our slogan “sign of solutions” is fully integrated in daily life within royal wagenborg. No matter what logistical problem or challenge, we can provide a solution with our state of the art equipment and available experience and knowledge of over 3,000 employees!

wagenborg Projects & Logistics (wPL) started back in 1998 as a service provider for project freights within wagenborg shipping. early 2012, we decided to reposition wPL as a separate division within royal wagenborg. with this move we ensure that our customers benefit most of our logistic solutions. the primary task of wPL is to combine all available knowledge and logistic assets from all wagenborg divisions for providing door-to-door solutions for our customers.

this philosophy is also the strength of royal wagenborg. thanks to the various markets and countries we are active in, we have a lot of knowledge and experience to offer for our customers. combining this with our state of the art equipment we are able to provide tailor-made logistic solutions for our customers. in this edition of the wagenborg times this will be illustrated. All the projects and activities are results of our cooperation, entrepreneurship and solution minded way of working.

that is why we think “sign of solutions” became more than just a slogan: it is a promise to our customers!

wagenborg Projects & Logistics recently is

positioned as a separate division within royal

wagenborg. what started in 1998 as the

service-provider for project freights under

the flag of the wagenborg shipping division,

now broadens the logistical scope offering

supply chain management and Project freight

forwarding solutions. this new positioning is

reflected in our vision. At wagenborg Projects

& Logistics we offer complete logistical solutions

and solve even the toughest transport challenges

by understanding our customers and their total

supply chain.

Project Freight Forwardingthe first service entails the transport of project cargo and oversized

equipment. the primary task is to provide door-to-door solutions

for project freights, where often one or more divisions of royal

wagenborg are involved. unlike all the other wagenborg divisions

that provide logistic solutions, wPL does not possess assets; it

acts on behalf of more divisions and makes use of wagenborg

resources or those of reliable partners. in addition, worldwide

transport of project cargo can be realized by making quick

and efficient links between wagenborg’s widespread own

resources and external partners, making the project freight

forwarding activities of wPL efficient, flexible, and reliable.

understanding our clients is important, therefore we focus on

the following industries within the project freight forwarding

services: oil & gas, energy, technology and construction &

engineering. wagenborg has many years of experience in

these industries and therefore is able to provide our clients

with the most suitable solution.

Supply Chain ManagementBesides the project related cargo, the new service of wPL is

offering total supply chain management (scm) solutions. with

scm we mean managing the goods of the total supply chain

from assembly to the end destination, since the transport of

goods does not just stop in each port or warehouse. therefore

wPL integrates the services on both land and water to offer

our clients a full package of logistic services with wagenborg’s

own resources and skilled and experienced people or via

a reliable partner of wagenborg. the central idea behind

scm is to offer existing and potential clients more transport

solutions than solely the current activities of wagenborg

perform. this will result in a more efficient flow of transporting

goods. with the growing focus on forwarding activities, wPL

can design the perfect mix between our own assets and that of

our partners, making the transport the most cost efficient and

reliable for our customers. the service can best be described

by the figure below. wPL combines the intermodal solutions

(road & rail transport), together with sea freight, warehousing,

stevedoring and customs and insurance. thereby focusing on

our selected industries: Automotive, retail, forest Products,

industrial Products and hygiene Products.

Supply Chain Management WPLwith the new strategy and positioning of wagenborg Projects

& Logistics we not only combine the strength of the wagenborg

divisions but also our knowledge for every transport. in other

words: for every project, freight or transport you only need

one point of contact: wagenborg Projects and Logistics.

Page 7: Times 2012

even though the economic climate is not always

particularly favourable, this does not stop

wagenborg from continuously investing in

expanding and modernising its equipment. we

think it is important to continuously renew and

improve our equipment, so we can constantly

give an adequate logistic answer to the high

quality and safety standards of ourselves and

our customers. here below is a brief review of

the latest developments in this area.

