IV. Warnings - Do’sRead and understand the

owner’s manual. Payparticular attention to allsections regarding safety.

1. Always keep a firm grip onboth handles while the tines aremoving and/or the engine is running.BE AWARE!! The tines may coastafter throttle trigger is released. Makesure tines have come to a completestop and engine is off before lettinggo of the tiller.

2. Always maintain a firm footingand good balance. Do not overreachwhile operating the tiller. Before youstart to use the tiller check the workarea for obstacles that might causeyou to lose your footing, balance orcontrol of the machine.

3. Thoroughly inspect the areawhere equipment is to be used andremove all objects, which can bethrown by the machine.

4. Always keep area clear ofchildren, pets, and bystanders.

5. Always stay alert. Watch whatyou are doing and use common

sense. Do not operate unit whenfatigued.

6. Always dress properly. Do notwear loose clothing or jewelry, theymight get caught in moving parts.Use sturdy gloves. Gloves reduce thetransmission of vibration to yourhands. Prolonged exposure tovibration can cause numbness andother ailments.

7. While working, always wearsubstantial footwear and longtrousers. Do not operate theequipment when barefoot or wearingopen sandals.

8. Always wear ear and eyeprotection. Eye protection must meetANSI Z 87.1. To avoid hearingdamage, we recommend hearingprotection be worn whenever usingthe equipment.

9. To reduce fire hazard, keep theengine, and petrol/gas storage areafree of vegetative material andexcessive grease.

10. Start the engine carefully,according to the manufacturer’sinstructions and with feet well awayfrom tool(s).

11. Keep all nuts, bolts and screwstight to be sure the equipment is insafe working condition.

12. Use extreme caution whenreversing or pulling the machinetowards you.

13. Work only in daylight or goodartificial light.

14. Always be sure of your footingon slopes.

15. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

16. Always keep a safe distancebetween two or more people whenworking together.

17. Always inspect your unitbefore each use and ensure that allhandles, guards and fasteners aresecure, operating, and in place.

18. Always maintain and examineyour Tiller with care. Followmaintenance instructions given inmanual.

EMISSION CONTROL --The emission controlsystem for thisengine is EM(Engine Modification).

An important part of the safety system incorporated in this tiller arethe warning and information decals found on various parts of the tiller.

These decals must be replaced in time due to abrasion, etc. It is your responsibilityto replace these decals when they become hard to read. The location and partnumbers (P/N) of these decals are illustrated on Page 27.

Keep both hands on handles withfingers and thumbs encirclingthe handles, while tines aremoving, and engine is running.

Don’t overreach. Keep a goodfooting at all times.

Don’t run with the machine,walk.

Don’t work on excessivelysteep slopes.

Don’t attempt to clear tineswhile they are moving. Never tryto remove jammed materialbefore switching the engine offand making sure the tines havestopped completely.

Don’t allow children orincapable people to operate thistiller.

Don’t operate while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.

Don’t attempt to repair thistiller. Have repairs made by aqualified dealer or repairman.See that only original Mantisparts are used.

Always use fresh gasoline in thefuel mixture. Stale gasoline cancause damage.

Always store fuel in containersspecifically designed for thispurpose.

Always pull starter cord slowlyuntil resistance is felt. Then pullcord rapidly to avoid kickback and

prevent arm or hand injury.

Always operate engine withspark arrestor installed andoperating properly. The use of sparkarrestor mufflers is required by lawin the state of California (Section4442 of the California PublicResources Code), as well as in otherstates or municipalities. Federal

laws apply on federal lands.

Stop the engine whenever youleave the machine.

Allow the engine to cool beforestoring in any enclosure.

If the fuel tank needs to bedrained, this should be doneoutdoors.

Don’t fuel, refuel or check fuelwhile smoking, or near an openflame or other ignition source.Stop engine and be sure it is coolbefore refueling.

Don’t leave the engine runningwhile the tiller is unattended. Stopengine before putting the tillerdown or while transporting fromone place to another.

Don’t refuel, start or run thistiller indoors or in an improperlyventilated area.

Don’t run engine whenelectrical system causes spark

outside the cylinder. Duringperiodical checks of the sparkplug, keep plug a safe distancefrom cylinder to avoid burning ofevaporated fuel from cylinder.

Don’t check for spark withspark plug or plug wire removed.Use an approved tester.

Don’t crank engine with sparkplug removed unless spark plugwire is disconnected. Sparks canignite fumes.

Don’t run engine when theodor of gasoline is present orother explosive conditions exist.

Don’t operate the unit ifgasoline is spilled. Clean up spillcompletely before starting engine.

Don’t operate your tiller ifthere is an accumulation of debrisaround the muffler, and coolingfins.

Don’t touch hot mufflers,cylinders or cooling fins ascontact may cause serious burns.

Don’t change the enginegovernor setting or over speedthe engine.

Your MANTIS Tiller comes partiallyassembled. You must install only thehandlebars, the carrying handle, and thetines. This will take just a few minutes ifyou follow the directions.

First, take all items out of thecarton. But do not remove the cardboardfrom around the Tiller’s base.

The list at the right, shows the partsthat come with your tiller. Check to makesure you have them.

The bag of hardware is in the plasticbag containing the Owner’s Manual andVideo.

To assemble your MANTIS Tiller, you’llneed two 7/16” wrenches or twoadjustable wrenches. We suggest that youinstall all nuts and bolts only “fingertight” — that is, one-half to one fullturn — until you’ve completedassembly. The nuts are self locking,but you must use a wrench to tightenthem completely.

HOW TO ASSEMBLELOWER HANDLES

To identify part numbers, seepages 6 and 27.

1. Use the protectivecardboard sleeve to stabilizeyour tiller. Stand the engineassembly (#21) up.

2. Lay the handle parts withineasy reach. You’ll need one of thehandle clamps (#51) and one ofthe lower handles (#6). Note thatthe lower handles have a short legon one end. (Picture 1)

3. Fit the handle clamp alongthe outside of the short leg. Lineup the holes on the clamp and theleg.

4. Choose one of the two 3-inchbolts (#49). Slide it through thefirst set of holes — near the elbowwhere the lower handle curves.(Picture 2)

5. Now slide the other lower

handle onto the 3-inch bolt.(Picture 3.) Fit the other clamponto this other handle’s short leg.Add a nut and tighten finger tight.

6. Locate the worm gearhousing. It starts just above — andextends down through — thetiller’s red fender guard. You’llnotice that there’s a recessedchannel on either side of thehousing’s top. (Picture 4.)

7. Take the lower handles thatyou’ve just put together. Slidethem into the two recessedchannels.

Make sure you insert them from the rear of the tiller (gasolinetank faces the operator) . . . so thatthe bolt fits along the back of thehousing. (Picture 1 and 2, Page 8)

8. Slide the second 3-inch boltthrough the second set of holes inthe short legs. Add a nut andtighten finger tight.

AND MAKING ADJUSTMENTS.

HOW TO ASSEMBLEUPPER HANDLES &PLASTIC CARRYINGHANDLE.

1. Lightly squeeze the lowerhandles (#6) toward oneanother so that they line upwith the two smaller holes onthe carrying handle (#42). Thenslide the carrying handle overand down the lower handles. Itwill rest about four to six inchesabove the engine. (Picture 1)

2. Gently pull the lowerhandles out to their originalposition.

3. Attach the upper handleassembly (#5A) – the handlewith the throttle cable andground wire – onto eitherhandle, and secure

with the handle knob (#53). Youcan attach this upper handle towhichever lower handle youprefer, depending on whichhand you’d rather use to squeeze the throttle. (Picture #2)Note: If throttle handle ismounted on the left, it will notfold down as completely aswhen mounted on the right.) Besure you have proper throttlemovements and that thethrottle cable is not wrappedor twisted around the handlebar. Squeeze trigger and let go.The triangle must click in bothdirections. If there is any doubt,remove air filter and visuallycheck that the throttle trianglehits both the idle screw and thefull open stop. THIS MUST BEDONE BEFORE STARTINGTHE ENGINE.

4. Follow the same steps toinstall the other upper handleonto the other lower handle.(Picture 3)

5. Use the clip (#13) to securethe throttle cable and wire inplace on the lower handle.(Picture 4)

6. Now install the HandleBrace. Line it up with the holeson the upper handles. Theninsert a Cap Screw and a LockNut on either side (Picture 5)

7. Use a wrench to tightenCap Screws and Lock Nuts.

8. Now use wrench to tightenall nuts and bolts firmly andsecurely.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Make sure you haveinstalled the handlesproperly. When you standbehind your tiller, holdingthe handles, you shouldface the gasoline tank.

Assembling the Tinesfor Tilling

1. Remove the cardboardfrom around your Tiller’s base.

2. Slide the tines onto theaxle shafts. The “D” hole goeson the outside.

3. Make sure you’ve installedthe tines properly for tilling.Liken the tines to your fingers.When your palm faces theground, your fingers curl down.Stand behind the Tiller andhold your hand next to thetines. Do the tine blades curldown, as your fingers do? If so,they are in the tilling position.(To switch to the cultivatingposition, see page 15.)

4. To secure each tine to theaxle, insert a tine retaining pin.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Before you use your MANTIS Tiller, read the Safety Rules & Warnings on pages 3-5.

Mixing FuelYour MANTIS Tiller is powered by

a commercial two stroke, air cooledengine which requires a fuel mixtureof gasoline and lubricating oil.

Use a mixture of 50 parts unleadedregular gasoline and 1 part two-stroke MANTIS oil (50:1.) Use branded 89 octane (R+M+2) unleaded gasolineor gasohol (maximum 10% ethyl alcohol, or 15% MTBE, no methylalcohol.)

Your Mantis Tiller comes witha free pre-measured bottle oftwo-cycle engine oil. Here’s howto mix the oil with the gas:

1. Pour 1/2 of the gasolineinto a safe container. Do not mixthe fuel and oil in the enginefuel tank.

2. Add 2.6 ounces of two-cycle engine oil to the gasolineand mix. Then add the rest ofthe gasoline.

3. Screw the cap onto thegasoline can. Then swirl the canto blend the oil and gas.

4. Carefully pour the fuel mixinto the tiller’s fuel tank. Afterputting the fuel tank’s cap backon, wipe up any spilled fuelfrom tank and gasoline can.

IMPORTANT:Two stroke fuel separates andages. Do not mix more than youwill use in a month. Using oldfuel can cause difficult starting orengine damage. Shake fuelcontainer to thoroughly mix fuelbefore each use. Do not attemptto run your engine on gasolineonly, use proper fuel mixture.

Remember …

•Always mix two-cycle oil withgasoline before fueling yourtiller. Never, ever run your tilleron gasoline alone. This will ruinyour engine and void allwarranties.

•Always use a clean gas can andalways use unleaded gas.

•Never try to mix the oil andgasoline in the engine fuel tank.

•Always mix oil and gas in theproper proportions: 2.6 ouncesof two-cycle engine oil to onegallon of unleaded gasoline.

