“Broadlyspeaking,”WinstonChurchillmused,“humanbeingsmaybedividedintothreeclasses:thosewhoarebilledtodeath,thosewhoareworriedtodeath,andthosewhoareboredtodeath.”

Certainly,manyadultsfitalltoowellintooneorallofthosecategories.Growingolderoftenmeansslidingintoamonotonouscareerandgivingupone’sinterestsandhobbies.Theresultispredictable,buttragic:boredom,restlessness,anxiety,andevendepression.

Unfortunately,thesolutioncommonlysoughtforthismalaiseproducesexactlytheoppositeresult,andtendstomakeusevenmoreanxiousandrestless.Mostadultsthinktheyhavetoomuchontheirplate,sotheylongtounloadsomeoftheiractivitiesandhavetimetojustvegoutinfrontoftheirscreenofchoice.Theproblem,however,isnotthequantityofactivities,butthequality.Mostpeoplecouldinfactusemoreactivityintheirlife,justtherightkindofit:moreenjoyablework,moresatisfyingresponsibilities,moreopportunitiestocreate.

Findworkyouenjoy(butnotnecessarilybynavelgazing).Churchillbelievedthatinadditiontothethreeclassesofpeoplementionedabove,the“rational,industrious,useful”portionofthepopulationcouldbedividedintotwogroups:

“first,thosewhoseworkisworkandwhosepleasureispleasure;andsecondly,thosewhoseworkandpleasureareone.Ofthese,theformerarethemajority.Theyhavetheircompensations.Thelonghoursintheofficeorthefactorybringwiththemtheirreward,notonlythemeansofsustenance,butakeenappetiteforpleasureeveninitssimplestandmostmodestforms.ButFortune’sfavouredchildrenbelongtothesecondclass.Theirlifeisanaturalharmony.Forthemtheworkinghoursareneverlongenough.Eachdayisaholiday,andordinaryholidayswhentheycomearegrudgedasenforcedinterruptionsinanabsorbingvocation.”

There’sneverbeenatimeinhistorywhenyoungpeoplehavebeensoloathetowindupinthefirstgroup,andsokeentojointheranksofthesecond.Andyettheadvicegivenonhowtodoso—tolookwithin,findyourpassion,andthenfollowitnomatterwhat—unfortunatelyconsistslargelyofabjectpoppycock.

ChurchilldidindeeddevelopadeeploveoftheEnglishlanguageandofreadinginhisyouththatmighthaveportendedhisillustriouswritingcareer.Butinotherwayssuchapathseemedanunlikelyprospect—hestruggledwithmostsubjectsinschool,bombedhisexaminations,andattendedamilitarycollegeratherthananacademicuniversity.

Infact,hiswritingcareerdidn’tstartbecauseheknewearlyonitwashistruevocation,butratherbecauseoftherealloveofhislife:war.Churchillwantedtogettothefrontlinesofanyconflicthecould,andwhenhewasdeniedpermissiontojoinabattleasacombatant,he’dgetanewspapertosponsorhisparticipationasacorrespondent.Afterhisdispatcheswonawarmreception,hefiguredhe’dwriteabookaboutoneofhisexpeditions.Insodoing,hesawbothhowmuchheenjoyedtheprocessandhowmuchmoremoneyhecouldmakewithhispenthanhissword.Itwasonlythenthathedecidedtoquitthemilitaryandgivewritingarealgo.Thus,hefoundhiscallingasawriternotbydirectlytryingtofigureoutwhathewasmeanttodo,butindirectly,bytakingactionandsimplypursuingthingsthatheenjoyed.Suchapathhasbeenthemeansbywhichmanyothershavealsostumbledupontheirlife’swork.

Churchillfoundhisothercallinginlife–politics–usinganevenbettermethodforfindingone’svocation:insteadoflookingwithintodiscoverhispassion,helookedoutsidehimselfandfoundaproblemthatneededsolving.Inhiscase,theproblemwasthelackofhonorable,visionarymeningovernment–andheaddressedtheissuebyrunningforofficehimself.ThatpathisactuallyhowIfoundmyownvocationtoo:Isawaproblem–thedearthofqualitymen’smagazines–anddecidedtotakeacrackatfillingthevoid.Itwasn’tthatIhadapre-existingpassionforrevivingmanliness,andthenlookedforawaytofollowthatpassion;instead,IfoundaloveformyworkafterIstartedtryingtotackleaproblem.