Shallow water ice breaking multi-purpose support vessels for Wagenborg Kazakhstanroyal wagenborg is currently constructing at their group yard royal

Niestern sander in delfzijl a pair of new ice breaking multi-purpose

support vessels, called sanaborg and serkeborg.. imsv sanaborg has

recently been launched.

the vessels are based on a platform design intended for supply

and support operation for the offshore oil and gas industry in harsh

weather and shallow ice-infested waters. conditions similar to those

wagenborg Kazakhstan B.v. encounters in the North-caspian sea.

the two new vessels are a further development based on the icebreaking

tug Armanborg and the icebreaking supply vessels Arcticaborg and

Antarcticaborg, which have been operating successfully for more than

13 years in the Kashagan project in the Northern caspian waters.

the imsv are developed by wagenborg in close co-operation

with royal Niestern sander and the finnish companies Aker Arctic

and wärtsilä. the most important elements in this design are the

icebreaking capacities, the propulsion installation, the sailing in gas

clouds (h2s) and the cargo carrying capability at a limited draft.

the ‘sanaborg and ‘serkeborg’ will be delivered in july and August

2012.

23,000 tons ‘reggeborg’ and ‘reestborg’ for Wagenborg Shippingthe contract for the construction of a series of ice reinforced and nozzle

equipped 23,000 dwt dry cargo ships was signed in december 2010.

these are going to be the biggest ships ever built for wagenborg. the first

two ships of this series will be named ‘reestborg’ and ‘reggeborg’ and they

will be delivered at the beginning of 2013 and 2014.

expansion transport fleet Wagenborg nedlift

wagenborg Nedlift has expanded its vehicle park with two pcs. 7-axle semi-

low loaders made by Nooteboom, fitted with the patented Nooteboom mco-

Px system. these gamma low loaders are characterised by their versatility in

combination with an high load capacity. wagenborg Nedlift possesses two

identical semi-low loaders from this series.

together with Nooteboom, wagenborg Nedlift developed a concept that

helps to improve the safety, stability and ergonomics. the trailers are equipped

with all kinds of novelties in this field: a load floor with many possibilities,

(heavy) retaining stanchions and (heavy) recessed fastening eyelets.

‘big boy’ for Wagenborg nedlift

wagenborg Nedlift has recently added a new 500 ton mobile crane (type

demag Ac500/2) to its fleet. this new, modern equipped machine satisfies

the increasing demand from the market for the deployment of equipment with

a bigger hoisting capacity. the crane is equipped with a so-called Y-guy. this

can be used to raise the mast both sideways and backwards which facilitates

a higher hoisting capacity.

the crane was recently taken into service in a celebratory manner at museum

railway stAr in stadskanaal (NL) where an historic steam engine was turned

around using the new crane. the hoisting operation was carried out under

the watchful eyes of the management and customers of wagenborg Nedlift

and museum railway stAr.

‘rottum’ and ‘Monnik’ given a facelift

the ferry boats ‘rottum’ and ‘monnik’, which are used by wagenborg

Passenger services for the ferry services from Lauwersoog to schiermonnikoog,

have been given a facelift.

due to the age of the ships (about 25 years old), two options were researched:

replacement or renovation. research revealed the mechanical condition of

both ferry boats was still good. “Nevertheless, renovation was necessary in

order to be able to respond better to current demands”, according to wPd

managing director ger van Langen.

in a technical sense, the ships are completely renovated. the double hull is

replaced with another type of construction and the engine room has been

fitted with new, more efficient engines. And last but not least, a completely

new navigation bridge was installed.

Another major change concerns the layout of the ships. A renewal of

the salons and buffet, the addition of a shop, relocation of toilets, a new

air conditioning system and a different layout of the car deck makes the

ferryboats a new experience for the passengers.

“Reduce construction time on site to the minimum”.

with this sentence the initial discussion was

started in 2009. how to transport a 60 meter

vent stack from the client’s workshop to the new

power plant in germany?

in the past several large columns had been transported by wagenborg

from the manufacturer to various locations. this time the project

concerned a more fragile chimney instead of a massive reactor. two

main components could be transported. the characteristics of these

components are:

- vent stack lower section 42.750 x 7.650 x 7.650 mm = 140 tons

- vent stack upper section 24.200 x 7.600 x 7.600 mm = 60 tons

on sunday 16 october 2011 the two vent stack sections were

transported from the clients workshop in flechum, germany, to the

nearest inland port in meppen. the shortest distance between these

two villages is 22 kilometres, but due to the exceptional dimensions the

transport had to make a detour of almost 60 kilometres.

the complete transport route from flechum to meppen was prepared for

these giants. in an earlier stage, prior to the transport, approximately

OL3Project oL 3 is being built at the western end of the olkiluoto

island, finland, next to the oL1 and oL2 units. oL3

will be equipped with an ePr type reactor (european

Pressurized water reactor), and the net electrical output

of the unit will be approximately 1,600 mw. commercial

operation is expected to start in 2014. once finished,

oL3 will provide permanent employment for 150 to

200 people, and about 1,000 additional people will be

employed during construction phase.