IMPORTANT NOTE:Do Not use old or staleoil/gasoline mixture.Always use the properoil/gasoline mixture. If youdo not, your engine willsuffer rapid, permanentdamage. And you will voidthe engine warranty.

STARTINGTo Start Your Tiller forthe First Time:

1. Fill the fuel tank with theproper oil/gasoline mixture. (See previous section.)

2. Hand tighten the gasolinecap just until it’s snug.

3. Place the start/stop switchinto the “start” position.(Picture 1)

4. Pull the choke button allthe way out, to completely closethe choke. (Picture 2)

5. Locate the purge bulb onthe upper right of the engine, infront of the fuel tank. (SeePicture 3) It sends fuel into thecarburetor, for easy starting.Press the purge bulb until yousee fuel flow through the clearfuel return line. Since you’restarting “cold,” you may need topress six to eight times. As soonas fuel starts flowing throughthe clear fuel line, stop pressing!(Picture 3)

6. Don’t press the throttlelever during the starting of theengine.

7. Pull the starter cord(Picture 4) until resistance isfelt. Then give the recoil starter

cord a few brisk pulls until theengine fires. Note: Pull thestarter cord about 12" to 18".During cold starting, you mayneed to pull at least three orfour times before the enginefires.

NOTE: When the choke isclosed, never pull the cord morethan four or five times.Overpulling may cause flooding.Also, bear in mind that, whenthe engine fires, it only coughsor sputters, and will not runon choke.

8. Push the choke button in,all the way, to open the choke.(Picture 5)

9. Then pull the starter cordagain. The engine should startand run. Let the engine warmup two to three minutes beforeusing.

Follow these steps whenever youare starting the engine “cold”, orwhen the engine has run dry andyou have just added fuel.Remember, always use short, briskpulls. Don’t give the cord a long,forceful yank. And, do not let thecord snap back into the starterhousing.

Starting a WarmEngine

1. Slide ignition switch toSTART position.

2. Push choke button in tothe RUN (open) position.

3. If there is no fuel in the

clear return line, push primerbulb 3-4 times or until fuel isvisible in the line.

4. Pull starter rope usingshort pulls, 1/2 to 2/3 of therope length.

5. If engine fails to start in 4pulls, use “First Time” starting

procedure on page 10.

6. With engine running, andboth hands on the handles,squeeze throttle triggergradually to increase the enginespeed and engage the tines.

How to Stop theEngine

Simply push the start/stopswitch to “stop.” (Picture 1)This will stop the engineinstantly. If it should ever fail todo so, just pull out the chokebutton. The engine will stop atonce.

About the ChokeThe choke controls the

amount of air drawn into theengine. Your tiller will run only

if the choke is open — that is, ifthe choke is pushed in.

A Special Feature(with the idle setproperly and theengine running)

Even when the engine isrunning, the tines won’t turnunless you press the throttlelever on the handlebars. And,when you release the throttlelever, the tines will stop.

A Tip for ExtendingYour Engine’s Life

After you start the engine, letyour tiller warm up for two tothree minutes before you use it.Then, before you put your tilleraway, let it idle for a minute togive the engine a chance to cooldown.

If you follow the normalstarting procedure, you shouldhave no problem starting yourtiller. But, just in case you dohave problems, here’s what to do.

Make sure the start/stopswitch is on “start.” You’d besurprised how many peopleforget to push the switch into the“start” position.

If the switch was on “stop”when you pulled the cord, youmay have flooded the engine.

•First, examine the spark plug.Use the special wrench thatcomes with our optionalMANTIS Handy Item Kit (Item#1422) or a 3/4 inch spark plugwrench. (Picture 1)

•Remove the cap over the sparkplug.

•Unscrew the spark plug.(Picture 2)

Starting a FloodedEngine

1. If the end of the spark plugis wet, the engine may beflooded. Make sure the switch

is in the stop position,disconnect spark plug wire andremove plug. Use a paper towelor a clean rag to dry the sparkplug, then, with the spark plugout of the engine, pull thestarter cord several times.Next, replace the spark plug. Usethe wrench to tighten it andreplace the cap. Next, put theswitch in the start position andpull the choke button out. Pullthe starter cord three or fourtimes until the engine coughs orsputters. Open the choke (pushthe choke button in) and pullthe cord a few times. The engineshould start and run.

2. If the end of the spark plugis dry, check to see if the fuelline is blocked. First loosen thefuel cap to relieve the pressure inthe tank. The fuel line runs fromthe fuel tank to the carburetor.Pull it off at the carburetor end.Fuel should drip slowly from theline. Wipe off any excess orspilled fuel.

If fuel does not drip from theline, check the line for any bendsor pinches. (Picture 3). Kinks inthe line restrict the flow of fuelto the engine. Just straighten outthe line. Reconnect. Then followthe normal starting procedure.

If fuel drips too freely, the linemay be disconnected from the fuelfilter. You’ll find the fuel filterinside the fuel tank. Just re-attachthe line to the filter, and put thefilter back in the tank. Then followthe normal starting procedure.

Here’s Another Way to Start your MANTIS Tiller

If you follow the steps aboveand your engine still won’t start,try this:

1. Push the switch to “start.”

How about a family-sizevegetable garden?

How to Switch FromTilling to CultivatingPosition

1. Make sure your Tiller isoff.

2. Remove the retaining pinsfrom the tines.

3. Remove the tines from theaxle.

4. Place the right-side tineonto the left-side axle. Place theleft side tine onto the right-sideaxle. The “D” hole should be tothe outside.

5. Here is how to make sureyou’ve installed the tinesproperly. Stand behind the Tillerand hold your hand, palm up,next to the tines. Do the tinepoints curl up, as your fingersdo? If so, they are in the correctcultivating position.

6. Reinsert the pins.

MAINTENANCECheck the Air Filter Often

A wet or dirty air filter canaffect the way your engine starts,performs, and wears. So, it’s agood idea to check your air filteronce a month.

If you work in dusty soil, or ifyou want to be on the safe side— then check your filter moreoften (for instance, before eachuse). But be sure to replace it atleast once a year, in the spring orfall. Clean or change it asneeded. It is recommended tochange the air filter yearly.

How to Check, Clean andChange the Air Filter

1. Loosen the wing nut on theside of the air-cleaner cover. (SeePicture 1, or look up Key #9 inAir Cleaner Parts Assembly onpage 28.)

2. Take off the cover. Makesure to clear the choke button.(Picture 2)

3. The air filter is the whitepad on the inside of the air-cleaner cover. Check whether itis soiled or moist.

4. If the air filter needscleaning or no longer fitsproperly, remove it. Just lift anedge carefully and “peel” it out.(Picture 3)

5. Use a brush to removedebris from the pad.

6. If the air filter is so dirtythat it won’t come clean, youmust replace it or severe enginedamage will occur. Order a newone directly from our CustomerService Dept. Call 1-800-366-6268.

7. Insert your clean filterinside the air-cleaner cover.

IMPORTANT! Make surefilter is “seated” properlyin the cover. The filtermust fit snugly inside therim that holds the filter inplace.

Installing the filter incorrectlywill cause engine damage andvoid the warranty. Fit the coverback over the air cleaner. (Again,make sure to clear the chokebutton.)

8. Tighten the wing nut tosecure the cover.

Note:

Please check the lipon the Air CleanerCover. If the lip ischipped or cracked,it should bereplaced. This willprevent dirt frombeing ingestedthrough thecarburetor into theinside of the engine.

How to Check the GreaseLevel Inside theWorm Gear Housing

When we built your MANTIS Tiller,we lubricated the worm gear housingthoroughly.

It is imperative that you inspect thegrease level once a year. Simplyremove the cover plate on the wormgear housing. (Picture 1) Then checkto make sure the grease comes almostto the top of the housing. If it doesn’t,add lithium #0 grease (Item M9985.)This is the only way to add grease tothe worm gear housing. (Picture 2) Topurchase Mantis grease, call our salesDept. - 1-800-366-6268.

Please do not overfill. Too muchgrease can create pressure, whichcould cause seals to fail or the clutchto slip.

Clear Blockages From theFuel Line & Filter:

After you’ve used your Tiller for afew seasons, check for blockages inthe fuel tank and fuel filter. Suchblockages can keep your Tiller fromstarting.

Clear any blockages you see in thetank, fuel filter, or fuel line.Remember: The fuel filter is locatedinside the tank. (See Picture 3) Thenuse the normal starting procedure tostart your Tiller.

What to Do if YourEngine Idles Too High

What if your engine runs toofast … or if the tines turn theinstant you start the Tiller? Youmay need to adjust the idlescrew (Key #31 underCarburetor on page 28) by itselfright below the H and L screws.Gently turn it counter-clockwise. You’ll know you’veadjusted it correctly when theaxles do not turn at low idle.

If you continue to have idleproblems, you may need toadjust the throttle cable.

First, locate the metal triangleat the end of the throttle cable.(Picture 1) The idle screw musttouch this triangle. But, if thethrottle cable’s too tight, you’llsee a gap between the idle screwand the triangle.

To fix this, loosen the top nutthat holds the throttle cable inplace. (Picture 2) (Use a 10mm

wrench or an adjustablewrench.) Then, slide the cabledown until you close the gapbetween the triangle and theidle screw. (Picture 1) Now,tighten the bottom nut thatholds the throttle cable.

Locate the metal “button” onthe triangle. This is the swivel.The large end of the throttlecable must be inside the slot inthis swivel. (Picture 3)

What to Do if YourEngine Runs “Rough”

If your engine runs “rough”or stalls, you may need to adjustthe carburetor and idle screws.

If you remove the air-cleanercover, you’ll see the twocarburetor, adjustment screwsnext to the black choke button.

The “RED” screw is theHIGH-speed adjustment…The“WHITE” screw is the lowspeed adjustment.

First, remove the tines fromthe axle. Then start engine. Letit run for two to three minutes.

“FLASH” the choke severaltimes during the warm-up toclear any air from the Fuelsystem.

Then stop the engine after itreaches operating temperature.

Now, turn the RED, high-speed screw counter-clockwiseall the way to stop…Then turnthe WHITE, low speed screwhalfway between the counter-clockwise and clockwise stoppositions.

Now restart the engine tofinish the carburetoradjustment.

Run the engine at full speedtwo or three seconds to clearout any excess fuel. Then returnto idle.

Now, accelerate the engine tofull throttle several times tocheck for a smooth transitionfrom idle to high speed.

If the engine hesitates turnthe WHITE, low-speed screwcounter-clockwise one-eighth ofa turn. Then accelerate theengine.

Repeat the adjustment untilyou get a smooth transition tohigh speed.

How to Reseat theFlange

At some point, you may findthat the tines won’t turn whenyou press the throttle. Thismay mean the engine isn’tsitting all the way down on theworm gear housing.

Perhaps you’ve been usingyour Tiller for several years.Or perhaps you’ve removedthe engine for use with ourhedge trimmer attachment,then replaced it. In either case,the flange bolt (Key #36, page29) may have come loose andlifted the engine up.

