Innovative community based & eco-friendly adventures

Page 2: Tiger Trail 2013 Catalog

We do our best to be Innovative, Responsible and Fair while providing Inspirational adventures for people of all ages!

Tiger Trail has been internationally recognized as a pioneer, creating new and unique adventures for travels to participate and responsibly in tourism by setting new standards. Since its inception in the year 2000, Tiger Trail has specialized in small group inspirational experiences which strive to be unique. One of our main goals is to provide meaningful excursions to individuals and groups who wish to experience Lao life in purity, and are willing to respect nature, tradition, and culture.

It takes a lot of enthusiastic, dedicated people to create Tiger Trail trips in urban and remote areas of Laos. With a workforce of more than 50 full time travel enthusiasts and volunteers from around the globe, our team maintains a strong emphasis on quality to maintain the highest standards available. We keep this spirit of adventure in mind when creating our tours, but also go beyond the surface and use our resources and inuence to create sustainable change in communities.

Combining Customer Satisfaction & Community Support is our No. 1 priority

Create a lasting experience for every single visitor

Engage, manage and maintain support of community work as our social responsibility

Manage guest concerns and issues in a timely manner, no matter what the circumstance.

WHY BOOK WITH US... What's the difference?Tiger Trail invests in sustainable tourism (tourisme equitable, nachhaltiger Tourismus...) and treats the areas we visit, and their residents, respectfully and responsibly. We provide a higher standard of service AND provide local communities with assistance and fi nancial capital. We charge slightly higher prices because a large percentage of the tour price goes directly back to the community. By going on a 'Fair Trek' tour or to the Elephant Village you are sponsoring the community and the local Elephants.

So, what IS the dierence?• We develop exciting new ideas and products and

bring them to the local market fi rst.• We focus on rural development and bring income to local communities through tourism.

Fair Trek• We invented Fair Trek in order to benefi t locals. • We cooperate directly with 7 villages as well as local

authorities (NTA and PTO & SNV) to maintain a mutually benefi cial relationship with the local people.• We created a village fund to fairly distribute the income from our tours to 7 villages.

Elephant Village (The Elephant Park Project):• We provide a permanent home to our elephants, create local

jobs for villagers and educate travelers about Lao Elephants.• We have a full-time vetenerian and elephant care sta of

professionals from around the world (Germany, Thailand)• We have built an Elephant hospital to provide free medical

care to our animals and others (even our competitors)! • We grow or buy elephant food from local farmers to

provide constant income and discourage slash-and-burn farming.

Many say they want to be responsible travellers, but who REALLY is? Low-priced, run-of-the-mill tours are everywhere...

Responsible community based tourism, you fi nd here!

YOU make the difference!

What is Fair Trek?“Fair Trek” is a Luang Prabang based initiative between villages, the government, local tour operators and NGO’s. It supports villages, whenever guests enter the protected area and maximizes positive impacts on the communities. Fair Trek also created the Village Development Fund, which provides fi nancial assistance towards improving the local area. Two dollars per person per trip is allocated to the Fund in addition to the “local payment” fees, which fund local tour guides and guest families. By spending the night in a homestay, for example, you are directly contributing to that village. A limited number of guests can take part in daily activities in the protected area.

Why should I book a Fair Trek?“Fair Trek” oers a new alternative to mainstream tourism practices. “Fair Trek” is based on good sustainable and community-based principles. This means local people will directly benefi t from your tour fees and by participating you will be providing much needed income and job opportunities to the rural locals. Local authorities and NGO’s and volunteers ensure the quality of the trip as well as monitor the impact of the Project on the local community.

The Village Development FundFair Trek is a young innovative project and has been collecting money since 2007. The operating company has no access to this fund and it is only allowed to be used to improve local infrastructure profi ting the entire community. Future projects include improving the water supply, building irrigation systems, creating communication networks, introducing solar pannels for electricity, supporting local schools and other related projects.

The Future of Fair TrekIn the fi rst year after project initiation, Tiger Trail brought over 3.000 visitors to the protected area. We look forward to showing this beautiful region to even more travelers in the future. We have also started some new pojects like the ClaySchool in Ban Na Luang. The rst ever Eco Clay built school oering two classrooms and a new library to the childrenand families of B an Na Luang.

Page 5: Tiger Trail 2013 Catalog

If I go to the Elephant Village, where does my money go?If you go Elephant riding or take part in the Mahout Experience about 35% of the cost goes directly to the Elephants! Elephant XL Camp was created in 2003 to protect Asian Elephants and bring them away from brutal logging work. Now named the Elephant Village, the project provides the Elephants with food, trained sta, medical care, natural environment and supports the local community ( turn to page 14 to fi nd out more ). For example, 35% of the tour fee for a half day Elephant ride will be used to care for the Elephants at Elephant Village ( based on 4 persons going ).

Where does your money go?If I go on a Trek, where does my money go?If you go trekking, kayaking, and/or biking with Fair Trek about 33% of the tour cost goes back to the community. Fair Trek supports the locals and protects the environment in the trekking area. For example, when you go on a two day trek the local people will receive around 33% of your total tour fee ( based on 2 persons going). On a one day trek without overnight stay, 24% of your tour fees will still go directly into the local community that you will be visiting.