Page 11: Times 2012

11

40 kilometres of tree pruning was necessary. with the transport three

high-voltage cables had to be switched off and 10 telephone cables

had to be removed. during the transport a crew of eight mechanics

of wagenborg were in action on the transport route to remove road

signs, turn traffic lights, spread out steel plates and of course restore

everything in its original situation.

After a drive of 8 hours the transport arrived safely at the inland port

of meppen.

from meppen to delfzijl (Netherlands) the two sections were transported

by two inland vessels. At the wagenborg terminal in delfzijl two 400

tons mobile cranes were put on to perform the transhipment of the

vent stack into a seagoing vessel. for this sea freight wagenborg

had positioned one of its own 6000 dwt multipurpose dry cargo

carriers. together with the two sections, the transport equipment for

the on-carriage in finland was also loaded into the hold of the vessel.

After lashing and securing of the cargo mv “cathy jo” could sail to

olkiluoto, finland.

At the jetty of the oL3 Power Plant in olkiluoto, the two vent stack

sections were lifted from the seagoing vessel onto supports on the

jetty. the sections were transported one by one from the jetty to the

construction site with sPmts (self Propelled modular transporters). for

the offloading, tailing and positioning a 600 tons crawler crane and

a 500 tons mobile crane had been rigged directly in front of the main

building of the power plant and lifting works were finished right on

schedule.

A smooth operation, for which we received a nice message from our

customer: “it was a pleasure working with the wagenborg team and

we look forward to do future projects with you!” of course, we can

agree with this. in next editions of times, we will surely report again

about special projects for this special client.

for more than 45 years, wagenborg has moved

land rigs throughout europe. this specialist

type of work is done for a large number of

renowned drilling contractors. At wagenborg,

these activities are mainly performed by

wagenborg foxdrill (assembly, disassembly and

project management) and wagenborg Nedlift

(transport, cranes and logistics management).

in case of transport of drilling rigs over sea the

resources and knowledge of both wagenborg

shipping and wagenborg Projects & Logistics

are used.

Safety, quality and efficiencyin fact rig moves like these are a necessary evil for drilling contractors

as the rigs are non productive during the move and no revenues are

generated. therefore the downtime has to be reduced to a minimum.

in close co-operation with the customer, wagenborg foxdrill and

wagenborg Nedlift are able to adapt their work methods to each

particular situation so that drilling installations can be disassembled,

transported, reassembled and recommissioned on the new site in the

shortest possible time. of course, safety and quality play a leading role

in this. this concept offers many advantages for the drilling contractors.

“it is also very important for them to know that wagenborg has a

large number of own resources which ensures a high service standard

during the major steps of the rig move process”, according to Patrick

mollink, general manager of wagenborg foxdrill.

Design optimisation“the heaviest parts of a drilling installation are usually the mud pumps

and the drawworks, which often weigh between 40 to 70 tons each.

however, the crucial factor during the transport is often not the weight

but the width of the parts. these days more and more components of

the rigs are designed with a maximum width of three metres. As a

result of this fewer transport permits are required. in the past design

and construction of drilling installations was mainly focussed on the

actual drilling process and less on the transport. As the reduction of

down time of rigs is getting more important, the drilling contractors

are using more effort in the design phase to ensure easier assembly/

disassembly, higher safety standards and more efficient transports. As

a result of this ever components of the installations are now included

in standard containers, which ensures that they are easier to install

and to transport. As a result of this modern drilling installations can be

moved much more efficiently, reductions up to 50% have been made

compared to conventional ones. Naturally, this has a positive financial

effect, both for our customers and for their principals too”, says erik

maassen van den Brink, manager Bu transport at wagenborg Nedlift.

As a part of the wagenborg offshore division, wagenborg oilfield

services is fully operational in Noyabrsk, siberia. from its new head

office in Noyabyrsk, wagenborg oilfield services (wos) provides

quality services and equipment to the oil & gas industry in russia.

royal wagenborg has customers and projects

in all parts of the world. to keep the lines of

communication short to our customers on the

local markets, royal wagenborg has operating

companies throughout europe, North America,

the middle east and Asia.

