Tiger Tales Vol. 72, No. 4 June, 2008 Valencia High School PTSA
From thePrincipal…
By the time youreceive this mes-sage, it will be thelast or next to lastweek of the 2007-2008 school year.In retrospect, thisschool year was very satisfying. The multitude of improvements, achievements, and accomplish-ments during a single year may beunprecedented in Valencia’s sev-enty-four year history. A compre-hensive list of accolades in theacademic, athletic, and performingarts arenas is far too extensive togive justice to in this message;however, I do wish to provide yousome highlights since the lastnewsletter.
On the academic front, we ad-ministered well over 1300 Ad-vanced Placement (A.P.) and In-ternational Baccalaureate (I.B.)Exams during the first three weeksof May. This is an amazing statis-tic considering, just ten years ago,we administered only 229 such ex-ams. We are anxiously awaitingthe results which will arrive mid-summer. We anticipate that 45candidates will receive I.B. diplo-mas once the exams are graded. This should place Valencia in thetop three high schools in OrangeCounty, with only our third di-ploma class. In addition, we ex-pect to have 15 to 20 Val Tech Di-ploma recipients. This was indeedan impressive group of seniors.
This spring, Valencia sen-iors were accepted to suchprestigious out-of-state uni-versities as MassachusettsInstitute of Technology,Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia,Cornell, Amherst, CanegieMellon, Georgetown,George Washington, Pur-due, Rutgers, and Welles-
ley. Valencia had an amazingnumber of students accepted to theUniversity of California including17 to Berkeley, 20 to L.A., 33 toSan Diego, 24 to Santa Barbara, and 59 to Irvine. More locally,Valencia had 47 seniors earn ad-mission to Cal Poly Pomona and129 to C.S.U.F. It has yet to betabulated; but, we anticipate thatthe Class of 2008 earned over $2.5million in scholarships.
Newsweek Magazine just re-leased their annual ranking of thetop 1300 high schools in the na-tion. Last year, Valencia wasranked 498 in the nation. Thisyear, we moved up 56 points to aranking of 442. This year, Valen-cia is ranked 8th in Orange County. The only O.C. schools rankedahead of Valencia, in order, areOxford Academy, Troy, Univer-sity, Corona del Mar, Sunny Hills,Mission Viejo, and Northwood.
Athletically, spring of 2008 wasa banner season. Boys’ and Girls’Swimming both captured EmpireLeague Championships. Boys’Tennis was co-champions and oneof only seven high schools in Or-ange County to advance to theC.I.F. Quarterfinals. For the sec-
ond consecutive year, sophomoreCurtis Wu was named the EmpireLeague’s Most Valuable Player.Boys’ Baseball had one of themore successful years in recentmemory. They finished the regularseason 20-7, 2nd in the EmpireLeague, and ranked 10th in OrangeCounty. They advanced to thesecond round of the C.I.F. Play-offs. Boys’ Track and Fieldmissed a league championship byonly 12 points. The team was ledby Talal Khan’s four 1st place fin-ishes. Talal also captured the CIFChampionship in the 1600 meters. In Orange County’s most competi-tive league, Girls’ Softball finishedthird and advanced to the C.I.F.playoffs. Recently, it was an-nounced that Stephanie Hammelwas honored as the 2008C.I.F./Farmers Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In addition, she received the Empire League’sFemale Athlete of the Year.Stephanie will be attending UCIrvine on a full athletic scholarshipnext year.
At the recent Yorba LindaWomen’s Club Art Show, Valen-cia students excelled. EuniceChung took a 1st place in Paintingwhile Will Hass did the same inCeramics. Anai Puente wasawarded a 2nd place in Ceramicsand Denise Araujo a 3rd place. OnMay 9 and 10, under the directionof the new dance advisor, Court-ney Williams, the Valencia Danceteam performed in front of largecrowds in the Valencia Audito-rium. Part of the proceeds was do-
nated to the Colombo Family.Valencia student, Nick Colombo,is currently waging a gallant fightagainst cancer.
I would like to take yet anotheropportunity to thank the localelectorate for recently approvingMeasure A for school moderniza-tion. Valencia is slated for exten-sive upgrades over the next fouryears. We are hopeful that threeprojects will be completed over thesummer break. First and foremostis the renovation of Bradford Sta-dium. District officials are opti-mistic that artificial turf and newlights will be installed for the firstfootball game. In addition, one of
our chemistry labs will be up-graded in order to accommodatecollege-level instruction and labs.Lastly, the quad restroom will beremodeled and enlarged.
Over the past month, I have re-ceived numerous phone calls ande-mails regarding how the currentState fiscal crisis will impact pro-grams at Valencia. As of thiswriting, no programs will be cutfor the 2008-2009 school year. However, the fiscal crisis willlikely manifest itself at Valencia inthe form of more students in eachclassroom, rooms cleaned less of-ten, and longer grass.
In closing, I would like to thankall stakeholders for their continuedsupport. I wish you and your chil-dren a healthy, happy, and restfulsummer. I hope you share my ex-citement for the coming of the2008-2009 school year, and I lookforward to nurturing our continuedpartnership. The entire ValenciaFamily is looking forward to our75th Anniversary next year.
Sincerely,
James E. BellPrincipal

