Became American possession on July 11, 1776.

Michigan Territory created in 1805.

Detroit is appointed seat of Government. William Hull appointed first Governor of

Michigan territory. Soon after, Detroit was destroyed by fire.

Detroit/Ft. Mackinac are surrendered to British in War of 1812.

Territorial Capital is built in Detroit in 1828.

Capital is built for $24,500.

In 1837, Michigan is admitted to the Union as the 26th state.

Between 1861-1865 over 90,000 MI men served during Civil War.

New state capital is dedicated in Lansing on1879.

Lansing state capital cost $1,510,130.

Mackinac Island is named 1st state park in 1895.

The Apple Blossom is named state flower in 1897.

Olds Motor Company in Detroit names the 1st factory in America for automobiles in 1899.

Ford Motor Company is established in Detroit in 1903.

Ford introduces the Ford Model T in 1908.

Shortly after General Motors is created that same year.

First primary election is held in 1910.

Detroit is known as the “city of champions” because of all their developing pro sports teams.

G. Mennen Williams is elected governor in 1948.

Michigan’s longest serving governor Served 6 terms, totaling 14 years.

White Pine is adopted as the tree of Michigan in 1955.

Mackinac Bridge is completed in 1957.

Mackinac Bridge is made to unite the two peninsula's.

Michigan native Gerald R. Ford becomes 38th president of the U.S. in 1974.

Trout becomes official state fish in 1988.

MODERN DAY MICHIGAN Detroit celebrates tercentennial in

2001. Jennifer Granholm is elected 1st

female governor in 2002. In 2009, Michigan reached highest

unemployment rate in the U.S. Rick Snyder becomes 48th Governor

of Michigan in 2011.

the world. Detroit is car capital of the world. Detroit zoo was the 1st to exhibit

cage-less animals. 4 flags have flown over MI– French,

copper in the world. More shoreline than any other state,

except Alaska. No more wolverines live in MI, though

it is called the “wolverine state.”
