Page 42
There are several functional attributes that are
important for outdoor apparel
Breathability:
The degree of breathability depends on the quality of the fabric and how efficient the material is in transferring moisture from the inside of the garment to the outside. The Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR) is a measure for breathability. The amount of water which is transferred through a square meter in 24 hours is collected and measured in grams. The greater the amount of water collected the more breathable the material.
Coating:
The protective outer coating is a very thin film made out of synthetic material such as Polyurethane or Acrylic. The coating is applied to the outermost layer of material and increases protection against wind and rain. This also decreases the amount of wear and tear on the material.
Membrane:
A membrane is a thin flexible wall that separates fluids from gases. Microfine pores make it possible to keep liquids out but also allow water vapor to escape. In comparison to protective coatings, membranes are more breathable and durable.
Gore-tex is the most well-known brand and one of the highest in quality in the outdoor market.
Waterproof:
Generally, clothing may be called waterproof when it can bear a water column of 1200 to 1500 millimeters. The best jacket can withstand a water column of tens of meters. The test is performed by placing a tube on a piece of fabric and filling it with water until water droplets form on the other side.
• Softshells: 3,000-5,000 mm• Climastorm: 5,000 mm• Climaproof: 10,000 mm• Gore-tex: > 28,000 mm
Page 43
There are several stitching techniques to increase comfort
and functionality.
Stitching:
Even though stitching holes are very small, there is still room for water to enter. Unsealed seams are usually why the waterproof apparel leaks.
Heat Sealed Stitching:
In order to achieve an absolute waterproof function, seams and seam edges are heat-fused with sealing tape. Durable 1cm wide double-sided seams are used for the most critical seams.
Flatlock Stitching:
This unique stitching technique allows for a flat seam that avoids chafing and rubbing on the skin. Materials with different characteristics can be securely sewn together using this method.
Page 44
FORMOTION®, an innovative development by adidas, supports
the athlete’s muscular system and helps him to maintain the right
posture during performance. It improves comfort and enhances
performance by combining several different fabrics with different
properties.
All FORMOTION® garments are preshaped and include the
concept of optimized seam-placement for an improved fit and
comfort during all outdoor activities.

BodyMapping helps to analyze how the body regulates temperature
and sweat during exercise.
Through BodyMapping, adidas has identified different zones of heat and
moisture release based on gender, body type and weather conditions.
Using this information, we are able to design garments that meet the specific
environmental demands of each particular sport – from slack lining in a park
to high mountain trail running.
Previously, apparel layering was the only tool athletes had to help regulate
their temperature.
With BodyMapping, athletes can enjoy the combined benefits of layering –
weather protection, insulation and moisture wicking – in a single garment
with strategically placed fabrics and technologies, greatly reducing bulk and
weight.
By mapping the body’s critical heat and sweat zones using infrared cameras,
designers are able to place these technologies exactly where they are
needed to optimize the athlete’s body temperature. An athlete can actually
stay cooler in climacool® apparel than they can in bare skin.
Page 46
Page 47
Ventilation is the most efficient way to significantly cool an
athlete and ensure that he stays dry by taking moisture away from
the skin. BodyMapping studies and findings have helped the
adidas innovation team to take this to the next level through
FlowMapping!
It is a concept that helps adidas understand the athlete’s body
better so what our designers can place climacool® technology in
exactly the right place to keep you dryer, more comfortable and
performing at your peak. Using FlowMapping data, anatomically
configured inlets are placed in high-velocity areas to channel peak
airflow into the garment and over the athlete’s skin to provide
maximum cooling during intense athletic activity.
The result is a new generation of climacool® apparel that
significantly increases cooling without the addition of any extra
materials or technologies.

