BALLSTON SPA —County officials are tryingto develop a policy for allowing for-profit compa-nies to use the county’staxpayer-funded 911 dis-patch system.
The discussionsstemmed from the town of Greenfield’s March deci-sion to award a $50,000contract to Cohoes-basedEmpire Ambulance to pro-vide emergency serviceswith the town.
The for-profit company is slated to replace thenonprofit Saratoga Emer-gency Medical Services, which in 2011 announcedplans to fold in the wake of financial difficulties thatmany local emergency service providers are cur-rently experiencing.
The contract took effectApril 1, but Empire Ambu-lance hasn’t been able torespond to calls in Green-field because it’s currently not signed on to the coun-ty’s 911 dispatch system. The county used a $1.8 mil-lion state grant to upgradethe dispatch center at theSaratoga County Sheriff’sOffice in 2007, which madethe facility the primary dis-patch center for county fire, police and ambulancecalls.

are beyond imagination. A century later, this
maritime tragedy stillranks among the great-est disasters of all time,a product of numeroushuman errors andincredibly bad fortune.
