Iam so excited that you want to study Gods precepts for life with us in the book ofTitus! Were going to look at Pauls message to Titus about the churches on the

island of Crete. Well learn all about godly church leadership, the relationshipbetween sound doctrine and good works, and how you can live a godly life in anungodly world.

You couldnt have chosen to do a better thing, Beloved, than to sit at Jesus feet, listen-ing to His every word. Gods Word, the Bible, has the answer for every situation oflife. If you listen to what God is saying to the churchand to youyoull find your-self face-to-face with the Truth, and that Truth will surely bring transformation inyour life!

Inductive Study MethodTo study the Word of God inductively, you begin with the Bible itself as yourmain source of truth. Rather than seeking biblical insights from another personor book, you get into the Word of God yourself and begin by observing the text.

To observe the text, you slow down to carefully study what it says. This sounds

simple, but it takes time and discipline. The investment is more than worth it,because the truths you will discover are profound! To observe the text accuratelyand discover exactly what it says, you need to watch for what we call the 5 Wsand an Hwho, what, when, where, why and how.

In a book like Titus, its good to begin observing the text by discovering whowrote the letter and to whom it was written. Then you want to discover whatyou learn about them from the letter itself. You also want to watch for refer-ences to time so you can know when something happened. Where gives youthe geographical context. This is important in many books of the Bible and willgive you special insights as we study the book of Titus.

WHY is another important question to ask. When you ask whylike Why wasthis said or done? or Why should they, or I, do that?you learn so much. And finally, there is how, which gives you greater understanding and practicalinsights for application.

So as we study the book of Titus together, our careful observation will lead tointerpretationdiscovering what the text means.

The more you observe, the greater will be your understanding of Gods Word.Scripture is the best interpreter of Scripture, so you and I will be looking atother Scripture passages besides those in the book of Titus to get a clear under-standing of Gods message.

Where do observation and interpretation lead? They need to lead toapplication. Although the Bible is a very old book, it is Gods Word, whichgives us everything that we need to know in order to live a life pleasing to God.After weve observed the text and discovered what it means, we need to thinkand live accordingly. The result is a transformed lifethe more you and I are inthe Word of God and adjusting our thinking and behavior to its precepts for life, the more we will be changed into the likeness of Jesus Christ! He is the livingWord of God who became flesh, the Savior of the world, and our comingKing of kings!

    So Where Do You Begin?

At the end of this study guide you will find the book of Titus. Its taken fromwhat we believe to be one of the best and most accurate translations of theBible, the New American Standard. Use these Observation Worksheets to

mark key words and phrases as we study together; then you can transfer theminto your Bible later, if youd like to.

The first thing we recommend is to read through the book of Titus all at one sittingto get a general sense of this letter. Then begin your observation by readingthrough each chapter again, this time slowly, looking for who wrote Titus and towhom it was written. To discover the answers, get out some colored pencils andmark your Observation Worksheets in the back of this study guide like this:

Pick a color for the author (I use blue) and color every reference to him. Also mark (in the same color) all pronouns like I, me, my that refer to him.

Pick a different color for the recipientthe one to whom the letter was writ-ten (I use orange). Color every reference to him, including pronouns like you, your, yourselves and synonyms (words that substitute) for the recipient.

It would be good to do this marking as soon as you receive this booklet andbefore you listen to the next broadcast.

Whats Next? As you listen to each program on radio or the Internet, keep a pen or pencil

handy to write down or mark key words that Ill point out on the program.Youll find many of these key words on the back cover of this study guide,

with suggested colors to use in marking them so that you can spot themquickly in the text. Try to mark each key word in the same way throughoutthe text.

You can mark these key words ahead of time or after the program, which-ever is easier. You can also get the CD of the program and mark the keywords later while listening.

Also feel free to mark them your own way. There is nothing sacredabout the particular symbols I use. Do what is best for your own learningstyle. We all learn differently.

You will also find in this study some Greek words that will amplify yourunderstanding of Gods message to the church. The New Testament was origi-nally written in Koine Greekthe common language at that time. Periodicallythroughout these programs, I will give you the original Greek word and itsmeaning. Youll also find the Strongs number for each Greek word so youcan look it up later for even more study.

