Rustic Pathways to New Orleans Join Rustic Pathways in their seventh year helping to rebuild New Orleans to be better than it has ever been! Rebuild houses, help out in the ecological recovery of the wetlands, and learn what it takes to rebuild an entire city from the ground up. Visit the historic French Quarter, spend time down by the Mississippi River, eat some local favorites, hear jazz in the city of it's birth, and meet the people who make this city special. Days will be spent doing community service, evenings you will explore the Big Easy with the group. Learn why and how we are rebuilding New Orleans, and how to protect it from happening again.

What’s Cooking?!In the cooking tiyul, students will be experiencing a culinary adventure! Students will visit top restaurants and will be taught about what a culinary professional goes through everyday. You will see what goes on behind the scenes of a restaurant and what the roles of different chefs are in a kitchen. In fact, students will be meeting with Milken Community High School’s very own chef Micah Wexler! You will see what it takes for a restaurant to be kosher and how it is different from a regular restaurant. Finally, students will take courses in the culinary arts where they will cook different kinds of dishes.

Rose Rios Project!

This tiyul will give students a chance to work with the team that developed and implemented a business plan for the Rose Rios Project. The tiyul will give students a chance to meet business leaders in the community to discuss various business plans that can be used in real life situations. This tiyul will also provide an opportunity to earn 10 hours of Service Learning credit.

City Lights - Photography of Day and Night in Los Angeles!Grab a camera and immerse yourself in the city you love!! You will travel to picturesque locations to capture the light of Venice Beach and Joshua Tree and even take a boat ride to get coastal views of L.A. You will spend time taking pictures of the night life at City Walk and the Santa Monica Pier. Learn more about professional photography by visiting LACMA and The Annenberg Space for Photography. Concluding our photographic journey, you will develop a presentation of your work, whether it be a display, digital presentation or bound booklet. Grades 10-12

Recycling and Greening Tiyul!

During the Recycling and Greening Tiyul, we will be learning about the process of recycling while helping the environment. The first half of the tiyul will focus on recycling, during which time we’ll visit a processing center and learn about landfills. During the second half, we will work with Tree People to plant trees in order to give back to what we’ve torn down, and also work with Heal the Bay to help replenish the ocean. After we spend some time picking up the litter on the beach, we’ll spend the day on the sand relaxing and enjoying the beauty of nature. We will video tape and photograph the tiyul and turn it into a video to show the school, so even people who don’t attend can learn about recycling and greater appreciate the world we live in.

American Dreams - American Realities !Both Americans and Jews see themselves as uniquely responsible to build communities that will serve as models for the rest of humanity. On this tiyul, we will encounter different expressions of Jewish and American ideals and see what happens when they confront difficult realities. Experiences will include: sites representing both Jewish and other American religious ideals,the ideal America portrayed at Disneyland, challenges to American idealism at Manzanar and the Owens Valley, and a day of community service through Learning for Life and Exploring at Santee Education Complex.

Dance L.A.!Students will spend the week meeting with and shadowing choreographers, instructors, and performers to gain an understanding of what is involved in the creative, business and performance aspects of professional dance. The focus will be on ballet, hip-hop, contemporary and theatrical dance. Students will spend time at a leading commercial dance complex, inner-city dance academy and boutique dance studio to get a flavor of the different approaches to teaching dance and what challenges are involved in pursuing a career in this discipline. The program will include activities such as: taking dance classes at various studios, having Q & A time with members of L.A.’s dance community, and a class on the techniques of auditioning.

Colorado River Trip - Grade 9The Colorado River trip presents Grade 9 students with the opportunity to learn self-reliance and develop their outdoor skills and appreciation of nature in the context of a 4-day trip canoeing down the Lower Colorado River. Students will study issues related to the Jewish understanding of nature, water conservation and the preservation of natural resources. This trip is mandatory for all Grade 9 students.

Habitat for Humanity!Once again, Milken students will have a chance to contribute to the world by working with Habitat for Humanity, an international charity organization. This year’s program will take place in Thousand Oaks, California, where students will participate in the construction of single family residences. The students will commute to the construction site daily by bus from Milken. The group will get the opportunity to learn about teamwork and the dedication it takes to build a home. Students will discuss and document their experiences, and upon completion of the program will earn 10 hours of Service Learning credit.

East Coast College TourStudents in Grade 11 will visit colleges in various metropolitan areas on the East Coast including New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. They will gain a better understanding of both the obvious and nuanced differences among varying types of colleges and universities (urban/suburban, small/large, research-oriented/liberal arts, highly selective/less selective, etc). This, in turn, will enable them to make informed choices about which colleges and universities are most suitable for their needs and learning abilities. Amusement Park Physics! !We will visit four different amusement parks: Magic Mountain, Knott’s Berry Farm, the Santa Monica Pier and Universal Studios. We will see how the laws of physics are used to make rides thrilling, yet very safe. Concepts such as speed, acceleration, forces, and energy will be discussed. We will be using the math of physics to compute several problem sets related to the creation and safety issues of amusement park rides.