If this happened you’llnotice a gap between thebottom of the engine flange(Key #37, page 29) and thetop of the worm gear housing.(Picture 1)

To fix this, loosen the flangebolt. Take the engine off theworm gear housing. Noticethe hex head on top of thedrive shaft (Key #22, Page 27).Inside the flange housing,you’ll find the clutch drum(Key #29, Page 29). Make surethe hex head lines up with theclutch drum inside the flangehousing.

Then put the engine backon the worm gear housing.Make sure the plastic carryinghandle is not under the fueltank.

If you’ve followed these stepsproperly, there will be no gapbetween the engine flange andthe worm gear housing.(Picture 2) Make sure youtighten the flange bolt!

Cleaning the MufflerScreen

1. Take out the spark plug.

2. Remove the red cylindercover, (Key #32) which is heldon by 2 phillips-head screws.(Key #33)

3. You will see the metalscreen fixture, held on by 3more phillips-head screws.(Key #26) Remove the fixture.

4. Behind the fixture(Key #25) will be themuffler lid (Key #24)and muffler lid gasket(Key #23). The screensits under the gasket.

5. If the screen (Key #22) isclogged with deposits, it needsto be cleaned. Use carburetorcleaner, and any brush that isnot metal.

Brush the screen until you areable to see through it.

6. If the screen remainsplugged after attempts atcleaning, it must be replaced.

Each fall — or before youstore your Mantis Tiller forany long period — be sure totake these measures:

1. Do not store your Tillerwith fuel still in it. Even underideal conditions, stored fuelcontaining ethanol or MTBEcan start to go stale in 30 days.And, since stale fuel has ahigh gum content, it can clogthe carburetor, this, in turn,will restrict fuel flow. So,when you’re ready to storeyour Tiller, or will not beusing it for more than 2weeks, drain the fuel tankcompletely. (Picture 2)

2. Next, restart the engineto make sure no fuel is left inthe carburetor. Then run theengine until it stops. This willprevent gum deposits, forminginside of the carburetor andpossible engine damage.

3. Disconnect spark plugwire and remove the sparkplug. (Use the wrench thatcomes in our optional Handyitem Kit, Item #8444. Or use a19mm or 3/4” spark-plugwrench.) Pour about ateaspoon of clean, air-cooled,two-cycle oil through thespark-plug hole into thecombustion chamber. (Picture 3)Leaving the spark plug outslowly pull the starter cord twoor three times to coat theinside of the cylinder wall.

4. Inspect the spark plug, and,if necessary, clean it. If youneed to replace it, buy aNGK-BPM8Y. A replacementspark plug is included in theoptional Handy Item Kit item# 8444.

5. Install the spark plug, butleave the spark plug wiredisconnected.

6. Clean the air filter asdescribed on Page 17.

7. Clean dirt, grass, andother materials from the entiremachine.

8. Wipe the tines with oil orspray them with WD-40, toprevent rusting.

9. Oil the throttle cable andall visible moving parts. (Donot remove the engine cover.)

11. Order new parts to replace any that are badly worn or broken. Just call 1-800-366-6268 and ask for a localauthorized Mantis dealer.

12. Store your Tiller, in anupright position, in a clean, dryplace. You can store with thehandles in an extended position orfolded down. (Picture #1,preceding page)

13. To fold the handles, followthese easy steps: Loosen thehandle knobs (#53), fold thehandles forward (see picture #1,inset, preceding page). Tightenknob securely. Your handles arenow folded and ready to store in asmaller area.

14. Do you have fuel left overfrom last season? Dispose of itproperly. Buy fresh oil and gasolinenext season.

How to Prepare YourMANTIS Tiller forRestarting

Unfold the handles into an up-right or extended position. Tightenthe two handle knobs (#53)

In the Spring, when you take yourTiller out of storage, remove thespark plug. Pull the starter cordthree or four times to clean oilfrom the combustion chamber.

(Picture 1) Wipe oil from thespark plug. Place the spark plugback into the cylinder. Re-connectthe spark plug wire back on thespark plug. Then follow the stepson pages 9 & 10 to refuel andrestart your Tiller.

Again, Check theCarburetor.

If your Tiller won’t restart in theSpring — or if it lacks its usualpower — the carburetor may needattention. Follow the steps on page 19 for adjusting the H and Lscrews. (Picture 2)

Check the Spark PlugToo.

If your Tiller won’t restart, or ifit lacks full power, the spark plugmay be at fault. Check to see if theplug is fouled with oily blackdeposits. Clean or replace it if it is.(Picture 3)

Also, check whether the centerelectrode is rounded at the end, or if the ground electrode is worn.If either is the case, you shouldreplace it with a NGK-BPM8Yspark plug. Use a 19mm or a 3/4”spark-plug wrench to install it.Adjust the plug gap .024 - .028 in.(0.6 to 0.7 mm)

Caution: Do not overtighten the plug. The correcttorque is 18 to 22 ft.-lbs.(24-30 n.m)

IMPORTANT NOTE:

To avoid possible damage to the threads, do not try toremove the plug from a hotaluminum cylinder head.

The Border Edger (Item #3222)

The most popularattachment, the Border Edgercan be used to cut clean, neatedges along walkways, oraround trees, shrubs, andgarden beds.

The Border Edger has twoparts: a wheel and a hardenedsteel blade, with pointed tines.

How to Install theBorder Edger

The following instructionsrefer to “right” and “left” axles.Assume that you’re standingbehind your Tiller, as youwould for tilling andcultivating.

Some areas of your yard mayharbor roots and otherunderground obstructions. Inplaces like this you’ll want toedge your borders shallowly (1”to 2” deep). Here’s how toinstall the Border Edger forshallow edging:

1. First remove yourtilling/cultivating tines.

2. Then slide the edger’swheel onto the right axle.

3. Now slide the Edger bladeonto the left axle. The blade’sangled face should hit theground when you spin the bladeforward.

4. Insert retaining pins onboth left and right axles.

Around walkways and gardenbeds, you’ll want to edge moredeeply (3” to 4” deep). Here’show to install the Border Edgerfor that purpose:

1. Remove thetilling/cultivating tines.

2. Slide the Edger’s blade ontothe right axle. The blade’spointed face should hit theground when you spin the bladeforward.

3. Slide the wheel onto theleft axle.

4. Insert retaining pins onboth sides.

How to Use theBorder Edger

1. Position your MANTISTiller so that the Edger blade isright along the garden edge andthe wheel is outside (on thelawn, on the sidewalk,wherever). (Picture 1)

2. Start your Tiller and pullyour MANTIS backward alongthe garden edge. (Picture 2)

The Border Edger CanHandle SpecialProjects!

1. Install the Edger for deepedging, as directed above. Thenuse it to cut sod strips.

2. Edge and weed at the sametime! Just attach the Edgerblade on one axle and a Tillertine on the other axle, “Mix andmatch” blades; don’t be afraid to experiment.

IMPORTANT NOTE:If you do a lot of edging,you’ll appreciate theMANTIS Wheel Set(Item#9222.) It gives youadded stability, for eveneasier handling.

EPA / CALIFORNIA EMISSION CONTROL WARRANTY STATEMENTYOUR RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B.) and the Equipment Manufacturer are pleased to explain theemission control system warranty on your EPA Phase II / C.A.R.B. Tier 2 model year 2000 and later small off road engine (SORE). New small off road enginesmust be designed, built and equipped to meet stringent EPA and C.A.R.B. anti-smog standards. Echo, Incorporated must warrant the emission control system onyour small off road engine for the periods of time listed below provided there has been no abuse, neglect or improper maintenance of your small off road engine.

Your emission control system may include parts such as the carburetor or fuel injected system, and the ignition system and catalytic converter. Also includedmay be hoses, belts, connectors and other emission-related assemblies.

Where a warrantable condition exists, the Manufacturer will repair your small off road engine at no cost to you including diagnosis, parts and labor.

MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY COVERAGE:

The 1995 and later small off road engines are warranted for two years. If any emission-related part on your engine is defective, the part will berepaired or replaced by the Manufacturer.

OWNER'S WARRANTY RESPONSIBILITIES:

-As the small off road engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of the required maintenance listed in your Operator's Manual. TheManufacturer recommends that you retain all receipts covering maintenance on your small off road engine, but the Manufacturer cannot deny warrantysolely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance.

-As the small off road engine owner, you should however be aware that the Manufacturer may deny you warranty coverage if your small off road engine ora part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or unapproved modifications.

You are responsible for presenting your small off road engine to the Manufacturer's authorized service center as soon as a problem exists. The warranty repairsshould be completed in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days.

If you have any questions regarding your warranty rights and responsibilities, you should contact your Product Manufacturer.

EPA / CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS DEFECT WARRANTY EXPLANATION

This is additional detailed information about the EPA / CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS DEFECT WARRANTY for your small off road engine.

WHAT DOES THIS WARRANTY COVER?

The Manufacturer warrants that your unit was designed, built and equipped to conform with applicable California emissions standards and that your unit is freefrom defects in material and workmanship that would cause it to fail to conform with applicable requirements within two (2) years. The warranty period beginson the date the product is delivered to a retail purchaser. This is your emission control system, DEFECTS WARRANTY.

HOW WILL A COVERED PART BE CORRECTED?

If there is a defect in a part covered by this warranty, a Manufacturer's Authorized Service Dealer will correct the defect.

You will not have to pay anything to have the part adjusted, repaired or replaced. This includes any labor and diagnosis for warranted repairs performed by thedealer. In addition, engine parts not expressly covered under this warranty but whose failure is a result of a failure of a covered part will be warranted.

Emissions System repairs covered under this warranty should be completed in a reasonable time, not to exceed 30 days.

IMPORTANT

If the diagnosis reveals no defect, the emission defect warranty does not apply.

WHAT PARTS ARE COVERED BY THE EPA PHASE II AND C.A.R.B. 2000 & LATER SMALL OFF ROAD ENGINE EMISSIONS DEFECT WARRANTY?

• Any emission related part not scheduled for, "required maintenance" (See Engine Operators Manual, "SERVICE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE") will berepaired or replaced within the warranty period. The repaired or replaced part will be warranted for the remaining Emissions Defect warranty period.

• Any emission related part scheduled for replacement during "required maintenance" (See Engine Operators Manual, "SERVICE MAINTENANCESCHEDULE") is warranted for the period of time prior to the first scheduled replacement point for that part. Any such part repaired or replaced underwarranty shall be warranted for the remainder of the period prior to the first scheduled replacement point for that part.

• Any manufacturer-approved replacement part may be used in the performance of any warranty maintenance or repairs on emission-related parts, and must beprovided without charge if the part is still under warranty.

• Any replacement part that is equivalent in performance and durability may be used in non-warranty maintenance or repairs, and shall not reduce the warrantyobligations of the manufacturer.

• The owner is responsible for the performance of the required maintenance described in the operators manual.