All the cross-references Ill mention in these programs are given to you underthe sections called Wheres That Verse? If you can, look them up with me.

You can write these in the margin of the text of the Observation Worksheets inthis study guide, or if you have a New Inductive Study Bible, there are widemargins where you can write them. I suggest you use a pencil, then writethem in ink later.

At the end of each day, think about what you learned and how you can applythose truths to your life. Write out these personal applications on the pages atthe end of this study guide entitled, My Commitment to the Truth Based OnWhat Ive Learned Today.

After you study the book of Titus you might want to continue to mark your

own Bible in the same way. I find that it helps me greatly to have my notes inmy Bible when I have my morning quiet time with God in the Word and inprayer.

If you do not have a New Inductive Study Bible, you might want to consider gettingone at your local Christian bookstore, or call us at 800-763-1990, or order it online atwww.preceptsforlife.com. It gives you instructions and helps you study each bookof the Bible inductively so that you can continue to discover truth for yourself.

How to Get the Greatest Benefit From This Study

Try to stay one lesson ahead of me. That way, youll be learning directly fromthe Word of God, and our broadcast time together will be like a discussiongroup as we reason together through the Scripture passage you have alreadyread and studied. Youll get much more out of our time together if youvedone this preparation than if you just join me for the radio or TV programcold.

Always begin your study with prayer. Ask God to lead you into all truth.

Read these chapters of Titus over and over. If you read them aloud, you willfind yourself automatically memorizing them. When you read somethingthree times in a row, on three separate occasions during the day, you usuallyend up memorizing it quickly.

Memorize a key verse or two for every topic covered in the book of Titus.God will bring these to your remembrance when you need them! And He willshow you the verses you need to memorize.

Make it a habit to pray about what you learn each day. Ask God to remindyou of these truths and to give you another person with whom you can sharethem. These two exercises will accomplish amazing things in your life.

Get the CDs of the program and listen to them when you get ready in themorning, do chores, or have family devotions. Listen with an open Bible anddiscuss what is taughthow it strikes you, what seems reasonable orunreasonable, what you can apply to your life. Get together with a friend, listen to the message, and discuss it. Spend some time in prayer for yourselfand for others.

When you receive one of our mailings from Precept Ministries International, read it to stay abreast of what God is doing around the world and pray withus for the needs we share with you. The island of Crete lies off the south coast of Greece. In the first century Christian churches

had been started in several cities (Titus 1:5). The fifth largest island in the Mediterranean

Sea, Crete is a long, narrow, and mountainous island, 170 miles long from East to West, but

not more than 35 miles wide at its widest point. Europe lies to the north, Asia to the east and

    Africa to the south.

Who was Titus?Youve probably heard of Timothy, one of the apostle Pauls trusted traveling companionsand protgs, but what do you know about Titus? Did he have a similar relationship to Paul?

Was he a Jew or Greek believer?

Read Galatians 2:15. Where did Paul take Titus in this passage, and what do you learn aboutthe quality and length of their relationship?

Next read Acts 15, one chapter before Paul met Timothy. This is the trip Paul referred to inGalatians. What was happening in Jerusalem at that time?

Second Corinthians 7:516 gives you more information about one of the special missions Paulgave Titus before sending him to Crete. Why was he sent to Corinth?

As you study Pauls letter to Titus, keep track of what youre learning about both the authorand the recipient of this letter on the chart in the back of this study guide.

    LESSON 1

    9

    A Knowledge of Truth

PrayerFather God, thank You for the example set by Paul and Titusmen who followed Youand obeyed Youand then saw You accomplish great things through them. How I longto be putty in Your hands, Lord, that You can mold and shape and prepare meto sendme where You want me to go to do Your work. Make me willing to listen and obey, evenif Your calling on my life leads me to difficult and challenging situations without much

glory or thanks. I want to be Your faithful bondservant, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen!

SYNOPSISYou are beginning an exciting adventure! If read and heeded, the

book of Titus can turn churches around, impact communities, andeventually remold our nation for God! It was written around thesame time as the book of 1 Timothy, about A.D. 62, when the earlyChurch was being challenged by the culture around it. This pow-erful epistle is bursting with instructions to help us live out ourfaith in an equally challenging world today! As you study it, bewatching for what you can learn about the knowledge of thetruth which is according to godliness. (Titus 1:1)

    QUESTIONS

    1. Look first at the references to the author of this letter that youalready marked (in blue). Who was he, and what do you learnabout him in this first chapter? Theres a page at the end of thisguide for you to write insights on.

