Time Speed Distance: An Overview to TSD Rally

Prof. (Dr.) Parul Shah [email protected]

TSD

• T TIME

• S SPEED

• D Distance

S = D / T

T = D / S

Goal

• Be on Time at all points en-route

• Maintain Average Speed

• ALWAYS STAY ON THE CORRECT ROUTE , NEVER LOSE YOUR WAY!

It’s Rally, NOT a Race

• It’s not about speeding, its all about

“Driving At The Right Speed”

• A calculator & a Digital Clock is all that you need

• Route is a surprise

• Car with the least penalties wins

• Cars do not need any modification

• Usually run on PUBLIC roads, speeds are always within legal limit

A few terms that might come handy

• Time (T) = Distance (D) / Speed (S)

• Speed Chart

• Road Book (Tulip Chart + Speed Chart)

• Time Control (TC)

• Passage Control (PC)

• Penalties

• Odometer

Road Book

• Set of instructions to help you navigate the rally route

• Road Book comprises of: – Odometer reading since the start of rally (Total or Cumulative

distance)

– Odometer reading since the last instruction (Part or Split distance)

– Tulips which is a schematic giving you driving directions: go left, right etc

– Average Speed: Speed prescribed over a distance that competitors need to maintain

– Additional information to aid navigation, may be provided: condition of road, caution signs

Road Book Schematic (Tulips)

• Tulips are self explanatory

• Ball and Arrow arrangement:

– ball depicts your current position and

– arrow shows the direction to take

• Ball is ALWAYS at bottom of schematic

Speed Chart • Prescribed driving speeds to traverse during

the rally

– Incorporated in Road Book as a Separate sheet

From (Oddo)

To (Oddo)

Distance Average Speed (KMPH)

Time (in minutes)

0 6.0 6 – 0 = 6 21 ?

6.0 13.0 13 – 6 = 7 23

13.0 19.0 19 – 13 = 6 22

19.0 27.0 27 – 19 = 8 23

Odometer

• The distance that your car odometer shows is the “Total” distance of the Tulip-chart

• At start of rally, reset the trip meter to ZERO as per Road Book instruction

• You may need to trip it to zero whenever mentioned in the Road Book

• Most cars have two Trip meters (Trip A & Trip B) – Remember which Trip meter you are using

• MUST learn how to RESET Trip Meter before the rally

Time Card (V.V.Imp)

• Time Card tracks your rally timing performance

• Given to you at start of rally and MUST BE SUBMITTED TO A MARSHAL AT END OF RALLY

• Time Card records information such as Start Time, Check in Time at a TC, Marshal’s and Navigator’s signature etc

• Competitors must never write on the Time Card

• All competitors must carry a digital clock (HH:MM)

• Before the rally starts, this clock must be synchronized with the Marshal’s clock

Time Card

Sample

Marshal’s Card

Sample

TC • Undisclosed location on the rally route to note your time at that

point

• Identified by a red clock, placed on the left side of the road

• Marshal at TC carries a clock and notes the Check in Time on Time Card and Marshal’s Card, as the front wheel of the car passes the TC board

• Competitor must check entry in Marshal’s Register and sign against it

• Entry into TC only from one side

• Marshal is final authority on Check in Time

• Time you start after a TC (Restart time) is same as your check in time

Time Control (TC)

Time Control

TC Check-In

Passage Control (PC)

• Concept same as TC, but no “Check-In Time”

• Undisclosed location on the rally route to note your route at that point

• Identified by a red stamp, placed on the left side of the road

• Marshal at PC will put a stamp on Time Card

• Entry into PC only from one side

Passage Control

Penalties (V.V.Imp) • At end of rally, penalties are calculated from your Time Card

• Penalties are: – 1 minute for 1 minute late entry

– 10 minutes for 1 minute early entry (Speeding can cause you more penalties)

• Timing will be noted in WHOLE MINUTES only

– Whether you arrive at 10:07:00 or 10:07:59 , time noted will be 10.07 (HH:MM)

• Timing difference DO NOT CARRY FORWARD once you restart at a TC

• Further penalties: – Entry from wrong direction into Time Control

– Stopping before a Time Control or driving very slow (crawling)

– Arguing with Marshal / Breaking traffic rules

How to stay On Time ? T = (D x 60) / S

Please Note: T in mins, D in KM and S in KMPH

Example:

From (Oddo)

To (Oddo)

Distance Average Speed (KMPH)

Time (in minutes)

0 6.0 6 – 0 = 6 21 = ( 6 x 60 ) / 21 = 17 minutes

6.0 13.0 13 – 6 = 7 23

13.0 19.0 19 – 13 = 6 22

How to stay On Time ? T = (D x 60) / S

0 6.0 6 – 0 = 6 21 = ( 6 x 60 ) / 21 = 17 minutes

6.0 13.0 13 – 6 = 7 23 = (7 x 60 ) /23 = 18

13.0 19.0 19 – 13 = 6 22
