Project details

The project that we are about to deal with is an extension of an existing five star hotel in Kolkata.

This 5 star hotel on the bypass defines a certain part of the city’s skyline, a landmark for those travelling

through the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.

This extension of the opulent structure was being built by our client. The finished structure is supposed to rise to a height of 140mm and will have 27 storeys along with 2 basements.

The Challenge

The main challenge and concern was the uncertainty over the availability of 36/40mm

material in Kolkata, as this material was absolutely critical to the progress of this

project.

Due to the unavailability of these sections, a part of the design ran the risk of replacement which perhaps would have forced replacement of 40mm with 36mm

and more commonly 36/40mm with 32mm.

These specifications are extremely precise and substituting them with similar length rebars would

pose various problems. It was noted that replacement with lower diameter could result in

many negatives.

The quantum of steel usage would increase to ensure same load-bearing capacity and hence, cement consumption would also

increase proportionately.

An increased congestion of the rebar meshes would cause non-uniform flow of the cement-mix and might

have resulted in improper filling of the cavity. In a commercial structure, when the diameter of the vertical

support increases, it reduces the carpet area.

Also with the designs maintained, lack of 36/40mm material would have resulted in an indefinite delay of the

project thus leading to higher costs.

availability of the required sections at the Readybuild yards, based on the information provided by the

project requirement sites.

This resulted in ensuring availability of specified sections onsite and progress of the projects without risk of material