IV. Advertencias -Hacer siempre

Leer y entender siempre el contenidodel manual del propietario. Prestarlesiempre atención particularmente atodas las secciones relacionadas con laseguridad.

1. Mantener siempre sujetadofirmemente y en todo momento el equipo,mientras las cuchillas estén en movimientoy/o el motor esté funcionando.¡¡MANTÉNGASE ATENTO!! Las cuchillasexcavadoras podrían seguir girandolentamente, aún después de haber liberado lapalanca del acelerador. Cerciorarse que lascuchillas excavadoras se hayan paralizadocompletamente y el motor se haya apagadoantes de soltar la excavadora.

2. Mantenerse siempre firmementeapoyado y equilibrado. No intentar tratar desobrepasar el alcance de sus brazos mientrasopera la excavadora. Antes de iniciar el usode su excavadora, verifique que en el área detrabajo no existan obstáculos que pudieranser la causa por la cual usted perdiera elequilibrio o el control de su máquina.

3. Inspeccionar siempre completamenteel área en donde será utilizada la máquina, yeliminar todos los objetos que pudiesen serlanzados por la máquina.

4. Mantener siempre alejados del área detrabajo a los niños, las mascotas, y loscuriosos.

5. Mantenerse siempre alerta. Observarlo que está haciendo y use el sentido común.No operar este equipo si está fatigado.

6. Vestir siempre con la indumentariaapropiada. No vestir ropa holgada ni alhajas,ya que estos artículos pudieran ser atrapadospor los componentes en movimiento. Usarsiempre guantes gruesos. Los guantesreducen la transmisión de la vibración ensus manos. La exposición prolongada a lavibración, puede provocarle adormecimientoen las manos y otras molestias.

7. Mientras trabaja, usar siempre calzadoresistente y pantalón largo. No operar esteequipo si está descalzo, ni mientras calcesandalias abiertas.

8. Usar siempre protección para la vista yel oído. La protección de la vista deberácumplir con la norma ANSI Z 87.1. Antes deusar este equipo y para evitar lesionarse losoídos, se recomienda usar los dispositivos deprotección.

9. Con el fin de reducir el riesgo deprovocar un incendio, mantenga el área dealmacenamiento del motor y el combustiblesin la presencia de materiales vegetales yexcesos de grasa.

10. Arrancar siempre el motorcuidadosamente según las instrucciones delfabricante, y mantener alejados los pies detoda clase de herramienta(s).

11. Mantener siempre todas las tuercas,tornillos y sujetadores apretados con el finde cerciorarse que el equipo esté en

condiciones funcionales seguras.12. Extremar siempre sus precauciones al

retroceder o tirar de la excavadora haciausted.

13. Ejecutar siempre sus labores con laluz del día, o con la iluminación de unabuena luz artificial.

14. Mantenerse siempre apoyadofirmemente sobre sus pies al caminar por losdeclives.

15. Extremar siempre sus precauciones alcambiar la dirección en las áreas a desnivel.

16. Mantenerse siempre a una distanciasegura ante la presencia de dos o máspersonas ejecutando estas mismas labores.

17. Inspeccionar siempre las condicionesde la unidad, antes de usarla, y cerciorarseque todos los manubrios, dispositivos deprotección y sujetadores estén firmementeapretados, operando apropiadamente, y en laposición debida.

Una parte importante del sistema de seguridad que se ha integrado a estaexcavadora, son las etiquetas engomadas con las advertencia e informaciónque han sido adheridas en varias partes. Estas etiquetas engomadas deberánser sustituidas en el momento oportuno, debido a los efectos abrasivos, etc.

Queda bajo su responsabilidad sustituir éstas calcomanías cuando estas hayan perdido sulegibilidad. La ubicación y el número de componente (N/C) que identifica a estascalcomanías se ha ilustrado en la página 27.

V. Advertencias –Nunca

Nunca operar la excavadora conuna sola mano. Mantenga ambasmanos en el manubrio con losdedos y pulgares rodeando elmanubrio mientras las cuchillasexcavadoras estén en movimiento yel motor esté en marcha.

Nunca exceder el alcance de susbrazos. Manténgase en todomomento bien apoyado sobre suspies.

Nunca correr con la máquina,camine.

Nunca ejecutar labores en áreas adesnivel muy pronunciadas.

Nunca intentar limpiar lascuchillas excavadoras mientrasestén en movimiento. Nuncaintentar extraer cualquier materialatascado, sin antes haberinterrumpido la marcha del motor,y cerciorarse que las cuchillasexcavadoras se hayan paralizadocompletamente.

Nunca permitir que los infantesni las personas sin la capacidad parahacerlo, operen esta excavadora.

Usar siempre gasolina nueva cuandose mezcle el combustible. La gasolinaque haya perdido sus cualidades podrácausarle daños.

Almacenar siempre el combustibleen envases diseñados específicamentepara ese propósito.

Tirar siempre lentamente de lacuerda del arrancador, hasta sentircierta resistencia. Después, tirarrápidamente de la cuerda delarrancador, para evitar el contragolpe

del arrancador y prevenir lesionarse elbrazo, o la mano.

Operar siempre el motor con elparachispas instalado y funcionandoapropiadamente. El uso de lossilenciadores con parachispas es unrequisito de la ley en el Estado deCalifornia (Sección 4442 del Código deRecursos Públicos de California), asícomo en otros estados o municipios.Las leyes federales le son pertinentes atoda la federación.

Interrumpir siempre elfuncionamiento del motor al abandonarla máquina.

Permitir siempre que el motor seenfríe, antes de almacenarlo en unlugar cerrado.

Si fuese necesario vaciar siempre eltanque del combustible, esto deberáhacerse al aire libre.

Nunca añadir combustible niverificar el nivel de combustible siestá fumando, o en las cercanías deflamas abiertas o cualesquiera otrasfuentes de ignición. Interrumpa elfuncionamiento del motor yasegúrese de que se haya enfriado.

Nunca dejar el motor enfuncionamiento mientras que laexcavadora esté desatendida.Interrumpa la marcha del motor antesde abandonar la excavadora omientras sea transportada de un lugara otro.

Nunca verter combustible, poneren marcha o hacer funcionar lacultivadora en interiores, o en unárea sin la ventilación apropiada.

Nunca hacer funcionar el motorcuando el sistema eléctrico provoque

chispas fuera del cilindro. Durante lasverificaciones periódicas de la bujía,mantenga la bujía a una distanciasegura del cilindro y así evitarquemar el combustible enevaporación dentro del cilindro.

Nunca compruebe la chispa deencendido, después de haber extraídola bujía o desconectado el cable de lamisma. Use un dispositivo de pruebaapropiado.

Nunca intentar poner en marcha elmotor cuando se haya extraído labujía de encendido, salvo que el cablede ignición haya sido desconectado.Las chispas pueden encender laevaporación del combustible.

Nunca hacer funcionar el motorante la presencia del olor acombustible, o cuando existan

algunas otras circunstancias quepudieran provocar una explosión.

Nunca operar esta unidad si se haderramado el combustible. Limpiecompletamente la gasolinaderramada, antes de arrancar elmotor.

Nunca operar su excavadora siexiste una acumulación dedesperdicios alrededor del silenciadory las aletas de enfriamiento.

Nunca tocar el silenciador, elcilindro o las aletas de enfriamientocuando estén calientes ya que estospudieran causarle quemadurasgraves.

Nunca modificar la disposición delgobernador del motor ni acelerar elmotor con demasía.

La excavadora MANTIS está parcialmenteensamblada. Usted solamente deberá instalarlas barras del manubrio, la empuñadura detransportación, y las cuchillas excavadoras.Este proceso solamente le tomará unoscuantos minutos, bastando seguir lasinstrucciones.

Primero, saque todos los artículos en elinterior de la caja. No extraer el cartóncolocado alrededor de la base de laexcavadora.

La lista en el costado derecho muestra loscomponentes que acompañan a suexcavadora. Verifique que estén todos en supoder.

La bolsa con los tornillos está dentro de labolsa de plástico que contiene el manual delpropietario y el audiovisual.

Será necesario tener a la mano dos llavesde tuercas de 11 mm (7/16 pulg.) o dos llavesde tuercas ajustables, para ensamblar suexcavadora MANTIS. Le sugerimos instalartodas las tuercas y tornillos apretándolossolamente con la “fuerza de sus dedos” - estodesde una media vuelta hasta una vueltacompleta, y hasta lograr ensamblarlatotalmente. Las tuercas son autobloqueantes;sin embargo, será necesario el uso de unallave inglesa para apretarlas completamente.

ENSAMBLADO (continuación)

CÓMO ENSAMBLARLOS MANUBRIOSINFERIORES

Consulte las páginas 6 y 27 si deseaidentificar los números de loscomponentes.

1. Use la funda de cartón protectorapara estabilizar la excavadora. Coloqueel ensamble del motor verticalmente(#21).

2. Coloque los componentes de losmanubrios al alcance de su mano. Seránecesario el uso de una de las abrazaderasdel manubrio (#51) y uno de losmanubrios inferiores (#6). Nótese que losmanubrios inferiores contienen una patamás corta en uno de los extremos.(Ilustración 1)

3. Inserte la abrazadera del manubrio através del exterior de la pata corta. Alineelas perforaciones de la abrazadera con lasde la pata corta.

4. Tome uno de los dos tornillos de 76mm (3 pulg.) de longitud (#49). Deslíceloa través del primer conjunto deperforaciones - en las cercanías del codoen donde el manubrio inferior conformasu curvatura. (Ilustración 2)

5. Ahora, deslice el otro manubrioinferior a través del tornillo de 76 mm (3

pulg.) de longitud. (Ilustración 3)Coloque la otra abrazadera a través de lapata corta del otro manubrio. Instale unatuerca y apriétela con la fuerza de losdedos.

6. Localice la carcasa de la transmisiónhelicoidal. Esta deberá estar colocadajustamente desde la parte superior yextenderse a través del guardafangos colorrojo instalado en la excavadora. Ustednotará la presencia de una ranura en canalen cualquiera de los lados de la partesuperior de la carcasa. (Ilustración 4)

7. Sostenga los dos manubriosinferiores que ensambló. Deslícelos através de las dos ranuras en canal.

Asegúrese haberlos insertado desdela parte trasera de la excavadora (eltanque de combustible frente al operario).. . de manera que los tornillos puedaninstalarse en la parte posterior de lacarcasa. (Ilustraciones 1 y 2, página 8).

8. Deslice el segundo tornillo de 76mm (3 pulg.) de longitud a través delsegundo conjunto de perforaciones en lassecciones cortas. Instale una tuerca yapriétela con la fuerza de los dedos.

