSD), a simple and fun way to help raisefunds in support of Charity Link’s work. People are simply asked to wear their most funky orfavourite scarf for the day and donate an amount of their choice for the pleasure. The funds raisedwill enable Charity Link to improve the lives of local people in desperate need by supplying itemsthat most of us take for granted, including beds, cookers and clothing. The charity also offers helpwith the cost of utilities and, in emergencies, food.

Charity Link Director, Susan McEniff says, “Many of the people that Charity Link helps –including elderly and disabled people, the victims of domestic violence and those with a chronicillness – will struggle to keep warm over winter or have to make the awful decision between eatingand heating. Wear a Funky Scarf Day enables us to help more people in real hardship to keepwarm, have a hot meal and to sleep in a bed at night”.

People can order a free fundraising pack via the Charity Link website at www.charity-l i n k . o r g / p o v e r t y -action-week or simplywear their scarves onthe day and donate anamount of their choiceto the charity.

WYCLIFFE LUTTERWORTH U3A TWYCROSS ZOO

Speaker: Nicky Judd, Education OfficerMany will remember the Chimpanzee Tea Party and the PGTips advert of the 70’s. Although charming in their time, todaythis anthropomorphic training would be consideredinappropriate for species of the Ape family.

Founded by Mollie Badham in 1962, the Zoo now houses 150different species. The aim of such zoos is to eventually releaseanimals into their own wild habitat, but this can take up to threegenerations of breeding. Twycross Zoo is a Conservation Charity.Within this ideal, it has many other facets, providing educationfor schools, research opportunities for university students andrecreation for those visiting the nature reserves, which offers avaried and stimulating day out for all ages.

Due to the loss of habitat, trophy hunting, poaching and the furand pet trade, the breeding of endangered animals is a vitalconservation aim, which is being admirably pursued at Twycross- a zoo where animals’ welfare is a priority.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at10.30am at Lutterworth Methodist Church. New members arewelcome.

Dunton Bassett W.I.Our September meeting was a fun evening when Alison Rocket came along and showed ushow to make a bracelet out of recycled paper, when finished we were able to take our bracelethome. This was something she did to raise money for a village in Africa involving the ladiesof the village as well.

October we had our AGM where our officers remained the same. November Colleen Powelltalked on hedgehog rescue something she was very dedicated about and had been involved withfor over twenty years. We were in awe when she showed us a young hedgehog she had broughtalong. Hedgehogs are in decline and we must do all we can to help them.

We are a small group of only fourteen members and welcome visitors to our meetings, you willbe made most welcome. Why not come along to our December 13th meeting when CarolineWood will be showing us how to make a Christmas Wreath.

A Choral WorkshopSaturday 22nd October saw nearly 80 singers from as far away as Loughboroughand Daventry turn up at the Lutterworth High School for a ‘Come and Sing’ ChoralWorkshop. Organised by the Rotary Club of Lutterworth Wycliffe, the workshopwas open to all those of any age and ability, the only criteria being a love of singing. The music chosen for the day was the well known Vivaldi’s Gloria, the day being led

by Conductor Robert Foreman, B Mus, FRCO, the Director of Music at Market BosworthParish Church and a specialist in choir training. Starting at 11.30am with a break for lunch at 1pm, rehearsals continued until 4pm

when there was a further break for light refreshments of tea and cake (tea and coffee hadbeen kindly donated by Morrisons and a selection of cakes donated by Valerie’s CakeBoutique of Lutterworth). Family and friends of the singers were invited to join us for the refreshments before

listening to what had been achieved during the day - and what an achievement! Threesoloists, Abigail Riley, Courtney Lawrence and Anna Herbert, all pupils of Robert Formanjoined the choir to sing the solo parts and together, succeeded in creating a memorableperformance. This was the first time the Rotary Club

had attempted an event such as this andwas organised with a certain amount oftrepidation. However, we can nowconfidently say that the event was atremendous success and through a smallregistration charge for the singers plusgenerous donations from the audience, raised nearly £800 for the RainbowsChildren’s Hospice and the LutterworthHigh School music department.

Broughton Astley W.I.Our November meeting was our AGM,when our Secretary reported on what wehad been involved in over the past year, which has included refreshments at theVillage Carnival, a Group Quiz eveningand our WI Group’s Annual meeting.President, Mrs Julia Surfleet was re-electedand our Committee agreed to serve in theircurrent roles for the forthcoming year.

