trends forecast - by mark woodmanWe strive forward as humans, to care for one another, and for ourselves. the directions we take are many, but everyone is intertwined with everyone else, and to that end, how we act, what drives us, and how we cope are increasingly important.
Not only do we have to feel uplifted about our endeavors, we have to feel that way about the spaces with which we are surrounded and the products they contain. Pattern, texture and color have to help the narrative so that we feel at one with the world, our passions, and our efforts to recharge, as we take on the world for the good of all.
an evolving trend direction, it revels in the human spirit that is ”ihuman.” it is a story of celebration and caring, and embracing the human connection to technology.
“ihuman” celebrates the essence of people helping one another. concern for others, with the sharing of stories, woes, and the resolving of issues, creates camaraderie during natural disasters and states of emergency. it triggers assistance on a global level and, with each of us poised to offer a helping hand to those in need, brings us closer together. Weather crises in asia are a prime example of people helping people in kind, concerned ways. it redefines the word “humankind” to “human—kind.”
overall, that generosity is all about elevating and being helpful. From the “sharing Economy” to non-profits, power and empowerment makes each person a beacon for those around him or her. it makes being human that much deeper and creates a bond the blends everyone together.
blending is important as society melds traits from everyone; the nurturing power of womankind, added to perseverance, takes humanity to another level. indeed, “womanity” is an important element in the “ihuman” story as it balances gender roles to be, simply, human. there are no tasks for men or women, just tasks that need to be done by the most qualified person.
of course, simply being human may not be enough, technology is rapidly moving from desktop to wearable to embedded, and can make us better able to cope with our daily lives and to assist others. We monitor our health progress with wristbands and mobile devices and have already improved our hearing with cochlear implants. self-driving cars will whisk us to our destinations and eyeglass cameras will amend our view, keep us in touch and upload everything we see. Prosthetics add ease to everyday functions and may soon become enhancements beyond assisting to overcome personal injury. the bionic-cyber human is at our doorstep and we are it.
soft touch surfaces will free us from the endless hard-tapping of our personal devices and provide a quiet moment. Finishes will be easy on the eye as soft matte and subtle satin finishes allow a break from light and high sheen levels. it can be high-tech, but also needs a comfort-touch.
From mental power to physical power, the story of “ihuman’ brings us all together to help one another and grow together.

kiss
“Kiss” is very much a story of red, the hue and idea behind passionate and thought-provoking design and life-styles.
red wears many guises and begins by representing the blood coursing through our veins, offering life, energy and excitement. red is that color to stimulate our appetites, flush our cheeks and engage our minds. From spiced cuisines and fine wine, to the red of a protest poster, to the kiss from a loved one, it is the go-to hue for making a statement.
shaking off its “classic” vibe, red is appearing in multiple values and can be seen as bold or subtle, as well as bright or deep. as a color of passion, it represents multiple stories within a story. on one side, it connotes the human spirit of solidarity and striving forward for what is right. on the other side, it is the passion that drives our desires. its ability to stimulate the senses offers a colorful story that encompasses all the heart and mind has to offer.
“Kiss” is also about an embrace, holding something you cherish or hold true. curating our lives and cherishing memories add dimensions that humanize the story. We strive, we fight, and in the end, we love. We love our causes, our families and friends. surfaces, whether in fashion or home, will sport quilting and tufting to emphasize this enveloping nature and stabilizes the color with soft texture.
bold statements must be balanced, though, and the strength of the color is contrasted with clear, sky blue, rich black, subtle tan and natural metallics. the hues are natural, without being mundane, and are both grounded yet allow the spirit to soar.
as a story of contrasts, it is occasionally subtle, often provoking, but is driving forward to embrace life and all of its passionate tales.
emerging surfaces:• High polish excites
• Quilted looks appear with inlay and carved designs
• Matte finishes offer respite from the energy
words:• Provocative • Passionate
• Powerful • Engaging
colors:• Various reds, from sharp red to
deep wine that speak of healthy, voluptuous inspirations.
• Balancing colors of sky blue, deep black and warm grey, are grounding and rich.
• Gold metallic is softened to champagne tones and silver is polished to connote family heirlooms.

colors:• The colors of the rising, and setting
sun offer deep orange, gold, and red.
• Citrus peach and orange offer colors of health and vitality.
• Teal, green and cobalt blue offer a cooling side to the palette, reminiscent of nature and its bounty.
with so much going on, we need an escape. despite support from others, passionate causes, and healthier living, we sometimes just feel the need to get away. or at least think we have.
take an island sojourn with “archipelago.” the island life we desire is verdant, lush and offers all of nature’s beauty. this story, with roots in a classic island escape, is also a story of modern architectural projects to extend our living/working and playing possibilities.
self-sufficient, manufactured strings of islands are planned off the coastlines around the world, and sometimes, in the clouds. these archipelagos of modern living offer sustainable areas in which to live, while fulfilling the desire for an island life. directly over land, suspended communities will allow living close to the water without being swept away by it, and cleverly planned open areas allow light passage and maintain the eco-balance. the ability to extend our living spaces with minimal disturbance to the planet is key to these new concepts for living.
Forward thinking and technologically advanced, though they are, these architectural projects still tug at our desire for “getting away from it all.” designs will embrace familiar elements from tropical to Polynesian, and the “aloha” culture of postwar hawai’i. the emerging patterns, colors and textures celebrate everything from aloha shirts to woven woods. in addition, botanicals and citrus fruits will raise their status, again, adding the twist of fresh, healthy eating.
the fashion, art, and entertainment worlds are sharing important muses and influences for this escapist story. Nail lacquer to fashion prints play up tropical color and pattern, and blend with inspirations from gauguin’s art from Polynesia, Elvis Presley’s hawai’i years and the sassy style of carmen miranda. all are examples of icons that embodied the atmosphere of the tropics. Lush, natural and lively!
“archipelago” islands, though not physically connected, carry a bond of nature and, often, culture. they may yet be escapes in our minds, but, in the future, will be created for everyday life.