Last year we started more local branche offices

and joint verntures in rusland (siberia, st.

from collett’s offices in goole and halifax, business opportunities for

the newly cooperating companies will be explored.

Wagenborg Saint Petersburg Ltd. sometimes it is not about strategic planning, but about new opportunities

and how they appear. just like wagenborg saint Petersburg Ltd.

After more than twenty years of experience as an independent

crewing agent, operating for various clients, vladimir Kolesnikov was

convinced that business development in the saint Petersburg area

could best be implemented with the cooperation of a well-known firm

or brand. for many years wagenborg shipping has had a strong

presence in the Port of saint Petersburg. vladimir shared his ideas

with wagenborg.the rest is history and wagenborg saint Petersburg

Ltd. is a fact now.

supported by the brand name of wagenborg, the company’s goal is

to increase the recruited and selected volume of professional seafarer

for the existing clients, wagenborg shipping included.

in the near future, wagenborg saint Petersburg will be a true extension

of wagenborg shipping and be active in the areas of crewing,

chartering, brokerage and agency activities.

Wagenborg goes Middle eastthe middle east region fits wagenborg services like a warm blanket.

full with oil and gas and being a transport hub between Asia and

europe and the Americas, this region is still developing very rapidly.

services like shipping, freight forwarding, but also complex logistic

projects for oil companies and oilfield services, are the range of

activities wagenborg likes to spread in this region as well.

After scouting for more than one year, wagenborg decided to set

up a free zone company in dubai, wagenborg middle east, and

depending on the projects awarded, bases may be started in Abu

dhabi, southern iraq, Qatar and oman. visited prospect and existing

clients welcome the initiative of wagenborg very much! Quality and

solving client’s challenges are what is expected to be delivered!

edwin Zwart, who carried out the scouting work, will be the director

of the new company.

Wagenborg goes Far eastAs of february this year, our two trainees sytse sijperda and Paul

Bakker are stationed in china to conduct a field research for royal

wagenborg. Based in the representative office of wagenborg shipping

in shanghai, they will investigate potential business opportunities for

royal wagenborg. reining is seeking collaboration opportunities with

chinese partners for import logistics into europe. for wagenborg

Projects & Logistics and wagenborg shipping the two trainees will

investigate the potential in the Asian market.

Wagenborg ToWage: exTraorDInary FrIenDS In neeDwhere a ship is in difficulties, wagenborg towage is close at hand. with its experience and

floating equipment for both inland waterways, coastal waters, harbours and sea, wagenborg

towage guarantees rapid and efficient salvage operations. the salvage specialists have recently

executed interesting projects.

Page 18: Times 2012

18

Salvage ‘Janine’In September 2011, the cargo ship ‘Janine’, loaded with 1,000

tons of iron ore, got stuck sideways in the river Hunte near the

German town of Huntebrück. At the time of the incident it was

high tide. As the water level dropped, the ship started to sag,

so a salvage operation was necessary and the experts from

Wagenborg Towage were called in. The floating gantry ‘Triton’,

the barge ‘Wagenborg Barge 3’ and the tugboats ‘Gyas’ and

‘Johanna C’ were used during the operation.

Apart from a couple of cracks, the hold of the ‘Janine’ turned

out to be still intact. After these had been sealed more or less,

the pumps were able to do their work. Just one hour later, 80%

of the hold was empty. The last pieces of cargo were removed

professionally from the hold, after which the ship had sufficient

floating capacity to lie in the water on her own. Then they had

to wait for the rising tide so that the ‘Janine’ could be turned

around before she was moored. Within 24 hours (!), the Hunte

was navigable for other shipping traffic once again.

‘Jonas’ Less than a month after salvaging the Janine, the crew of

Wagenborg Towage had to be called up in Amsterdam.

The 86 metres long ‘Jonas’ broke during the loading of calcium

fluoride at the OBA Bulk Terminal in the Western Harbour Area in

Amsterdam and sank to a depth of 16 metres. When she broke,

the ‘Jonas’ already had 700 of the 1100 tons to be loaded in the

hold. After inspections by divers, belts were placed

under the Jonas and a chain saw was used to cut the wreck in two

in just 7 (!) minutes. After this the rest of the cargo was removed,

the engine room was pumped empty and then the Triton was used

to hoist the stern on to a barge.