CÓMO ENSAMBLARLOS MANUBRIOSSUPERIORES Y LAEMPUÑADURA DEPLÁSTICO PARATRANSPORTARLA

1. Apriete suavemente ambosmanubrios inferiores entre sí (#6),de manera que se alineen con lasdos perforaciones más pequeñas dela empuñadura de transportación(#42). Ahora, deslice laempuñadura de transportación porencima y hacia abajo de losmanubrios inferiores. Estaempuñadura se apoyaráaproximadamente a una distanciade 10 a 15 cm (4 – 6 pulg.) porencima del nivel del motor.(Ilustración 1)

2. Tire suavemente de losmanubrios inferiores hacia suposición original.

3. Fije el ensamble del manubriosuperior (Núm. 5A) - el manubriocon el cable del acelerador y elcable de tierra física - sobre

cualquiera de los dos manubrios yfíjelo con la perilla del manubrio(Núm. 53). Usted podrá fijar estemanubrio superior en cualquiera delos manubrios inferiores que ustedprefiera, dependiendo de lahabilidad en su mano izquierda oderecha, para operar la palanca delacelerador. (Ilustración 2) Nota: Siel manubrio con el acelerador seinstala en el lado izquierdo, este nose abatirá completamente haciaabajo como cuando se instala en ellado derecho. Cerciórese que losmovimientos del acelerador seanlos apropiados, y que el cable delacelerador no esté enredado odoblado alrededor de la barra dela empuñadura. Tire del gatillo ysuéltelo. El triángulo deberá hacerun chasquido en ambasdirecciones. Si tiene alguna duda alrespecto, saque el filtro del aire yverifique visualmente que eltriángulo del acelerador hagacontacto con el tornillo de marchaen ralentí y el tope de su posiciónabierta al máximo. ESTO DEBERÁHACERSE ANTES DE ARRANCAREL MOTOR.

4. Siga los mismos pasosmencionados anteriormente, parainstalar el otro manubrio superior,en el otro manubrio inferior.(Ilustración 3)

5. Usar el sujetador (Núm. 13)para fijar firmemente el cable delacelerador y el cable de aterrizadoen el lugar correspondiente en elmanubrio inferior. (Ilustración 4)

6. Ahora, instale el puntal delmanubrio. Alinéelo con lasperforaciones de los manubriossuperiores. Ahora, inserte untornillo con cabeza y una tuercaautobloqueante en cualquiera desus lados (Ilustración 5).

7. Use una llave de tuercas paraapretar los tornillos con cabeza ylas tuercas autobloqueantes.

8. Ahora, use la llave de tuercaspara apretar con firmeza yseguridad todas las tuercas ytornillos.

AVISO IMPORTANTE:Cerciórese haber instalado losmanubrios apropiadamente. Alcolocarse detrás de laexcavadora, sosteniendo losmanubrios, usted deberá tenerfrente a usted el tanque decombustible.

ABASTECE COMBUSTIBLE AL EQUIPO.

Ensamblado de lascuchillas excavadoras

1. Extraiga el cartón colocadoalrededor de la base de laexcavadora.

2. Deslice las cuchillasexcavadoras hacia los ejes. Lacavidad en “D” deberá colocarsehacia afuera.

3. Asegúrese de haber instaladolas cuchillas excavadorasapropiadamente, antes de iniciar elproceso de excavación. Trate deasemejar las cuchillas excavadorascon sus dedos. Cuando la palma desu mano esté colocada hacia elterreno, sus dedos curvean haciaabajo. Colóquese detrás de laexcavadora y mantenga su mano aun costado de las cuchillasexcavadoras. ¿Las puntas de lascuchillas curvean hacia abajo, de lamisma manera que lo hacen susdedos? Si es así, las cuchillas estáncolocadas en la posición correctapara excavar la tierra. (Si deseacambiarlas a la posición decultivación, consulte la página 15.)

4. Para fijar firmemente cadacuchilla excavadora al eje, inserte unpasador sujetador.

AVISO IMPORTANTE:Antes de proceder con el uso dela excavadora Mantis, lea lasnormas de seguridad y lasadvertencias en las páginas 3 ala 5.

Mezclado del combustibleSu excavadora MANTIS es propulsada

por un motor de uso industrial de dostiempos y enfriado por aire, que requierede una mezcla de combustible compuestade combustible sin plomo y aceitelubricante.

Su excavadora Mantis vieneacompañada de una botella gratispreviamente con la medida de aceitepara motores de dos tiempos. He aquícómo mezclar el aceite con elcombustible.

1. Vierta la mitad de la gasolina enun envase seguro. No mezcle elcombustible con el aceite lubricante enel tanque de combustible del motor.

2. Añádale al combustible unabotella (76 ml/2.6 onzas) de aceite paramotores de dos tiempos y mézclelos.Ahora, añada el combustible restante.

3. Instale y cierre la tapa delrecipiente que contiene el combustible.Ahora, revuelva la mezcla en formacircular para mezclar el aceitelubricante con el combustible.

4. Vierta cuidadosamente la mezcladel combustible y el aceite en el tanquedel combustible de la excavadora.Después de colocar la tapa del tanquedel combustible de la excavadora,limpie cualquier cantidad decombustible que se haya derramado deltanque y del recipiente.

ARRANQUEArranque suexcavadora porprimera vez:

1. Llene el tanque de combustiblecon la mezcla apropiada de aceite ycombustible. (Consulte la secciónanterior.)

2. Gire y apriete la tapa del tanquedel combustible con la fuerza de lamano.

3. Coloque el interruptor deencendido/apagado en la posición“Start”. (Ilustración 1)

4. Tire del botón del estranguladorcompletamente hacia fuera, para cerrarcompletamente el estrangulador(Ilustración 2)

5. Localice la pera de cauchoubicada en el lado derecho superior delmotor al frente del tanque delcombustible. (Consulte la Ilustración3) Esta pera inyecta combustible alcarburador para facilitar el encendidoinicial. Ejerza presión sobre la pera depurgado hasta que observe que elcombustible fluye a través del tubotransparente de retorno. Debido a queel encendido del motor es “en frío”,será necesario ejercer presión sobre lapera seis u ocho veces. ¡En cuantoempiece a fluir el combustible a travésdel tubo transparente de retorno,suspenda el proceso de purgado!(Ilustración 3)

6. No ejerza presión sobre lapalanca del acelerador durante elarranque del motor.

7. Tire de la cuerda de encendido(Ilustración 4) hasta percibir ciertaresistencia. Ahora, tire de la cuerda del

arrancador con resorte antagónicounas cuantas veces en una acción cortay enérgica, hasta que el motor esté enmarcha. Aviso: Tire de la cuerda dearranque aproximadamente de 30 a 45cms (12 a 18 pulg.) de longitud.Durante el encendido en frío, quizá seanecesario tirar de la cuerda tres ocuatro veces antes de lograr que elmotor se ponga en marcha.

AVISO: Si el estrangulador delcarburador está cerrado, nunca tire dela cuerda de encendido más de cuatroo cinco veces. Tirar de la cuerda másde lo debido, podría inundar elcarburador del motor. Recuerdetambién que, cuando el motor esté enmarcha, solamente funcionaráirregularmente tosiendo o fallando; yno funcionará apropiadamentemientras esté cerrado el estranguladordel carburador.

8. Empuje el botón delestrangulador totalmente haciaadentro, para abrirlo. (Ilustración 5)

9. Ahora, vuelva nuevamente a tirarde la cuerda del arrancador. El motordeberá ahora arrancar y funcionarapropiadamente. Permita que el motorse caliente durante dos o tres minutosantes de que esté en condiciones deuso.

Siga estos pasos cuando intente poner enmarcha el motor “en frío”, o cuando almotor se le haya agotado el combustibley usted le haya añadido combustible altanque. Recuerde tirar de la cuerda deencendido con acciones cortas yenérgicas. No tire de la cuerdafuertemente y a toda su longitud. Y, nopermita que la cuerda de encendidoretroceda súbitamente hacia la carcasadel arrancador.

Arranque del motorcaliente

1. Coloque el interruptor de laignición hacia la posición deencendido “Start”.

2. Empuje el botón delestrangulador hacia la posición dearranque (abierto) “Run”.

3. Si no puede apreciar lapresencia de combustible en eltubo transparente de retorno,apriete la perilla de purgado 3 o 4

veces, o hasta que el combustiblepueda ser visible fluyendo en eltubo.

4. Tire de la cuerda con tiroscortos, a 1/2 o 2/3 de la longitudde la cuerda.

5. Si el motor no arrancadespués de tirar 4 veces de lacuerda, siga el procedimiento dearranque "por primera vez"mencionado en la página 10.

6. Una vez que el motor esté enmarcha y usted tenga ambas manos

sobre el manubrio, accionegradualmente la palanca delacelerador, para incrementar lavelocidad del motor y desembragarlas cuchillas excavadoras.

Cómo paralizar elmotor

Simplemente coloque elinterruptor de encendido yapagado en la posición “Stop”.(Ilustración 1) Esta acciónparalizará instantáneamente elmotor. En caso de que esteprocedimiento fallara, simplementetire del botón del estrangulador. Elmotor se paralizará al instante.

El estrangulador delcarburador

El estrangulador del carburadorcontrola la cantidad de aire queabsorbe el motor. Su excavadorasolamente funcionará al abrir el

estrangulador - esto es, siempre ycuando el tirador del estranguladorsea colocado en su posición haciadentro.

Una característicaespecial (con el motoren ralentí ajustadoapropiadamente y elmotor en marcha)

Aun cuando el motor esté enmarcha, las cuchillas excavadorasno girarán, salvo que usted accionela palanca del acelerador instaladaen los manubrios. Y, al liberar lapalanca del acelerador, las cuchillasexcavadoras se paralizarán.

Un consejo paraprolongar la vida útilde su motor

Después de haber puesto enmarcha el motor, permita que estese caliente durante dos o tresminutos antes de proceder ausarlo. Posteriormente, después dehaber usado su excavadora,permita que el motor permanezcaen marcha durante un minuto y asípermitirle que se enfríe.

Si usted sigue el procedimientonormal de encendido del motor, nodeberá presentársele ningún problemacon su excavadora. Sin embargo, encaso de que usted se enfrentara conalgunos problemas, he aquí lo quedeberá hacer.

Cerciorarse que el interruptor deencendido y apagado esté en la posición“Start”. Usted se sorprendería alenterarse de la cantidad de personasque olvidan colocar el interruptor deencendido en la posición “Start”.

Si el interruptor de encendido estabacolocado en la posición “Stop” al tirarde la cuerda del arrancador, quizá elcarburador se haya inundado decombustible.•Primero, examine las condiciones de labujía de encendido. Use la llave debujías especial que se incluye en eljuego de herramientas útil opcional deMANTIS (Artículo Núm. 1422) o unallave de bujías de 19 mm (3/4 pulg.).(Ilustración 1)•Extraiga la bota protectora de la bujíade encendido.

