Superintendent’s Thoughts
Dr. Gretta Kumpf
On Tuesday, November 7, voters will elect two Board of Education members. The board’s primary responsibilities are to set the long-term vision for the district, adopt policies, and oversee the annual budget. In order to learn more about the candidates qualifications and their positions on important topics, students enrolled in Tippecanoe High School’s Advanced Placement Government classes are hosting a Meet the Candidates Night on Thursday, October 26th. AP Government students study the foundations of our government and processes of the American political system with an emphasis on policy-making. Organizing this event requires students to research the issues and formulate thought-provoking questions. It gives our students valuable hands-on experience that applies their knowledge of the curriculum. Though students are preparing questions, audience members will have an opportunity to write out their questions they would like to ask the four candidates. Following the formal event, candidates will be available for conversation. The candidates seeking the two seats for the BOE are Corine Doll, Joellen Heatherly, Frank Maus, and Eric Windeknecht. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. at THS and is open to the public. The BOE is such an important part of our district. I hope many of you will attend.

The Tippecanoe High School Marching Band earned its fourth Superior Rating of the season Saturday night at the Marion Local Marching Band Invitational. They received a superior rating from every judge, received their highest score of the season, won first place percussion in their class (which was also the highest percussion score in the entire event), and won 2nd place in the show. The band performs next at OMEA State Marching Band Finals this Sunday at Welcome Stadium. This will be the band’s 14th consecutive year going to State Marching Band Finals. There will be a balloon send-off in the high school parking lot prior to their 12:30 departure for their 3:45 performance.

Congratulations to this year’s first members of the Wee Devils Music Club at Broadway. To become a member, students must attend a band, choir, or other musical performance in the district. Second graders Lilly Hept and Sarah Theiman attended a school concert and received their t-shirt provided by the music boosters. Music teacher Jennifer Wightman hopes this generates an interest in music and supports our students.

PINK OUT DAY
LT Ball Intermediate students observed Pink Out Day in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Donning pink shirts, many students stopped by the pink fire truck parked in the school parking lot and tried on the firefighting gear. The school also collected donations for the local chapter of Pink Ribbons Girls that supports women with breast and reproductive cancers.

LT Ball Intermediate students in the classes of Erica Brogan and Amber Wampler have been finishing up their process skills unit. Students studied observing, predicting, communicating, inferring, classifying, and measuring. They also read the book Who Were the Wright Brothers to incorporate these skills. As a culminating project , the fourth graders completed a STEM challenge to create a paper airplane that can travel the greatest distance. They were provided one piece of paper, tape, glue, scissors, and one popsicle stick.

Nevin Coppock students enjoyed a pizza lunch with their principal. The students’ names were drawn from a raffle as one of the read-a-thon prizes. The read-a-thon was sponsored by the parent group PIE at Nevin Coppock and Broadway Elementary and raised almost $10,000 for each school. Thank you PIE!
Medication Safety Patrol
Kroger Pharmacy, in partnership with Ohio State University, is providing school presentations on proper use of prescription medications. Dr. Johanna Harris, daughter of Broadway Elementary teacher Marilyn Potter, talked with the second graders about who can dispense medicine and the importance of not using another person’s medicines. The mission of Generation Rx is to educate people of all ages about the potential dangers of misusing prescription drugs. According to Generation Rx, “More than six million Americans age 12 and up have used a prescription drug non-medically in the past month.” It also states the scope of prescription drug misuse is epidemic and that drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States.

FROM BROADWAY’S LIBRARY CLERK BETH KISER:
“As I was leaving for my lunch break today, I saw a third grade boy in the hall in front of me heading out to recess. I then noticed a dad walking into the building after visiting his daughter during recess. This Air Force father was dressed in his military fatigues. The third grader suddenly stopped, look at the man, and perfectly saluted him. He then continued quietly on his way outside. I can’t explain how touching it was to witness this display of respect from a child; it almost brought me to tears. I will never forget it.” Thank you Phillip Harris for doing something respectful when you didn’t think someone was looking.
Observed in the Hall of Broadway Elementary School