TOP TEN IN THE STATE AGAINScience Olympiad is an international organization devoted to
improving the quality of science education, increasing student in-
terest in science and providing recognition for outstanding
achievement in science education by both students and teachers.

in Science Olympiad Tournaments. These tournaments are rigor-
ous academic interscholastic events that require knowledge of
science concepts, process skills, and science applications.
This year, the Valencia High School Science Olympiad Team
took 2nd
place at the Orange County Regional Competition which
was held at Golden West College. The team then advanced to the State competition at Cal State Long
Beach and earned 10th
place in the ENTIRE STATE!

KHAN IS CIF CHAMPIONCongratulations to Senior, Talal Khan, CIF Champion in the 1600
meters for Division II! Khan did not let the 100 degree temperatures deter
him from his goal of running to win this race. He took over the race go-
ing into the 3rd lap and never looked back. The Loyola runner challenged
and briefly took the lead with 200 meters to go, but Khan responded with
a fierce kick over the final 100 meters to earn the title with a 4:18 clock-
ing. Khan came back later in the day to compete in the 3200 meters. He
was very competitive until the weather and earlier effort took its toll
leaving him in 5th place overall for Divsion II, which is still a pretty good double.
Sean Krinik finished his stellar season competing and finishing 8th in the 400 meter finals. Krinik is
only a Sophomore and had an amazing year in track!
ACADEMIC DECATHALON TEAM DOMINATES COUNTYCOMPETITON AGAIN
Congratulations to Valencia's Academic Decathlon Teams and coaches, Mrs. Kay Kerby and Mr.
Fred Jenkins on their outstanding showing in this year’s competition. Valencia's first team captured
fifth place overall in DIVISION 1 in Orange County and second place in the Super Quiz competition.
Division 1 is the highest and most difficult division in the county and Valencia is the only school in the
district to compete in this top division. The second team captured ninth overall, also in DIVISION 1,
and fifth in Super Quiz. Under the leadership of Mr. Kerby and Mr. Jenkins, Valencia's Academic De-
cathlon Team has not ever placed lower than the seventh place in Division 1 over the past ten years.

TIGER WEBSITE HITS MILESTONEAfter the Valencia website posted the ASB election results last Fri-
day, there was a huge number of “hits” on the site and that put us
over the THREE MILLION hit mark. The site has only been up for 2
_ years and that is an incredible amount of traffic for the site. The
teacher pages and homework pages are the biggest/most accessed
pages. The News and Daily Bulletins are also viewed a lot. A huge
TIGER thank you to our webmaster, Mrs. Sue Sawyer for all her
hard work in making our site such a success.