    2. Look next at the references to the recipient that you marked (inorange). Who was he, and what do you learn about him in thisfirst chapter?

    3. Where was Titus when Paul wrote this letter? Mark that

geographical reference in your Observation Worksheets bydouble-underlining it in green.

    4. What in Titus 1:5 implies that Paul visited Crete at some point?

    5. What did Paul commission Titus to do in the cities of Crete?(Titus 1:5)

    6. What do you learn about the purpose of this letter from the firstchapter?

    Isaiah 59:14,15Romans 1:21-32

    The phrase set in order

    what remains or straight-

en out the things that areunfinished in Titus 1:5includes the Greek verb(#1930, [epidiorthose], Titus 1:5).

The root Greek noun, orthos, means straight as

in orthodontist (someonewho straightens teeth). Set

straight implies a priorcrooked condition. The

verb was picked up in earlyperiods by physicians for

setting bones. Back then, lacking the pain medica-tions we have today, bone

setting was a painful pro-cedure, especially if bones

had to be re-broken. Here,Paul asks Titus to straight-

en the churches in Creteby appointing elders who

meet the tough spiritual cri-teria he lays out in Titus

    1:6-16.

    A Bond-Servant of GodLESSON 2

    10

    SYNOPSIS

Are you willing to make yourself a slave of God for the sake ofthe Gospel? What does that mean in todays world? As we studythe book of Titus together, my goal is to help you discover truth foryourselfto come face-to-face with Gods precepts for life so youcan live as more than a conqueror, so you can know the victorythat overcomes the world! Whom are you serving today? Andwhat reputation do you have? If you were to select some words todescribe yourself, would you use bond-servant? Isnt it interest-ing that one of the greatest leaders in the early church describedhimself as a servant?

    QUESTIONS

    1. Mark every reference to God in Titus with a purple triangle over theword. Youre going to learn many truths about God in this study!

    2. Whats the significance of the facts that God cannot lie and that Hispromises are from long ages ago? (Titus 1:2). What hope does thatgive you?

    3. How does Paul describe the culture Titus was working in on theisland of Crete? (Titus 1:10-12 and 16)

    4. What does Paul call Titus in Titus 1:4?

    5. What do the following Scripture verses tell you about Titus and hisqualifications to lead the churches on Crete? Galatians 2:1-5;2 Corinthians 2:12-13; 8:16,23-24; 12:18; 2 Timothy 4:9-10.

    6. Check the chart on page 50 to see the sequence of events in Pauls lifeafter his conversion. Draw a line from Pauls First missionary jour-ney (just before the Apostolic Council at Jerusalem, when Paul firsttook Titus with him), to the year the book of Titus was written (seePaul goes to Crete). About how long had Paul and Titus been asso-

    ciated?

PrayerLord God, I want to be Your servant, to obey You in everything. I ask You to mark me asYour bond-servant for life. I want to stay on message and finish well, as Paul did. Iwant to be known as a godly follower of Jesus Christ who can be entrusted with kingdomresponsibilities. Rescue me from selfishness and worldliness. Help me to put Yourinterests far above my own. In Christs precious name, Amen.

Bond-servant (#1401, [doulos], Titus 1:1). Paul introduceshimself to Titus as a bond-servantof God, although he more frequent-ly refers to Christ as His master(Rom. 1:1; 2 Cor. 4:5; Gal. 1:10;Phil. 1:1). Doulos was the commonterm for slave. Slaves are not freefrom their masters rule, whetherthey serve willingly or not.Consequently, the New Testamentcontrasts doulos with freedom. Evenwhen the Son of Man sets a personfree from the slavery of sin (John

8:34,36), as Paul notes, the personbecomes enslaved to the Lord(Rom. 6:18,22).

