Twenty one YACA members now know the powerful role
the media plays in fighting corruption in PNG.
YACA members learned these skills during a week long
Media Smart Youth Workshop hosted by Transparency
International PNG.
The Participants were taught how to use effectively mass
media to promote and disseminate information about the
work, objectives and values of YACA .
The MSY workshop program covered both electronic and
print media; introducing the participants to newspaper,
radio, television and the internet and teaching the
participants skills needed to produce media products.
On the final day, the students organized their first Press
Conference, unveiling the five media products that they
designed during the workshop: The Trumpet (Monthly YACA Newsletter), YACA– The
Voice (Quarterly YACA Newspaper), a 30 second YACA Radio Jingle, a 30 second
YACA TV Advertisement and the YACA Blog.
The next step is for YACA to publish their issues and seek funding to air their radio and
tv spots.
The students also express their appreciation for the Speakers who took time off work to
help the students out: Mr Jerry Bagita (TIPNG), Ms Hane Toua (TIPNG), Ms Yvonne
Ngutlick (TIPNG), Mr Richard Kassman (TIPNG Director), Mr Kevin Marai (Kundu 2
and NBC), Mr Graham Robinson (Piksa Ltd), Mr Emmanuel Narakobi (Masalai
Communications) and Mr Robert Weber (Old Plantation).
The Media Smart Youth Workshop would not have been made possible without
funding, support and help from our main donor Strongim Pipol Strongim Nesen
(SPSN), Ok Tedi Limited—Port Moresby Office, Bank of South Pacific, World Bank
Papua New Guinea and the Board and Staff of Transparency International PNG.

Thirty six students and two teachers were among the first group
of YACA members that came together for the first YACA
forum : ‘What is Corruption?
The students unanimously agreed that they had a great
contribution to make to this fight and for change to begin with
themselves as individuals; refusal to practice corruption and a
rejection of the attitudes that support and allow corruption to
happen.
Corruption is an ongoing issue and is holding back development
in our country. It is undermining our freedom and destroying
our democracy.
As a member of YACA, we as a group aim to develop good
quality leaders, to give youth an opportunity to be heard, make
positive changes in their every day lives through the changing of
self, to lead positive community activities and services and to
have strength in numbers.

against Corruption
The Wake Up! PNG Exhibition held in February was an ideal opportunity to re-launch YACA.
The Exhibition was hosted by YACA’s coalition partner TIPNG, and was held at the Holiday
Inn Hotel in Port Moresby.
YACA took the opportunity to showcase the exciting events for 2012 and signed up 148 new
members! The exhibition was attended by over 500 students and members of the general
public, bringing YACA to the forefront of the fight against corruption in PNG.

A team of TIPNG staff took time off hectic work schedules to visit schools
in the month of February, kick-starting the new look YACA for 2012.
The visits were also an opportunity to talk about corruption in PNG and
where PNG stands on a global scale in the anti-corruption fight.
Port Moresby Grammar, Port Moresby International, Gordons Secondary,
Jubilee Catholic Secondary and Salvation Army Koki Secondary were part
of the five schools visited during this exercise.
The school visits are a way of introducing YACA to extra-curricular
activities at the different secondary schools in Port Moresby.
School visits are open to any schools who are interested in YACA &
TIPNG.

YACA Pledge
With faith in God’s mercy and love
I ……………………… Pledge
That I will always speak the truth;
That I will always respect other
people’s property; That I will always be gentle in my actions
and in my words; That I will always repay my debts;
That I will always keep my promises;
May God help me to be faithful to this
pledge all the days of my life…..
AMEN
“YACA members are asked to memorise this pledge and say it every day to
remind
themselves of their commitment to opposing
corruption. The Pledge does not
describe the kind of person I am.
It describes the kind of person I want to become.”
REQUEST FOR NOMINATIONS
Transparency International Papua New Guinea (TIPNG) will be running a 10 day youth democracy camp
during the September 2012 school holidays from the 19th - 28th. The camp will be held at the Kefamo
Catholic Conference Centre in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province. We are looking for 56 students who
are in grades 10, 11 or 12 in 2012 to attend the camp. All the transport, accommodation and meal costs of
participants will be covered by TIPNG.
During the camp students will learn about the basic principles behind democracy and good governance
and will be put through simulations where they will carry out governance through doing things such as
passing laws and conducting elections. They will learn many advocacy skills and will also meet and inter-
act with prominent leaders.
Application Process We will be applying a strict selection procedure due to the restricted number of available places.
Who should be nominated? Every secondary school should nominate a maximum of 2 students (using form attached) - one boy and
one girl - who will represent the school at the camp. We are mindful that not all schools will be represent-
ed however it is our intention that there is a good mix of provincial and rural and urban representation.
What are the Criteria? Students must be between 17 and 20 years old and currently attending school. To increase your students’
chances of being selected, we would appreciate it if the student could write a one page essay on the topic
“My responsibilities as a PNG citizen” and attach it to the application. Send applications back to the
TIPNG office on the contact details mentioned below.
When do nominations close? All nominations must be received by 31st July 2012. Once students have been nominated, we will then
select the final 56 student participants and advice the respective students and their schools in early August
2012.
What kind of students are we interested in? The students will have shown the ability to work with others and have demonstrated leadership in their
community. They should have demonstrated a clear commitment to fairness, protecting the rights of all
and therefore the basic concepts of democracy. They should be able to operate well in an open discussion
environment.
Please Note that the camp is a very demanding on participants and so we ask you to think very carefully
who you nominate. There were instances of family-related nominations that clearly did not have leader-
ship potential. Notwithstanding the above, the students will find the camp very rewarding.
If you have any questions about the camp, contact Hane Toua or Michelle Wong on;

Leadership was the focus area for the second YACA forum held at Gordons Secondary
School, was attended by over a hundred students and was focused on the topic of Leader-
ship. Mr Devan Kula from The Voice Inc based his talk on Youth Leadership. His presenta-
tion covered the types of leadership, process of leadership, leadership traits, factors and
principles of leadership and the difference between being a Boss and being a leader. He chal-
lenged the students to evaluate themselves and their ability to lead. He also told the stu-
dents that people want to be guided by those they respect and who have a clear sense of
direction; A sense of direction is achieved by conveying a strong vision of the future.
Mr Richard Kassman OBE, then gave a presentation on the controversial Judicial Conduct
Act, giving special emphasis to the impact of the new law on ordinary Papua New Guineans.
He encouraged the students to read up and keep informed on the current political issues at
hand, and to take time to understand how decisions being made in Parliament will affect
their lives.
The students did well to present their opinions and gave excellent explanations on each
point they presented. The students who attended the forum are looking forward to doing
their part to fight corruption in PNG.
Mrs Fredah Wallum, a lecturer at the University of Technology Lae, together with her
husband Mr David Wallum, have started a YACA group at Unitech, hoping to bring about a
change in attitude in the young people in their institution. Mrs Wallum came to know about
YACA when she was teaching at Jubilee Catholic Secondary School. The Wallums said they
were looking forward to raising awareness, especially among the
youth on how much corruption was negatively affecting the
nation and the role young people can play to fight it.
A team from TIPNG visited the University of Technology, Lae,
to talk about the work of the TIPNG and introduce YACA. The
presentation highlighted why YACA was formed, the principles
it stands for and what we hope to achieve through YACA.
The Unitech YACA group have elected their Board Representatives and are working on a
program to bring the message of YACA to the Secondary Schools in Lae, Morobe Province.