PrimaLoft® is light weight, breathable and offers superior water repellency, so you
remain dry, warm and comfortable even under the most extreme conditions. It uses
a microfiber structure to help the body retain warmth and conserve energy.
The PrimaLoft® insulation padding creates millions of air spaces suspended in
the microfiber mesh. These air spaces are so fine that water drops bead on the
surface. Even when forced into the PrimaLoft® core, water is repelled and not
absorbed by the microfiber structure, so PrimaLoft® keeps you warm even under
wet conditions.
KEY BENEFITS
• Warmest synthetic insulation material
• Warm even when wet
• Extremely compressible and light weight
• Fast drying properties and breathability make it ideal choice for outdoor sports
adidas Outdoor uses: PrimaLoft® Gold
PrimaLoft® Silver
PrimaLoft® Black
Page 66

Page 67
PrimaLoft® GOLD is the highest performing insulation on the market for
warmth, water resistance, softness and compressibility. PrimaLoft® GOLD is
an ultra-fine microfiber insulation that is as warm, soft and light weight, and is
warmer wet or dry than all other insulations.
Ultra-fine fibers form tiny air pockets that trap body heat and keep the cold
out. The result is immediate warmth without the bulk. PrimaLoft® GOLD
Microfibers are engineered for permanent water resistance and create tight
surface tension that resists moisture penetration, resulting in an insulation
that dries faster than goose down. Ultra-fine fibers mimic the compressibility
of goose down and are breathable, allowing moisture vapor to be transported
through the fibers and away from the skin.
KEY BENEFITS:
• Excellent Thermal Efficiency
• Superior Water Resistance
• Dries Faster than Down
• light weight and Breathable
• As Warm, Soft and Compressible as Down
• Wind Resistant
Page 68
PrimaLoft® SILVER is a premium performance insulation
engineered for superior warmth, water resistance, loft, softness
and compressibility. PrimaLoft® SILVER is a fine fiber insulation
that keeps the body warm, dry and comfortable even in extreme
conditions.
The proprietary fiber technology creates a unique matrix that
maximizes loft for superior insulating capacity. PrimaLoft®
SILVER is thermally efficient, water resistant, breathable and
compressible. The ultra fine fibers create a high performing
insulation without the bulk, perfect for use in outerwear.
KEY BENEFITS:
• Thermally efficient – wet or dry
• Superior water resistance
• Fast drying
• light weight & breathable
• Compressible
• Wind resistant
Page 69
PrimaLoft® BLACK has been established as a new performance
standard for continuous filament insulation by addressing the two
most significant downfalls of competitive continuous filament
insulation: compressibility and softness
Solid, soft and ultra fine denier filaments provide greater durability
than hollow filaments along with excellent compression and
recovery. (over 20% more compressible)
BLACK‘s thermal performance and comfort are the result of
excellent wet and dry clo-values, combined with next generation
manufacturing processes which result in a new performance
standard for quality and consistency.
It has a more consistent insulating structure virtually eliminates
cold spots, while promoting good breathability.
KEY BENEFITS:
• Warm – even when wet
• No cold spots – continuous filament insulation
• Softness
Page 70
Polartec® Alpha® is the latest evolution of synthetic insulation, offering a rare
combination of light weight warmth and true breathability in a “puffy” style garment.
Because Polartec® Alpha® insulation is highly durable and more stable than other
synthetic insulation products, more open-construction woven face and back fabrics can
be selected to create an air permeable package. This small amount of airflow rapidly
draws moisture away from the body and allows Polartec® Alpha® to be worn in a wider
range of activities compared to classic “vapor barrier” style insulation.
It offers a combination of unique performance attributes, vis a vis other synthetic
insulations, that are highly valued by an outdoor athlete looking for versatility. A
Polartec Alpha garment can be worn in both the "stop" and "go" phases of outdoor
activities. Current market synthetic insulations are not breathable enough to handle the
"go" phases of most backcountry pursuits. They are typically additional garments that
must be carried for use during static period. Polartec Alpha excels at providing comfort
for users on the move.
Key benefits
Provides warmth without the weight and bulk of traditional insulating
fabrics
Breathable to provide comfort in all activities: does not restrict the
movement of moisture vapor
Dries quickly to minimize heat loss
Insulates even when wet
Versatile; appropriate for a broad range of activities as a mid- or outer-
layer
Wind resistant
Machine washable
Page 71
Down is considered as one of the best insulating materials
among outdoor experts
The down of birds is a layer of fine feathers found under the tougher exterior
feathers.
KEY BENEFITS:
• It offers excellent thermal properties and has good lofting
characteristics. This means that the down traps small pockets of air
efficiently which provide a thermal barrier.
• It can be packed into a very small space – high compressibility, light
weight and high heat retention.
• Goose down has a higher warmth to weight ratio than other downs.
Page 72
Fill Power is the most frequently used measure of down quality and is
related to the insulating value of the down. It is measured by cubic inches
per ounce (in3/oz).
• A jacket made with high fill power is lighter and more compressible than
an equally warm one made with lower quality down.
• Down rated with a fillpower of 500-600 in3/oz is warm enough and light
enough for most conditions, and 700-800 in3/oz fill is used for light weight
and extremely cold-weather gear.
Page 73
Built-in warmth, without the weight.
INVISTA's THERMOLITE® fabric and insulation provides warmth
and comfort without weight. Because it is comfortable and light
weight, THERMOLITE® fabric and insulation allows freedom of
movement—making it the perfect layer. Its hollow-core fibers trap
in air for greater insulation for light, yet heavy-duty performance.
In a coat made with THERMOLITE® fabric and insulation, you will
stay warm and dry. Its larger surface area allows for fast
evaporation by sending moisture away from the skin to the
surface of the fabric, where it quickly evaporates.