TIGERS HEAD TO SPANISH CAMPValencia students will be attending Spanish
Camp sponsored by the Foreign Language Asso-
ciation of Orange County. The amp has been
held every year for the last 20 years. The Tigers
began participating three years ago. FLAOC also
sponsors a German campand a French camp and
they are also held at the Presbyterian Conference
Center in Big Bear. Last year, we had 30 students attend and this year we will have 17. Spanish teachers,
Ms. Paola Ledezma, Mr. Steve Picht and staff member, Ana Avila will be chaperoning the students on
this trip where they will speak only Spanish and they will be learning dances, recipes, songs and culture
from Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.
TIGER PRIDE DAY REALLY SHINES Tiger Pride Day was a huge success! We had 150 staff and stu-
dents painting walls, doors, tables, fences, and railing through-
out the campus. We also had teams who cleaned our golf carts
and helped organized the drama storage closets. Thank you to
all who participated. ASB, NHS, PAL and Drama all made
major contributions that made TPD (Tiger Pride Day) a great experience.
Special thanks to Mr. Jim Bell, Mr. Joey Davis, Mrs. Cathy German, Mrs.
Carolyn Douglas, Mr. Jason Parker, Mr. Leonard Takahashi, Mr. Frank
Borgese, Mrs. Grace Stanton, Mrs. Michele Zaldin, and Mr. Rigo Flores for
giving of their time to work along side the kids. A special thanks to Mr. Rick
Lopez who organized the event. We could not have done it without you. As you walk through campus,
you will notice the many projects accomplished to help Valencia shine.
TIGER ALUM GOES TO THE OLYMPICS AGAIN!!!Julie Swail-Ertel, VHS Alumnus, Qualifies for Beijing Olympics
Former VHS Tiger of the Year, Julie Swail-Ertel was a member of the VHS
Swimming and Water Polo teams has again qualified for the Olympic team. To
make the Olympic team twice would be remarkable in itself but this Tiger is
way beyond remarkable! Swail-Ertel isn’t competing in the same Olympic sport,
this time she has made the team as a triathlete!
Swail-Ertel was discovered by übermaster Bill Leach (who now produces the
Pacific Coast Triathlon and the OC Triathlon in Mission Viejo). She came from
the world of big time women's water polo where she was the captain of the sil-
ver-medal-winning US Women’s Water Polo team at the 2000 Olympics in
Sydney, Australia and was captain and coached at UC Irvine. She was left off
the last Olympic water polo team and that provoked her to switch to triathlon.
She pulls out the big victory when she needs to. She's the reigning Pan Ameri-
can Triathlon Champ (2007) and she won the Cancun World Cup this past November. We are very
proud to have a VHS TIGER represent us in the Olympics twice and you can bet that the thousands of
Tigers around the U.S. will be cheering her on as she competes in Beijing.
STEPHANIE HAMMEL EARNS MORE AWARDSSenior Tennis star, Stephanie Hammel was recently named the Empire League
Athlete of the Year, the CIF Southern Section Scholar Athlete of the Year and the
California Athletic Directors Association Athlete of the Year. She has an overall
GPA of 4.48 while playing sports and being enrolled in the rigorous International
Baccalaureate Program. Way to go, Stephanie!
Dance Celebration 2008
“We Will Dance for Nick”The VHS Dance squad presented
their best show in years and raised
money for a good cause in the process.
The show titled, “Dance Celebration
2008 - "We Will Dance for Nick" was
the perfect combination of fun and
purpose. The fun part was watching
the dancers perform. Whether it was a
solo, pair, small or large team – it was
incredible. The many hours of practice really showed in their expertise and variety of dance styles in-
cluding hip hop, jazz, lyrical and many original choreographed routines. The show ran two nights, May
9th
and 10th
and played to a packed house.
The packed house helped with the purpose part of the event. The dancers raised money to assist Va-
lencia Senior, Nick Colombo and his family. Two dollars from each ticket was donated to help our
“fighting Tiger” in his battle against cancer. It was a generous gesture to the support the family and it
wasn’t the only one. Several local restaurants and families have sponsored “Nick Nights” where a por-
tion of the proceeds have been donated to the family including First Class Pizza and the Michaels
family - owners of the Farmer’s Boys Restaurant in Brea. We are thrilled to report that Nick has
been feeling well enough that he and his family have been able to attend many of these events. Con-
gratulations to the Boys Hip Hop Team, the Girls Dance Team and their advisor, Ms. Courtney Wil-
liams and coaches and choreographers on an outstanding production and for their bigheartedness.
To learn more about Nick please visit: http://www.carepage.com . You will see a place to join (free),
and then search for NICKS NOTES.

