The discussions stemmed from the town of Greenfield’s March deci- sion to award a $50,000 contract to Cohoes-based Empire Ambulance to pro- vide emergency services with the town. The for-profit company is slated to replace the nonprofit Saratoga Emer- gency Medical Services, which in 2011 announced plans to fold in the wake of financial difficulties that many local emergency  service providers are cur- rently experiencing. The contract took effect April 1, but Empire Ambu- lance hasn’t been able to respond to calls in Green- field because it’s currently not signed on to the coun- ty’s 911 dispatch system. The county used a $1.8 mil- lion state grant to upgrade the dispatch center at the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office in 2007, which made the facility the primary dis- patch center for county  fire, police and ambulance calls.