We have had another year of interestingguest speakers and a wide variety of visits tothe theatre and places of interest. Now we arelooking forward to a Christmas lunch, ourDecember Faith Supper and dressing ourChristmas tree as part of the Christmas TreeFestival at St Mary’s Church, BroughtonAstley.

We start 2017 with a visit to thePantomime at the Concordia Theatre,Hinckley and our guest speaker in January isa Beauty Consultant from Boots who willgive a talk on cosmetics and demonstrationsof mini facials and hand and nail massage

BLABY BOWLSAt our recent ladies AGM, Kath Murraywas voted in as President for 2017. A verypopular lady member, always ready to stepinto any of the men’s teams. The men’s AGM was also held last month.

It was announced we had recently lostformer Captain Maurice Furborough whosadly passed away. The 2017 league season begins on Tuesday

25th April with an away fixture versusLeicester which should be very interesting. Our Monday B team manager will now be

Dave Lane. Dave also reported Blaby BowlsClub had been voted runner up in the Blabyand District sports awards which was a verynice way to finish the meeting. Unfortunately our 1st indoor game of the

season resulted in a defeat 110 to 115 toCarlton Bowls Club, our only winning rinkbeing skipped by Brian Hawkins. Our very popular Christmas bingo will be

held on Saturday 17th December.

J. Wells & Son‘The End of An Era’

The TV and Radio shop has closed the doors at4 Station Road in Lutterworth. Jack Wellsopened for business 83 years ago in MarketStreet, but the third generation (Peter Wells)has seen the biggest changes, both intechnology and shopping habits.

“We’ve always taken pride in offeringcustomers advice and the time to choose andlisten to a Roberts Radio or Sound System forexample, that level of service is not available inthe big shops or online. We look forward tocontinuing that tradition by offering free localdelivery and home demonstrations. Our newwebsite is still under construction, althoughmany customers prefer to contact us by phone oremail”.

A new aspect to the business recognises theneed for a comprehensive installation service, even for those big TV bargains that have beenbagged elsewhere online. Adding a new piece ofequipment such as a catch-up TV recorder to anexisting set-up can be problematical, with littlehelp from instruction books or the originalsupplier, whether bought during the recentinternet shopping bonanza or even last year.

The Wells family would like to thank all theirloyal customers for their support and best wishesfor future ventures. A very different prospect willappear next year at 4 Station Road.

Lutterworth Field Working & Archaeological GroupAs a group of amateur archaeologists, we endeavour to unearth what we can historically aboutour local area by walking the fields, digging test pits and recording all that we find. This can beanything from worked flint tools to Roman coins, medieval pottery and clay pipes.

Weather permitting, ploughed and harrowed fields are systematically searched for anything theplough may have turned up. This takes place usually on a Sunday morning during the autumn andwinter. Later, we gather together again for an analysis meeting to discuss, date and record our‘treasures’.

We are affiliated to the Leicestershire Fieldworkers Group. Test Pits can be dug at any timeduring the year and can yield surprising results, sometimes very little and at other times heaps ofdemolition rubble. However, the results are usually somewhere in between, we have foundassorted pieces of pottery, clay pipe and animal bone and occasionally coins, buttons, toys andother objects. Each layer is recorded and the pit is reinstated at the end with as little impact aspossible to the owners’ property.

We have also been excavating a local site and this will be continued in the new year. These activities are subject to the landowners’ and in the case of field walking, also the farmers’

permission. Some of the items we have found are on display at the Lutterworth Museum / One Stop Shop

on Gilmorton Road. For further information please contact Judith - [email protected] or Mike -

Q: I’ve just come back from a package holiday where our hotelwas miles away from where we booked. We couldn’t contactanyone to change hotels and had to pay to travel back andforwards to the destination we’d booked. Can I claimcompensation?

A: It’s reasonable to ask for compensation when you haven’t gotthe holiday you paid for.

Your accommodation should be as agreed. If not, it’s usuallyconsidered a breach of contract.

You can’t claim the total cost of the holiday, but you can ask to be reimbursed for the extratravel costs, plus a fair sum for the change to your holiday.

Start by writing an email or letter to the tour operator’s customer services department.Give your booking reference number, explain your grievance and specify the amount ofcompensation you’d like.

As evidence for your claim, include the details of when you tried to contact your touroperator while you were away and copies of any taxi or car hire receipts.