Salvage operation dry dock SluiskilJust one month later, the salvage combination Wagenborg

Towage together with DUC Diving was awarded with another

project in Sluiskil (Zeeland, NL). The combination worked together

to salvage a sunken dry dock. The dock, with dimensions of 96 x

16.5 metres, had sunk in the harbour of the yard to a depth of 9

metres after suffering a technical defect.

An extensive inspection by divers revealed that the dock was

seriously damaged. The salvage team repaired the cracks

under water. Using various salvaging equipment belonging to

Wagenborg, such as ten large salvaging pumps and airbags to

assist the air chambers in the dock itself, the dock was raised to

the surface again.

the first fully large-scale municipal

german utility company trianel

windkraftwerk Borkum is carrying

out the project at a cost of €1bn.

the venture is expected to generate

1,200gwh annually to power nearly

250,000 households.

ihc hydrohammer is a specialist in offshore pile

driving hammers. wPL is the preferred partner

for the mobilization of these giants. in october

2011 wPL was awarded by ihc with another

logistical challenge: the transport of a hydraulic

pile driving hammer s-1200, weighing 196 tons,

from Kinderdijk to the eems harbour. various

divisions of wagenborg came into action for this

transport.

the pile driving hammers, which are able to drive piles into the

ground both above and below water, were lifted by wagenborg

Nedlift using a hydraulic gantry system on to a 10-axle modular

trailer. After transport to the harbour two 500 tons mobile cranes from

wagenborg Nedlift hoisted the giant including additional equipment

on to wagenborg barge 3. After this the barge was shipped to the

eems harbour by tugboat ‘waterpoort’.

the heavy lift vessel ‘goliath’ was already in position to lift the cargo

on board using her deck cranes. then the goliath set sail to the

offshore wind farm Borkum west ii (germany) where the hydraulic

piling hammer installed foundations for wind turbines.

Page 22: Times 2012

during the past four years, wagenborg Nedlift has been busy with rather extraordinary business:

logistics of two, huge onshore gas pipelines across germany – oPAL and NeL – with huge diameters

and distances, crossing germany from the north to the southern and western ‘Bundesländer’ in order

to supply the country with russian gas coming from the Nord stream gas Pipeline. wagenborg

Nedlift played a key-role in the logistics operations.

22

PIPeLIne LogISTICS

born to Delivermeint obbo schuiling, wagenborg Nedlift’s project manager for

both oPAL and NeL project, relates, “the project size of oPAL was

so huge and planning schedule at the pipe production facility so tight,

that special requirements arose regarding the logistics of the pipes.

right from the start, we were involved in developing a logistics process

that was feasible and efficient, in close co-operation with all parties

involved.” “A construction period of 1.5 years seems quite long, but

taking into account that 26,908 pipes have to be delivered in

approximately 340 working days with one pipe per truckload,

means that 80 loads need to be transported each day. every hour 10

trucks had to be loaded and offloaded! combined with the fact that

distances from loading location [railway stations along the route] to

the construction sites varied from 10 to 60 kilometers, this made the

project a true challenge for a logistics service provider. our team of

young eager logistics professionals and very experienced operations

managers managed to deal with all those challenges,” schuiling

explains.

Full Logistics Chain Controlin order to be able to control the full logistics chain, wagenborg

Nedlift was responsible for the entire logistics chain from the railway

station up to the storage areas along the construction route. About 25

wagenborg Nedlift employees were continuously involved in a range

of activities, including:

- supply of cranes for transshipment from waggon onto truck.

- site supervisor at loading location and unloading location.

- supply of sufficient certified trucks and trailers

- Quality control and administration on transported pipeline pieces.

- execution of route surveys and arranging road transport permits

- Project management and engineering.

Cross-border TeamworkAlthough the countries are neighbours, there are quite some cultural

differences between the german and dutch peoples. working on such

a project together, this can be a recipe for miscommunication. however,

schuiling could turn it into an advantage. “german authorities were

more than willing to assist with required permits and arrangements to

keep the project going” he says. “they were happily surprised by our

approach and practical way of communication and solving problems.”

“Personally, i had the time of my life with these projects,” schuiling

concludes. “i really enjoyed working with such a variety of people from

our own company, our customers, suppliers involved and local people.

