Soccer Club Swap Shop Evo-Stik North Programme of the Season, 2016-17

FROM THE EDITOR: WELCOME TO VOLAIR PARK

Good afternoon and welcome to Volair Park for this afternoon’s match in Evo-Stik North. A special greeting is extended to this afternoon’s Gold Sponsors, Morecrofts LLP. We trust that their party will enjoy themselves.

We are always delighted to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Glossop North End to Prescot. The two clubs have met many times over the years and fixtures between the Cables and the Hillmen are always keenly fought affairs, as today’s game will surely be. Hello, also to today’s third team: the match officials.

It goes without saying that our last home fixture, against Colne, was the proverbial ‘bad day at the office’. However, every team has matches like that from time to time. From my vantage point up in the Press Box, it was clear that there was plenty of effort being expended, but Colne are always well-organised and difficult to play against. They had a game plan which they executed extremely well. The mark of good teams is how they cope with setbacks like that match and the players responded magnificently by winning at Clitheroe seven days ago.

The games don’t get any easier; today’s fixture is the start of a block of fixtures which sees us play four home match-es out of five, with the away trip being at title-chasing Scarborough Athletic. It is the sort of run of games which can define a season.

However, the magnificent support we get here at Volair Park can only benefit the players and staff as they seek to seize the opportunity they have created through skill and hard work. Please give the lads your backing as you do each and every week and above all else, enjoy the match.

t’s a classic quiz question — which is the smallest town in England to have

been the home of a top divi-sion football club? The answer: Glossop.

Of course, it’s a long time since that 1899-1900 season, but the Hillmen (or Hillsmen, as they were known back then, in honour of owner Sir Samuel Hill-Wood) supporters always enjoy recounting the proud his-tory of the club. However, more

recently they were given some more moments that they will talk about in the town for years to come and are hopeful of pro-viding a few more.

Founded in 1886, Glossop North End began by playing friendly amateur matches. They entered the North Cheshire League in 1890 and introduced profes-sional players in 1894. Their Chairman and benefactor was local cotton magnate Sir Samuel Hill-Wood who later left to become Chairman of Woolwich

Arsenal. In 1898, on their third application, they were admitted to the Football League.

In their first season, by finish-ing runners-up to Manchester City, they won promotion to the Football League Division One. Unfortunately, they spent just one year in the division, the best victory being a 3-0 result against Nottingham Forest.

Glossop played in League Division Two until the end of the 1914-15 season and in 1908-09

reaching the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup where they lost to Bristol City in a replay. They ceased playing during the lat-ter part of the First World War, but were reformed by Oswald Partington MP, who had been club captain in the 1890’s.

Between the wars the club played in the Lancashire Combination and the Manchester League, of which they were champions in 1927-28. They also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions.

Matches again ceased during the Second World War, Glossop rejoining the Manchester League afterwards. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949.

In 1955 they moved from their original ground at North Road to the present home at Surrey Street. Since then they have played in the Lancashire Combination, the Manchester and the Cheshire Leagues before becoming founder mem-bers of the North West Counties League in 1982.

Glossop spent most of their NWCFL life in the First (now Premier) division, although much of it was spent at the lower end fighting against rel-egation, whilst the club itself fought for survival, victim of a criminally corrupt owner in the 1980s. It was only the hard work of board members and supporters kept the club afloat after the disgraced regime.

There was a little success: the club was Manchester Premier Cup winners in 1997 and 1998, and Derbyshire Cup winners in 2000-01.

More recently though, things have improved for the Hillmen. 2008-09 saw an once-in-a-life-time day in the history of the club after the side embarked on a terrific FA Vase run which saw North End reach the Final at Wembley.

Whilst the Final saw a disap-pointing result — losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay — the run awak-ened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town. There is now a thriving Supporters Club, which has funded makeovers to the ground and helped gener-ate interest in the club home and away.

This sparked a dramatic over-haul that saw a refurbishment of changing rooms, a new club-house, a new covered standing area and new perimeter fenc-ing. Ground grading for the EVO-STIK League was achieved, and now what was a required was a side to make that count.

Manager Chris Willcock and his team provided that in 2014-15.

That season will live long in the memories of everyone involved in the club. At one point 21 points behind Runcorn Linnets, but with games in hand due to cup runs; they were required to play three games a week to play

catch up. However, the players kept on achieving.

Firstly they clinched a return to Wembley with a two-leg-ged win over Cornwall’s AFC St Austell having defeated strong outfits like Worksop, Dunston UTS and Shaw Lane Aquaforce. Once-in-a-lifetime? Pah!