The firm may come back with an initial offer that is lower than what you are asking for, sobe prepared to negotiate.

If you’re not offered any compensation, check your tour operator’s website to see if theybelong to a UK trade body, like ABTA. If they do, you can lodge a new complaint throughthe trade body’s website. The tour operator is obliged to respond to the complaint.

Should you still not receive a satisfactory response, contact the Citizens Advice consumerservice or visit citizensadvice.org.uk for guidance on your next steps.

Safe tosay it was not her favourite food, though their ice-cream and children's parties were stoutlydefended by others afterwards. Edward Taylorcompleted the session with a reading onAmerican culture. Then Allan Rimmer set the Topics session.

Resplendent in a stars-and-stripes tie, he gaveeveryone a different angle. Visitor Nina flew overNew York in a hot-air balloon; Edward lived in aneerie house in Death Valley; Dave Hanger queriedthe moon landings; Sarah Waters travelled alongRoute 66; Allan Heggs had a chat with AbeLincoln and visitor Roy Sutton discussed hisPresidential priorities. Lutterworth Wine CircleIn October our presenters were two of our ownmembers Phil and Una Ashton, who sharedwith us their experiences of an ‘Oz Clarke’inspired wine cruise.

The opportunities offered on the cruise wereextensive, resulting in Phil and Una taking a greatdeal of time in choosing both regions of interestand wine selected from those regions to presentfor our benefit.

The first tasting was from Portugal, a VinhoVerde ‘Quinta de Azevedo 2013, a brightcitrus/lime with a spritz finish - a good starter.

Next, a Chateau Ducla 2007, ‘Entre DeuxMers’, not to everyone’s taste but a classic withelegance and class.

Our first red a Calvert Reserve Bordeaux 2014with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this haddark fruit, raisins and berries in abundance withbalanced tannins, a pleasure!

From St Emilion, a Grande Cru Chateau HautMontil 2012. A classic wine which did notdisappoint, with its marriage of fruit and graphiteovertones.

To finish the night on a ‘high’ we were treatedto a reserve port, Ferreira Dona Antonia Reserva. This, from one of the oldest houses, gave us atawny wine of intensity through slow maturation, resulting in an elegance to appreciate.

Our thanks to Phil and Una for what was amost enjoyable experience.

History of the Christmas Tree

Why do we celebrate Christmas using aChristmas tree?

It began many years ago in NorthernEurope. An English Monk named Bonifacewas a missionary to Germany and hewanted to give the people a symbol of lifeto celebrate Christ’s Birthday.

As Christmas falls in the middle ofwinter, many trees have lost all their leavesand so only an evergreen is truly alive atthat time of the year.

Boniface chose a fir tree and decorated itin homage to Christ and the traditionbegan.

Throughout the next nine centuriesthe Christmas tree was used inChristian homes and celebrationsthroughout Germany and otherparts of Northern Europe.

When you have a realChristmas tree in your homeyou are continuing over1,200 years of traditionalChristian celebration!

Motoring Matters!

TYRESCorrect tyre care and maintenance is critical foryour safety, no matter what type of vehicle you aredriving. Follow these basic tips to help prolongthe life of your tyres, reduce your fuel bills andCO2 emissions and ensure your vehicle canbrake, accelerate and corner properly. Why not use this simple checklist:• Air pressure – under or over inflated tyres can have a detrimental effect upon the life of your tyre along with an increase in fuel consumption and a decrease in the vehicle to accelerate, brake and corner correctly.

•Condition – the integrity and condition of your tyres are paramount. Turn your steering on to full lock to enable you to check the sidewalls and tread of your tyres for cuts and foreign objects.

• Tread depth – the legal limit for most vehicles is 1.6mm over the centre 3/4 of your tread pattern (see picture above). Most tyres will also have a raised rubber band running through your tread pattern. When the tyre starts wearing closer to the band, it’s time to start thinking about replacing your tyres.

Remember: any uneven tread wear may be a sign ofincorrect tyre pressures, a fault with the integrity of thetyre or a potential issue with your steering or suspension.

Wishing all of our Customers a Happy Christmas and New year!

LUTTERWORTH & DISTRICTTWINNING ASSOCIATIONA group of 13 French visitors from our twin Town of Chambourcyhave recently enjoyed participating in the weekend of eventsbeginning with the Lights Switch On. The Sounds of Christmasconcert was enjoyed by all and the Santa Fun Run was an experiencewhich will not be forgotten!

