Waiakea Intermediate School Home of the Titans
Titan News ’
Aloha Titan Families,
Quarter 1 seemed to go by so quickly and the first Report Card of the Year will be going home
soon. Report Cards will go home Monday October 22nd. Please check with your child, sign and
return to Homeroom teacher the acknowledgment form.
Committee Report: Waiakea Intermediate’s PBIS Committee started Student of the Month in
September where each Homeroom selects one student who best represents the Character Value
of the month. Each month we will recognize a different value. The Character Traits are listed in
our Behavior Matrix. Take a few minutes to review the Matrix of expected behaviors with your
child. It will help us build our home/school relationship. These expected behaviors communicate
to the entire school community how we can work together to create a safe and orderly
environment. Congratulations to our Titans who earned “Character” Student of the Month.
Principal Talk Story Events
We work on instruction all the time but more attention needs to be given to building better and
stronger relationships. As a school we focus on developing an environment that is supportive of
young adolescents. We do this by continually learning about their needs and creating learning
opportunities that meet those needs both academically and socially. I would like to hear from
our families regarding what they feel the school could provide to support this unique age group.
Our School Community Council will be sponsoring two Principal Talk Story events, November
1st and February 28th in the Library starting at 5:00. These events are being offered to give
families an opportunity to meet with the Administration and share in person their thoughts.
Please join us for some refreshments and discussion around “What do our students need and
what can we do to support them?” I look forward to this opportunity to learn from our parents
and community.

Parent Conferences are coming up soon, November 13-20. School will be dismissed at 1:15
daily during Parent Conferences. Notices will be going home by Tuesday, October 23rd. Check
with your child. If they have Form B, conferences are optional but offered. If they have Form A,
conferences are strongly recommended. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s
Homeroom Teacher. STAR Reading and Math Reports are being sent home with your
conference letters. A good way to engage your child in conversation about school is to review
the STAR Reports with them. Students will be setting goals regarding STAR Reading and Math
assessments in Advisory.
SBG Event – Parents please assist your child in following our Halloween Costume Dress Code.
Students who are not following the dress code of the day will be asked to call home for a change
of clothes. Refusal to change and/or defiant behavior may result in disciplinary consequences.
Thank you for your assistance. Let’s work together to keep the day fun!
Halloween Dress UP – please keep in mind that there is a dress code for Halloween Costumes.
Please help us keep this a positive activity by sending your child to school with a costume that
follows guidelines found on pg. 8 of the Student Agenda Planner.

UPLINK Newspaper Club
By: Lujan-Nevaeh Purdy, Kalia Kahapea, and
Meleana Gracida
Greetings from the UPLINK Newscast Club. Today
our number one priority is to explain the
activities that we pursue in newspaper.
In the newsroom we are on the hunt for stories
and interesting activities going on in UPLINK.
We interview other club leaders and observe
what they are doing.
Another thing we do is go to other rooms, so we
are able to talk with students to get their
perspective of their club. We had to learn how to
conduct interviews, so we can extract interesting
sound bites for our broadcasts.
We are learning to use technology as a main
source. For instance, we are using Ipads to
record students being interviewed by our team of
journalist. We will also be working on editing
those video clips and putting together a
podcast/news report on big UPLINK News.
Newspaper club meets once a week. Please be
on the lookout for a next big breaking news story.
Tennis Day Fun
By: Priscilla Mow, Gr.6; UPLINK Newspaper Club
On September 20, 2018 we had Coach Roman come from Oahu to teach
our P.E. class about tennis. He is from the USTA. He brought with him
loads of equipment and games. We did many activities such as Lobster
and Pearl, Around the World, four-square, a musical chairs type of game
with racquets and others. We rotated through the different stations
where we learned basic to medium level tennis skills. The Lobster and
Pearl station was a simple enough activity where one partner tosses a
ball over the tape and the other person needed to catch it between two
tennis racquets. I believe the intention of this activity was to practice the
low to high movement of the racquet as well as receiving the ball in the
correct spot of the racquet. Another fun activity was Around the World.
You could either catch and trap the ball with your hand and toss it over
the net or hit it with the racquet. After getting the ball over the net you
had to run to the other side of the court and get in line there. This station
taught me ball placement and angles as well as court movement and
striking of the ball. This station really made me tired because I had to
keep moving.
My favorite activity was the four-square. It is just like the four-square
we play in class but with a tennis ball and racquet. I really liked this
because I had some basic understanding of the concept and we got to
compete with my group members. I want to play this some more in our
next P.E. class.
I learned some basic skills like bouncing he ball with the racquet, where
to him the ball on the racquet, how to use angles to move my opponent
around and the low to high trajectory of the racquet. I got better at
controlling the ball when hitting it because the ball did not go all over
the place. I think the ball may have been less bouncy than the other balls
I have played with but that made it easier and more enjoyable. I really
appreciated having a tennis expert come to teach us some tennis skills
and fun activities. My teacher told me this was the first time he had
come to our school so we were really lucky to have him. I also heard
that he donated a lot of equipment for us to continue to use and practice
with. I look forward to continuing to build my tennis skills and possibly
play it into the future.