Consumer demand: proper layering for comfort and
protection
• Use your body’s heat to stay warm and maintain the right
temperature
• Proper air ventilation while wicking away moisture
• Each layer should allow for breathability
1st layer: base layer - is closest to your skin and regulates
moisture
2nd layer: insulation/mid layer, keeps you warm
3rd layer: shell/protection layer, protects you from the elements
adidas outdoor offers 2l / 2.5l and 3l jackets
3rd layer Shell / Outer
2nd layerInsulation / Mid
1st layerBase
Page 78
Different layering options exist for varying outdoor activities
and weather conditions
Hardshells:
Hardshell jackets are most appropriate for backpacking trips and other outdoor activities where you need the maximum possible protection from the elements. Hardshells will reject rain or snow, while at the same time allowing perspiration out to keep you dry and comfortable.
adidas Outdoor offers:• Gore-tex• Climaproof
Softshells:
Softshell jackets offer the best freedom of movement as they are made with stretch fabrics that move with the body during exercise. Even though they are not quite as impenetrable as hard shell jackets, a good soft shell will keep you warm and protect you from precipitation while giving you maximum breathability.Softshells are designed for active, athletic pursuits like climbing or trail running.adidas Outdoor offers:• Softshell with membrane• Softshell without membrane
Fleece:
Fleece jackets are the standard in providing lightweight, warmth and breathability. They are perfect as a layering piece in colder conditions or as a simple jacket for cool temperatures.adidas Outdoor offers:• Windstopper fleece has become a stable
in outdoor jackets and layering systems. This style of fleece traps the heat inside the jacket during windy situations, but still allows breathability during aerobic activities
• Polartec fleece• Pontetorto tecnostretch
Page 79
Stretch fabric is a term that refers to synthetic fabrics which
stretch. Stretch fabrics are split into two categories: 2-way stretch
and 4-way stretch.
VS.
2-way stretch fabrics
stretch in one direction,
usually from selvedge to
selvedge (but can
stretch in other
directions depending on
the knit).
4-way stretch fabrics,
such as spandex,
stretches in both
directions, crosswise
and lengthwise.
Page 80
Pontetorto TECNOSTRETCH: Insulation with high tech look
The Tecnostretch line from Pontetorto perfectly satisfies the requirements for a clean
look and high elasticity while delivering top insulation performance.
An addition of spandex gives the fabric its stretch and special elasticity, while the
smooth outers provide the high tech look. All the while, the insulating properties of
Pontetorto fleece remain, because the plush inners (sheared and napped or unbrushed
with visible loops) trap a large volume of warming air inside.
It offers an ideal combination of fiber density and knitting technique to produce
incomparably light, soft, elastic, and yet still durable fabrics.
Gride structures offer a broad range of functional advantages such as low weight,
reduced pack size, and better ventilation than basic fleece.
Superior fleece fabrics that combine polyester and lycra.A great stretch and recovery, allows full body movement for all sport activities.
KEY BENEFITS:
Spandex provides high elasticity and stretch
Optimal warmth to weight performance
High tech, smooth outers
Durable