Apostle (#652, [aposto-los]), from the Greek prepositionapo (from) and the verbstello (toset, place, appoint, send). Paul wasnot one of the original twelve apos-tles, but God called him to bring theGospel to the Gentiles (Acts 9:1-16),something he focused on particularlyafter the Jews rejected the mes-sage. First-century apostles whoreceived New Covenant revelationdirectly from God during the forma-tion of the biblical canon had quali-ties that are no longer valid today:first, they are defined as those whophysically saw Jesus after His resur-rection (1 Cor. 9:1), and secondly, they had unique signs to authenti-cate the revelation they receivedand preached (2 Cor. 12:12). Thiskind of apostle, responsible forauthoring New Testament books, isno longer with us.

    11

    A Lifestyle of Godliness

PrayerHoly Father, I know I dont measure up to Your standards. I want to live according toYour precepts rather than by the worlds standards, but I desperately need Your help todo it. Forgive me for the dirt in my life. Clean me up and turn me around so that I canlive for You as the holy person Youve called me to be. Please continue Your work in me,through the power of Your Holy Spirit, that I might be a purified disciple, zealous for

good works! In Christs name I pray, Amen.

    SYNOPSIS

Is there an energy crisis in the Church? As we study Titus, weregoing to see how important it is to live a holy lifestyle in todaysculture. We need to be salt and light in the midst of a corruptgeneration. Without the light of life radiating through us, oursociety will experience moral blackout! You and I need to modelevery word that comes out of the mouth of God to our cultureto stay the course to holiness!

    QUESTIONS

    1. Make a list of the qualifications for elders Paul gave Titus inTitus 1:6-9. In your Observation Worksheets number the nega-tive characteristics that should not mark a leader in the church. Then number the positive qualities they should exhibit.

    2. How does Paul describe rebellious men in Titus 1:10, 11?

    3. How does your life measure up to Gods qualifications for lead-ership?

    Elder (#4245,[presbuteros],Titus 1:5). The presbyter

has the office of oversight, supervision, superinten-

dence. The elder or pres-byter is charged with the

duty of seeing that ministryprocedures in the Church

are done justly and effi-ciently. The use of the term

in the Church is a carry-

    over from Judaismmem-bers of the Sanhedrin werecalled elders (Matt. 26:57;

Acts 24:1). If you carefullyobserve the connectionfor in Titus 1:7, youll see

that Paul identifies thepresbyter (elders, 1:5)

    with the overseer (#1985,, episcopate,bishop, 1:7).

    Above reproach (#410,

[anegkletos],Titus 1:6), from either thealpha privativea(n), not, orthe prepositionana, above, plus egkaleo, to call in,bring a charge against. Abishop must live an exem-plary life, one with no

    Are You Self-Willed?LESSON 6

    14

    SYNOPSIS

What does true godliness look like? The Bible is a plumb lineastandard to help us differentiate the qualities and lifestyles of thegodly and ungodly. The elders Paul asked Titus to appoint inCrete needed to be plumb lines, tooexamples and role models tothe early church. They were to be Gods stewards to take care ofthe affairs of His house, and their character was to be blameless.

    QUESTIONS

    1. How well do you handle anger in your family? On the job?At your church?

    2. How can you do a better job of handling angry feelings whenthey arise? Whose will do you need to submit to?

    3. In what areas of your life are you still selfish and self-willed?

    4. Review the positive qualities Paul tells Titus the leader should

have. List them here and grade yourself 1-10 for eachcharacteristic, 10 being the best.

    5. Read through the Observation Worksheets of Titus and markevery use of the word sensible in a distinctive way as a key, repeated word.

PrayerFather God, how unfit they are to govern a church who cannot govern themselves, governtheir turbulent and unruly passions! Help me to be meek, gentle, peace-loving, and

patient to everyone through the power of Your Holy Spirit working within me. Convictme when Im self-willed, quick-tempered, and contentious, and prune these sins out ofmy life. Make me more like Christ, Lord. Thats what Youve created me to be, and thatsthe desire of my heart. I love You, Lord, and I want to walk in Your ways! I pray thesethings in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

    Self-willed (#829, [authade], Titus 1:7), fromautos(self) andhedomai(to please),

from which we get our Englishword hedonisticthus, self-pleas-ing (only here and in 2 Peter 2:10).

Quick-tempered (#3711, [orgilon], Titus 1:7). This is justone word in Greek, not a com-pound with quick. In anotherplace, Paul says Be angry[orgizesthe, same root] and sinnot (Eph. 4:26), so some anger isjustified. Commentators justifiablyattach qualifiers like quick to get(angry) or prone to (anger).