Then, having relentless-ly chased down the Linnets they clinched the League with a 3-0 win over Nelson with three games to play. Next they completed a League and Cup ‘double’ with a 2-0 victory over Atherton Collieries in the NWCFL Challenge Cup.

Wembley beckoned, but again the result was disappointing, losing 2-1 to North Shields as the long season finally caught up with them. However, the pride of being a Hillman had never been a higher and the feeling of watching your team take the lead at Wembley is hard to beat.

Willcock continued at the helm throughout the club’s first two seasons in the EVO-STIK League, qualifying for the Play-offs in 2015-16 and just miss-ing out the year afterwards. He and the club then parted ways.

Paul Phillips and Steve Halford make up the new management duo for 2017-18. Hillmen fans are excited to see what they will achieve at the club!

He had previously played three seasons for the club at full back, including in 2014-15, when he played in the team that won the NWCFL League and Cup ‘double’, and reached the FA Vase final at Wembley. Ask him about his goal at Dunston.

Mark HaslamA full back, Mark is another play-er who has regularly played under Steve and Paul, turning out for their sides at Ashton United and Mossley. Having signed for GNE in the sum-mer of 2017, expect to see Mark sprinting up and down the flank.

2014-15. Steve, who counts Mossley and Salford City among his former clubs, didn’t have a lot of time in that season to bed in at the club but now has a new opportunity to make an impression on the Glossop support.

David YoungSimply put, Dave Young is a club leg-end. Closing in on 500 appearances for the club having made his debut as a 17 year old, Dave captained GNE twice at Wembley having played for the club since the early 2000s. He has even managed to squeeze in spells at Mossley, Curzon Ashton and Ashton United in a whole-hearted career.

Chris BaguleyA free scoring midfielder, Chris came through the youth and reserve ranks at Oldham Athletic and has repre-sented England at Under-19 and Under-20 levels. He has a wealth of experience having previously played for, amongst others, FC United, Salford City and Ashton United.

Jason HillJason spent 2016-17 at Mossley. Known at Seel Park as a box-to-box midfielder, he can also play at cen-tre half. His formative years were spent in the Stockport County youth set-up, where he played against a Manchester United Youth side that included guest players Paul Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, which ranks as a personal favourite game for the Red Devil-supporting Jason.

Connor Martin20 year old Connor joined GNE in the summer of 2017 from Trafford FC, where last season he found his appearances limited due to the form of striker Aaron Burns. Still very young, Connor will be looking to establish himself within the Glossop North End set-up.

Liam Wood19 year old Liam has just come out of full-time football, having spent time on the books of Bolton Wanderers, Oldham Athletic, Blackpool and Fleetwood Town in his youth career. Manchester born Liam is a central midfielder with an eye for a thread-ed through-ball.

Ben DeeganBen is an experienced striker, who has accumulated a huge amount of game nous at FC United, Nantwich Town, Ashton United and New Mills, and was part of the Warrington Town team that won the Evo-Stik North Division One in 2015-16. He also played in FC United’s famous victory over Rochdale in the FA Cup, which he ranks as his favourite game to have played in.

Jude OyiboJude is a winger who has also played for Altrincham, Stockport Town and most recently Stalybridge Celtic. His pace down the flank makes him a fans’ favourite, and after joining from Celtic he generated some excite-ment in pre-season.

Liam BrownhillLiam is a 30 year old full-back who joined the Hillmen from Trafford FC in the summer of 2017. He also lists FC United, Ashton United, Chester, Droylsden, Altrincham and Stockport County as his previous clubs. During his stint at Witton Albion, Liam was selected for the England C Squad – a team made up of the best non-league players in the country.

Kyle RileyA strong striker, Kyle was part of Chris Willcock’s GNE squad in the 2013-14 season. He then moved on to Winsford Town, for whom he became captain and scored 23 goals in 2016-17. He rejoined Glossop for the 2017-18 season.

anager Marko Markelic and his backroom team have resigned from their posts at East Midlands Counties League club Borrowash Victoria.

Markelic has decided that it is time for a new challenge and he has take Borrowash as far as he can.

A statement from the club reads: “Borrowash Victoria FC would like to thanks Marko for going above and beyond the call of duty. As well as managing the squad, acting as secretary for the club, kit washing week in week out and the list goes on...

“Marko has been a fantastic leader for this club and we wish him every success in his next venture.

“We would also like to thank his management team, along with the players Marko has brought to the club.