Empowers the wearer with more confidence, more self-belief and more focus in
their sport or activity.
Page 82
Pontetorto Merino TECNOWOOL: Performance meets nature in a sustainable way!
Tecnowool from Pontetorto makes worsted woolen fabrics highly functional and suitable
for use in active sportwear. In this product group, Pontetorto combines the positive
properties of synthetic fibers in the inside with the natural look and advantages of wool
on the outside. The result: Synthetic fibers quickly transport the moisture that is
produced through strenuous exercise to the outside where the wool stores it until it
gradually evaporates into the air. Sportsmen and women always stay dry!
Tecnowool Singlelayer: The fabrics in this group can be worn directly on the skin or as a
pullover. Because of the two-surface design, these fabrics have polyester insides that
“wick“ the perspiration quickly away from the skin, while the wool outers absorb this
moisture and allow it to evaporate. The sportsmen and women who wear it stay dry! The
wool outers are also the reason behind the many stylish, natural looks. The stylish ideas
are unlimited: knits with obvious mesh, fulled, plaited, with needle felt look, striped or in
a Norwegian pattern, in vari-color or even neon colors. The same is true for the variety of
backings - the range extends from smooth and fine, functional to furry or velour weaves.
KEY BENEFITS:
soft on the skin
retains heat – while remaining breathable
absorbs moisture in order to keep you dry
100% recycled
Page 83
Polartec® Power Dry® fabrics are designed to keep your skin dry when you
sweat. All fabrics in this series feature a patented bi-component knit
construction that uses different yarns on either side of the fabric. This
creates two different surfaces: one that is optimized to move moisture away
from the skin, the other to dry quickly.
The fabric is highly breathable and does not restrict the movement of
moisture vapor.
"Touch points" on the fabric inner surface draw moisture. Sweat is wicked off
the skin to the outside of the fabric where it spreads rapidly for evaporation.
Polartec® Power Dry® fabrics move at least 30% more moisture away from
the skin than single-component fabrics.
When the sweat reaches the outside of the fabric, it spreads out on the outer
surface of the fabric, enabling it to dry at least 2 times faster than cotton.
Key benefits
Superior wicking action
Keeps your skin dry when you sweat
Highly breathable
Dries quickly
Comfortable next-to-skin
Machine washable
Page 84
Polartec® Thermal Pro® High Loft fabrics take insulation to a new level by
maximizing warmth without added weight, compressibility and breathability.
They are the most technically advanced of the Polartec® insulation fabrics,
achieving the utmost versatility and performance under extreme conditions.
This level of performance is critical when all you have is what you can carry.
The key to this fabric’s performance is in its unique patented construction. An
open-mesh stitch promotes compressibility, increases airflow and minimizes
weight. Low density, high loft pile face and back minimizes weight but
increases warmth and compressibility. The fabric maintains its loft wear after
wear, for enduring warmth. Fabrics are at least 30% warmer per weight than
standard fleece or the most common competitive “high loft” offering.
Key benefits
Provides warmth without the weight and bulk of traditional
insulating fabrics. Highest warmth to weight ratios of any Polartec®
fabric.
Highly breathable to provide comfort in all activities: does not
restrict the movement of moisture vapor.
Lightens your load and takes up less space in your pack than
standard fleece fabrics.
Dries quickly to minimize heat loss.
Versatile; appropriate for a broad range of activities.
Machine washable.