    Pugnacious (#4131,

[plektes], Titus 1:7), fromplesso(to strike), so a striker (like pug orpugilist, which is slang for boxer). The pugnacious person is ready tostrike someone with words if notfists.

Sordid gain (#146, [auschrokerde], Titus 1:7), fromaischros (shameful, indecent) andkerdos (gain). This is a criterion forselecting both elders (here and in1 Tim. 3:3) and deacons (I Tim.3:8). There is legitimate gain asJesus teaches in the Parable of theTalents, but theres also dishonest

    gain.

    Sensible (#4998, [sophrona], Titus 1:8), fromsos(sound) andphren (mind).Soundmindedness means dis-creet, clear, sensible in judgment(Rom. 12:3; Tit. 2:6; 1Pet. 4:7).

Be Just and DevoutHolding Fast to the Faithful Word

    LESSON 7

    16

    SYNOPSIS

Do broken relationships stand in the way of your spiritual growth? As you read Titus 2, ask God to reveal people you are out offellowship with and what you can do to bring healing to therelationship.

    QUESTIONS

    1. Review Titus chapters 1 and 2 and your list of positive qualifi-

cations for elders. Compare it with the list of qualities for oldermen in Titus 2.

    2. Which qualities apply to your relationship with God and whichones to the way you relate to people?

    3. What relationships need repair?

    4. Go through Titus and look for every reference to the truth, theWord of God, and sound doctrine. Mark them the same waywith a small brown book (see back cover example).

    5. How much time in Gods Word do you think you need in orderto hold it fast?

PrayerDear Lord God, Im powerless to be a good person without Your help. I need Your HolySpirit working within me. I can't trust myself to be hospitable, loving, good and sensible, even in relationships with the people I love most! Help me to be devout in my relation toYou and just before others. In Christs holy name, Amen.

Just (#1342, [dikaios],Titus 1:8), righteous, someonewho conforms to Gods Law. JesusChrist alone was perfect. Petercalls him just in his first epistle(1 Peter 3:18), and Paul concludesthat through one act of righteous-ness [] there resultedthe justification [] of lifeto all men (Rom. 5:18). We aresaved through faith in the perfectrighteousness of Jesus atonementalone, but after were born again,God sanctifies us, making us morerighteous, more like Jesus(Rev. 22:11).

Devout (#3741, [hosion],Titus 1:8), pure, holy, unpolluted.Revelation 15:4 says God alone isholy () and Jesus is His mostperfect expression of holy ()humanity, separate and undefiled(Heb. 7:26). Leaders must bewholly committed to Gods service.

Holding Fast (#472, [antechomenon], a present partici-ple, Titus 1:9), fromanti(against)and echo (to have), thus to haveagainst (your body), hold close, cling to. We hold physical thingsthat are valuable to us close to ourbodies (like our children whentheres danger lurking). The objecthere, however, the faithful Word, lends itself more to being heldclose to the heart. Those who holdthe Word of God close to theirhearts speak it constantly andshow it in their lives.

    Dealing with Rebellious MenLESSON 8

    18

PrayerLord, keep me focused on Your truth. Strengthen me in the inner man through Your

precious and faithful Word so I will be able to recognize false teaching and reprove, refute, and exhort those around me with a loving, compassionate spirit. Purify me, Lord,

from all ungodly motives. I want to be Your faithful ambassadorto go where You wantme to go and do what You want me to do on this earth. In the name of Your beloved Son

    Jesus, Amen.

    SYNOPSIS

Do you have the courage to speak up to those who rebel againstthe authority of Gods Word? Would you sit by and watch peopletry to hurt members of your family with lies? The only sure wayto be prepared to refute false teachings effectively is to know theWord of God inside and out. We must hold fast to Gods preciousWord and be ready to speak a word whenever we have opportu-nity. God will hold our opponents accountable!

    QUESTIONS

    1. Review Titus 1:7-16, where Paul warns Titus about rebelliousmen. How does he describe them in Titus 1:10?

    2. Do you see these vices in our society today? In our churches?

    3. Mark deeds all the way through Titus with a brown circle andreferences to the Word of God including synonyms (e.g., doc-trine) with a brown book (see back cover).

