President’s Message
I was unable to attend the
Nationals, but Mike Walling and Bob Immekus represented us well at the Convention. Congratulations to our officers for the awards SEGTOA won at the Convention. Danny Finklestein and SEGTOA won another award for our Tiger Tales Newsletter. The Trees won another award for our Web Site and Social Media. SEGTOA also won a Silver Award for our GTOAA membership participation. Not bad guys !!! Thanks for all the recruiting that’s been done this year as well. Nice to see
our many new members.
SEGTOA had 4 cars at the Convention. The Askews brought (3) ’64 GTOs !! They won two Silvers and a Gold. Congrats !!!!! Mike Walling won a Gold for his ’67 in the Modified Class (a well deserved award for all of Mike’s hard
work).
We’re having a Board Meeting, as well as a regular meeting at the August Picnic. One of the
items we need to discuss at the meeting, is officers for the upcoming year. If you have some computer skills, we
(Desperately) need to fill the Officer and Board postions noted
below.
As you can see by the number of car cruise notices in this month’s newsletter there is quite a bit going on this summer. One of these, the Holy Smoke BBQ & Car Show, is being run by club member Bo Dunn. Please consider attending this show to
support his efforts.
Hope to see all of you at the August Meeting / Picnic. Mike Walling has a great spot reserved
for us at Red Top Mountain.
Have a great summer and Happy
Motoring!

Doug and Tim Askew were there and Doug won Silver for two of his cars, black 64's one for stock and one for modified. Tim Askew won Gold for his Burgundy 64 Modified. October is when the leaves are changing, what better time to go on a cruise through the
Smokie Mountains? Northeast of Atlanta, on the TN/NC line, there is what’s called the “Tail of
the Dragon”. It is a section of Hwy 129 that spans 11 miles and has 318 curves/turns. Yes
318. It has more turns in an 11 mile span than any other highway in the US so they say. This
too is part of a 120 mile loop in TN/NC that includes the Cherohala Skyway drive. On this loop
is the Fontana Village Resort. We have made arangments at Fontana Village and have a block
of rooms reserved. Room charge is $115 ($145/night including taxes). To reserve your room,
please call the resort directly. After making reservations, please inform Mike Walling so
we can get a head count and plan for lunch/dinner reservations, etc.
A tentative schedule for the cruise/overnighter is below:
● Take 575 north to 76 to 74 to 129.
● We arrive in Robbinsville NC around 11:30 AM. Each lunch at “Lynn’s Place”. Highly
recommended. Get gas too.
● Drive the southern, western, and northern leg of the 120 mile loop (About 100 miles). Scenic casual afternoon drive through the Smokies with elevations over 5,000
feet.
● Arrive at the Fontana Village around 4-4:30 PM.
● Check in to our rooms.
● Dinner/desert and Happy hour at 6 PM.
● Sunday AM Breakfast
Sunday mid-morning, leave and drive the last 25 miles of the “loop” and then head
home.

