Tissue engineering: Dental applications Prevention from caries by Peptide-based hydrogel

Combining the hydrogel with different compounds and using it as a platform.

A tray would be important or simply transforming the hydrogel into toothpaste.Furthermore, Fluoride should be mixed with the gel.

Delivers protective compounds locally to fight against teeth corrosion and caries perseverance.

Fluoride usage in Belgium exceeds 85% of the total population (So demanded).

Existing applications: Fluoride gel.Examples of existing products:o Oral-B® Minute-Foam® 1.23% APF Topical Fluoride poured in a

tray and costs >$35o Oral-B®Neutra-Foam®2.0% Neutral Sodium Fluoride poured in a

tray and costs >$35

>25% consume drinks with high sugar level > 30% consume alcohol

>85% consume candies.

15% have had difficulty chewing, biting and eating food because of

caries

How big is the market According to European polls:

-7% felt embarrassed because of the appearance of their teeth-4% of Europeans have avoided a conversation or reduced their participation in social because of their teeth colours.-In Belgium, More than 20% consumes tobacco regularly and on daily basis. The American Association of Orthodontists also found that nearly 90% of patients requested tooth whitening.

Examples of existing products:o Opalescence is one of the best in teeth whitening. (400 Euro for the kit includes 4 syringes of 1,2mL, a toothpaste and a tray.)o Whiter Image: US$ 55 for the deluxe kit includes 2 syringes of 1,2mL and a tray (or not it depends)

Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide should be added to the gel. Also, The tray, that contains the Hydrogel, should be placed on the patient’s teeth for more or less 8 hours (during the night).

Mixing the Hydrogel with other elements for teeth bleaching applications.

Turn degraded teeth into whiter ones by applying the hydrogel locally using a tray.

Carries and distributes antibiotics (or other combinations) locally to cope with gum bleeding, periodontal pockets and other irritating concerns.

Chlorhexidine, doxycycline andminocycline can be added to the hydrogel depending on the issue that should be treated.

Joining antibacterial elements with the hydrogel to tackle gum issues.

According to the Department of Health studies: -16% have sore gums or irritation.-Around 50% of adults have early stage of gum diseases (64 millionIn the USA).-Half of adults have gum pockets and 20% of those are 15-18 years old.-8 in 100 adults were found to have severe gum pockets that, eventually, need surgery.

Existing applications for gum treatments: o Perio-cleaning at the dentist is more than US$ 200.o G.U.M Perio-Balance Oral Probiotic (30 lozenges £14.51)o Boots Co-Enzyme Q10 (30 capsules, £4.99) o Colgate Peroxyl Oral Rinse (300ml, £3.58)o Corsodyl Spray (60ml, £5.15)o Gengigel Gel (20ml, £6.99)