    4. What does Paul instruct Titus to do about rebellious men and why?

    5. Read Titus 1:9. Whats the benefit of holding fast the faithfulWord?

    6. What false teachings are you aware of in your family, churchand/or community? Ask God to give you opportunities toconfront and refute them from His Word.

To exhort (#3870, [parakalein], Titus 1:9), to encour-age, comfort, frompara (alongside)andkaleo (to call). Both the HolySpirit and Jesus are calledParaclete, Helper and Advocaterespectively in John 14:26 and1 John 2:1. The advocate orencourager is one we can call toour side. In the context, leaders areavailable to side with and encour-age people against those whocontradict, using sound doctrine.

Sound (#5198, [hugiainouse], Titus 1:9, also in1:13; 2:1,2), healthy, as in Luke

5:31: It is not those who are well[] who need a physi-cian, but those who are sick. Wecan infer that those who contra-dict have sickening doctrines(teachings): Poison of a viper isunder their lips (Ps. 140:3, cf. Rom.3:13). Leaders differentiate teach-ings that heal us from those thatmake us sick.

Doctrine (#1319, [didaskalia], Titus 1:9), teaching, from which we get our English worddidactic (see Eph. 4:14; 1 Tim.4:1). Leaders appeal to healthytruth from the Word to refute those

who contradict. To refute (#1651, [elegchein], an infinitive, Titus 1:9,also in 1:13; 2:15). The ClassicGreek term carried ideas of shameand disgracenormal reactionswhen arguments are refuted, espe-cially publicly, as in Jesus teaching:[The world] hates Me because Itestify of it, that its deeds are evil,(John 7:7, cf. John 8:9 [KJV]).

    The Da Vinci CodeLESSON 9

    20

    SYNOPSIS

Paul warned Titus that the society he was living in was evil, thatrebellious people were likely to upset whole families, teachingthings they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain (Titus1:11). He instructed Titus to refute them from Gods Word. A recenchallenge to the Church from modern culture has come from thepopular novel The Da Vinci Code, a book that spent months on thetop of best-seller lists. If you listen closely to this program, youlllearn how to refute attacks on the Bible made in this popular mys-tery novel. This will help your friends, neighbors, and familymembers become sound in the faith (Titus 1:13).

    QUESTIONS

    1. Review the first chapter of Titus again, looking especially atverses 13 and 14. Why did Paul tell Titus to reprove those whoare teaching things they should not teach (Titus 1:11)?

    2. The most significant error in The Da Vinci Code is that the Bible isthe product of mennot the Word of God. What was Jesus

opinion in Matthew 4:4 and John 17:17? Whats yours?

    3. How could weak believers react to the books accusation that thechurch has covered up Jesus marrying Mary Magdalene andhaving children with her?

    4. Why are mixtures of fact and fiction deceptive and dangerous?

PrayerFather, make me wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove, so that I will calmly be able tosilence those who lead Your people astray. I know I need to spend more time in Your

powerful Word, Lord. I need to hold it fast in my heart to be the strong and valiantwarrior You want me to be in today's hostile world. Save me from apathy, laziness, andself-indulgence, Lord. Put Your words in my heart and on my lips so that I will be a

They Profess to Know God, But. . .LESSON 10

    22

    SYNOPSIS

Have you come across people who take everything you say andtwist it? They distort the truth every chance they get. You saidsomething in total innocence, and all of a sudden when theyrespond, you feel absolutely unclean because to them nothing ispure. These are liars and deceivers, people who are only out forthemselves, not concerned about other people but totally andcompletely selfish. It sounds like much of America today, doesntit? Lets see how Paul advised Titus to live in a similar cultureand still grow in godliness.

    QUESTIONS

    1. Make a list of everything you learn about Cretans in Titus 1:10-16.

    2. What contrast do you see in Titus 1:15-16 and Titus 2:1?What two groups of people are in the church at Crete?

    3. What qualities does Paul want Titus to encourage in older men?

PrayerDear Lord God, I want to be pure and undefiled, able to help others who are turningaway from Your truth. I confess that some of my deeds are unholy and disobedient, and Iknow You see them as detestable and worthless. I want my doctrine to be sound so myworks will truly glorify You. Help me to be self-controlled, dignified, and sensible, so thatall I say and do will represent You well. In Jesus precious name, I pray. Amen.

