Von Laue’s blackbody theorem
• In fact a similar idea can be traced back to von Laue (Ann Phys. (Leipzig) [4] 44, 1197 (1914))
• He noted that in a Planck’s blackbody theory the total energy should not depend on the shape of the cavity
• The local density of states N(ω,r) of modes at frequency ω is independent of the position r, provided r is a few wavelengths distant from the boundary

• Haydock, Heine and Kelly J Phys C 8, 2591 (1975)
• The local Green function at some atomic site, 0, G0(ε) at energy ε is computed as a continued fraction, each term of which depends only on the local environment
• The local density of states at site 0N0(ε) = -1/π Im[G0(ε+iη)]
is therefore also a local quantity

Comments
• There is obvious similarity to the KKR mehod, as described by Prof Ebert. The theory calculates a Green function G0(ε) in the complex energy ε plane, from which the density of states and other quantities can be found
• Interestingly Bloch’s theorem is NOT USED. Therefore quasicrystals, or even completely random systems can be studied just as easily as periodic systems

Sparse matrices
Most of the matrix elements are zero, only a small set are non-zero. This is a SPARSE MATRIX.It can be stored by storing only the non-zero elements! Eg for each row i store list of the values of j for which Hij are nonzero. The storage needed is of order N, where N is the matrix dimension (not N2 as for a standard matrix).