We have now established a strong link between Lutterworth HighSchool and the Secondary School in Chambourcy and students in bothschools are practising and hopefully improving their language skills.

We are focussing our activities on young people and their familiessince a modern language skill is so important for the next generation.

We are recruiting new members who would like to take advantage ofthe opportunities we can offer to both young people and adults. We canarrange social media contacts using email, Skype etc which are an

excellent way to practise some French and to make new friends. We can link families and you can join in one of our regular exchange

visits. We also hold regular social events, usually with a French flavour.Teenagers from Chambourcy have made extended visits to

Lutterworth and stayed with local families to improve their English, thesehave been followed by an exchange visit to France by the English hosts.

There are opportunities next summer for ‘au pair’ type workexperience in France.

These activities are always undertaken in a safe environment, bothtowns now have a number of residents who have been members for manyyears and we work together to support any young visitors. We take themon visits, include them in social activities and, of course, can provide asympathetic ear in their own language!

Christmas House Plant CareCyclamen, Amaryllis, Poinsettias & Orchidsare some of the most popular gifts given atChristmas. Here are a few tips to get the bestfrom them and keep them going into nextyear.

Cyclamen are tender plants originallynative to the south-east Mediterraneanregions and North Africa but it does not meanthat they like lots of heat. Cyclamens prefer acoolish room where temperatures do not riseabove 21C during the day. They also like a lotof light but prefer not to be placed on awindowsill particularly at this time of year asthey can get cold when the curtains are drawnand scorched when the sun shines. Cyclamensare best watered from the bottom. Do notallow the plant to stand in water for too longbecause if the corm is allowed to get too wet, itcan rot. It is also useful to provide a liquid feedevery two weeks. When the leaves start to goyellow move the plant to a cool shady place torest and water occasionally so the compostdoesn’t dry out. Then in mid September bringback to a bright and warmer room, repot ifnecessary and treat as before and hopefully itwill re flower.

Amaryllis bulbs areoften given as ‘grow-your-own’ packs atChristmas. Follow theinstructions on the packetand plant up your bulb inthe growing medium. They only need wateringwhen the growing

medium dries out and do not need feed as itshould provide enough nutrient to see thebulb to flowering. The stems can grow tall so

you will need to provide a cane to support it.They also have a tendency to grow towards thelight so it is best to rotate them every other dayor so to try and keep them straight. Once theyhave flowered cut the stem back by the bulband allow the foilage to grow. They will thenneed a liquid feed every couple of weeks. Inthe summer when the leaves start to fade placeit somewhere cool and allow the dry out. Thenin late autumn give it agood soak and bring theplant into the warm andit should start all overagain.

Poinsettias(Euphorbia Pulcherima)Available in many

colours, modern treatments keep plantscompact and bushy. They like bright, indirectsunlight and prefer humid conditions so youmay want to mist your plant if your home isvery dry due to heating. Let the compost dryout between watering, it should be dry to thetouch, never wet. Poinsettias are sensitive toextreme temperatures so don’t place yourplant next to a heater or near a draughtywindow or doorway. Avoid hightemperatures, 55 – 60 *f max will provideperfect conditions for your poinsettia.

OrchidsThese interesting plants can be found in a

range of colours and sizes depending on thevariety. Orchids require little care once alltheir basic needs are met such as light, temperature and humidity.Place orchids in an east to south facing

window or room. They prefer bright, indirectlight. Insufficient light results in poorflowering. However, too much light can lead

to leaf scorch.Orchids need ample water but should be

allowed to dry out quite a bit betweenwatering.Orchid plants need adequate humidity,

about 50 – 70 %. There are various ways toincrease the humidity in your home. Place awater filled saucer or tray of pebbles beneathplants, mist plants daily or use a humidifier.Temperature is also important for orchid

care. While they tolerate cooler or warmertemperatures throughout their normalgrowing season, they need to be about 15degrees cooler at night than during the day inorder to bloom sufficiently.Fertilize orchids weekly or bi-weekly while

they are producing new growth and decreaseto monthly or bi-monthly once they mature.Discontinue altogether once the plants ared o rm a n t .Additionalorchid caretips includerepot t ing ,which isn o r m a l l ydone everyother year. If your orchid suddenly stopsblooming but has suitable light, temperatureand humidity, then repotting may benecessary. Also keep an eye out for signs ofpests or disease. Orchids are occasionallyaffected by mealybugs, scale and aphids. Thesecan usually be washed off or treated withinsecticidal soap.Look after your Christmas plants well and

they will bring you much enjoyment over theChristmas period and hopefully well into2017!