scored three runs to help insure the win. Bartczak pitched five
solid innings to record his 8th

guez pitched the final two scoreless innings, striking out two

Valencia ASB Earns Nation’s Highest Student CouncilAward for Third Consecutive Year
The Tiger ASB Student Council has done it again! For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and
activities that serve to improve the school and community, Valencia High School has been awarded a
2008 Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils. Valencia
High School is one of only 133 schools nationwide to receive a 2007 Gold Council of Excellence Award.
The Tigers are also the only school in California to EVER earn this award and they have earned it
for the third year in a row.
To meet the requirements for the award, a student council must demonstrate that it meets a variety of
criteria. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic
election process, and membership in NASC, schools that qualify for the award demonstrate such things
as leadership training for council members, teacher/staff appreciation activities, student recognition pro-
grams, school and community service projects, spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning, and ac-
tive participation in their state and national student council associations.
“Receiving an NASC Council of Excellence Award indicates a dedication on the part of the local
school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program,” says Rocco Marano, director of
NASC. “NASC applauds the work of the Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their
exemplary efforts to serve their schools as the elected representatives of their student body.”
“We are extremely proud of the job that our Activities Program does on our campus and in the com-
munity,” said Jim Bell, Valencia’s Principal. “We are extremely honored to have not only been recog-
nized for with the (California Directors of Activities) CADA Outstanding High School Activities Pro-
gram of the Year for the past eight years, but also to have earned this the most prestigious award in the
nation - the Gold Council of Excellence Award for the third year in a row.”
Students’ “Extracurriculars” Hinder Academic SuccessAs teachers we are obviously not the students parents, but we see student’s actions at school that
sometimes can be easily corrected at home.
For example, many students often come into class practically falling asleep. When I talk with them
about why they are so tired, 99% of the time they say they were up until 1 or 2 in the morning or later
texting their boyfriend or girlfriend on their phone or “IM’ing” (Instant Messaging them) or using My
Space on their computers. My questions to the parents are:
• How can we work together to ensure that the students are getting enough sleep?
• Do the parents even know how to check the phone records to see the time of day their child is using the
phone or texting?
• Do the students really need to have a cell phone once they get home?
• Why are computers in the student’s room hidden from parental use?
These issues really affect the student’s ability in the classroom and they are very forthright when tell-
ing their teachers that they do this because their parents/guardians never check.
They think it is pretty funny that they can just tell their parent they won’t do it again and their parents
will believe them and not take any further action. Unfortunately, such betrayal of a parent’s trust and
faith leaves the parent in the difficult position of becoming a tyrant or abdicating responsibility alto-
gether.
This is one sided, obviously, but I am certain we could work together here to find a way to come to a
happy median so that students can perform better at school without being so dog gone tired from staying
up so late at home.
Media Production Class to Feature Short FilmsThursday, June 5
th Valencia High School Media Production’s class will be showcasing student’s short
films in the auditorium beginning at 6 pm. The films include short narrative, montage, music video and
documentary and highlight the works of two of teacher Grace Stanton’s classes.
Wildlife Club Wraps Up a Year for the AnimalsThe Wildlife Conservation Club’s goal is to help support endangered animals and their environment
by joining with the World Wildlife Fund to donate money to help out their cause. The goal for the clubis to aid at least five various animals and raise enough money to donate to the World Wildlife Fund. Each monthly meeting, the members are informed about a different endangered animal and research onthe Internet to find ways to help out. One way that the Wildlife Club fundraised money for the animalswas joining in the monthly Food Fair at lunch by making homemade goods to sell to students. This year, the Wildlife Club was able to enjoy the benefits of going to the Los Angeles Zoo due to aspecial ZOOPALS scholarship. This scholarship enabled the members to have free transportation andadmission into the zoo. On May 20th, 2008 the students enjoyed a docent guided tour teaching themvarious facts about the animals and even became aware of many more which were endangered. Over$400 will be sent this year to the animals and the members look forward to continuing on the tradition ofinforming the community how endangered animals need our help.
