Tips for Second Year Medicine!

I made this for a friend in Section C, and decided since I spent a bit of time on it, that I’d

share it with everyone na lang. I hope this will help you this coming school year. It's a bit

long, but not super comprehensive like the rst year tips that someone posted a little

while ago. Sorry.

If in st year !"s outshined everyone in #natomy, in $nd year %ed "ech and &ursing

grads will have it easier than the others.

ou have ( yearly sub)ects* !harmacology, %icrobiology, !athology, %edicine I and

%!!+C.

Pharmacology

I think this sub)ect was hard for everyone, no matter what premed you came from you

are going to struggle. of course !harma grads had it easier and some nurses knew some

of the drugs already, so yay for pharma and nursing grads-- !sych grads like me beware.

efriend !harma classmates- It helps if you have or $ in your group especially when

you have lab reports. "he facis are merciless and usually your !harma kasubsec are

better e/uipped to save your group from low grades if they ask hard /uestions.

I didn't use the book most of the time, since they give you handouts which followed the

lecture. "his is where they got 789 of their /uestions. I've only used the book to

understand some topics, I think :;1 I didn't even read the whole thing. I only read the

book because the handout didn't make sense and I fell asleep during the lecture. #nd to

be honest, I didn't have enough time to read it. ut I suggest you read anyway, my

!harma seatmate would read the book and she’d get the highest grade in my subsec

may kasamang alay3tulog pa yun minsan. Sample and shiftings =88 points coming

from D$ topics>. "hey get 787:9 from handout and lectures and :89 from the book.

"o be honest you won't have time to cram reading the book at this point, so if you're

going to study the book, make sure you did that for the lecture beforehand. #t the end ofeach /uiA, there is a prescription problem =it's fun-- : point siya> of course, the drug, the

dosage, the instructions =important parts> will comprise around ( points, so parang all or

nothing din if you get it wrong from the start. e careful. !harmacology is hard, and is no

)oke. 5ven if you study everything you might be surprised to get a low score. Studying for

it will be hard, sometimes the drug sound too weird and it's going to be hard to

remember their names3spelling, their indications, side eEects, contraindications, etc. ut

it's not impossible. Fhat I did was make my own silly mnemonic. =5 Hust study beforehand and

listen to your lecturers-

Microbiology

ecause of my premed this was one of my banes during the start of the year. So I spent

more time on this sub)ect compared to the other yearly sub)ects in my rst sem. I did not

know what JcoccoK meant =like what shape that would be>, medyo fail. If you don't have

any background on this, I suggest you study to heart some basics.


ook, yes- I think it helped me a lot. Falang handouts, the department has ppts for every

lecture, luckily S%#+"&G"5S has these ppts in word format, ?" sometimes => bago nayung ppt lecture, =$> iba lecturer, =L> may bagong slides. So make sure to get a copy of

the ppts from your lecturers. Sample, or from your book. #s long as you study,

you're ok. ou only have $ long e. #lso, be nice to the lab technician and she'll

be nice to you. *>>>>

Pathology

"his sub)ect is supposed to be NhistologyN but abnormal. It's not )ust that actually. It's

hard and it re/uires more thinking compared to 2istology. "o be honest at the end of the

year I still didn’t have a hang of how they test you on this sub)ect.


ou have two options for your book. 0addy +obbins =sobrang kapal, chapter L8:8

pages, maliit yung font>, aby +obbins =this is a tiny book, imagine baby &ettersiAed,

kulang, chapter, $8 pages>. %y kasubsec was the only one who e. OuiAAes and shiftings will come from lecture,ppt, #&0 the book. %icroscope pracs are doable, if you were ok in 2isto, may clues sa

side/uestions. +ead those rst and sometimes you can answer what specimen that is

without looking at the microscope. !ro)ection /uestions will be hard, they'll get photos

from wedpath, the book or the lecture, and the /uestions will be like those in your

longs3shiftings. #s always, alay wisely.

Information overload------- "here are a lot of things to memoriAe here, measurements,

dates, computations, drugs, infections, etc.


ou have two books to choose from, Filliams or #!%C. I bought Filliams, it covered most

of the topics. @or some specic information about G in the !hilippines I had to

photocopy a few pages from my friend’s #!%C. I think around $ topics lang. ou have to

use smartnotes =;89> and supersubsec =L89> for lectures. "here is so much information

to study and it will keep on repeating that same info. Sample< is helpful (8;89 of the

time for short /uiAAes.

"his year is more on how to assess how good an article is and what kind of study it is and

if you can use it to help your patient in choosing what drug3treatment is for them.

you’re having this sub)ect $nd sem since they copypaste the same /uestions from Sec #and ’s tests in st sem, some are sample< from other batches. ut someone complained

to the department about that so our nals was hard. 2aha.