“Marko`s man management skills have been the best that we have seen throughout the club and his exceptional skills of working with and bringing in

youth players have been second to none. Many of these players have now gone on to play at a higher level in the footballing Pyramid.

“The commitment shown from Marko over the last three years has been first class. This has been proven after turning down managerial roles at a higher level on numerous occasions.

“After handing in his resignation, the chairman and vice-chairman then explained that the running of the club had taken its toll and has been taken as far as possible.

“They then explained that the club would then resign from the league.

“It is a sad time for Borrowash Victoria as a club and a statement regarding the next steps will be issued in due course.

“But for the time being, we would like to thank Marko for taking the club this far and for the profes-sionalism he has shown during his time in a role that he has exceeded in”.

our goals in the opening half an hour from forward Chris Almond against his former set Prescot Cables on the way to another comprehensive victory away at Skelmersdale Utd. The New Year’s Day fixture was played at Volair Park where

the hosts are now tenants.

Almond’s first, and probably the pick of his goals, came after just four minutes. He picked up the ball centrally around 30 yards from goal, dribbled his way past three opponents before placing a cool fin-ish past United keeper Callum Roberts.

A second followed soon after as Almond was able to tap home at the far post from a James Edgar left wing cross. Almond completed his hat-trick on 16 minutes with a flicked header from a free kick into the box, Edgar once more with the assist.

Cables continued to dominate the first half and after Jordan Wynne was denied what looked a certain penalty Almond stroked home his and his side’s fourth goal just short of the half hour.

Cables had the ball in the net once more before the break, Edgar left frustrated by an offside flag.

Skelmersdale United came out with much more purpose in the second period. Hill had gone close with one effort before Alasdair Redmayne was very

unlucky to see an effort strike the inside of the post and agonisingly away across the face of goal. Meanwhile Reece Fishwick and substitute Jordan Southworth had chances for Cables at the other end.

On 56 minutes Cables made it 5-0, Lloyd Dean with a free header at the far post after a succes-sion of corners. Dan Burns was next to trouble the scoresheet on 84 minutes, the Cables winger firing home his first goal for the club after Wynne’s excel-lent free kick had beaten Roberts and cannoned down off the crossbar.

The ‘goal of the game’ however, belonged to the hosts,Skelmersdale United. Within a minute of Burns’ maiden strike another Cables free kick into the box was cleared and United broke down the left, full back Jack Fleming making a lung-bursting run from one box to the other to meet Molyneux’s cross and finish acrobatically.

There was one final chance which fell to Burns who saw his effort clip the top of the crossbar and away, Cables completing their festive fixtures with three wins from three and an impressive fifteen goal haul in the process.

Victory, coupled with South Shields’ home defeat to Scarborough Athletic, took Prescot Cables to the top of the Evostik League North Division as 2018 got under way.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to Valter Fernandez, who has won the vote for the December Player of the Month. He will be presented with his prize after today’s match. The award is sponsored by Poco Coffee, who make fantastic cof-fee and have branches in Prescot, Kirkby, Earlestown and Llandudno.

s remarkable as it might seem these days, our visitors this afternoon once oc-

cupied a loftier perch within the football pecking order than the clubs that would become Man-chester United and Leicester City.

In 1898, with the Football League a decade old, a match-rigging scandal led to wide-spread changes to the com-petition. The top two clubs in Division Two played a series of

‘Test Matches’ against the bot-tom two clubs in Division One, but the final match between Stoke and Burnley was rigged, with the subsequent 0-0 draw enabling both clubs to play in the top flight the following sea-son, denying Newcastle United promotion and relegating Black-burn Rovers. The subsequent fu-rore led to both divisions being expanded by two clubs. Black-burn and Newcastle won the vote determining which two sides would take the additional places in the top tier, while Dar-

wen, who had been voted out of Division Two regained their League membership alongside newcomers Barnsley, Glossop and New Brighton Tower.

In some respects, Glossop’s el-evation to the Football League was a surprise, given that they had finished fourth from bottom of the Midland League during 1897-98. North End had, howev-er, been runners-up in the previ-ous campaign and were politi-cally well connected, given that the club was backed by local in-

dustrialist Samuel Hill-Wood.

The Hillsmen made a winning start to their Football League career, defeating Blackpool at North Road. Glossop’s next home match, against Newton Heath, saw them taste defeat for the first time but they hit five goals in home matches on five occasions, against Luton Town, Burton Swifts, New Brighton Tower, Gainsborough Trinity and Darwen. Woolwich Arsenal also tasted defeat when they travelled to Derbyshire, while Glossop won away to eventual champions Manchester City. All of these victories helped North End to finish as runners-up to City, making the clubs the first to be automatically promoted to the top flight.

