How to use this book:

1. Track reading progress using the timed

reading chart provided:

a. Time students as they read each story

aloud.

b. As the student reads:

• make a note of where the student is at after ONE

MINUTE.

• circle words that are difficult to sound out/ they are unable to read (“real errors”).

• underline words they struggle to read but self-correct

know as they read, or create a second copy and track

difficult words.

An optional assessment tool is recording the accuracy rate: errors and self-corrections as a percent. This helps you to see whether a

student is reading at, below or above this reading level.

c. Write the reading time at the

bottom of each story, as well as in the chart provided. Students

can track their progress over the

course of each reading.

Percent Hard <90%

Instructional 90-94%

Independent >95%

Errors 15 + errors 8-14 errors 0-7 errors

Page 3: Timed Readings from your Favourite Stories · 1 Timed Readings from your Favourite Stories A collection of literature and comprehension questions for Kindergarten Created and Compiled

3

2. An additional assessment tool is to calculate the WPM. Write the

WPM at the bottom of each story page, as well as on the Timed Reading Chart to track progress.

For example: if the story has 36 words, and 17 are circled or underlined, the correct word “score” is 19. If the time taken to read the story was 4.34 min, translate this into seconds (4 x 60 + 34 = 274 seconds) WPM is calculated as follows: the correct words are multiplied by 60 (19 x 60 = 1140) and divided by the total reading time

3. Ask students to complete the

Reading Comprehension Questions.

Use the answer key found at the

end of this book to mark student’s answers. Write the comprehension

score at the bottom of the Q&A

page, as well as on the Timed

Reading Chart.

WORDS READ: 36 = _________ (mistakes) = _________ (correct words/ accuracy rate) ACCURACY RATE: _________ % TIME: _____ : _____ à seconds _________ WPM: correct words _________ x 60 divide by time (in seconds): _________ = _________