Arranque del motorcon el carburadorinundado con gasolina

1. Si el extremo de la bujía estáhúmedo, quizá el carburador se inundócon combustible. Cerciórese que elinterruptor de encendido esté en laposición “Stop”. Desconecte el cable dela bobina de la bujía de encendido y

extraiga la bujía de encendido. Use unatoalla desechable de papel o un pañolimpio, para secar la bujía deencendido. Una vez que la bujía deencendido haya sido extraída del motor,tire varias veces de la cuerda delarrancador. Después, reinstale la bujíade encendido. Use la llave de bujíaspara apretarla y vuelva a colocarle labota. A continuación, coloque elinterruptor en la posición "Start" y tiredel estrangulador del carburador. Tirede la cuerda del arrancador tres ocuatro veces, hasta que el motorarranque tosiendo o fallando. Abra elestrangulador (empuje el botón delestrangulador) y vuelva a tirar de lacuerda unas cuantas veces más. Elmotor deberá ahora arrancar yfuncionar apropiadamente.

2. Si el extremo inferior de la bujíade encendido está seco, cerciórese queel tubo abastecedor de combustible noesté bloqueado. Primero, afloje la tapadel tanque de combbustible paraeliminar la presión en el interior. Eltubo abastecedor de combustible estáinstalado desde el tanque decombustible, hasta el carburador.Extraiga el tubo abastecedor decombustible del extremo conectado alcarburador. El combustible deberágotear lentamente por el tubo. Limpiecualquier exceso o derrame decombustible.

Si el combustible no gotea por eltubo abastecedor, cerciórese que el tubono esté doblado o pinzado. (Ilustración3). Las dobladuras en el tuboabastecedor de combustible impiden elflujo de combustible hacia el motor.Simplemente desdoble el tubo, vuelva aconectarlo, y siga el procedimientonormal de arranque.

Si el combustible goteaexcesivamente, el tubo abastecedor decombustible podría habersedesconectado del filtro del combustible.El filtro del combustible está localizadoen el interior del tanque decombustible. Simplemente conectenuevamente el tubo abastecedor al filtroy coloque nuevamente el filtro en elinterior del tanque de combustible.Ahora, siga el procedimiento normal dearranque.

4. Tire de la cuerda delarrancador varias veces en accionescortas y enérgicas. El motor deberáahora arrancar y funcionarapropiadamente.

5. Si el motor no está aún enmarcha, tire del botón delestrangulador del carburador. Tirede la cuerda del arrancador cuatroo cinco veces. El motor deberáfuncionar con cierta irregularidad.

6. Una vez que el motor esté enmarcha de manera irregular,coloque el botón del estranguladoren su posición hacia dentro. Ahora,tire de la cuerda del arrancador. Elmotor deberá ahora arrancar yfuncionar apropiadamente.

7. Si aún así el motor no está enmarcha, repita los pasos 2 al 6.

8. Si aún así todavía el motorno arranca, llame al 1-800-366-6268 y solicite Servicio a Clienteso el nombre de su distribuidorlocal Mantis.

Simplemente accionesuavemente la palanca del acelerador ypermita que la excavadora se desplacesobre sus cuchillas excavadoras“caminando” por su jardín. Lascuchillas no dañarán el césped ni laentrada a la cochera. (Ilustración 1)

Transportándola conambas manos.

Cerciórese que el motor no esté enmarcha. Ahora, use una de sus manospara guiarla con el cómodo asidero

para su transportación. Use la otramano para sostenerla por losmanubrios. (Ilustración 2) Ahora,levante la excavadora y transpórtelahacia su jardín. Por su peso ligero deapenas 9.500 kg (20 lbs.), susmúsculos no tendrán que hacer muchoesfuerzo ¡ni tampoco se cansará!

Lleve su excavadorade paseo.

¿Qué le parecería unahortaliza tamañofamiliar?

Hoy en día a muchas personas aquienes les gusta la jardinería,prefieren jardines pequeños –especialmente en los suburbios, endonde el espacio es algo muy valioso.Pero, si usted es uno de losafortunados que cuentan con una granextensión de terreno, usted podrácrear un jardín más grande – hasta de2,023 m2 (1/2 acre) o más. He aquícomo lograrlo:

1. Primero, contrate a una personaque posea un tractor o una excavadorade gran tamaño, para que desmonte elterreno. Esta será la única y últimainversión que bien vale su pequeñocosto.

2. Ahora, use su excavadora paradesmenuzar cualquier terrón o céspedque no desee. La diferencia entre untractor o una excavadora de grantamaño, es que la excavadora MANTISes un instrumento de precisión.Pulverizará la tierra hasta dejarla comouna cama uniforme para el cultivo.

3. Extraiga las cuchillasexcavadoras instaladas en el eje.

4. Coloque la cuchilla excavadoradel lado derecho en el eje del ladoizquierdo. Coloque la cuchillaexcavadora del lado izquierdo en el ejedel lado derecho. La cavidad en “D”deberá estar hacia el exterior.

5. He aquí cómo asegurarse de quelas cuchillas se hayan instalado demanera apropiada. Colóquese detrásde la excavadora y mantenga su mano,con la palma hacia arriba, a un costadode las cuchillas excavadoras. ¿Laspuntas de las cuchillas curvean haciaarriba de la misma manera que lohacen sus dedos? Si es así, lascuchillas están colocadas en laposición correcta para cultivar.

6. Vuelva a insertar los pasadores.

Ahora, todo está listopara cultivar o cortar lashierbas.

Desplace su excavadora hacia el área endonde usted desee iniciar la excavación delterreno y hágala funcionar. Tire lentamentede la excavadora hacia atrás y permita queavance unos cuantos centímetros hacia elfrente con un movimiento oscilante y consuavidad. ¡Observe cómo corta las hierbas,las hace jirones y las entierra!

¿Algunas hierbas difíciles de eliminar?Reduzca la presión sobre el acelerador ydisminuir así la velocidad de las cuchillas.Ahora, desplace la excavadora conmovimientos hacia el frente y hacia atrás,hasta que las cuchillas despedacen lashierbas. ¡Esto es muy fácil y eficaz!.

MANTENIMIENTOVerifique frecuentementelas condiciones del filtrodel aire

Un filtro del aire húmedo o suciopodrá afectar la manera en la quearranque el motor, funcione, y sedesgaste. Así que, es una buena ideaverificar el filtro del aire una vez almes.

Si usted trabaja en un terrenopolvoso, o si desea mantenerse por ellado seguro – verifique entonces elfiltro con mayor frecuencia (porejemplo, antes de cada uso). Sinembargo, recuerde que este filtro deberáser sustituido por uno nuevo una vez alaño, durante la primavera o el otoño.Límpielo o cámbielo según seanecesario. Se recomienda cambiar elfiltro del aire por lo menos anualmente.

Cómo verificar, limpiar ycambiar el filtro del aire

1. Afloje el tornillo tipo mariposacolocado a un costado de la cubiertadel filtro del aire. (Consulte laIlustración 1, o la Clave Núm. 1 en elensamble de los componentes del filtrodel aire en la página 28.)

2. Extraiga la cubierta. (Asegúreseque el botón del estrangulador no seaun obstáculo). (Ilustración 2)

3. El filtro del aire es la almohadillacolor blanco colocada en el interior dela cubierta del filtro del aire. Verifiquesi está sucia o húmeda.

4. Si el filtro del aire necesitalimpiarse o no cumple apropiadamente

con su función, extráigalo.Simplemente levante una de las orillasy “despéguelo” hacia fuera. (Ilustración3)

5. Use un cepillo, para eliminar losdesechos acumulados en el filtro delaire.

6. Si el filtro del aire está demasiadosucio y no es posible limpiarloapropiadamente, será necesariosustituirlo por uno nuevo. De otramanera existe la posibilidad de que elmotor se dañe permanentemente.Solicite uno nuevo directamente delDepartamento de Servicio a Clientesllamando al 1-800-366-6268.

7. Inserte el filtro nuevo en elinterior de la cubierta del filtro del aire.

¡IMPORTANTE! Cerciórese queel filtro esté “apoyado”apropiadamente en el interiorde la carcasa. El filtro deberácolocarse ceñidamente en elinterior de la ceja que sostieneal filtro en su posición.

Instalar el filtro del aireincorrectamente dañará el motor einvalidará la garantía. Instalenuevamente la cubierta sobre el filtrodel aire. (Asegúrese nuevamente que elbotón del estrangulador no sea unobstáculo).

8. Apriete el tornillo tipo mariposa,para fijar firmemente la cubierta.

Aviso: Por favor verifique

las condiciones deapoyo del labio de lacubierta del filtro delaire. Si el labio estáagrietado o rasgado,éste deberá sersustituido por unonuevo. Este labiopreviene que el polvose interne a través delcarburador y hacia elinterior del motor.

Cómo verificar el nivel degrasa en el interior de lacarcasa de la transmisiónhelicoidal

Durante el proceso de fabricación de suexcavadora MANTIS, lubricamoscompletamente el interior de la carcasa de latransmisión helicoidal.

Es imperioso verificar el nivel de grasaanualmente. Simplemente extraiga la placa deprotección de la carcasa de la transmisiónhelicoidal. (Ilustración 1) Ahora, verifiqueque el nivel de la grasa esté casi en la partesuperior de la carcasa. Si la grasa no está a esenivel, añada grasa de litio # 0 (Artículo Núm.M9985). Esta es la única manera de añadirlela grasa a la carcasa de la transmisiónhelicoidal. (Ilustración 2) Si desea adquirir lagrasa Mantis, llame a nuestro Departamentode Ventas al 1-800-366-6268.

Por favor no la llene más allá del nivelindicado. Añadir grasa con demasía puedecrear presión en el interior de la carcasa y serla causa de que el sello falle o el embragueresbale.

Eliminación del bloqueoen el tubo del combustibley en el filtro:

Después de haber usado la excavadoradurante varias épocas del año, verifique laexistencia de bloqueos en el tanque decombustible y en el filtro. Estos bloqueospueden evitar que el motor de la excavadorapueda ser puesto en marcha.

Elimine cualquier bloqueo que puedaapreciarse en el tanque, en el filtro decombustible, o en el tubo del combustible.Recuerde: El filtro del combustible estáinstalado en el interior del tanque decombustible. (Consulte la Ilustración 3)Prosiga con el procedimiento normal paraponer en marcha el motor de la excavadora.

Qué hacer cuando elralentí del motor seademasiado alto

¿Qué pasa si el motor estádemasiado acelerado… ó si lascuchillas giran al instante de arrancarla excavadora? Quizá habrá necesidadde ajustar el tornillo de la velocidad enralentí (Clave Núm. 31 en la seccióndel Carburador de la página 28)ubicado debajo de los tornillosmarcados H y L. Gírelo suavemente encontra de la dirección de lasmanecillas del reloj. Usted podrápercatarse de que el ralentí ha sidoajustado correctamente si los ejes de laexcavadora no giran cuando el motoresté en su velocidad de ralentí.

Si continúan presentándoseproblemas con el ajuste del ralentí,será necesario entonces ajustar el cabledel acelerador.

Primero, localice el triángulometálico colocado en el extremo delcable del acelerador. (Ilustración 1) Eltornillo de ajuste de ralentí deberáestar en contacto con este triángulo.Pero, si el cable del acelerador estáapretado con demasía, usted podráapreciar un espacio entre el tornillo deajuste de ralentí y el triángulo.