Changing their name to plain ‘Glossop FC’, in deference to Preston North End, the Derby-shire side made a winning start to their stay in the First Division, defeating Burnley 2-0 at North Road. However, they had a harsh lesson in the realities of life at the top level, losing 9-0 at As-ton Villa. A victory in their fourth match, at home to Nottingham Forest on 16th September 1899 would be Glossop’s last until 16th December. This rare win was all the more remarkable for the fact it saw eventual Cham-pions Aston Villa defeated 1-0, which at least gave Glossop some ‘revenge’ for their shel-lacking at Villa Park.

That was a rare bright spot in a difficult campaign; all of the next seven matches ended in

defeat and while Glossop did beat Blackburn Rovers on 27th February 1900, that would prove to be their last victory of the season. Their final match in the First Division took place on 28th April 1900 and ended in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Glossop FC remained in the Sec-ond Division until the outbreak of the First World War but, hav-ing finished bottom of the table in 1914-15, were not re-elected at the end of hostilities. The end of the club’s spell in the Football League also saw the departure of Samuel Hill-Wood, who had been less involved in the club following his election as the MP for Glossop in 1910. Mr Hill-Wood would later join the Board of Arsenal in 1929; his family remains involved with the Gun-ners to this day.

For Glossop, those distant days provide a ‘claim to fame’ al-luded to on page 4 of this issue of Tiger Talk; the town remains the smallest ever to boast a top-flight club. Glossop is the second-smallest town to have hosted League football – only Irthlingborough, which was where Rushden & Diamonds were based – has a smaller pop-ulation.

The 1914-15 team, pictured top left, might have been the last to play for the club in the Football League but they are just a small number of the many players to have turned out for this club, which has endured since 1886.

THE FORM GUIDE

LAST 10 LEAGUE MATCHES

The table above shows the form of each club within Evo-Stik North over the last ten League games played by each club.

While it is only a snapshot, it does provide an illustration of the state of play within the division, up to and including last Saturday, 13th January.

One point to note is just how good last weekend’s win at Clitheroe was. Any side that has won seven out of ten League matches is clearly in good form and the Blues are always tough opposition. Similarly, our guests this afternoon will be dangerous opponents; any side that wins 40% of its matches over a 10 game spell and emerges with a positive goal difference must be treated with respect.

hris Almond for Prescot Cables and Alex Curran for Colne brought the best out of the respective keepers either side of half time during a first half which was instantly forgettable.

It was Colne who opened the scoring on 48 minutes, full back Lee Pugh sweeping the ball home from a corner.

The visitors sealed the points on 74 minutes when Curran was played through, neatly sidestepped keeper Ben Barnes and finished calmly.

James Edgar hit the side-netting and Reece McNally hit the bar for Cables late on but the visitors held on for a deserved victory.

A CASUAL RELATIONSHIP

TWO FAMOUS CLUBS ARE TO

SHARE A GROUND

ingstonian and Corinthian-Casuals have announced their intention to establish a long-term groundsharing arrangement, which will see both clubs based at

Casuals’ base in Tolworth.

The Ks have been playing ‘home’ matches at Leatherhead this season after leaving their former home, Kingsmeadow. The stadium has been con-trolled by AFC Wimbledon after they bought the ground from a former owner of Kingstonian; the Dons have now sold the ground to Chelsea to raise funds to develop a new stadium in Plough Lane. The Premier League club intend to use Kingsmeadow as a base for their Reserve, Youth and Ladies teams.

AFC Wimbledon made a donation of £1,000,000 to Kingstonian from the proceeds of the ground sale and some of this money will now be spent on devel-oping the facilities at King George’s Fields. In a joint statement released on Tuesday 16th January, the two clubs said that: “The Directors of Kingstonian together with the Corinthian-Casuals Executive Committee are working towards plan-ning a thriving long-term future for both clubs. With this in mind, talks regarding a partnership between both clubs and the consequent develop-ment of shared facilities whilst remaining indepen-dent are in an advanced stage, as we look to ensure both Corinthian-Casuals and Kingstonian flourish

K

Page 31: Tiger Talk - Amazon S3 · Glossop spent most of their NWCFL life in the First (now Premier) division, although much of it was spent at the lower end fighting against rel-egation,

in a first-class environment at King George’s Fields within the Royal Borough of Kingston-Upon-Thames.

“Both clubs are extremely grate-ful to everyone involved for embracing this ground share with positivity and grace as we move forward together.”