Tech tips
#1 Price vs. Cost John Link
I’ve had problems with the fuel pump in my ’69 Riviera for the past few years. I’ve had to install 3 fuel pumps in the last 2 years. As some of you know, 1969 was the first year for an in-tank electric fuel pump for Buick. There’s nothing wrong with 12 volt electric fuel pumps, most of today’s cars have in-tank electric fuel pumps (low cost, light weight, etc.). Buick was smart enough to make replacing the pump simple by having an
access panel in the trunk. I’ve replaced my pump so often I feel I could do it with my
eyes closed.
But why I have I had fuel pumps going out regularly? I replace the fuel strainer sock with each new pump (old ones were clean). I’ve replaced my in-line fuel filters even though they flowed properly. I’ve checked the pumps after removal (applied 12v) and
they do not turn or turn very slowly (too slow to pump fuel). I know Classic car fuel tanks can be a problem so I’ve even cut a pump open to see if there’s any debris in the pump. They
were clean.
I’m able use an E2485 fuel pump (a direct fit replacement pump). These pumps are used in hundreds of today’s vehicles. I was blaming the manufacturer for a poor quality product. Chinese Crap, I thought!! But I compared pumps / talked with Technical Services at
Airtex Products (75 yrs in the fuel pump business) and guess what, I had ordered what I thought was an Airtex pump on-line but found that the Company I ordered from in Miami isn’t an Airtex Distributor. I also found that another pump I had recently received had a 2005 date on it !! (I always keep one in the trunk). I normally use Orielly’s Auto Parts and they recently changed to Precision for their pumps. But the one I got last from them
had Airtex stamped on it. Huh?????
So what’s happening?? Are some on-line dealers advertising Airtex Fuel Pumps and selling something else (Cheaply made)? Are
dealers buying OLD-OLD stock (say 2005) and selling as new?? I don’t know, but I can assume that all of that is being done by
someone.
I have purchased on-line to save a buck (a penny saved is a penny earned) but we all have to be aware of WHAT AND FROM WHOM we’re purchasing. Would I have had the fuel pump problems noted if I’d have known who makes a quality pump and made sure I got
that pump?? I don’t know but I think so.
When I replace steering components (tie rod ends, ball joints), I won’t use the store brand. I always specify a brand name like Moog. Why, because it’s a safety issue! Brake and
steering are definitely safety items. Shouldn’t we also specify a known quality brand when we’re buying fuel components. Having the engine starve for fuel on the interstate is definitely a safety issue. Yes, I know that even the big brand names have products manufactured in China but they
have to be in charge of quality
control.
I’m going to be a lot more conscious of the MANUFACTURER and the RETAILER in the
future.
The true cost of an item is not just what you pay for the item but the service it gives you and the cost to replace the item when it fails. How much have the fuel pumps I’ve installed cost me in Frustration , Labor, and
Money? Way too much !!!!

2014 Carmel, IN ARTMOBILIA—Saturday, August 23rd
SEGTOA has been invited to the 8th Annual Carmel Automobilia where the 50th Anniversary of the
GTO will be celebrated with a special class for all GTOs. For those looking for an end of summer
road trip see the information below.
The 8th annual 2014 Carmel Artomobilia is scheduled on Saturday, August 23rd from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The show will once again be held in the historic Arts and Design District in Carmel (Indianapolis), Indiana, which provides a great venue to host the event. The goal of Artomobilia is to showcase classic and performance cars, attract local and regional automotive-related businesses and artists, and to provide a fun day for the car show participants, event volunteers, and families. The cars that participate in the Carmel Artomobilia range from Ford Model A’s to Ferraris, American and European classic and sports cars (1925 to current), Indiana Built Classics (1925 – 1948), super cars, race cars, and muscle cars. Each year’s event attracts different, unique, and historically significant automobiles to help make Artomobilia one of Indiana’s premier car
shows!
The Pontiac GTO will be featured in a special class this year to celebrate GTO’s 50th anniversary. Our goal for this class is to have cars representing all generations of the GTO from 1964 – 1974, and 2004 - 2006. We could use your club’s help to find GTOs from this period
(restored or in well-maintained original condition).
You can visit the website links below for further details and information. Please email me back or
call me on my cell phone if you have any questions.
I hope to see the Southeastern GTO Association at the 2014 Carmel Artomobilia!
Best Regards,
David Renshaw

CARS IN THE MOVIES
Interested in having your car used in movie making?
You can place your car in a registry at
“movietimecars.com”. Some sites want you to pay for a
listing but this site is free. Show your vehicle at no
charge and maybe make a few dollars.
You could become famous, like Ed Bellair !!! His car was
used in a film recently as was
a car owned by a Dixie Buick Club member.
GTO Parts & Services Sources Thank You to Jeremiah Riggio, Bob Mohalley, and Jim Racela for tracking down some useful on-line sources for GTO parts and services. Hopefully these will prove useful to you in keeping your GTO looking like a proper time machine!