Para solucionar esto, afloje la tuercasuperior que sostiene en su lugar alcable del acelerador. (Ilustración 2)(Use una llave de tuercas de 10 mm ouna llave ajustable.) Ahora, deslice elcable hacia abajo, hasta cerrar elespacio entre el triángulo y el tornillode ajuste de ralentí. (Ilustración 1)Ahora, apriete la tuerca inferior quesostiene al cable del acelerador.

Identifique el “botón” metálico enel triángulo. Esta es la placa giratoria.El extremo de gran tamaño del cabledel acelerador deberá estar dentro dela ranura en esta placa giratoria.(Ilustración 3)

Qué hacer cuando elmotor funciona“irregularmente”

Si el motor funciona"irregularmente" o interrumpe sufuncionamiento, será necesario ajustarel carburador y los tornillos de ralentí.

Al extraer la cubierta del filtro delaire, usted podrá ver los dos tornillosde ajuste en el carburador ubicadosjunto al botón color negro delestrangulador.

El tornillo “ROJO” es el ajuste deALTA velocidad del ralentí… eltornillo “BLANCO” es para ajustar laBAJA velocidad del ralentí.

Primero, extraiga las cuchillasexcavadoras instaladas en el eje.Ahora, haga funcionar el motor.Permita que funcione durante dos otres minutos. Empuje y tire“SÚBITAMENTE” del botón delestrangulador varias veces durante el

proceso de calentamiento, paraeliminar cualquier cantidad de aire enel sistema del combustible.

Ahora, interrumpa elfuncionamiento del motor una vez quehaya alcanzado la temperaturaoperativa.

Ahora, gire el tornillo ROJO de altavelocidad en la dirección contraria alas manecillas del reloj y hasta que sedetenga… ahora, gire el tornilloBLANCO de baja velocidad a unaposición media entre las posicionescontraria y en la dirección de lasmanecillas del reloj.

Ahora, vuelva a arrancar el motor,para finalizar el ajuste del carburador.

Haga funcionar el motor a sumáxima capacidad durante dos o tressegundos y eliminar así cualquierexceso de combustible. Ahora, permitaque retroceda a su velocidad enralentí.

Acelere el motor a su máximavelocidad varias veces, para verificar latransición ininterrumpida de lavelocidad en ralentí; a su máximaaceleración.

Si el motor falla, gire el tornilloBLANCO de baja velocidad un octavode vuelta hacia la dirección contraria alas manecillas del reloj. Ahora, acelereuna vez más el motor.

Repita esta ajuste, hasta que logre latransición ininterrumpida a la altavelocidad.

Cómo volver aacoplar la brida

En algún momento usted podrádarse cuenta que las cuchillasexcavadoras no girarán al accionar lapalanca del acelerador. Esto podríasignificar que el motor no estátotalmente apoyado sobre la carcasade la transmisión.

Quizá esto se deba a que usted hausado su excavadora durante variosaños. O, quizá usted desmontó elmotor para usarlo con el accesorio dela podadora de arbustos, y después loreinstaló en su excavadora. Encualquiera de estos casos, el tornillode la brida (Clave Núm. 36, página29) pudiera haberse aflojado yelevado el motor.

Si esto fue lo sucedido, ustedpodrá notar un espacio entre elextremo inferior de la brida del motor(Clave Núm. 37, página 29) y la partesuperior de la carcasa de latransmisión helicoidal. (Ilustración 1)

Para reparar esta irregularidad,afloje el tornillo de la brida. Extraigael motor de la carcasa de latransmisión helicoidal. Note la

existencia de un tornillo con cabezahexagonal en la parte superior del ejepropulsor (Clave Núm. 22, página27). Dentro de la carcasa de la bridausted encontrará el tambor delembrague (Clave Núm. 29, página29). Cerciórese que la cabezahexagonal esté alineada con el tambordel embrague en el interior de lacarcasa de la brida.

Ahora, coloque el motornuevamente sobre la carcasa de latransmisión helicoidal. Cercióreseque la empuñadura de transportaciónde material plástico no esté debajodel tanque de combustible.

Si usted siguió estos pasosapropiadamente, deberá haberseeliminado el espacio entre la carcasainferior y la carcasa de la transmisiónhelicoidal. (Ilustración 2) ¡Asegúresede haber apretado los tornillos quesostienen la carcasa!

Limpieza de la mallaprotectora delsilenciador

1. Extraiga la bujía de encendido.

2. Extraiga la cubierta cilíndricade color rojo, (# 32) que estásostenida con 2 tornillos con cabezatipo Phillips. (Clave Núm. 33)

3. Usted notará que el accesoriode la malla metálica está sostenidocon 3 o más tornillos con cabezaPhillips, (# 26). (Clave Núm. 26)Extraiga este accesorio.

4. Detrás del accesorio extraído(Clave Núm. 25) está ubicada lacubierta del silenciador (Clave Núm.23) y la junta de la tapa delsilenciador (Clave Núm. 23). La

malla protectora está apoyada sobrela junta.

5. Si la malla protectora(Clave Núm. 22) se hacongestionado con desechos,será necesario limpiarla.Usar limpiador decarburadores y cualquiertipo de cepillo sin cerdas dealambre.

Cepille la malla protectorahasta lograr ver a través dela misma.

6. Si la malla protectora continúacongestionada con desperdiciosdespués de haber intentadolimpiarla, ésta deberá ser substituidapor una nueva.

Durante la época de otoño — oantes de almacenar su excavadoraMANTIS durante un periodo detiempo prolongado — cercióresetomar estas medidas:

1. No almacene su excavadora sicontiene aún cierta cantidad decombustible en su interior. Aún bajocondiciones ideales, el combustiblealmacenado que contenga etano oMTBE puede perder sus condicionescombustibles después del transcursode 30 días. Y, debido a que elcombustible que ha perdido suscondiciones combustibles contieneun elevado contenido de resinas,éstas podrían obstruir los conductosdel carburador; y por lo tanto ycomo resultado, impedir el flujo decombustible. Así que, una vez queusted haya decidido almacenar suexcavadora, o no aprovechar su usodurante más de 2 semanasconsecutivas, extraiga elcombustible sobrante en el tanque.(Ilustración 2)

2. A continuación, arranque elmotor para cerciorarse que el motorhaya consumido todo el combustibleacumulado en el carburador. Ahora,permita que el motor se mantengafuncionando hasta que interrumpasu funcionamiento por si solo. Estaacción previene que las resinas seadhieran en el interior delcarburador y la posibilidad de que elmotor se dañe.

3. Desconecte el cable de la bujíay extraiga la bujía de encendido.(Use la llave de tuercas en el juegode herramientas útiles opcionalClave Núm. 8444. O use una llavede bujías de 19 mm o 3/4 pulg.)Vierta aproximadamente unacucharada cafetera de aceite limpiopara motor de dos tiempos enfriadopor aire en la cavidad de la cabeza dela cámara de combustión.(Ilustración 3). Sin haber instaladola bujía, tire lentamente dos o tresveces de la cuerda del arrancadorpara recubrir las paredes interioresdel cilindro.

4. Inspeccione las condiciones dela bujía de encendido, si esnecesario, y límpiela. Si es necesarioadquiera una bujía NGK-BPM8Y.

Le hemos agregado una bujía derepuesto al juego de herramientasútiles Clave Núm. 8444.

5. Instale la bujía, pero deje elcable de la ignición desconectado.

6. Limpie el filtro del aire comose describió en la página 17.

7. Limpie el lodo, el césped ycualquier otro material adherido a laexcavadora.

8. Limpie las cuchillasexcavadoras con aceite o rocíelas conaceite WD-40, para prevenir suoxidación.

9. Aceite el cable del acelerador ytodas los componentes móviles quesean visibles. (No extraiga lacubierta del motor.)

10. Verifique el nivel de grasa en lacarcasa de la transmisión helicoidal, segúnse describió en la página 18.

11. Solicite los componentes nuevosque sean necesarios para sustituir aquellosque se hayan gastado demasiado, o sufridoalgún daño. Simplemente llame al 1-800-366-6268 y solicite la ubicación de undistribuidor autorizado Mantis en sulocalidad.

12. Almacene su excavadora — en unaposición vertical — en un lugar seco ylimpio. Usted podrá almacenar laexcavadora con los manubrios extendidoso abatidos. (Ilustración 1, página anterior)

13. Para abatir los manubrios, sigaestos pasos muy fáciles: Afloje los tornillosde los manubrios (Clave Núm. 53), abatalos manubrios hacia delante (consulte laIlustración 1, en la página anterior).Apriete los tornillos fuertemente. Losmanubrios han quedado abatidos y listos,para que usted almacene la excavadora enun área más reducida.

14. ¿Tiene algún sobrante decombustible que no haya sido consumidodurante la última época del año?Deséchelo apropiadamente. Adquieraaceite nuevo y combustible sin plomo alinicio de la siguiente época del año.

Cómo prepararse paraponer en marcha elmotor de su excavadoraMANTIS

Levante los manubrios en una posiciónvertical o extendida. Apriete los dostornillos de los manubrios (Clave Núm.53). (#53)

Durante la época de primavera, cuando

usted esté listo para utilizar una vez másla excavadora, extraiga la bujía deencendido. Tire de la cuerda delarrancador tres o cuatro veces paraeliminar el aceite que recubre la cámarade combustión.

(Ilustración 1) Limpie cualquier excesode aceite acumulado en la bujía deencendido. Instale la bujía de encendido

en el cilindro. Vuelva a conectar el cablede la bobina en la bujía de encendido.Ahora, siga los pasos indicados en lapágina 9 y 10 para añadirle elcombustible al tanque y poner en marchasu excavadora.

Una vez más, verifiquelas condiciones delcarburador.

Si existe alguna dificultad para poneren marcha el motor de la excavadoradurante el inicio de la época de primavera— o si el motor carece de su potenciahabitual — posiblemente el carburadornecesite de su atención. Siga los pasosindicados en la página 19 para ajustar lostornillos H y L. (Ilustración 2)

Verifique una vez mástambién las condicionesde la bujía deencendido.

Si el motor de la excavadora no puedeponerse en marcha o si el motor carece depotencia, posiblemente la bujía deencendido no esté en buenas condicionesde uso. Verifique si el electrodo de labujía de encendido no contiene depósitosde carbón. Limpie o sustituya la bujía deencendido si ese es el caso. (Ilustración 3)

Verifique también si el electrodo perdiósus vértices o si el contacto a tierra físicaestá desgastado. Si se trata de cualquierade esas dos circunstancias, usted deberásustituirla con una bujía NGK-BPM8Y.Use una llave de bujías de 19 mm o unallave ajustable de 3/4 pulg., para instalarla bujía de encendido. Ajuste la distanciade separación entre ambos electrodos a0.6 o 0.7 mm.(.024 - .028 pulg.)