The partnership being estab-lished by the two Bostik League clubs is similar to the arrange-ment in place in North London, which has brought Silver Jubilee Park in Kingsbury back into use as the home ground of Bostik League club Hendon and a reformed Edgware Town, both of whom lost their original grounds to devel-opment. It brings Kingstonian back into their home borough, while for the staunchly amateur Corinthian-Casuals groundshar-ing is not a new concept. The club had never had a ground of its own prior to taking over the King George’s Fields site from the defunct Tolworth FC in 1988 and had played at a variety of venues, including The Oval and Queen’s Club.

The first task will be to ensure that King George’s Fields meets the requirements of the FA ‘C’ Grade, which sets out the mini-mum ground requirements for Step 3, which is the level at which Kingstonian play. This work will need to be completed before 31st March in accordance with National League System rules.

This week’s announcement would seem to mean that there is little or no prospect of Kingstonian constructing a new stadium under their own steam. Having played at Richmond Road in the centre of Kingston until the mid 1980s, the club sold their site and built Kingsmeadow as a replacement. The club then ran into financial trouble around the turn of the century after a run of successes in the FA Trophy and the Football Conference led the then Board to sanction ground improvements that turned out to be ruinous-ly expensive. The club entered administration and was bought by a family of speculators, who made £2.4 million from the sale of the ground to AFC Wimbledon.

AFC Wimbledon gave Kingstonian favourable terms to play at the stadium but need to realise the value of their asset in order to fund a return to their roots. As the pur-chasers of Kingsmeadow, Chelsea were insistent that their plans for the stadium did not include the club that built it. With available land at a premium, the move to Tolworth might be Kingstonian’s best hope of a bright future. fantastic team performance from Cables saw them overcome the disappointment of defeat to Colne. Prescot bounced back from their first defeat in eleven matches to take all three points from high flying Clitheroe who themselves had won nine of their previ-ous ten fixtures in all competitions.

Much like the reverse fixture at Volair Park earlier in the season the game was a very exciting, end to end affair.

Cables had started much the stronger and deservedly took the lead on 12 minutes, Chris Almond keeping his excel-lent recent goal scoring run going, rising unchallenged in the six yard box to head home a corner.

The visitors continued to pepper the home goal and very nearly doubled their lead on 25 minutes, former Clitheroe forward Lloyd Dean drilling an effort off one post before seeing the ball drift agonisingly across goal and wide of the other post.

Just two minutes later saw the first significant decision of the game. Reece McNally was adjudged to have handled a right wing cross and the home side were awarded a penalty. The decision seemed harsh, though it was felt that justice was done when Ben Barnes dived to his left to push away the spot kick from the league’s top scorer Kurt Willoughby.

On 29 minutes the Cables defence was left frustrated once more, Alex Newby was adjudged to be onside and was able to finish with ease past the onrushing Barnes to the anger of the visiting players, Jordan Wynne collecting a yellow card for his protests after a lengthy talking to by the referee.

However, Cables’ lead was restored quickly. On 35 min-utes, Josh Klein-Davies collected James Edgar’s left wing cross, turned excellently in the box before seeing his goal-bound effort deflect off a Clitheroe defender and loop up over goalkeeper Thompson and into the net.

Six minutes into the second period, and after chances at both ends, the killer goal was delivered. Both Almond and Klein-Davies broke the offside trap and as Thompson, who had an excellent game, hesitated Klein-Davies was able to tee-up Almond to stroke the ball into an empty net for his second goal of the match.

Within sixty seconds of the restart, confirmation that it was not to be Clitheroe’s day was delivered. Willoughby’s fine effort came back off the crossbar before Newby’s follow up drew an extraordinary save from Barnes amid claims that the ball had crossed the line from some Clitheroe fans.

McNally became the second Cables player cautioned on 57 minutes after another very lengthy talking to from the referee. The reason for the caution was not immediately apparent but after a much shorter conversation with the match official post game we were able to ascertain that the Cables full back was cautioned for delaying the restart of play.

The major ‘blot on the copybook’ for Cables on the day was the loss of James Edgar on 65 minutes, the winger taking a heavy fall and leaving the ground with his right arm strapped up. There was concern that he may have sustained a collarbone injury.

As the game entered the latter stages Cables introduced Baba Conte from the bench for his first appearance since an extended Christmas break and Matt Hamilton made his debut after his recent signing from Marine replacing the excellent Klein-Davies up top.

In the closing stages Conte was subject to a lengthy con-versation with the referee, and subsequently cautioned, for a rash challenge and the Cables goal once more led a charmed life with a double clearance off the line as the home side pressed. The Cables defence held firm as the away side secured a very satisfying victory.