Pleasureinone’sworkislesslikelytoprecedethebeginningofanadventureorcareerpath,thanitistofollowit.(Andthenatureofthepathjustmaysurpriseyou).

Theworldbelongstothosewhohustle.Whenyoudoworkyouenjoy,youoftendon’tmindtoilinglonghours.Andthat’sagoodthing,sinceifyoudon’tworklonghours,you’llnevergetyourdreamofftheground!

Everywhereyouturn,youcanfindlifestyledesignguruspromisingthatifyoufigureouttheright“hacks”and“secrets”tosuccess,you’llbeabletoearnagoodincomewithminimalwork.Passiveincome,baby!Isitpossibletoearnafewbucksusingsomekindofinternetscheme?Sure.Butisitpossibletocreatesomethinglastingandlegacy-producinginjustafewhoursaweek?Absolutelynot.Anyonewhotellsyouotherwiseisahuckstersellingyouabillofgoods.

Gettinganykindofworthwhileprojectorcareeroffthegroundwilltakeatonofworkandlonghours.Iftherearen’ttimeswhereyoufeellikeyoureyeballsarebleeding,you’redoingitwrong.Forexample,whilemanyfolksthinkyoucanstartasuccessfulblogbychinkinginalittletimenowandthen,intheearlyyearsofthesite,KateandIoftenworked60hoursaweekonit,each.Andeventodayweworkweekends,onvacation,andsometimesthewholenightthrough.

Inwhateverendeavoryoupursue,theworldwillalwaysbelongtothosewhohustle.

Enjoyableworkstillfeelslikework.There’samisconceptionouttherethatifyou’repassionateaboutyourwork,theneverysingledayisgoingtofeellikeafun,goodtime,andifitdoesn’t,you’reinthewrongjob.Butthat’sjustnotthecase.

Evenifyougetalotofpleasurefromyourwork,thatdoesn’tmeanit’sgoingtofeellikeyou’replayingallthetime.Churchillhimselfcategorizedworkandplayastwoseparatethings.Enjoyableworkstillfeelslike…work.Thatmeansyou’renotgoingtojumpoutofbedeverydayrearingtodoit,andthatsometimesitwillbequitedifficult.Andthat’sokay;pleasureandsatisfactionaren’tfoundonlyinfunandplay,butinembracingchallengesaswell.

Evenwhenyouloveyourjob,sometimesyou’llstillwanttoditchit.Justbecauseyouloveyourjob,doesn’tmeanyouwon’tsometimesfeellikecallingitquitsandtryingsomethingelse.

Churchillsometimesfoundthetaskofwritingabsolutelyexasperating.Whenhehadwriter’sblock,hewoulddescendintoaterriblemood,exhibitafoultemper,andkickoverwastebaskets.Andwhendeadlinesloomed,hecouldfindthestressunbearable:“Iamtoilingdoubleshifts,”hewroteClementineduringonearduousstretch.“Itislaborious:andIresentitandthepressure.”

Peopleconsiderbeingabloggerahighlydesirablegig,butmyjobtooissometimesstressful,pressure-filled,andhighlyannoying(see:internetcomments),andIdreamofrunningawaytobecomeabarberinaquietlittletowninVermontwherenoonecanfindme.Doesn’tmeanIdon’tlovemyjob,justmeansI’mahumanbeing.Everybodywondersifthegrassisgreenersomewhereelse.Soldiersfigurethey’llbehappierascivilians,quitthemilitary,andthenwonderiftheyshouldjoinbackup.Officeworkersthinkthey’llbehappierasentrepreneurs,andentrepreneursdreamofbeingabletoclockoutentirelyandleavetheirworkbehindeachnight.

Themoreyourworkisagoodfitforyou,thelessyou’llexperiencesuchmoments.Buteverybody,atonetimeoranother,wantstostopthetrainthey’reonandrunforthehills.

Findopportunitiesinsparemoments.Ifyou’recurrentlyinajobyouhate(moreofthetimethannot),andwanttopursueanewcareer,getstartedbyfindingopportunitiesinsparemoments.

