Tivoli Fest Opening Ceremonies will be held at the Danish Windmill at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 27. With the help of the local Color Guard, the Tivoli King and Queen will raise the Danish and American flags to the strains of the U.S. and Danish national anthems. Mayor Stan Jens, and Tivoli chairperson Dustin Petersen, will conduct the ceremonies.

The Mill to Mermaid Fun Run/Walk (‘Rod Hoegh Memorial Run’ in memory of the originator of this fun run) The 5K run will end in Kimballton at the Little Mermaid fountain. T-shirts will be given to the winners in each age division. Juice and M & M’s will also be available for all participants. All ages are welcome, so come and join in the fun whether you are walking, running or pushing a stroller! Registration is from 7:30-8 am at the former Danish Inn. The fee is $5.00 per person for ages 12 and older. Call Charley Merrill at 660-247-1367 with questions.

Tivoli Fest 2017 – Theme is #ÆBLESKIVER (and much more!)NEW - The inaugural Tivoli Fest World Æbleskiver Eating Championship is a new event in beautiful downtown Elk Horn, IA.  There will be two rounds of competition.  The first round will be the amateur round, in which a select number of amateurs will compete for 5 minutes or 25 Æbleskiver for registration fee of $30.00 which includes a t-shirt.

The second round will be the professional round.  This round will be comprised of 10-12 professional eaters on the Major League Eating national circuit, who will have 8 minutes to consume as many Æbleskiver as possible.  $4,000 total prize purse along with a record in the Guinness Book of World Records will be made Saturday, May 27.  An Æbleskiver is a Danish food that is basically a pancake ball, about 1.5 times the size of a golf ball. Pre-registration is required; rules and restrictions apply.

Representing Tivoli Fest as the 2017 Prince and Princess this year are Prince Ben Baggett (Brandon & Christina Baggett), age 9, and Princess Rylee Holaday (Samantha Holaday & Jeremy Linquist), age 7. Both are from Elk Horn and were chosen from 16 hopeful candidates. They were crowned at the Museum of Danish America on March 30.

Diego Garcia originally formed in 1997 & consisted of Mark Christensen, Polk City; Kevin Larsen, Carroll; Bill Daeges & Chris Will, both of Harlan.  Mark & Kevin were 1973 graduates of Elk Horn-Kimballton High School. The band played approximately 150 shows from 1997 through 2006. After 2006, the band played a few shows with a couple new members, then disbanded.  In 2015, the band decided to get back together again with the original 4 members.

The Tivoli Fest Fireworks Spectacular on Saturday night can be seen from the Windmill grounds. Fireworks have been a part of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, for over 150 years. The only exception was during WWII. Elk Horn is excited to carry on this tradition with their annual fireworks extravaganza by the Waymire Brothers.

Tour the historic 1848 Danish Windmill celebrating 41 years in America. This majestic mill was built in 1848 in Nørre Snede, Denmark, and brought to America in 1975. It was rebuilt in Elk Horn by community volunteers to honor the area’s strong Danish heritage. Be sure to visit the VikingHjem, Morning Star Chapel, and now the Ebeltoft Village. The Mill is under-going a large restoration project and part of Tivoli Fest proceeds will go to this project.

The Danish Windmill is hosting the 9th annual Tour de Tivoli Bike Ride Sunday, May 28. Registration for this 26 mile bike ride begins at 8 am on the Danish Windmill grounds, 4038 Main Street. Plenty of parking. Restrooms available inside the Windmill. After registering and before the ride begins, enjoy an Æbleskiver breakfast at the Elk Horn Fire Station by using your Free Meal Voucher or take a tour or shop at the Windmill. Don’t forget to use your Windmill coupon. The Tour ends back in Elk Horn. The $35 registration fee includes a T-shirt, refreshments, Æbleskiver meal, and Tivoli Fest entertainment. ($20 registration excludes the t-shirt)