Skelmersdale United are the latest in a number of clubs to have played their home fixtures here at Volair Park due to their own venue being unavailable. The club has had a number of tenants over the last two

decades, which obviously generates useful revenue. But it also returns a favour extended to Cables more than two decades ago, when Hope Street temporarily stopped being a football ground altogether and instead staged professional Rugby League.

In the summer of 1995, Prescot Cables AFC had no home, no manager and no players. Substantial debts had seen the club evicted from their home of 89 years and was kept alive thanks to the efforts of the then Chairman, Ted Mercer, Vice-Chairman Doug Lace and Doug’s wife, Dot, who became Secretary. Ten home matches were played ‘over the water’ at the Ellesmere Port Stadium before a groundshare was arranged with Knowsley United at Alt Park in Huyton. This stadium had been played out in the late 1960s as a Rugby League ground but the club for whom it was developed – Huyton RLFC – had left the ground in 1984.

It was this club – by then called Highfield – who would take over the ground and rebrand themselves in a des-perate, final, attempt to survive in the era of Super League and summer rugby. Formed as Wigan Highfield in 1902, this club had spent a year playing at White City Stadium as London Highfield before moving to Liverpool. Based in Huyton between 1967 and 1984, they then moved to Runcorn FC’s Canal Street stadium, driven away from Alt Park by vandalism and low crowds. In 1990, Highfield moved to St Helens Town FC’s Hoghton Road ground, but by 1994 were searching for another new home, after the Blues decided to double the rent.

With Hope Street vacant, Highfield seized their oppor-tunity. A brewery loan helped Highfield to secure the site and get the social club up and running and by 1996 Highfield was among the 30 professional clubs to make the switch from winter to summer.

In a bid to establish their identity locally, the rugby club renamed itself ‘Prescot Panthers’ and embraced the amber and black colours so familiar to Cables’ fans. However, the new ground and name did not change the

fortunes of the Panthers, who ended the first season under the new com-petition structure at the bottom of Division Two, having won just two matches all season.

The 1997 season continued in much the same vein; the Panthers again finished bottom of the table. However, their biggest issue was off the field. The brewery whose loan had helped facilitate the move to Hope Street demanded repay-ment and this led to the demise of the club. This was a crushing blow to Panthers’ Chairman, Geoff ‘Piggy’ Fletcher who had been a renowned prop forward and had initially joined Huyton in 1978 as a player. Fletcher then went on to manage the club and perform virtu-ally every other function within it before becoming Chairman. He had

described keeping the club alive for so long as his “greatest triumph” so its eventual extinction would have hurt him deeply.

By then, Cables had left Alt Park themselves and, just as the rugby side had, taken up a groundshare with St Helens Town. Despite their nomadic couple of years, Prescot’s soccer club had stabilised in mid-table within North-West Counties League Division One and the death of the Panthers gave them the chance to return home. A return to Hope Street was eventually secured in the first quarter of 1998 and our ground has been a football stadium ever since. The Prescot Panthers two-year presence in professional Rugby League had become a curi-ous footnote in the town’s sporting history.

In the summer of 1995, Prescot Cables AFC had no home, no manager and no players.”

ave you ever stopped to wonder what would hap-pen to Non-League clubs across the country if they didn’t have any volun-teers?

If the turnstiles had no operator? If the car park had no stewards? If the pro-grammes had no sellers?

As you’re reading this, look around you. It’s highly likely that you’ll be staring at the same faces standing on the terraces and sitting in the stands that you see most weeks. It’s the same for the loyal volunteers that keep Non-League clubs going, but what will happen when they’re unable to continue their roles?

I refer back to an excellent column by the long-serving Northern Premier League chairman Mark Harris in a recent edition of The Non-League Paper. He said: “The biggest challenge for Non-League foot-ball is bringing in more volunteers.

“If I lined up all 68 of my chairman in the NPL and gave them a choice of either £10k in cash or 20 new volunteers, very few would actually take the cash because it’s the volunteers that get you the money. It’s the volunteers that make the community programme work.”

Harris goes on to say that he believes a co-ordinated volunteering initiative is required to bring fresh blood into the lower levels – and he’s spot on.

Non-League clubs couldn’t survive with-out their volunteers, who have pledged an incredible amount of hours into the running of their clubs. But volunteers won’t last forever and a new generation must now be coming through.

Non-League is all about people and that is a recurring word.

The National League system must find a way to engage communities within their local football clubs. By doing so, more people are likely to want to get involved. The next step is having a clear volunteer-ing pathway in place so that people know how and who to approach at their club.