Taking Care ofWildlife in YourGarden The winter can be a struggle for many ofthe birds that overwinter in the UK and alittle food, water and shelter can go a longway to helping them through the coldmonths of the year and keep them healthyfor breeding next year.

Over half of the UK population regularlyfeed the birds in their gardens, withbirdfeeders full of peanuts and seeds, kitchenscraps and dishes of water beingcommonplace. Such steps are the obviousways of providing for the wildlife in ourgardens and encouraging children tounderstand the importance of looking afterour feathered garden visitors.

In addition to putting out a variety of foodin feeders and on bird tables, there is muchmore you can do to help a variety of wildlife.Maintaining a healthy, flourishing garden isone of the best ways for making sure thatbirds and other animals in your area havesomewhere safe and inviting to live or visit –and it’s one of the best ways for you to enjoythe wildlife that your garden attracts.

Just by making a few changes in yourgarden you will be able to enjoy the birds andother wildlife.

Celebrating 20 years of LOROS LotteryLOROS Lottery began with 2,185 players in our first draw in October 1996;we now have over 24,500 players each paying £1 per week to help fund ourpatient care.

Lottery Manager Liz Singleton lost her mum to cancer in March 1996, that’show she knew what a fantastic place LOROS was. By June 1996 she was workingfor us. “It just felt right. Some people might say it was too soon after mum dying, but me, I say itwas as if mum had guided me into the role”.

LOROS Lottery was a brand new initiative, a new form of income generation and Liz wasexcited about getting involved and that’s when it all began. LOROS Lottery was born!

It was only meant to be a 10 year project. Now there is a team of ten working in the office with100 collectors and 25 volunteers working within the community. “I can’t help but feel so proudof all that we have achieved”. Last year alone LOROS Lottery raised around £550,000. That couldpay for the annual cost of looking after 36 patients on our ward. I’m excited to give LOROSLotteries the 20th Birthday it deserves and celebrate everything we have achieved”.

For more details please contact the Lottery helpline on 0116 231 8430 or visit www.loros.co.uk

Dear Friends What a busy year we have had! We would like to thank all those who have spent the year with ushaving fun....either at our activities or on our many excursions.

We are an independent local charity whose area of benefit is the town of Lutterworth and the 27 surrounding villages. Most of those villages are small with few amenities or adequate transport links, indeed some do not have a bus service andonly 4 have a post office/shop. Consequently whilst the area is reasonably affluent in terms of income the biggest problemfor older people is isolation and loneliness. Our mission statement is ‘To promote the well being of all older people

and to make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience’. We do this by providing services thatpromote social inclusion as it is a proven fact that friendship and communication with othersactually prolongs life.

All the services we provide are financially subsidised by the charity they include. Weekly LineDancing and Board games, weekly Exercise Class with a Drop In, monthly Travelling Lunch, monthly Excursions, monthly Bingo and monthly Tea & Natters. At least three times a year wehold party events with entertainment and these are extended to local care homes to includeresidents who have difficulty getting out, where possible we fund transport through thecommunity transport service.

Our shop on the Lutterworth Market Square raises the funds needed to organise and support theaforementioned services. There you will also find our office which acts as an Advice andInformation sign post to local people and other service providers when required.

We look forward to spending time with you all next year. If you are new to the area, live aloneor recently find yourself on your own why not give us a call or pop into the office and speak withour staff.

On behalf of our Trustees, Volunteers and Staff we wish you all a peaceful and healthyChristmas & New Year. Alison Anderton - Events/Services & Shop Manager

It was an excellentturnout on a cold but bright, sunny day with over 300 local residents attending. Special thanks should go to the volunteerswho helped with the road closure and marshalling.

For the next three months we will be busy with budgetpreparations for 2017 and winter maintenance.