Remember Us! !Connecting teens with Holocaust Survivors for conversations, reflection and artistic expression of the Survivor's stories. Expressing profound emotions, they will reflect on lessons learned by telling personal stories that show the ups and downs of the human experience. Students will help Survivors to tell their own stories through conversations and professional interviews, passing the stories on to other students and future generations. The course will integrate the missions and goals of the school as well as Judaism via the implementation of compassion, empathy and responsibility. This course will further serve to foster generous hearts and kind souls.

March of the Living!

This course is sponsored by the Bureau of Jewish Education. Seniors apply for the program and are accepted in March. The course involves travel to the Concentration Camps of World War II and intense discussions with survivors of those camps who accompany the group. The students end the trip in Israel with the commemoration of Israeli soldiers and the celebration of Israel Independence Day.

Mexico Exchange!Select students in Spanish III Honors participate in an exchange program with Colegio Israelita de Mexico, D.F. (CIM) located in Mexico City. Milken students are partnered with counterparts in CIM. As preparation for the actual exchange, students in both schools use email and video-conferencing to learn and share their unique cultures and experiences as well as form learning pairs for the study of common curriculum. Students from CIM visit their counterparts at Milken in a homestay arrangement during the fall semester. During Tiyulim week, Milken students visit Mexico, attend CIM, and stay in the homes of their Mexican counterparts. During the week in Mexico City, students visit the Museo de Antropologia, El Castillo de Chapultepec, the historical downtown area, Xochimilco, the Museo de Dolores Hidalgo, and the Pyramids of Teotihuacan.

Hiking This will be a 4-day exploration of the natural and cultural history of the Santa Monica Mountains. Students will spend each day hiking as well as visiting some of the interesting sites in and around the mountains such as: Griffith Park, Laurel Canyon, Topanga Canyon, Malibu Creek State Park, and Paramount Ranch. Students will also engage in trail maintenance as part of the course. The student will participate in discussion about the need for environmental preservation in urban environments and the Jewish value of Bal Tashchit.

Clay, Sculpture, Raku!This course will spend the week hand-building clay sculptures. This tiyul will use the human face as a foundation for considerations of how we “face” one another and how sculpture can reflect emotionality. We will visit at least one museum and take one trip to a sculpture display. We will attempt to capture both individual expression of characters as portrayed in two Torah readings.

LA! - Loving Art in Los Angeles!Join us for a fun filled week as we explore exclusive art collections and gardens and our urban environment!! 

We will visit, tour and create art at the famous Watts Towers designed by Simon Rodia. Another day we will visit the world renowned Huntington Gardens and Art galleries. Later in the week we will explore the current exhibition “Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists” at LACMA and the Contemporary Broad Museum. Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A., 1945-1980!Sometimes we seem to know less about the early years of post-World War II art in Los Angeles than we know about the Pleistocene Age mammals dredged up from the La Brea Tar Pits. In the last 30 years, L.A. pushed to the front ranks of international capitals for new art, a dizzying development widely documented, but what happened in the 30 years before that? Participants will experience portions of the unprecedented six-month series of exhibitions that detail an era in Los Angeles' art history that has been largely untold.

Quilting - Patterns for Life!This tiyul will explore the various ranges of quilting design and completion. Students will work with a variety of materials and designs to create quilts that will be auctioned for a charity of the tiyul’s choosing. There are many quilting designs, so students will work with Mrs. Fuller to explore various standard and some unique patterns. After producing a quilt for donation, each student will also produce a quilt for his/her own use, perhaps to take to college!

Surfing for Life!In this tiyul, the participants will explore the nomadic roots of Jewish identity as well as the Southern California surf and culture. We will travel to a different break every day and explore the location. We will draw on the experience by performing coastal clean-up, and learning about the local community. We will also reflect on the historical past of the Jewish people, and how the nomadic lifestyle was integral to the many historical displacements of the Jewish people. The four-day program will consist of four day-trips to 4 distinctly different breaks. This program is open to students with surf experience. Student participants are also expected to provide their own wetsuits and surfboards.

Building the Global Beit MidrashThis tiyul will build the foundations for a student-led Global Jewish Initiative envisioned by students in the Beit Midrash Fellowship program. Utilizing cutting edge social networking technology, we will design a platform for connecting international Jewish youth through dialogue, textual and cultural exchange, and collaborative, project-based tikkun olam projects. As part of this tiyul, we will construct a personal video narrative portraying the opportunities and challenges of the Los Angeles Jewish experience. Our group will travel around our vast city, video camera and microphone in hand, and have the opportunity to see, hear, and feel the diversity of the Jewish LA experience.Grades 10-12