Churchillwrotehisfirstbookduringa3-hourafternoonbreakhewasgivenwhilestationedinIndia.The23-year-oldandhisfellowcavalrymentypicallyusedthetimetonapandplaycards.Churchilldecidedtoinsteadsequesterhimselfandspendthosehourswriting.Theresultlaunchedhisliterarycareer.

TheArtofManlinesssimilarlybeganasamoonlightformeinlawschool.I’dspend9amto9pmeachdayatlawschool,studyingandworkingapart-timejob.ThenI’dcomehomeatnightandputinafewhourswritingforthewebsiteandworkingonthemanuscriptforourfirstbook:TheArtofManliness:ClassicSkillsandMannersfortheModernMan.ItwasonlythreeyearsafterIlaunchedthesitethatIwasfinallyabletodoitfull-time.

Keeparoutineandschedule.Aswe’vepreviouslydiscussed,Churchillkeptaunique,but

quitestrictdailyroutine.Thishelpedhisproductivityenormously,anditwilldothesameforyou–especiallyifyou’retryingtogetasidehustleofftheground.Togetstarted,learnhowtoplanyourweek,andyou’llbeonestepclosertoChurchillianproductivity.

Focus.Churchill’senormousproductivitywasnotaresultsimplyofthenumberofhoursheworked,buthowwellheconcentratedduringthosehours.Lt.GeneralIanJacobwasastoundedby“thefuryofhisconcentration.Whenhismindwasoccupiedwithaparticularproblem,howeverdetailed,hefocuseduponitrelentlessly.Nobodycouldturnhimaside.”

Workinglonghoursisn’tenoughifyouspendhalfthetimesurfingtheinternet.Howyouuseyourhoursisalsoparamount—qualityisjustasimportantasquantity.

Toimproveyourownattentionspan,trythese11trainingexercises,alongwithoneChurchillheartilyendorsedhimself–thedailynap.

Focusisalsoimprovedwhenyouhaveaclearvisionandobjective.Don’tengageinactivityforactivity’ssake—knowyouraim.Churchillwouldoftensetagoalforhimself,suchaswritingatleast1,000wordsaday,inordertomakeadeadline.Andduringthewar,Manchesterwrites,“HiseyeswerefocusedonHitlertotheexclusionofallelse.”

Knowyourmissionthoroughly,planyourstrategyshrewdly,executeyourbattleplantirelessly,andvictorywillbeyours.

Thecommonwisdomthesedaysonhowtoretainyouryouthfulzealintoadulthoodfollowsthelineofavoidingcommitmentsandresponsibilitiesliketheplague.Remainunattached;liveonlyforyourself.

There’sonlyoneproblemwiththisapproach—inseekingperpetualyouth,itdeniesoneofthestrongestinclinationsofchildhood:beingeffectiveintheworld.

WhenGuswasjustemergingintotoddlerhood,hejustcouldn’tgetenoughofflippinglightswitchesandpressingbuttons.Thelightgoeson,thelightgoesoff;thelightgoeson,thelightgoesoff.Thiswastrulyoneofhisearliestdelights:makingsomethinghappenoutsidehimself.Hewasjustbeginningtounderstandtheinnatepowerwehavetochangeourworld.

Thoughweoftenforgetthedepthofthissatisfactionaswegetolder—satingitontrivialitiesthanrequireusonlytobespectators—thelongingtobeeffectiveintheworldremains.Itisanitchthatcanonlybescratchedthroughtheassumptionofresponsibility,forinresponsibilitythereispower.

Thosewhospurnresponsibilitydoremainaschildren,butintheleastdesirableofways.

Theycontinuetoendlesslyflickthelightswitchupanddown–anactnowrenderedintheformofclickingamouse.Thatistheendoftheirpower:theabilitytoimpotentlyselectfromapredeterminedmenuofoptions.Whensaidmenudoesnotyieldsufficientoptionstotheirliking,theironlyrecourseistowhine.

Totakeonresponsibilityistostraponeselfintothedriver’sseatratherthansitidlyasapassenger.Studieshaveshownthatmilitarypilotsexperiencelessstressduringflightthantheirnavigators;thosewhohavecontrol,evenwhentheirburdenofresponsibilityisgreater,aremoreatpeacethanthosewhoaresimplyalongfortheride.