    LESSON 11A Crisis of Character

PrayerDear Lord God, I should be modeling for others how You want me to live, but I feelweighed down so often by inadequacies and trials. Assure me that You will give me the

power to reach out to help and mentor others, even in the midst of my pain and uncer-tainty. Thank You for the many things You have already taught me. Help me to be readyto teach people You bring into my life by word and by example so that we will all bemolded into the glorious image of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Do the work You need to do inmy life. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.

    SYNOPSIS

Our society is experiencing a crisis in morals, just as Cretessociety was when Paul wrote this letter! In the second chapter,Paul instructs Titus to teach groups of people godly character sothat the word of God will not be dishonored (Titus 2:5). As youreview chapter 2, watch for different categories of people men-tioned. Well focus on what Paul says to women today and howyou and I can change the character of ourselves, our family, andour culture.

    QUESTIONS

    1. What does Paul instruct Titus to teach in Titus 2:1?

    2. What should the character of older women should be (in Titus 2:3)?

    3. What are some of the responsibilities of older women in theChurch (Titus 2:3)?

    4. What character traits should older women teach younger ones?

    5. What have you learned from God that you can teach others?

    6. What do you need to know in order to mentor people, guidingthem to godliness?

    7. Why do you suppose Paul instructed Titus to have olderwomen teach younger women? Is this is good advice? Why?

CretansLying was wide-spread in Crete. In Titus

Epimenides, when he saysone of their own describes

them as dishonest, beastly, lazy, and gluttonousnot

very flattering! The Cretanreputation for dishonesty

contributed to the inventionof a new (Koine Greek) verb,

cretanize for lying, a fittingcontrast to the God who

cannot lie (apseudes, literally lie-less, Titus 1:2).The eternal life God

We can be set free from addictions in our lives! In Titus chapter2, Paul instructs his spiritual son, Titus, to teach sound doctrine. In verse 3 the emphasis is on older womenwhat Titus shouldteach them so that they will know their roles in the church andlive according to Gods Word. Its clear from this verse that someolder women in the church at Crete had problems with alcohol.Christians suffer from addictions today just as they did in the firstcentury. How can we attack and overcome them? The answer isin the Word of God.

    QUESTIONS

    1. List the qualities that Paul instructs older women to have intheir lives:

    2. What is malicious gossip? Do you hear it in your church?Doyou do it?

    3. What is the danger of addiction?

    4. Examine your life. Is there anything you are addicted to?

    1. Who is instructed to teach younger women?

    2. Why do you suppose this task was not given to Titus?

    3. What is a womans proper relationship to her husband?

    4. What is the impact on a husband and on others of a wife fulfill-ing her God-ordained role?

    5. What should be the primary focus of both older and youngerwomen? How does this compare with the way many womenlive today?

    6. How do your own priorities measure up?

    Ephesians 5:25-28Genesis 2:18Ephesians 4:11-16

Love is not a key repeatedword in Titus, but it is a key

concept throughoutScripture. Mark it with ared heart when you read it.

Love their husbands (#5362,[philandrous],Titus 2:4), literally, to behus-band-lovers. Phileo carriesthe connotation of affection,

    dearness, friendship.

Workers at home (#3626,[oikourgous], Titus2:5), literally house workers,

    probably corresponding to

    helper in Genesis 2:18.

Being subject (#5293,[hupotasso-menas], Titus 2:5), fromhupo(under) and tasso (to arrange,

    rank). The present participle

shows the need for the regular-

ity of this so the Word of God

will not be dishonored. In an

    absolute disagreement that is

not a matter of immorality, the

    married woman should subor-

dinate her will to that of her

    husband, just as Jesus did

with His Father: Not My will

    SYNOPSIS

Loving your children doesnt mean giving them everything theywant! What does it mean? If you were an older woman teachingyounger women how to love their children, what would you say?Titus 2 gives us lots of practical instruction for living out the Wordof God in the Church and the worlda world whose media dis-plays impotent, clueless parents and kids who rule. Let's seewhat God says about being good parents who truly love theirchildren.