LEADERS FARM CEMETERYLutterworth Town Council has recently become a BurialAuthority and we are pleased to announce that our new cemeteryat Leaders Farm is open. COMMUNITY FACILITY STUDYe Town Council has commissioned the Leicestershire Rural Community Council to carry out a community facility studywhich in essence is to undertake a review and simple audit of existing community facilities in Lutterworth and to gauge a viewof the users of these facilities. We would very much like to hear your views on the community facilities in Lutterworth and wouldappreciate it if you would take part in the survey which can be found by visiting www.rcc.org.uk/survey .

Santa Fun Run – Eight Years On Having had a week of inclement weather before Sunday the 27th November,we were again blessed with a dry if a little cold and overcast day bringing a smile to people’s faces both runners and spectators. We had a slightincrease in the number of Santas taking part from last year achieving 812.

It was nice to see many families with young children taking part, as well as youth sports teams and people who came from all over the country tobe part of the event.

This year was unusual as a groupof people from the TwinningAssociation in Chambourcy tookpart and 2 visitors from Mongoliadonned suits & participated & willbe taking their suits home as a reminder of what the quirky British do tocelebrate the start of the Christmas season.

Final financial figures have not been published yet for the designatedcharities which this year are: the Air Ambulance (Derbys. Leics & Rutland)– Vista (Leicester, Leics & Rutland) for people with sight loss. – LOROS –Home - Start (South Leics & Blaby) supporting families with youngchildren – Lutterworth Mayor’s Appeal – Rotary supported charities.

Everyone who attended said howmuch they enjoyed our annual event.

May we say a big thank you to all formaking it such a successful day underour very capable organiser John Turner.

Lutterworth Christmas Lights Switch-On 2016We couldn’t have asked for better weather to hold this year’sChristmas Lights Switch-On event. It was a gloriously sunny andsharp winter’s day and we were overwhelmed by the sheer number ofyou who came out to enjoy the festivities.

The Christmas Market stalls were relocated this year to variouslocations throughout the Town centre and they opened up proceedingsat 3.30pm.

Santa appeared on his sleigh at 5.30pm and rode through the Townwaving at the crowds before arriving at his grotto in the memorialgarden. As predicted, Santa attracted a huge crowd of children, alleager to tell him what they would like for Christmas and he stayed forwell over two hours. Just next door, Lutterworth Town Bandentertained passersby with aselection of traditional carols.

The funfair was again a majorattraction whilst Barry Badger fromHarborough FM Radio kicked offthe stage entertainment. Heintroduced some wonderfulperformances from the local schoolsand colleges and the evening endedwith the beautiful voice of CharlotteCrosier who sang some songs fromFrozen after being joined on stage with a special guest appearance fromOlaf.

Three of our local retailers basked in the glory of winning the BestIlluminated (All Wrapped Up), Best Dressed (Sheilar’s Craft Corner)

and Most Innovative (Age ConcernLutterworth & District) shop windowcompetitions – their prizes kindlydonated by Waitrose.

The Lutterworth Town Mayor, CllrGeraldine Robinson was on stagewith District Cllr Janette Ackerleyand County Cllr Rosita Page to switchon the Christmas lights, which wasfollowed once again by a spectacularfireworks display, watched by thecrowd gathered in the Town Hallsquare.

Throughout the evening hot mulled wine was enjoyed in LutterworthChristmas mugs whilst there was also an opportunity to do a spot of latenight Christmas shopping in the shops that had stayed open in theTown. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service brought along their fireengine, much to the delight of the children who were allowed to have asit in the driver’s seat.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and so that wasit for another year.

Lutterworth Town Council would like to thank all the localbusinesses who sponsored the event and donated their time and moneyto ensure the evening was a great success. We would like to particularlythank Semelab who sponsored the firework display this year. Also, theevent could not happen without the support of the many volunteermarshals, including the 29F (Rugby) Squadron ATC, so a very specialthank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success.

Christmas at Ulverscroft Santa will be making a very special appearance on Saturday 10thDecember, between 10am – 4pm at the Foundation’s fundraisingChristmas festive fair. There will be a selection of festive stalls and the opportunity to meet

Santa! Admission to Santa’s Grotto is £5 per child to include a small gift. Thetearooms will be serving delicious warming refreshments and thespectacular model railway will be open and running. Helen Baxter, Activities Coordinator at the Foundation said, “This is a

wonderful opportunity to come along and enjoy the festive spirit whilstrelaxing in the Tea Rooms, browsing the charity shops and enjoying themagnificent views across the forest”.Ulverscroft Grange, Whitwick Road, Ulverscroft, Markfield,