Thus,thevigorofyouthisnotfoundinresponsibilityavoidance,butinitsembrace.Themostmiserableadultsarethosewhocomplainaboutmedia,culture,politics,andeverythingelse,andfeelliketheycan’tdoadamnthingaboutit.Thehappiestadultstakeontheextraburdenofbecomingleaders,becausetheyenjoythesatisfactionofmakingachange–howeversmall–intheworld.

Inbecomingaleader—inyourfamily,church,community,work,andculture—keepafewthingsinmind:

Beeverreadyandprepareyourselftolead.Instudyingthelivesofgreatmen,Ihavebeenstruckbythewaymanyofthemfeltasthoughtheiropportunitytoleadhadpassedthemby,onlytounexpectedlybecalledintoservicelaterinlife.

Inthe1930s,whenChurchillwasalreadyapproachinghis60s,theprevailingwisdomwasthathischancesofeverbecomingprimeministerwerealmostnil.WhenaBritishdelegationofMPsledbyLadyAstortraveledtotheSovietUnionandmetwithStalinin1931,theRussianleaderaskedthemaboutrisingpoliticiansbackinEngland,andinparticularaboutChurchill.“Churchill?”Astorexclaimedwithascornfullaugh,“Oh,he’sfinished.”

Whilemosteveryoneelsecountedhimout,ChurchillkepthimselfeverreadytoserveanddidnotgiveuponhisdreamofbecomingtheheadofHerMajesty’sGovernment.Bycultivatingcontactswhoconfidentiallypassedalonginformationtohim,hekepthimselfbetterinformedthannearlyanyoneelseaboutwhatwasgoingoninsideGermanyduringthe30s.Andheneverwatereddownhispositionsorsoftenedhisjeremiadstobetteralignwiththepublicmood.Insteadofchangingtomatchpublicopinion,hestoodsteady,andlettheworldslowlycomearoundtohistruth.

ThuswhenChurchillfinallyassumedtheofficeofprimeminister,hefeltasifhewas“walkingwithDestiny,”andthatallofhis“pastlifehadbeenbutapreparation”forthechallengeahead.Byremainingtruetohisconvictions,hehadpositionedhimselftobeafarmoreeffectiveleaderthanheotherwisewouldhavebeen:“Mywarningsoverthelastsixyearshadbeensonumerous,sodetailed,andwerenowsoterriblyvindicated,thatnoonecouldgainsayme.Icouldnotbereproachedeitherformakingthewarorwithwantofpreparationforit.”AndbystayingkeenlyabreastofGermany’spreparationsandstrategyoverthecourseofthepreviousdecade,hecouldconfidentlysay,“Iknewagooddealaboutitall,andIwassureIwouldnotfail.”

Thetimetopreparetoleadisnotinthemidstofthestorm,butinthecalmbeforeit.Thingsmaybegoinggreatinyourfamilyandbusinessrightnow,butiftoughtimescomeareyoureadytostepupandserve?

Haveacommandoflanguage.Justbecausemerewhiningischildishandimpotent,doesn’tmeanwordshavenopower.Theyhaveinfactagreatdealofit–whentheycanbemasterfullywielded.“Thisisstoopid,”willhardlywinadherentstoyourcause,butevocativelyworded,potentlyconstructed,logicallysoundargumentscan,andhave,changedtheworld.Thus,Churchillargued,hewhohasacommandoflanguage:

“wieldsapowermoredurablethanthatofagreatking.Heisanindependentforceintheworld.Abandonedbyhisparty,betrayedbyhisfriends,strippedofhisoffices,whoevercancommandthispowerisstillformidable.”

Itispartlyforthisreasonthatastrongcasecanbemadeforliteracybeingoneofthefundamentaltraitsofadulthood.

Exampleisking.Evengreaterthantheforceofwordsisthepowerofexample.Churchilldidnotsimplytalkthetalk;hewalkedthewalk.Themightofhismoralcodewasunquestionable,andthestrengthofhischaractercreatedaneffectthatwasdownrightelectricandmagnetic.Peoplewantedtofollowhimtotheendsoftheearth.