Cuidado: No apriete la bujía deencendido con demasía. El par detorsión correcto es de 24-30 n.m. (18 a 22ft.-lbs.) (24-30 n.m)

AVISO IMPORTANTE:Para evitar la posibilidad dedañar la rosca de la bujía deencendido, no intente extraer labujía cuando la cabeza dealuminio del cilindro estécaliente.

LOCALIZACIÓN DE POSIBLES AVERÍAS

1. Las cuchillas no se mueven al tirardel gatillo del acelerador.

El motor no está asentadoapropiadamente sobre la carcasa dela transmisión.

Reinstale el motor según lasinstrucciones en la página 20(Cómo reasentar la brida).

2. El motor no arranca. El interruptor de encendido/apagadoestá en la posición “Stop”.

El tanque de combustible está vacío.El colador del combustible está

Demasiado aceite lubricante en lamezcla.

El estrangulador no está del todocerrado, o está demasiado cerrado.

El carburador está desajustado.Fuga en el empaque (el empaque del

carburador o de la base del cilindro).Chispa débil en la bujía de encendido.

Vacíe totalmente el sistema y vuelva allenarlo con combustible nuevo.

Vacíelo y llénelo con la mezcla decombustible adecuada.

Si el carburador se inunda por habermantenido el estrangulador cerrado,proceda según lo indican las instruccionesen la sección “Operación”. Si la posicióndel estrangulador está demasiado abierta,mueva la palanca del estrangulador haciala posición de cerrado y tire dos o tresveces de la cuerda del arrancador.

Orilladora Border Edger(Artículo Núm. 3222)

El accesorio más popular, laorilladora Border Edger, puedeutilizarse para hacer cortes parejos yuniformes a lo largo de los pasillos, oalrededor de los árboles y jardines.

La orilladora Border Edger estáequipada con dos componentes: unarueda y una cuchilla de acerotemplado, con cuchillas de cortepuntiagudas.

Cómo instalar laorilladora BorderEdger

Las instrucciones a continuaciónhacen referencia a los ejes “derecho” e“izquierdo”. Suponga estar detrás de laexcavadora, como si estuvieraexcavando o cultivando la tierra.

Algunas áreas en su patio pudieranestar albergando raíces y otrasobstrucciones por debajo de lasuperficie. En lugares como estos seríaconveniente cortar sus orillas a pocaprofundidad (2.5 a 5 cm - 1 a 2 pulg.).

He aquí como instalar la orilladoraBorder Edger para orillar a bajaprofundidad:

1. Primero, desinstale las cuchillasexcavadoras/cultivadoras.

2. Ahora, deslice la rueda de laorilladora Border Edger por encima deleje derecho.

3. Ahora, deslice la cuchilla delorillador hacia dentro del ejeizquierdo. La cara inclinada de lacuchilla deberá tocar el piso al hacergirar dicha cuchilla hacia el frente.

4. Inserte los pasadores en los ejesderecho e izquierdo.

Al orillar alrededor de los senderosy las jardineras, sería convenienteorillar a mayor profundidad (7.5 a 10cm - 3 a 4 pulg.). He aquí comoinstalar la orilladora Border Edger paraese propósito:

1. Desinstale las cuchillasexcavadoras/cultivadoras.

2. Deslice la cuchilla de laorilladora hacia dentro del eje derecho.La cara puntiaguda de la cuchilladeberá tocar el piso al hacer girardicha cuchilla hacia el frente.

3. Deslice la rueda por encima deleje izquierdo.

Cómo usar laorilladora BorderEdger

1. Coloque la excavadora MANTIS

de manera que la cuchilla de laorilladora esté paralela a la orilla deljardín, y la rueda esté por fuera (sobreel patio, en el pasillo, o lugar similar).(Ilustración 1)

2. Haga funcionar la excavadora ytire de la excavadora MANTIS haciaatrás y paralelamente a la orilla deljardín. (Ilustración 2)

MANIFESTACIÓN DE LA GARANTÍA DE CONTROL DE EMISIÓN DE CONTAMINANTES ENCALIFORNIA DE LA EPA.

SUS DERECHOS Y OBLIGACIONESLa Agencia de Protección del Medio Ambiente (EPA) y el Consejo de Recursos del Aire de California (C.A.R.B.) y el fabricante de este equipo tienen el gusto deexplicarle la garantía del sistema de control de emisión de contaminantes en su motor EPA Fase II / C.A.R.B, clasificación 2 del modelo del año 2000 yposteriores para motores de pequeña cilindrada y uso en todo terreno (SORE). Los motores nuevos para todo terreno deberán diseñarse, fabricarse y equiparsepara cumplir con las normas rigurosas contra la contaminación que ha establecido la EPA y C.A.R.B. La empresa Echo, Incorporated, deberá garantizar elsistema de control de emisiones instalado en todos los motores para uso en todo terreno durante los periodos de tiempo mencionados a continuación, siempre ycuando no se haya abusado, omitido por negligencia, o haber hecho labores inapropiadas de mantenimiento al motor instalado en su equipo para todo terreno.

En el sistema de control de emisiones se pudieran incluir componentes como lo es el carburador, el sistema de inyección de combustible, el sistema de ignición,y convertidor catalítico. También pudieran incluirse las mangueras, bandas, conexiones y otros ensambles relacionados con las emisiones.

En donde existan circunstancias cubiertas por la garantía, el fabricante reparará, sin costo alguno para el adquiriente, el motor instalado en los equipos quepudiera incluir su diagnóstico, refacciones y mano de obra.

COBERTURA DE LA GARANTÍA DEL FABRICANTE:Los motores de menor cilindrada para uso en la jardinería modelos 1995 están garantizados durante dos años. Si cualquiera de los componentes delmotor relacionados con las emisiones resultaran estar defectuosos, ese componente será reparado o sustituido por conducto del fabricante.

RESPONSABILIDADES DEL PROPIETARIO SEGÚN LA GARANTÍA:-Como propietario del motor instalado en el equipo, usted será responsable de su funcionamiento según los requisitos de mantenimiento indicados en elmanual del propietario. El fabricante recomienda que conserve todos los recibos que cubran los gastos de mantenimiento del motor de su equipo, noobstante esto, el fabricante no podrá negarse a cumplir con la garantía únicamente porque usted no haya conservado los recibos de los gastos incurridospor las fallas, como un medio para asegurarse de haberse cumplido con todas las labores de mantenimiento programadas.

-Como propietario del motor instalado en el equipo, no obstante lo anterior, usted deberá estar consciente de que pudiera negársele la cobertura de lagarantía, si el motor instalado en el equipo, o uno de sus componentes ha fallado debido al abuso, negligencia, mantenimiento inapropiado, omodificaciones hechas sin previa autorización.

Usted se responsabilizará de llevar hasta el centro de distribución del fabricante del motor aquí indicado en cuanto exista algún problema con el mismo. Lasreparaciones cubiertas por esta garantía deberán ser ejecutadas dentro de un lapso de tiempo razonable, sin exceder los 30 días.Si tuviese alguna duda relacionada con sus derechos y responsabilidades ante la garantía, comuníquese con el fabricante del producto.

EXPLICACIÓN DE LA GARANTÍA DE LOS DEFECTOS EN EL CONTROL DE CONTAMINANTES DELA EPA Y CALIFORNIA.

Esta es información adicional y detallada acerca de la GARANTÍA DE LOS DEFECTOS EN EL CONTROL DE CONTAMINANTES DE LA EPA Y CALIFORNIApara el motor instalado en su equipo.

¿QUÉ ES LO QUE CUBRE ESTA GARANTÍA?

El fabricante garantiza que esta unidad fue diseñada, fabricada y equipada cumpliendo las normas de emisiones de contaminantes, y que esta unidad no tienedefectos en los materiales utilizados para su fabricación, ni en la mano de obra, que pudiera ser la causa de la falta de cumplimiento de los requisitos pertinentesdurante el transcurso de dos (2) años. El periodo de garantía se inicia a partir de la fecha en la que el producto le fue entregado al comprador. Esta es la GARANTÍACONTRA LOS DEFECTOS relacionados con el control del sistema de emisiones de contaminantes.

¿CÓMO SE CORREGIRÁ UN COMPONENTE CUBIERTO POR LA GARANTÍA?Si existiese algún defecto en alguno de los componentes cubiertos por esta garantía, el Concesionario de Servicio Autorizado por el fabricante se hará cargo decorregir el defecto.Usted no deberá pagar nada por concepto del ajuste del componente, su reparación, o sustitución. Esto incluye cualquier gasto, por la mano de obra ydiagnóstico de los componentes garantizados, en los que haya intervenido el concesionario. Además de lo anterior, los componentes del motor que no esténcubiertos por esta garantía, pero que debido a una falla de este se determine la falla en algún otro componente, se respetará la garantía del componente afectado.Las reparaciones del sistema de emisiones de contaminantes cubiertas por esta garantía deberán ser ejecutadas dentro de un lapso de tiempo razonable, sinexceder los 30 días.

IMPORTANTESi el diagnóstico determina que no existe defecto alguno, la garantía de defectos en las emisiones dejará de ser la garantía pertinente.

¿CUÁLES COMPONENTES ESTÁN CUBIERTOS POR LA GARANTÍA CONTRA DEFECTOS EN EL SISTEMA DE EMISIONES DECONTAMINANTES EPA FASE II Y C.A.R.B 2000 Y MOTORES MÁS RECIENTES?• Cualquier componente relacionado con la emisión de contaminantes que no se haya considerado para su “mantenimiento necesario” (Ver en el manual del

operario la sección del motor “PROGRAMA DE SERVICIO DE MANTENIMIENTO”) será reparado o sustituido dentro de la vigencia de la garantía. Elcomponente reparado o sustituido quedará protegido bajo el periodo de tiempo remanente de la garantía de los defectos en las emisiones.

• Cualquier componente relacionado con la emisión de contaminantes que deba ser sustituido durante el periodo de “mantenimiento necesario” (Ver en elmanual del operario la sección del motor “PROGRAMA DE SERVICIO DE MANTENIMIENTO”) quedará garantizado durante el periodo de tiempo previo alpunto que se haya establecido como primer sustitución programada de ese componente. Cualquier componente similar que sea reparado o sustituido bajo lagarantía deberá ser garantizado durante el remanente del periodo previo a la primera sustitución programada de ese componente y hasta ese punto.

• Cualquier componente sustituido con la aprobación previa del fabricante podrá ser utilizado para el rendimiento operativo de cualquier mantenimiento bajogarantía o reparaciones hechas a los componentes relacionados con las emisiones, y deberán ser provistos sin costo alguno, si dicho componente está aún bajola cobertura de la garantía.

• Podrá utilizarse cualquier componente a sustituir que sea el equivalente al original en su rendimiento y durabilidad cuando se hagan reparaciones o labores demantenimiento fuera de la garantía, mas no reducirá las obligaciones del fabricante establecidas en la garantía.

• Es propietario deberá responsabilizarse de desempeñar las labores de mantenimiento necesarias según se ha descrito en el manual del operario.
