Breathitt County left little doubt as to who the best team is in the 55th District with a sound whipping of the Wolfe County Wolves last Thurs- day night at Woods Coliseum. Coach Denny Fugate’s Bob- cats thoroughly thrashed the Wolves by a score of 93-65 in a contest that wasn’t really as close as the score indicates. Breathitt’s lead approached 40 points before Coach Fugate emptied his bench in the fourth quarter. Breathitt’s Dynamic Duo, Alex Hamilton and Wes Noble, led the Bobcats with 27 and 25 points, respectively, and junior Richard Trent arguably had his best game with 15 points to go along with a superior defen- sive effort. Breathitt led 14-6 after one quarter, with Wolfe’s Sawyer Denniston held in check with only two points. In the meantime, Hamilton and Josh Fletcher set the pace for Coach Fugate with five and six first-quarter points, respec- tively. Ryan Cox also helped set the table for Breathitt with a 3-pointer, as the Bobcats claimed the early momentum. Breathitt put away Wolfe in the second quarter with huge performances from Noble and Hamilton. Noble, the gifted sophomore, had 14 points in the surge, including two 3-pointers, and Hamilton, the sharp-shooting junior, added nine, as Breathitt pushed its lead. Trent added a punctua- tion mark to the explosive sec- ond quarter with a 3-pointer from the head of the circle as time expired. Breathitt led 42- 18 and the rout was on. Wolfe came out of the break looking like a different team led by Denniston’s 10 points, but Hamilton kept the Bobcats on pace with two 3-pointers to go along with two other bas- kets for 10 third-quarter points, and Noble was perfect at the charity stripe going six-for- six. Trent also added a couple of nifty baskets, as Breathitt equaled Wolfe’s third-quarter comeback attempt. Breathtitt led 66-42 going to the final frame. Breathitt got a balanced at- tack in the fourth quarter with all five starters getting in the scoring column, led by Trent’s eight points, and Jordan Bel- lamy’s four points. Freshman Luke Chaney came off the bench to put in four points, and Tyler Hensley added a free- throw in the late going. Wolfe closed the gap some- what against Breathitt’s bench in the final minutes, but the damage was already done. The Bobcats claimed the district championship for the second time in as many years and will advance to play Estill County in the opening round game of the 14th Regional Tourna- ment tonight, Thursday, March 1. Wolfe also advances to the regional tournament and went against giant-killer Buckhorn Wednesday evening in the first game. BREATHITT (22-5) WOLFE (13-13) B.