Asfathers,coaches,andbosses,agoodexampleisworthfarmorethanahundredsermonsanddiatribes.Aleaderwhodemonstratessterling,purpose-drivenmanhoodwillhardlyneedtoopenhismouthtogetotherstoexpendthemselvesinhiscause.

Prepareyourselfforthefactthatpeoplewillwanttodethroneyou.Wheneveryoufindyourselfinapositiontoenactrealchange,criticswilltakenoticeandtrytotearyoudown.Justembracetheseattacksasasignyou’reactuallydoingsomethingintheworld,andcarryon.

Havethecouragetofaceingratitude.Justbecauseyoudogreatthings,don’texpecttobeforeverfawnedoverwithpraiseandthanks.Peoplehaveashortmemory,andapenchantforconcentratingonthenegative.AfterChurchillledhiscountrymenthroughalmostsixyearsofworldwar,theyturnedhimoutofoffice,desiringadifferentleadertogoverntheminpeacetime.TheblowmadehisfriendHaroldNicholson“sickwithhumannature.Oncetheopenseaisreached,weforgethowweclungtothepilotinthestorm.”ButChurchillwavedoffsuchgrousingaboutingratitude.“Ohno,”hereplied,“Iwouldn’tcallitthat.Theyhavehadaveryhardtime.”

Churchillregrettedthathisservicewascutshorterthanhewouldhaveliked,buthehadaccomplishedmuchofthemissionhehadsetouttodo,andthatwasenough.

CreateLikeaGod:TheEssentialNatureofHobbies

ThesecretbehindChurchill’sherculeanproductivitymayseemlikeaparadox:anequallyproductiveuseofhisleisuretime!

Churchillhadfoundthatitwasonlypossibletodosomanyhoursofeffectiveworkeachday;afteracertainpointhisoutputofwritingandideasbecamemuddled.Byturningtoanotheractivity–onethatwasdifferentfromhiscentralwork–hecouldreturntohislabortrulyrefreshedandstartcrankingouttop-notchstuffoncemore.

Churchillbelievedthatoscillatingbetweendifferentactivitiesinthiswayactuallyprovidedsuperiorrejuvenationtoone’smindthanevenaboutoffull-onrelaxation:

“Itisnousesayingtothetired‘mentalmuscles’…‘Iwillgiveyouagoodrest,’‘Iwillgoforalongwalk,’or‘Iwillliedownandthinkofnothing.’Themindkeepsbusyjustthesame.Ifithasbeenweighingandmeasuring,itgoesonweighingandmeasuring.Ifithasbeenworrying,itgoesonworrying…Itisuselesstoarguewiththemindinthiscondition…AgiftedAmericanpsychologisthassaid,‘worryis

aspasmoftheemotion;themindcatchesholdtosomethingandwillnotletitgo.’Onecanonlygentlyinsinuatesomethingelseintoitsconvulsivegrasp.Andifthissomethingelseisrightlychosen,ifitisreallyattendedbytheilluminationofanotherfieldofinterest,gradually,andoftenquiteswiftly,theoldunduegriprelaxesandtheprocessofrecuperationandrepairbegins.”

Forthisreason,Churchillrecommendedthateveryonehaveafewhobbies.Withinthecultivationofstimulatingpastimeslaytheantidotebothtobeing“worriedtodeath”and“boredtodeath.”

Chooseyourhobbiesthoughtfully.ThoughChurchillfeltthathobbieswereanessentialpartofafulfilledadulthood,hedidn’tthinkone’spastimesweresomethingtobechosenwilly-nilly:

“thisisnotabusinessthatcanbeundertakeninadayorswiftlyimprovisedbyamerecommandofthewill.Thegrowthofalternativementalinterestsisalongprocess.Theseedsmustbecarefullychosen;theymustfallongoodground;theymustbesedulouslytended,ifthevivifyingfruitsaretobeonhandwhenneeded.”