Kuang Si Waterfall Trek – One day Trek

Medium- for everyone (3-4 hrs. trekking)

Every Tuk-Tuk in town wants to take you to this waterfall- but getting there is half the fun (and our

way is much more beautiful). Starting from Luang Prabang we will drive out through the valley

south east of Luang Prabang and arrive at the Long Lao village to explore the life and culture of

the Khamu and Hmong villages (local minorities). The trail then leads through fi elds and gardens

before reaching the forested mountains with wild scenery and steeper climbs. Your guide will

point out all the natural remedies through the forest and take you to explore a cave that locals

used as bomb shelter during the Second Indochina war!! We will arrive at one of the crystal clear

springs that feed into the famous Kuang Si waterfall and fi nally down the steep waterfall where you

can rip o shoes and socks or sandals and jump in. You can also see bears in the Kuang Si forest

sanctuary protected by “Free The Bears” initiative. This NGO helps to set up proper care and areas

to keep the animals healthy... the perfect "feel good" trek. FT-1KS

"Our New Trail" – uncharted terrain!Medium- Diffi cult - Three Day Trek-(Day 1: 4+ hrs., Day 2: 6+ hrs., Day 3: 4+ hrs. trekking) NEW program, NEW area, UNIQUE experience. This tour focuses on the Hmong communities and Lao Sung (Hmong) life style. You will overnight in very basic village home stays with families and close to Lao rural life on the countryside – bring the spirit of an explorer and an easy going attitude! We will begin the three-day trekking adventure about

60km out of Luang Prabang… along the beautiful Nam Ou river, stopping at the Khamu village (Pha Phong) and continuing along local trails to a small Hmong community in the mountains, where we will be spending the night. We will spend the evening with the village families and the children, who will come to see the foreign long-nose “falangs”. After an

early breakfast, we will set o for a long day of trekking to the Hmong village,

where you will be greeted with another warm, but curious welcome. You

walk over small hills and up and down to the higher areas where the Hmong

normally live. FT-3OPTION: If you are interested in a more in depth experience with Hmong

culture you may stay in this village for another day. You will than follow a

normal day of a local family, going out into the fi eld and forests… but the

village will put you to work! This will create a four day excursion. FT-4On the last day of this trekking adventure, your guide will lead you through

a few more villages on your way back towards Luang Prabang with fi nal

transportation in one of the local Songthaews. Our local, Hmong guides

makes this a truly unique experience and you will take home more than just

nice memories…

Two Day Trek & Khamu village stayMedium- Diffi cult (Day 1: 6-7 hrs., Day 2: 4-5 hrs. trekking)Meet and greet the villagers. Spend the night with a family. This hiking tour combines both the “Longkut” and “Tinpha” treks through our exclusive trekking area, near the highest mountain range in the vicinity of Luang Prabang, and to the Elephant Park Project (upon request). This trek is a great introduction to the dierent ethnic minority villages and their centuries-old lifestyles as it includes an overnight stay in a family home in the Khamu village. FT-2

What YOU can do:• Take a scenic ride on an elephant AND help

Elephant Camp Xieng Lom, Elephant XL, now known as the Elephant Village was the fi rst camp in Laos with the aim to protect local elephants! As forests disappear, elephants that formerly worked in logging are often neglected. The aim is to give these elephants a brighter future. The Elephants have been retired from logging work and given a new home. Experienced mahouts (elephant keepers) and veterinarians assist the elephants in adapting to their new environment and sick or older elephants are given special attention.

The project oers the elephants a more comfortable retirement by providing professional medical care, nutritious food, caring sta, and a natural environment away from roads and cities. It also provides jobs to local people and supports the community, as well as promoting rural development in the Luang Prabang area. The village also provides both communities and local businesses with a model of sustainable tourism that successfully links conservation with adventure travel. Profi ts from the project help fund nearby Xieng Lom School. The Elephant Village includes an Elephant hospital to provide free medical care to the animals and others (even competitors)! A full-time vetenarian lives in the camp.

Local villagers sell Bananas for the Elephants at the Elephant Village and so help support their community!

Experience the life of a MahoutThe Elephants have had a rough life- but now they are in retirement in the Elephant Village, regularly examined by a vet and under close observation by internationally-renowned specialists. They seem to be enjoying their lives at the village and the daily tourist rides are easy work which provides them with necessary exercise. All the female elephants were employed in the logging industry (never in the tourism industry!) Logging is hard work for elephants and can be quite dangerous. Accidents happen regularly, and too often elephants are not well cared for. The Mahouts, on the other hand, take excellent care of the individual elephants and you can too!

Stay with our Mahout team and get to know one of the Elephants! The Mahout Experience will teach you to:• get on your Elephant (without a ladder)• use commands to 'go', 'turn', 'stop', etc. • follow the Elephant trails• guide your Elephant out to the jungle• bathe with your Elephant • feed your Elephant

You will also learn the history of theindividual Elephants and the problems facing Lao Elephants today!

Package exclusively with small groups!!!

I'm 29 years old and have a sweet temperament. Before I came to the Elephant Village I

worked in the logging industry and was severely maltreated. Wounds show that I was once

stabbed and also given drugs so I could work harder. I'm half blind because while I was

skidding trees, a chain broke and caused me to fall forward into some branches. One branch

lacerated my right eye and since then I've been blind on that side. When I rst moved here,

it was a bit hard for me and took me awhile to get used to my new surroundings and my new

mahout. But now I love it! My Mahout, Mr. Leah, jokingly calls me “dirty brat” because I

enjoy throwing mud on myself (and him) after a bath. By the way, I'm the fastest Elephant at

the camp! And the youngest!

Afterwards, the guide will teach you how to ride without a seat, get on without help and even steer (using your feet!) Then take a break at our Elephant Village House - a restored French colonial period

farm house. Have lunch with a scenic view over the river followed by Elephant riding. If you would prefer, you can also stay overnight in the village or at the Lao Spirit Resort.

Your activities continue at The Elephant Village and you will spend more time getting to know the Elephants and then guide your Elephant into the jungle. You can spend the rest of the day at Tad Sae Waterfall, relaxing and swimming before dinner if you have booked the 2 day tour. The next morning you meet the Elephants again to feed and wash them (you can even take a bath yourself)!
