FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK….FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK….FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK….FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK….
We Live in Exciting Times!
Unless you have been living under a rock, you have no doubt heard the
joyous news that our very own Michael Curry, bishop of the diocese of
North Carolina, has been elected the next Presiding Bishop of the The
Episcopal Church. This election took place June 27th in Salt Lake City
during the 78th General Convention of The Episcopal Church. Bishop
Curry will conclude his time with us in North Carolina in October and will
be officially “seated” as Presiding Bishop at the National Cathedral in
Washington, D.C. during the Sunday noon Eucharist on November 1st.
While we are all abuzz with pride and excitement, we are also no doubt
anxious and curious about what happens next. We have been blessed to
have Bishop Curry for the last 15 years, and everyone is eager to have the
momentum created by his leadership continue and grow. As Bishop
Suffragan Anne Hodges-Copple told the clergy of the diocese, “Our job is
not just to hold the fort but to expand the kingdom….We’re not stopping
the Galilee Initiative.” To this end, the Standing Committee has decided to
appoint Bishop Anne the bishop pro tem of the diocese, which makes her
the ecclesiastical authority of the diocese until a new diocesan bishop is
elected. Another bishop (probably retired) will come in to offer assistance
during the interim time, as well.
In the fall the Standing Committee will develop the timeline for electing our
next diocesan bishop, and this timeline will be announced at Diocesan
Convention in November.
If you are not already receiving the Please Note emails on Wednesdays, I
strongly encourage you to sign up for them. Last week’s has more
information on this transition time:

Our next scheduled bishop’s visitation here at St. Clement’s will be Sunday,
January 17, 2016 (MLK weekend). We will have this yet unnamed assisting
bishop with us. Save the date!
And, in case you are wondering about the seating at the National Cathedral
on November 1st, this is a ticketed event, and I’m afraid tickets are going to
be hard to come by. As a deputy to General Convention, I have been given
ONE ticket. Information about the possibility of other tickets will be
forthcoming from the national church. (Bishop Curry is not in charge of
this, and he is waiting for instructions like the rest of us!)
Please join me in sending up happy prayers of thanksgiving for Bishop
Curry, his witness to the faith, and the privilege it has been to have him in
our diocese! - Mother Jamie+

DC YOUTH TRIPDC YOUTH TRIPDC YOUTH TRIPDC YOUTH TRIP
By Kirsten Russ
Six wonderful youth, high schoolers Andrew Munster and Alec and Ryan Weide, along with middle schoolers
Brian Rachal, Breiana Six and Ian Weide, traveled to Washington, DC, to tour and to begin mission work from
a new perspective. My brother, Gerhard Pilcher, presented a view of mission work that begins by establishing
personal relationships in our community in order the share the Good News. The goal is to be a local disciple.
We heard the message at the Jefferson Memorial and then walked to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
to reflect. The students will begin local mission work by volunteering at the Davie Animal Shelter (August 11th),
for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC (Aug 8th), and by assisting teachers at Morgan Elementary
as they begin a new school year (one morning during the week of Aug 17 – 21).
While in DC, youth enjoyed seeing most of the memorials on the mall Friday night, then touring Smithsonian
Museums on Saturday. The service at the National Cathedral on Sunday was held at a new time and we were
able to join for communion and to hear the amazing organ music. After observation of our founding documents
at the National Archives and the flag that inspired the Star Spangled Banner at the National Museum of Ameri-
can History, we traveled to Arlington Cemetery to view the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and to see the
changing of the guard. Exhausted, yet appreciative of our country’s promise for freedom, we returned to St.
Clement’s to begin our efforts to minister in this area.
Staying at the campground allowed for the small bits of rest that were available in such a busy schedule and for
two campfires and cooking of marshmallows for S’Mores.
Liz Weide and I would like to thank the parents who sent food and trusted us with their kids, for the prayers
from the St. Clement’s community and for the support of our youth. I believe the great weather (in the 80s and
breezy?, true!!!), our successful transportation on the subway and buses and cars, our great camp cabins, and our
short lines were evidence of the power of prayer from the congregation. We appreciate everything.

PSALM 148PSALM 148PSALM 148PSALM 148
Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host!
Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for he commanded and they were created.
He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds,
which cannot be passed.
Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command!
Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars!
Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds!
Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth!
Young men and women alike, old and young together!
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven.
He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful,
for the people of Israel who are close to him.
Praise the Lord!
SERVING CHRIST BY CARING FOR GOD’S CREATIONSERVING CHRIST BY CARING FOR GOD’S CREATIONSERVING CHRIST BY CARING FOR GOD’S CREATIONSERVING CHRIST BY CARING FOR GOD’S CREATION
Caring for the Creation by people of faith should come naturally as a fundamental part of their calling to serve
Christ and the global community. Numerous places within Scripture describe God’s calling to us to be keepers
of His Creation. The Creation is sacred not only because ultimately it was divinely produce an given (Genesis 1
& 2) but because the Divine lived bodily upon the Earth, that is, through the Incarnation , in God’s Son Jesus
Christ (John 1). In the Psalms it is said that the universe reveals the glory and handiwork of God. Seeing the col-
ors within a meadow of spring wildflowers or hearing the shimmering call of a bird tell us this.
If we say God is Crater and giver of every good gift, the provider of Earth’s bounty, then we should respect and
care for the gift given us. When someone gives us a special gift, our response is to cherish it and thank the giver,
thereby returning the love offered by the giver god has given us the bounty of the earth for our benefit and joy
and His only Son to redeem us from our failings, to give us precious new life. It seems appropriate that we thank
our Creator and serve His Son by caring for the good gift of the Earth and to share the joy o forgiveness with
those around us. Indeed we are called to love God in every way by expressing gratitude for everything given as
blessing to us.
Christ taught us that everyone is our neighbor. Our neighbor is not only the person in the pew next to us, not
only the family across the street, but every human and every creature on this Earth. Caring for the Earth is caring
for your neighbor. We must remember our neighbors (human and creature) as we use our resources. Loving our
neighbor means caring for our Earth as well.
Serving Christ and our world community as we are called to do includes being reverent and protective of the
Earth. We all are called to be keepers of the Creation. Care for the Earth and you will show your love for God
and for your neighbor.

My German cousin’s 14-year-old daughter, Lea, is working
with a reputable company to find a host family, attached to a
public school, who would be willing to host Lea. If you are
interested in learning more about possibly hosting Lea for the
school year, please contact Kirsten Russ.