(50+ SPF) without adding steps and costs for additional finishes. No harsh chemicals
or topical treatments to irritate skin. 37.5® rapidly moves perspiration over an
enormous surface area (created by the pores of the activated carbon), accelerating
evaporation similar to how your body cools itself.
adidas Outdoor uses:
Knitted fabrics: Various knits using 37.5 Polyester (sourced through Tong
Siang/Men Chuen/New Wide) knits in different constructions and containing
different amounts of 37.5 Polyester yarn particles on the yarn create bigger surface
= better moisture management. Also provide UV-protection and enhance odor
management
KEY BENEFITS:
Evaporative cooling
Odor management
UV Protection

One of the most popular and talked about FIBERS around in the outdoor
industry is not a lab made synthetic, but a simple natural FIBER, taken
from Merino sheep- Merino Wool.
Although ‘fluffy’ in appearance, the FIBERS of a merino wool product are
lighter than any other sheep’s wool, reducing the scratchy, heavy sensation
that many people associate with a thick woolen sweater, which is why merino
is used in next to the skin clothing such as baselayers, socks, and
underwear.
Able to retain and diffuse heat as needed, merino works in much the same
way as a fleece or a similar synthetic. Merino Wool Can Be Used:
By people with sensitive skin.
By people during active wear
For general wear
For insulation in cold weather
For comfort in items such as socks
KEY BENEFITS:
Merino Wool is a natural FIBER so it is soft on the skin.
Merino Wool is a warm FIBER so it retains heat – while remaining
breathable.
Merino wool stretches bit keeps its shape- making it ideal during
activity or for travelling
Merino Wool absorbs moisture in order to keep you dry

Dri-release®: natural touch with high performance
Optimer's Dri-release®, uses a patented blend of natural and
synthetic fibers. The natural fibers absorb moisture pulling it off
the skin and into the fabric. Synthetic fibers repel moisture, forcing
it through to the surface of the garment where it evaporates
quickly as airflow moves across the fabric.
adidas Outdoor offers:
• Dri-release Cotton (80 % PES / 14 % CO / 6 % EL) including
freshguard, an environmentally friendly odor neutralizer
• Dri-release Wool (88 % PES / 12 % Merino Wool)
KEY BENEFITS:
• Dries 4x faster than regular cotton
• Pulls perspiration away from skin
• Feels like cotton
• Antimicrobial

Gore-tex® is the market leader in breathable waterproof
technologyThe micro porous structure of the Gore-tex® membrane makes Gore-tex®
fabrics completely waterproof. Each microscopic pore is about 20,000 times
smaller than a drop of water, which means no external moisture - from rain to
snow to that puddle you just stepped in - can penetrate the membrane. To
keep you comfortable and protected in the windiest conditions, the Gore-
tex® membrane provides an impenetrable wind shield. Your product
breathes, but wind stays out. The pores in the Gore-tex® membrane are 700
times bigger than a water vapor molecule, so perspiration can easily
evaporate and you can stay dry from the inside out.
Page 93
Garments engineered with Gore-tex® product technology offer a unique
solution for specific activities and climate conditions to individually fit
consumer needs. Each product class consists of a distinct laminate package
including core technologies such as membranes, production processes and
textile choices.
2 Layer construction:Ideal for a wide range of outdoor activities, with this construction a Gore-tex® membrane is bonded to the outer fabric only. The benefit: the separate lining inside improves wearing comfort and versatility. This construction can be combined with insulation, keeping the wearer dry and warm.
