Tip 1. Sort and recycle

Start sorting and packing early, so you can recycle as much as possible by using your weekly recycling collections. By planning ahead you can avoid leaving lots of rubbish when you move out.

Your rubbish and recycling is collected every week – to check your collection day, enter your postcode on the homepage of the Council’s website www.bathnes.gov.uk or contact us.

Tip 2. Donate it

If you don’t want it someone else might!

Clothes, shoes, books, bric-a-brac and CDs can be donated to your local charity shops.

Food – use your food waste recycling collection but if you have unopened tins or packets contact Bath Food Bank www.bath.foodbank.org.uk You can drop in suitable non-perishable donations to their office c/o Genesis Trust at 1-3 James Street West BA1 2BX (open weekdays 10am – 4pm) Tel 01225 463549.

Furniture – if in reusable condition donate to www.genesistrust.org.uk or www.sofaproject.org.uk or advertise on organisations such as freecycle www.freecycle.org

Tip 3. Use the Council’s Recycling Centre

You can take extra rubbish, recycling, large items or electrical items here for free to be recycled or reused. In Bath the centre is at Midland Road BA1 3AT (by Argos just off Upper Bristol Road). Opening times are:

Monday to Friday 8am – 4.15pm

Weekends 9am – 3.45pm

Bank holidays 8am – 3.45pm

Tip 4. Book a Council pick up service

Useful if you have large items such as sofas, beds or fridges which you can’t take to the Recycling Centre yourself. It costs £13.45 for a collection of up to 3 items for registered students – contact us to arrange.

Tip 5. Clean before you leave

Leave your property as you found it, including the garden. If you don’t, you risk losing all or some of your deposit. For a one off garden clear up you can buy Council garden waste sacks. Put them out for collection on same day as your rubbish and recycling. This is a fortnightly collection so you need to check your collection week on the council website homepage. You can buy Council sacks at certain local shops - see list on website or contact us.

If you believe that you have been unfairly charged for any costs after moving out of your property please contact:

University of Bath students - Advice & Representation Centre 01225 386 906

Bath Spa students - Student Housing Services 01225 875 843

Tip 6. Respect your neighbours

If you are having leaving parties please warn your neighbours and keep the noise at a reasonable level. You may be moving out, but your neighbours deserve consideration and being respectful will help the next students who move in.

Good luck with your move and we wish you well for the future!