An interesting and challenging time that gave me a lot of pleasure.

Safe operation of hatch cover cranes on boardEvery day, more than 140 hatch cover cranes are used on board the Wagenborg fleet. These cranes are used to handle hatch covers and tween decks. Working with these hatch cover cranes requires special attention of crew and officers. In order to safely operate the hatch cover crane, strict safety procedures are applicable. Wagenborg has made a safety procedure instruction DVD to instruct its own ship crews, vessels agencies and training & education centres. This video can also be watched at http://www.youtube.com/royalwagenborg

Wagenborg wins eSTa award 2012! At the annual meeting of estA (the european Association of heavy

transport and Lifting companies) on April 19th in Paris, wagenborg

Nedlift won the estA Award in the category ‘lifting jobs up to 120

tons’.the prizewinning job was executed in june 2011. in order to

supply the new built magnum Powerplant in eemshaven with gas,

a new gas pipeline had to be constructed from gasunie spijk gas

network up to the new power plant. this gas pipeline crosses the one

and only main road to eemshaven industrial park. it was unacceptable

that during construction works on the gas pipeline, this road would be

blocked. therefore, the main contractor chose for a horizontal drilling

operation underneath the main road. wagenborg Nedlift took care

of handling the 24 inch pipeline with a length of 400 meters (!) and

a gross weight of 77 tonnes during drilling operation.Keeping the

pipeline in a perfect entry angle at the front of the drilling hole without

overloading one or more of the eight cranes used on this job was a

major challenge. this challenge was met by accurate height measuring

and flawless communications. “A fine piece of co-operation within

our project team”, says managing director ton Klijn, who was more

than happy to receive the award. “working closely together on both

engineering, project management and operational level, offering our

customer a unique and safe solution: this exactly is our strong point

at wagenborg”.

Sailing safelyBeing a sailor is a dream for many people. however, at sea you have

to rely on yourself and your fellow sailors. A ship’s crew must therefore

get sufficient training about safety. for wagenborg, this goes beyond

legally obliged training and education.

„Life-long learning at sea”, is how training & education manager

maarten ten wolde of wagenborg shipping describes that. “of

course, wagenborg only uses certified employees, but experience

shows that training courses in different countries and continents

have different levels. All our seafarers possess the stcw certificate,

an international agreement about the minimum requirements that

seafarers on merchant vessels have to have to satisfy with regard to

training, certification and watch duties”, says ten wolde. “But you can

still see differences in the interpretation of the standard, and that’s why

we do more than the mandatory requirements. we have got our own

training policy and our partner g4s works on this together with us

and is in charge of the implementation.” ten wolde continues: “that

works very independently. our captains know precisely when they

have to do a mandatory training. in such a case they can contact

g4s directly and plan their training times. registrations for the extra

training courses are done via me. this works really well: due to the

fact that g4s works very independently i only need to monitor from

a distance whether everything is going well. that saves a lot of time.”

Not only ten wolde is enthusiastic about the training courses: “i

recently received a complimentary mail from a captain: he was very

satisfied with the medical care training. A mail like that lets you know

what you’re doing it for.”

in the otherwise so quiet and

picturesque village of eefde,

there’s been lots of hustle and

bustle going on during the

winter of 2012. the lock in the

twente canal near the village

even became breaking news

for a while. due to an, as yet,

unknown cause, a lock gate

weighing 90 tons fell down

on 3 january, 2012, thereby

blocking the only access from

the ijssel to the twente canal.

more than 40 inland waterway

ships were no longer able to

leave the twente canal. A

major problem therefore for

the inland waterway traffic

and the masters in the twente

region, who could no longer

transport their freight.

The eeFDe LoCK

27

the situation demanded a rapid solution. in co-operation with

the ministry of water management and jansen venneboer,

main contractor for the repair works, wagenborg Nedlift

developed a method to temporarily operate the lock.

he temporary lifting construction consisted of two parts: a 400

tons crawler crane with superlift attachment and a securing

device. As the repairing works in the lock building needed to

go on full-time the securing device could not be assembled in

the building itself. wagenborg Nedlift designed a so called

gantry around the building and assembled the securing device

on top of it. once the gate had been lifted it was secured by

means of 2 hydraulic securing pins. if anything unforeseen

would happen with the crane, the gate would always be

secured. ships could now safely pass the gate.

several components had to fabricated for the job, they all

needed to be tested and certified. however the design,

engineering and assembly of the crane and gantry took 3

weeks only. more than 50 heavy transport trucks were needed

to deliver the equipment required. in the meantime, there was

a severe frost and the twente canal also froze over. just when

the solution was so close, the stranded ships were threatened

to become frozen in… the ministry of water management

was soon able to mobilise an ice breaker and wagenborg

towage assisted with a second one. As a result, the shipping

route in the twente canal soon became navigable again.