The correct training should be in place so that a volunteer is familiar with the possible roles they could be fulfilling at a football club.

There will be people now who would like to volunteer at their local team but are unsure how to go about doing so. It can often be difficult to approach a club on a matchday, not because staff aren’t willing to help but rather that they are busy. A structure can help eradicate these problems.

If you can, put yourself forward to help out your club. It could only be for a couple of hours each week but it will certainly be appreciated – and you might just enjoy it too!

rescot Cables Football Club is again urging supporters to help shape the future

of the organisation by purchasing a share in the company.

Since 2005, the club has been incorporated as a ‘Community Interest Company’. This means that it’s purpose is not to make a profit; instead, the club exists to represent the town of Prescot and the borough of Knowsley within Senior Football and to serve the local area.

As such, the club has a structure which enables anyone to pur-chase a share in the company. No person may own more than one share and the money paid for that share is converted into a dona-tion to the club after 12 months, at which time we ask those with an interest in the club to renew their involvement by purchasing the share on an annual basis.

This works in a similar way to paying a subscription for club

membership. Purchasing a share entitles club members to attend the Annual General Meeting and help to determine the organisa-tion’s future strategy, including through the election of Board Members.

Last year, more than 300 people paid £5.00 to become a part-own-er of the club. We hope to surpass that in 2018 as the club seeks to build on the many achievements of the preceding 12 months.

You can purchase a share, valid for one year, via the club website at www.prescotcablesfc.com, by completing a registration form at the Club Shop in the bar or by speaking with a club official on matchdays, starting this after-noon.

This club is your club and by pur-chasing a share in it you can play your part in helping it to grow and develop. If you can afford to do so, please consider becoming a part-owner in your club.

rescot Football Club was formed in 1884 and the first organised game of Associa-tion Football ever played in Prescot took place against the second team of a local

St Helens side, St Thomas. Prescot lost 3-1.After playing friendly games for the first five years, Prescot entered the Liverpool & Dis-trict League in 1889. Prescot’s highest finish-ing position in that league was third in 1891-92, the year in which Prescot entered the FA Cup for the first time. A home game against Crewe Alexandra attracted 3,000 spectators to the club’s ‘Slacky Brow’ ground, where Prescot were beaten 7-1.Prescot joined the Lancashire Alliance in 1895 and were champions in 1899-1900. The club finished bottom the following year but joined the higher standard Lancashire League for 1901-02. A ground dispute re-sulted in Prescot dropping out of the league

in 1902-03 and Prescot FC was dormant un-til 1906 when an athletic and football ground was opened at Hope Street and Prescot Ath-letic FC was formed. Prescot Athletic started in the St Helens & District League and won the championship in the first year, after which they joined the Liverpool League for four seasons. The Liverpool County Combination became the Prescot club’s sixth league, in 1911-12. Leagues were suspended in 1914 for the Great War and the post-war Prescot club dropped ‘Athletic’ from its name and joined the Lancashire Combination Liverpool Sec-tion. In their first season, 1918-19, Prescot finished runners-up to Tranmere Rovers but did not fare too well the following season and the club returned to the more locally-based Liverpool County Combination for the 1920-21 season and spent a further seven years in that league. In 1928, the local expanding cable giants,

BICC, donated a magnificent 1,000-seater stand (which was destroyed by fire in 1960) to the club. In what was clearly an early form of commercial sponsorship, the club’s name was changed to Prescot Cables and the team colours became black and amber to commemorate a bit of local industrial history, as the first successful insulated cable drawn at Prescot was covered with black and am-ber paper. Prescot Cables joined the Lanca-shire Combination In 1928-29 and, in 1929, applied to join the Football League Third Di-vision (North), along with four other hopefuls. All the applicants failed, although one, Mans-field Town, was successful two years later.Prescot Cables changed its name to Prescot Town in 1964 but the club struggled and in 1975, it was voted out of the Lancashire Combination. Prescot Town joined the Mid-Cheshire League and won it at the first at-tempt. In 1978-79 they returned to the Cheshire County League, in Division Two,