    QUESTIONS

    1. Read Titus 2:4 again and note the priority children should havein a young woman's life.

    2. Why does it say young women should learn to love their chil-dren in a godly way?

    3. What do you learn from the first two cross-references underWheres That Verse? about instruction and discipline?

    4. If you have children, do you usually discipline them out of loveor anger?

    5. Read the promise to women in 1 Timothy 2:15. Does this giveyou hope? How important is your modeling of these qualitiesto your children?

PrayerDear Lord God, in so many ways I feel like I've "blown it" as a parent. Forgive me forbeing a poor example in the past and make me the kind of parent You want me to be.From this day forward, I want to live for You and serve You, and I want my family to bea living representative of Your love. Thank You for redeeming and restoring us. Teach mehow to discipline and love my children so they will continue in faith, love, and holinesswith self-restraint. I love You and thank You, Lord. I want to do a better job of the responsibilities You've given me.Thank You for Your teaching. I want to learn Your principles so I can pass them on toothers. In Jesus' holy name, Amen.

    SYNOPSIS

What a big responsibility! Older women should teach youngerwomen to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subjectto their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dis-honored (Titus 2:5). Does this mean women should not workoutside their homes? In our culture, weve bought into the myththat women are not fulfilled in domestic work. What does theBible say?

    QUESTIONS

    1. What are some of the married womans primary responsibili-ties, as described in Titus 2? If youre married, what can you doto make your home more Christ-honoringa place of peaceand order, a little bit of heaven on earth?

    2. Do you know an older woman you can learn from in creating ahome that truly honors Christ?

    3. Do Pauls instructions about younger women preclude theirwork outside their homes? What about the excellent womanin Proverbs 31? What can a Christian woman do to keep herpriorities straight and to decide how many hours a week towork?

    4. If youre a working mom, are you working because you need toor just to provide your family with more stuff and a biggerhome?

    5. What can single moms do to be good mothers and keepers oftheir homes, if they need to work?

    contrasts godly and worldly cos-

women to adorn [, kos-mein] themselves with proper

    clothing, modestly and discreetly,

not with braided hair and gold or

    pearls or costly garments, but

rather by means of good works, as

is proper for women making a

    claim to godliness (1 Timothy

    2:9,10). Attracting others to faith,

    2. Christ sets us free from the desires and slavish control of sin. Haveyou been released? Can you remember a time you asked God to for-give your sins and cleanse your heart, when you opened your life toChrist and accepted His sacrifice on the cross as atonement for yoursins? If you dont remember or youre not sure, you can pray thatprayer today and know for certain that you have passed from deathunto life.

    3. If you are sure your sins are forgiven and are depending on Him alonefor salvation, does your life reflect His glory? Do your deeds show theworld that your life has been radically transformed by Him?

    4. What areas of your life still need to change? Where has the HolySpirit pointed His finger of conviction through this study of His

    Word?

PrayerLord God Almighty, I throw myself into Your arms today. Arms that are open wide toreceive me! Arms that were nailed to a cross for me! Take me, mold me, make me morelike Your Son. Confirm to my heart today that I am your child, a member of Your eternal

family. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.

Washing (#3067, [loutrou], Titus 3:5), a basin forwashing, but here the function isemphasized since regeneration isthe internal cleansing of the heart.Paul uses this same sense inEphesians 5:26 when he speaks ofChrist sanctifying His Church bythe washing [loutro] of the water ofthe word.

Regeneration (#3824,[paliggennesias]Titus 3:5), frompalin (#3825),again, andgenesis (#1078), gen-eration, thus to generate again. The genitive case makes thephrase read the washing of [i.e.,which is] regeneration (an appo-sitional genitive). The new birth pro-duces a new creature (John 3-5;2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15).

Renewing (#342, [anakainosis], Titus 3:5), fromana(#303), again or above, andkainos(#2537), new. Theres no betterEnglish verb than renew. The Spiritof God makes us new people whenwere born again. Paul calls theSpirits product the new man inEphesians 2:15; 4:24; andColossians 3:10. The first two versescontainkainos, the last one, interestingly, contains both Greekwords: the new [neos] self who isbeing renewed [anakainoumenon]. . . . When youre born again, youhave a new nature; the Spirit makesyou a qualitatively new person.