By the end of march, the original lock construction was

repaired so normal operation could start again. the peace

and quietness returned to the picturesque eefde…

WMSreining expanded the use of their wms in all warehouses (Netherlands and

hungary). this has improved the efficiency of the daily operation significantly.

Next to that, reining can now offer the same functionality and service all their

customers. together with the implementation of the wms, reining restructured part

of their warehouse in Kolham by building racks to increase the storage volume.

this was highly needed because of the rapid growth in customer base and storage

volumes.

new customersin 2011 and 2012 reining welcomed a large number of new customers. they

started to supply logistic services to, amongst others, PPg, Nikecell, tiktak/

segafredo, flint ink, Avebe and crocs. the services differ from basic in- and

outbound processes to more complex services like bagging fiber glass for PPg.

for the bagging, reining developed a new machine from scratch, together with the

customer and a machine builder. the bagging machine is very accurate and it fills

20 Kg bags with fiber glass from big bags. the allowed deviation is very small

and should not exceed 0,2%.

from the end of 2011 reining is managing the logistics operation of flint ink. flint

is a producer of a wide array of inks that are used in the printing business. the

finished products are transported to the reining warehouse and stored until they’re

transported to the flint customers in europe.

reining moved to a new office in Budapest last year. this new location also offers

great possibilities for warehousing activities. immediately after opening the new

office we were able to fill up the warehouse with goods of Nikecell. A insulation

producing company from hungary. the warehousing possibilities in hungary

enlarged the service opportunities for reining in eastern-europe.

for crocs, reining organises the import of containers from china. After unloading

the containers the goods are sorted, palletised and distributed through europe.

Next to that, reining distributes promotional materials to the shops.

the past two years have been

very successful for reining

warehousing. Besides being

the preferred supplier for the

warehousing operation of scA,

we managed to welcome new

customers and implement new

activities and concepts.

A few years ago, a fabrication shop for the production

of bicycle ambulances started up in the poverty-stricken

African country malawi. in only a short period of time,

the shop became an important supplier of transport

equipment in the southern part of the country named

sakaramenta. Besides bicycle ambulances, also other

transport equipment is fabricated, such as transport

vehicles for water and milk, a mobile mini-store

and a waste disposal vehicle. About 17 people find

employment at the fabrication shop.

during the past three years, about 900 bicycle

ambulances have been produced in the Blantyre shop.

Approximately 2.500 small villages do have access

to medical transport now. the dutch foundation

transport4transport takes care of financing the major

part of the bicycle ambulances. revenues of the

foundation are mainly generated by wagenborg store.

on thursday 15 march,

wagenborg Passenger services

launched the new company

uniform and a new casual clothing

brand with a marine heritage:

‘1898’. Both collections have been

designed by monique collignon.

the launching of the two collections

took place at a unique location: the

ferry boat ‘oerd’ was transformed

into a floating catwalk especially

for this occasion.

the unique co-operation between wagenborg

Passenger services and monique collignon came

about as a result of the ambition to underline

the provision of service to the passengers both

on board and in the terminals and to give the

employees a unique company outfit. wagenborg

Passenger services places a lot of emphasis on

synergy of tourism, culture, nature and commercial

services with initiatives such as the wagenborg

Plaza in holwerd and Lauwersoog, a departure

terminal with shops and exhibition area where the

passengers can already start their holidays with

high quality services and experience.

monique collignon has already designed haute

couture for more than 14 years now and in

december 2011 she designed the mc couture

Light collection: a unique and trendy initiative

based on the vision of making design available for

all women. ‘1898’ was a very special assignment

for monique because of her long-standing love

of the wadden islands. the tough and rugged

character of the islands together with the maritime

influences of the shipping company formed the

inspiration for both the company uniform and also

the ‘1898’ label.
