This research project has as a goal to develop a software for real time (online) evaluation of the learning process, based on techniques of Artificial Intelligence, which is ableto analyze the cognitive state of the student and preset a qualitative and quantitative result of their learning level.

10

► ORGANIZATION OF THE SOFTWARE

The software will be composed by the following modules:

Knowledge Module: it includes all subjects or content, bibliography and glossary ready to use by the selected discipline;

Teaching Module: this module constitutes the most important module of the virtual professor (software), because it contacts the student directly through interface, in order to furnish him the resources available in the Knowledge Module, according to the course, selected discipline and the Intelligent Module;

► ORGANIZATION OF THE SOFTWARE (continued)

Intelligent Module: it acts into the Teaching Module to adjust the contents to be furnished to the student, based on data feedback from Student Mirror Module;

Student Mirror Module: it stores all data obtained from evaluationsand the previous defined psychological frames.These data will be furnished for processinginto the Intelligent Module, and as a resultwe could identify the student learning pattern.

THE ADAPTIVE e-LEARNING SYSTEM

The whole system is composed of two parts: by one software that will run on the host computer (the server) and the student in the other side accessing the remote computer with the aims of acquiring some specialized knowledge.

THE ADAPTIVE e-LEARNING SYSTEM (Continued)

As you can see on the figure below, the principal contribution of the research project is the software development that will incorporate some intelligent characteristics (Intelligent Module), in order to adapt to the student learning process. Here, I use the understanding that adaptation is one of the most important intelligent characteristic. This justifies the name Intelligent Module.

WHAT MEANS TO ADAPT ?

It means that the Intelligent Module will guess the cognitive state of each student, adapting its learning process to overcome some presenteddifficulty or repeat related knowledge already known.

In other words, it means that we can keep up with the student’s cognitivestate using his test results (performance) and the psychological profile. These student characteristics will be used as feedback in to the Intelligent Module.

As the Intelligent Module processing result, an output then will furnish thestudent learning pattern, what should be basic, intermediate, or advanced. According to this learning pattern, the Teaching Module will adjust the Knowledge Module, in a way to select the contents what will be transmitted.

HOW TO GET SOFTWARE INTELLIGENCE ?

The intelligent characteristics will be achieved using either a data mine system based on Artificial Neural Networks or an Expert Systems.

We can use also an Artificial Neural Network plus an Expert System. The former makes the cognitive state generalization and the second, the localImprovement; both could be used to take the best choice for teaching.

Currently, I have realized that a previous study should be carried out on these two techniques in order to define what’s the best one that could give good results to adapting the teaching for each student learning pattern, based on the available feedback obtained through applying tests and outlining psychological profiles.

The Teaching Module’s one objective is adjusting to the learning patterns, what could be settled on Basic, Intermediate or Advanced learning levels.

The answer is inside the Knowledge Module.

There will be storage of all contents, evaluations and pedagogical procedures, that can be requested by the Teaching Module, in order to get the best student learning experience.

The great advantage of the Adaptive e-Learning System proposed is its modularity. This allows its increasing and/or permanent actualization, without needs of reworking.
