The Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center represents an extraordinary joining of two disciplines that on their face may appear quite different: art and the law. However, these two seemingly disparate pursuits are in fact kindred human endeavors. Both the law and art are fundamentally aimed at bringing order from disorder. The law does this for society, forming the very bedrock of civilization. Art does this in the physical realm, forming the basis of beauty. The Late Thomas J. Moyer, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio from January 1, 1987, until April 2, 2010, once commented on this harmony, saying, “Great judges share with artists a vision for the big picture, the entirety of society; the artist and the judge share a concern for life in its many forms, its successes and its failures.” Any citizen can experience this truth by taking a walk through the halls of the Moyer Judicial Center, from the soaring murals in the Courtroom, which give life to the dreams of Ohioans of decades ago, to the architecture of the building, a neoclassical tribute to the first civilization to truly embrace democracy. Now, a new generation of art is on display throughout the building. The Supreme Court of Ohio contemporary fine art collection is a unique display of pieces from renowned Ohio artists, portraying themes exploring the beauty of the law, the diversity of our land and the nobility of Ohio’s most precious resource: its people. Much of this art was made possible by the generous support of Art Access Gallery, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Kingsley A. Taft family, the Ohio History Connection, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Foundation, the Southern Ohio Museum, and other patrons. You are invited to use this brochure as a guide for exploring this unique collection, remembering that art and the law are both in pursuit of the truth.
