President’s Message
John Link
I want to thank everyone who
made it to our annual picnic—the weather was great, we had plenty of good food, lots of GTOs
and some new faces as well as some we haven’t seen in a while. There’s nothing like a car cruise or special event like the picnic to bring everyone
together!
Can you believe that the summer is almost over? Where did the time go? Seems like just the other day that we were taking the car covers off and changing oil to get ready for
the season.
There’s still plenty of activities left on the calendar though. Our September event, “Hubcaps & History” on Marietta Square should be lots of fun (and have secure parking). Chapter member Bo Dunn is running the “Holy Smoke BBQ and Car Show” (see pg.4), and there are other charity events
happening this month around
town.
How about a nice fall cruise to
enjoy the cool weather and North Georgia colors? Be sure to sign up for our October event—the Tale Of The Dragon cruise/
overnighter.
As Meetings VP Mike Walling mentioned at the picnic, the main hotel, Fontana Resort, is now sold out. There are alternate hotels nearby with the Microtel being the closest, and at a reasonable cost. We hope you
can join us.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

SEGTOA SUMMER PICNIC - August 9, 2014 Red Top Mountain State Park
Despite the threat of rain, we had 51 attendees and 10 Pontiac’s at the annual picnic at Red Top Mountain. No rain
and sunshine in the afternoon. Great turnout and thank you to everyone who braved the forecast to make it a great event!
The raffles brought $75 to the chapter. Steve Hart won a $50 gift card to Summitt Racing and Hope Sorrells won a $100 gift
certificate to Spa Sydell.

October is when the leaves are changing, what better time to go on a cruise through the
Smokie Mountains? Northeast of Atlanta, on the TN/NC line, there is what’s called the “Tail of
the Dragon”. It is a section of Hwy 129 that spans 11 miles and has 318 curves/turns. Yes
318. It has more turns in an 11 mile span than any other highway in the US so they say. This
too is part of a 120 mile loop in TN/NC that includes the Cherohala Skyway drive.
The Fontana Resort is sold out! Alternate hotels and their distance from Fontana
Resort are listed below. Our 120 mile trip/loop will start and end in Robbinsville so the Microtel
Inn is a good choice to stay.
Microtel Inn. 111 Rodney Orr Bypass. Robbinsville NC 28771. 888-293-6793. 20 miles.
Sleep Inn. 500 Veterans Blvd. Bryson City NC 28713. 828-488-0326. 32 miles.
Microtel Inn. 82 Songbird Forest Road. Bryson City NC 28713. 866-767-0278. 33 miles.
Quality Inn. 138 country Hearth Inn Drive. Andrews NC 28901. 866-678-6350. 40 miles.
A tentative schedule for the cruise/overnighter is below:
● Take 575 north to 76 to 74 to 129.
● We arrive in Robbinsville NC around 11:30 AM. Each lunch at “Lynn’s Place”. Highly
recommended. Get gas too.
● Drive the southern, western, and northern leg of the 120 mile loop (About 100 miles). Scenic casual afternoon drive through the Smokies with elevations over 5,000
feet.
● Arrive at the Fontana Village around 4-4:30 PM.
● Check in to our rooms (at Fontana and alternate hotels).
● Happy hour and Dinner/desert at Fontana Dam Resort.
● Sunday mid-morning we will have breakfast in Robbinsville, drive the last 25 miles of the
“loop” and then head home.

Independence Fund Update
May of those who attended the BOPC show this past May
will remember that our chapter was collecting donations to
the Independence Fund - a charity organization dedicated
to providing motorized track chairs to our wounded
veterans. Many other GTOAA chapter were involved in
raising funds for this wrothy cause. Our chapter pledged
to contribute $400.
Below is a Thank You and update from Denny Deal,
Chairperson of the GTOAA Independence Fund Charity
Drive and current president of the Cactus GTOs of Arizona.
“Thank you very much for your response and
donation. This “Drive” has been a real learning
experience. The goal, securing a track chair for a
deserving veteran was easy enough, it’s about
getting the word out and educating not just
ourselves, but our supporters like you because we
ask you to do all of the work. Yes, you know it’s a
worthy cause, and yes since the GTOAA is
supporting it, you understand that this drive is
“above board”, but stepping up and generating a
check for the cause is truly appreciated, and we
hope that once “our chair” is assigned and
delivered, that we will have an opportunity to
meet with and maybe talk to our recipient.
Thanks again for your support.”

CARS IN THE MOVIES
Interested in having your car used in movie making?
You can place your car in a registry at
“movietimecars.com”. Some sites want you to pay for a
listing but this site is free. Show your vehicle at no
charge and maybe make a few dollars.
You could become famous, like Ed Bellair !!! His car was
used in a film recently as was
a car owned by a Dixie Buick Club member.
GTO Parts & Services Sources Thank You to Jeremiah Riggio, Bob Mohalley, and Jim Racela for tracking down some useful on-line sources for GTO parts and services. Hopefully these will prove useful to you in keeping your GTO looking like a proper time machine!