after an absence of 42 years. Prescot were Division Two champions the following sea-son, with Accrington Stanley as runners-up.In 1980, the name of Prescot Cables was re-taken and in 1982, Cables became a mem-ber of the newly formed North West Counties League where they remained for 20 years. Prescot finished in the top 10 in NWCL Di-vision One in all but one season from 1990 and, in 2001-02, the club had its most suc-cessful season for over two decades, winning the Worthington Challenge Trophy (League Cup) and finishing as Division One runners-up, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One. However, Prescot went one better in 2002-03 and finished as champions of the North West Counties League Division One to win promo-tion to the Northern Premier League Division One. Ground improvements were carried out at Valerie Park (formerly known as Hope Street) to meet the relevant regulations and ensure that Prescot could take their place in the higher league. For the season 2004-05, Prescot found themselves playing at the highest level in their history. Due to a suitable finishing po-sition, and a re-organisation of the National League System, Prescot took their place in the Northern Premier League Premier Divi-sion. As a result of a club being unable to fulfil their fixtures, and after the controversial intervention of the FA, Cables were elevated to fifth position in the final League Table. Ca-bles had the opportunity to gain promotion to what is now called National League North, al-though defeat at Workington in the first play-off game ended that dream - for now! The 2005-06 season was one of consoli-dation with a new football committee being formed from the Supporters Club. The as-sets and liabilities of the old club, Prescot Cables, were transferred over to a new legal entity, namely Prescot Football Club Limited, which continued trading as Prescot Cables Football Club. The new company would sub-sequently be reconstituted as a Community Interest Company owned by more than 300 supporters who each pay a small annual subscription in return for one share. On the pitch, the club produced another mid-table finish in the following season to avoid becoming involved in another non-league ‘shake-up’ that saw two regionalised First Divisions being created within the Northern Premier League ahead of the 2007-08 sea-son. That campaign was a more difficult one and during the club’s final match, Prescot was 15 minutes from relegation. Two late goals secured a win at Lincoln United and survival. Due to how closely contested the division had been, Cables eventually finished in 13th place! Shortly after the season’s end, the ground was purchased by Triman Devel-opments Ltd from a company controlled by a former Chairman of Prescot Cables AFC. The current football club are working on ground improvements in order to provide the team and supporters with an opportunity to move forward.A lacklustre 2008-09 season saw Prescot propping up the Premier Division. Manager Andy Gray departed for Burscough. He was

replaced by Joe Gibiliru who managed to bring some much needed stability to the club as the team finished in mid-table in 2009-10. However, a significant change in personnel meant that Cables initially struggled during the following season. This led to Gibiliru be-ing relieved of his duties around the time of the ‘big freeze’ in December 2010 and as-sistant Dave Ridler took over. He managed to secure Cables’ Northern Premier League status for another season.

The 2011-12 season was a tale of five man-agers. Dave Ridler (who left for Australia in January 2012), Karl Bell and Karl Connolly all took charge for at least one match. Fol-lowing the controversial departure of Shaun Reid to Warrington Town in March 2012, Joe Gibiliru took over for the remaining games. The team and club regrouped after the Reid fiasco to finish the season strongly, defying the odds to remain part of the Northern Pre-mier League.David Powell was the new man in charge for the 2012-13 season and assembled a virtu-ally brand-new squad, which led to inconsist-ency during the early months of the cam-paign. The season was also disrupted by the condition of the playing surface and weather conditions forcing many postponements. When matches finally began in earnest in the New Year, Cables produced one of their most successful periods since the 2002-03 North West Counties League Championship season. A scheme asking donors to sponsor a ‘pitch square’ in order to fund much-needed renovations for the pitch took on a life of its own. In the end the scheme became over-subscribed and has become an annual event which continues to generate vital funds.Circumstances arose that led to David Pow-ell leaving the club ahead of the 2014-15 season. His replacement was Neil Prince, who aged 31 on his appointment, must be the youngest manager in Cables’ history and probably in the League at that time. With limited resources, the team managed to re-tain their membership of the Northern Pre-mier League. The 2015-16 campaign began disastrously, whicht led to Neil Prince being relieved of his duties. In came Andy Paxton, and with the same playing staff, managed to haul the team out of danger and finish the league season in their highest position for some time. Cables also reached the Final of the Liverpool Senior Cup. With the club attracting new and increased sponsorship, including an arrangement which saw Ca-bles’ home ground renamed Volair Park, the club approached 2016-17 in more confident fashion. However, due to work commitments Andy Paxton had to step down from the role of First Team Manager. The club moved swiftly to appoint Brian Richardson. Andy remained in close contact with the club and at the AGM was appointed to the Board of Directors. Initially, the First Team struggled following the change of Manager, but an excellent second half of the season saw the club ease away from the relegation places and win the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first time, defeating Southport in the Final in front of more than 900 spectators.

In what was clearly an early form of com-mercial sponsorship, the club’s name was changed to Prescot Cables in 1928.”
