From the Desk of Superintendent Dr. Rick Jones

As I write this update to you I am amazed that it is already the middle of March! In my first year as Superintendent of Napavine School District

it seems the months of this school year have disap-peared rapidly. Our excellent teaching staff has been very busy ensuring that all students are learning the curriculum. State mandated assessments will be conducted next month and I am confident that our students will continue to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement.

Extracurricular Activities Our just concluded winter season was very successful for  our  new  wrestling  program,  our  girls’  basketball

team and our knowledge bowl team. All three teams were involved in state competition and we are very proud of their achievements.

Teacher-Principal Evaluation Pilot Our state has adopted a new teacher and principal evaluation tool, and this year nine classroom teachers and our two building administrators are piloting the new instrument. We have adopted a research based instructional framework based on the work of Dr. Robert Marzano. Those involved in the pilot program are learning the instructional strategies that research has shown ensure the highest student academic success. Additional staff will participate in the project next year, and all certificated staff will be evaluated in the new process in the 2015-16  school  year.    I’m

excited about the new evaluation tool and our district focus on learning the best teaching strategies. I am also proud of our educators for their ongoing commit-ment to improve their instructional skills. Our district embraces the philosophy of continuous improvement for our organization. More detailed information regarding  Marzano’s  instructional  framework  is   available online at our district website.

District Technology Plan This year a committee of district educators and com-

munity members has been reviewing and updating our three-year technology plan. Our work includes identifying key concepts that students will obtain and prioritizing needed equipment upgrades across the school district. Our technology plan is available online at our district website.

Curriculum Adoption Also in preparation for next year, a committee of teachers is reviewing Reading, Language Arts and Writing materials. It is our goal to identify curriculum that will be purchased and used in our classrooms for the 2013-14 school year. This curriculum adoption combined with our staff develop-ment will strengthen our student academic achievement in

these critical curriculum areas.

Levy Passes! I would like to acknowledge the community support for our recent levy. Our voters passed a three-year levy in the amount of $925,000 annually with a 62% yes vote. In addition to meeting staff training needs and upgrading our technology the levy dollars will also be used to complete much needed facilities and maintenance repairs across the school district. We are extremely

grateful for the support of our community.

It is an honor for me to be Superintendent of the Napavine School District. I continue to learn every day about the wonderful education that our students are receiving, the dedication of our staff and the support of our community. I am available should you have questions or wish to talk with me about our school district, and can be reached at 262-3303 or by e-mail at [email protected].

2013 was the first year of a stand alone team at Napavine High School. Napavine has been involved with several co-op programs in the past (Toledo, Onalaska and Adna) but this is the first year Napavine has hosted it's own high school team.

Two of Napavine's senior's made school history by becoming the first wrestlers to place at the WIAA State Wrestling Championship on February 16, 2013 in the Tacoma Dome. Zach West placed 3rd in the Boys 2B 160 lb. division and Cassie Edwards finished 5th in the Girls 112 lb. category.

Napavine also had 3 wrestlers earn state academic awards...Kaytn Newcomb, Bryan Gibbons and Cassie Edwards. Napavine also fielded a middle school team for only the second time in school history. Napavine also has a youth wrestling team that competes in the Lewis County Youth Sports League.

Napavine was the only team in the league to qualify every wrestler who participated in the League Tournament on to the Regional Tourna-ment by placing every wrestler in the top 5 of each weight division. Wrestling is on the mat in Napavine!

Wrestling Team Makes History

They placed 3rd in districts and 4th in the state. Way to go ladies! Team awards go to: MVP: Demi Sahlinger, Inspirational/Rebounding: Josie Dekoker, Leadership/Captain: Alexa Peters, Most Improved: Hailey Dickinson, Defensive Player of the Year: Kalli Brown. All League: Honorable Mention: Alexa Peters, 2nd Team: Josie Dekoker, 1st Team: Demi Sahlinger. Demi also represented Napavine in the All State Game.

PIE the Principal? The Elementary is having a PIE contest. At the last assembly, Principal Moore challenged the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to memorize the first 100 digits of PI, you know that number (symbol: π)  that starts with 3.1415... and continues to infinity? If students memorize the digits, they will have the opportunity to pie the princi-pal or other staff volunteers in the face at our next assembly on April 18th.

$3,600 for the Library The Scholastic Book Fair sponsored by the PTA brought in over $3,600 for the elementary library! A huge thanks to Robyn Yocum, Jody Low and Jodi Rushton and all of the dedicated volunteers for supporting literacy at Napavine Elementary!

Teara Cook and Janelle McPeake help set up the heART of Napavine display.

School Board Highlights School Board Communication In this, and future editions of the district news- letter, this space will be reserved for updates from our School Board. Recent highlights of Board activity are as follows:

Board Appreciation Last month School Board Appreciation was celebrated across our state. We presented our Board members with certificates of appreciation for their dedication to our school district. We recognize and appreciate the commitment of time that is made to this volunteer position. In addition to participating in two board meetings monthly, Board members also attend workshops to improve their skills. They must also review a great deal of information to be prepared for the important decisions that are made at regular board

meetings. We appreciate the contributions that our Board members make for our students!

Board Self-Assessment Napavine Board members recently partici-pated in a workshop with a consultant from the Washington School Directors Association. Board members individually completed a self-assessment evaluating governance, expectations for students, district climate, and communication. They reviewed the survey results and began the process of setting goals for the 2013-14 school year. Through this work our Board members are demonstrating a commitment to continuous movement.
