Tired of taking a language course in a

classroom? Let’s go outside!

ASU’s Japan Summer Study Abroad Program will allow students to have

fun while learning Japanese amongst the local citizens in the historic

city of Kyoto. All courses will be integrated with Japanese culture and

history, which will be enhanced by conversations and excursions with

students from the host campus—Ryokoku University.

Course Information

*Note* All students are required to take at least 6 credits

JPAN 1001: Elementary Japanese I

An oral approach to the language, with fundamentals of grammar and emphasis on

conversation, supplemented by oral-aural drills in the language laboratory.

Language learning will be enhanced by direct contact with native Japanese

speakers during the 4 weeks in Japan.

JPAN 1002: Elementary Japanese II

A continuation of Japanese 1001 that further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing

skills in Japanese while including cultural, historical, and literary components. Prerequisite:

Japanese 1001

MUSC 1100: Music Appreciation

General education course for non-music majors. Study of the basic materials of

music and a survey of important examples of music literature, style periods, and

representative composers from the sixth century to the present day. Emphasizes

techniques for listening analytically and critically.

MUSC 3125: History of Jazz (Performing the Music)

The study of jazz from its beginning African heritage with emphasis on jazz development and

such influences as work songs, ragtime, Dixieland, blues, and popular music. Since music is

considered an international language, and Jazz (in particular) and other African-American

music have many different cultural influence (including Japanese), this course will offer a

unique opportunity to learn and implement performance techniques in an international

setting. Prerequisite: MUSC 2022
