Tinnitus Sound Therapy Offers Relief to those Suffering
from Ringing in the Ears
While there is no cure for Tinnitus, a ringing or buzzing in the
ears, relief can be found through several treatments. These
treatments including hearing aids, counseling, medication, and
even Tinnitus sound therapy. The National Institute on Deafness and Other
Communication Disorders (NIDCD) cites three
types of Tinnitus sound therapy treatments
currently available to tinnitus sufferers:
• Wearable sound generators are small
electronic devices that are worn in the ear
and are designed to mask the tinnitus by
emitting a soft “shhhhhhh” sound, random tones or even music.
• For those with mild Tinnitus who need help relaxing or going to
sleep, tabletop sound generators can be programmed to play pleasant sounds like waves, waterfalls, or rain.
• Acoustic neural stimulation is designed to help those with very
loud or chronic Tinnitus. This treatment uses a small device and headphones to deliver a broadband acoustic signal embedded in
music to stimulate a change in the brain’s neural circuits and to
desensitize the patient to Tinnitus. Some treatments even allow
patients to listen to their favorite music while the sound therapy
program works in the background.
All of these treatments represent good news for Tinnitus
sufferers. Your hearing care professional will be able to
recommend the right Tinnitus sound therapy for you.