Engaginginstimulatinghobbies,Churchillbelieved,wasequallyessentialbothto“thosewhoseworkisworkandwhosepleasureispleasure”and“thosewhoseworkandpleasureareone.”Themostimportantfactorinchoosingahobby,heposited,istoselectapastimethatissufficientlydifferentfromwhateverworkitisyouperforminyourdayjob:

“Itisnouseofferingthemanuallabourer,tiredoutwithahardweek’ssweatandeffort,thechanceofplayingagameoffootballorbaseballonSaturdayafternoon.Itisnouseinvitingthepoliticianortheprofessionalorbusinessman,whohasbeenworkingorworryingaboutseriousthingsforsixdays,toworkandworryabouttriflingthingsattheweek-end.”

Churchillalsonotedthatwhilereadingisapopularpastime,engaginginthathobbyaloneis“toonearlyakintotheordinarydailyroundofthebrain-workertogivethatelementofchangeandcontrastessentialtorelief.”

Churchillfurthercounseledthatthehobbiesthataremosteffectiveinrestoring“psychicequilibrium”arethosethat“callintousethosepartsofthemindwhichdirectbotheyeandhand,”andnotedthat“Manymenhavefoundgreatadvantageinpractisingahandicraftforpleasure.”Thisbitofadviceisparticularlyimportantforinformationworkers;findinganactivityoutsideofyourjobinwhichyoucanuseyourhandscanbringneededbalancetoyourlife.Givingyourselftheopportunitytocreateinatangiblewayistrulyimportantnomatterwhatyourjob–especiallyifyoudon’tgettoexerciseyourcreativityduringtheworkday.

Finally,Churchillwarnsagainsttheimpulsetowanttodabbleinabunchofthingssimplytoenjoy“anewpleasure,anewexcitement.”Everyoneknowshowfunitistorunoutandbuyanewmountainbikeorpaintset…whichthengathersdustonceone’sinitialburstofenthusiasmhaswornoff.AsChurchilladvises,“disciplineinoneformoranotheristhemosthopefulpath.”

Tosumup:thoughtfullyconsiderwhatkindsofhobbiesmightbethemostinterestingandrejuvenatingforyourself,pickonesthatinvolveanactivitydifferentthanwhatyoudoforyourdayjob,andthenstickwiththemforanamplelengthoftimetoseeiftheymightbecomealifetimelove.

Outsourcewhenyoucan.Churchill’ssupernaturalproductivitywasn’tofcourse100%duetohisenthusiasmandfocus;healsohadateamofservantsandhiredhelpthattookcareofhisbasicfunctionsandfreeduptimeinhisschedule(thoughitshouldalsobenotedthatmillionsofmenhavehadasmuchormoremoney,andjustasmanyservants,andyetaccomplishedlittletonothingwiththeirlives).Churchilldidn’tcleanhisownhouse,cookhisownmeals,ormakehisownpurchases.

Iusedtothinkthatpersonaloutsourcinglikethiswasanunmitigatedbad–apracticethatsappedamanoftheDIYethicsocentraltocharacter.YetasIstudiedthelivesofgreatmen,Idiscoveredthatnearlyofallthemwere,likeChurchill,consummateoutsourcers.Anditseemedtomethattheyachievedtheirgreatnessnotdespitethistactic,butinsomewaysbecauseofit.Whichistosay,it’shardtoarguethatChurchill,andtheworld,wouldhavebeenbetterservedhadhespenthisSaturdaymorningsrakingleaves,ratherthanwritingspeeches.

Manyadultstodayarebored,restless,anxious,anddepressed.Churchillhimselfwaspronetoboutsofmelancholy,buthisceaselessengagementinsatisfyingwork,meaningfulresponsibilities,andstimulatinghobbies,kepthis“blackdog”atbay.

Inordertostaveoffthedarkmoodsthataccompaniedidlenessandboredom,Churchillwouldmakeoneofhisfamous“ruthlessbreaks.”Asthebodyguardtaskedwithkeepingtrackofhimlamented,“Hewillmoveatamoment’snotice.Hewillmovewithoutnotice!”Ifhisdinnerguestswerestuffyanddull,he’dtrytoactcivillyandbearwiththemforawhile,butthenhe’dsimplygiveupandleavethetable.Ifamoviehewaswatchingturnedouttobeasnooze,hewouldn’tmakehimselfseehowitended,butwouldgetupandwalkout–evenifhistheatercompanionswereMr.andMrs.FranklinRoosevelt!
