From the Pastor and Teacher
Dear Friends,
One surefire way to get a group to stop talking, say, before a meal or a church meeting, is to ask, “Who will offer a prayer?”
There are exceptions. If you’re a regular at the Tuesday or Thursday morning Bible studies, you know that most members of the group, after only a slight pause, will invite God’s blessing. As one who is often asked to pray, I appreciate hearing prayers from others. Truly, we are all equally close to God — and it a true gift of being in a faith community is hearing the intimate words of prayer from people we care for.
Often, I hear that the reluctance to pray is that “I don’t know how to do it well.” Well, here’s one example that you might hang onto:
Dear God: So far today I have done all right. I have kept my mouth shut. I have not gossiped, yelled, or lost my temper. I have not been greedy, grumpy, hasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I am really glad about that.
But in a few minutes, God, I really must get out of bed. From then on I’m going to need a lot more help. Thank you. Amen.
Phillips Brooks, over a century ago, used to pray for the grace to both rise above criticisms as well as to resist firing them back.
“Oh, God,” he prayed, “give the strength to live another day.
Keep me from losing faith in people. Keep me sweet and sound,
in spite of occasional ingratitude and meanness. Above all, keep
me from giving little stings, and minding them.”

Operation Love is part of the Parish Life committee
and is headed by Carolyn Lombardo. Carolyn is in
charge of organizing volunteers for making and
bringing dinners to members in need. Patty Chaffee,
our Community Minister, usually lets Carolyn know of
people who are in need of a meal(s) or members
often will bring the needs of others to her attention.
If you would like to be on the helping end of this
wonderful committee, she is always looking for new
people she can call to help provide a meal. She
rotates the volunteers so the actual commitment is
about 3-4 times per year.
If you need, or know of someone who is in need of
this support, or would like to help out, Carolyn
Lombardo can be reached at (860) 739-3405.

Inspiring Generosity…
We are surrounded by those who inspire us to give, work, and live generously.
Honoring the Gifts of Carol Vara
Carol Vara feels called to helping singles find a date or even a soul mate through her monthly program offered at Niantic Community Church. The free program, Christian Singles & Dating is held the third Wednesday of each month from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and all are welcome.
As a social worker at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, Carol’s career has always been about helping people. She received her master of social work from Salem State College in 1992 and after a short stint in a school, she accepted a position as medical social worker at L&M. Over the past few years she has been offering a dating program through New London Adult Education, but stumbled upon a bit of insight after attending the now defunct, Spirited Singles group at NCC.
“I feel an urgency to help others,” says Carol. “I know what they are dealing with. I’ve been divorced. I’ve been there. Here at church there is a spiritual component that I can’t do at adult ed. I feel very comfortable with that. People don’t think about how their faith can help in the dating process. But God is with us on this journey.”
She offers a few suggestions for those who are interested in dating, for the first time or for the first time in a long time.
1. Have a positive attitude
2. Be friendly and smile
3. Make it known that you are available
4. Don’t try too hard
5. Ask yourself what you might do differently
For more details about these ideas she invites people to come to her program. She suggests instead of going through a drive through for your morning coffee, try going into a coffee shop and sit down and relax a few minutes. No one will chase you down in your car but they might strike up a conversation over a mocha latte at a table.
“Belief in God on this journey can open us up to possibilities, but there has to be intention.”
Carol grew up Catholic but is now a member of NCC. She remarried in 2012 after meeting her husband Edward Kardys on Match.com, but her mission to help people celebrate the dating life with success continues.
To learn more about her program call Niantic Community Church located at 170 Pennsylvania Avenue, Niantic, (860)739-6208 or drop in any one of her sessions the third Wednesday of each month.

Anything Goes …minimize, simplify, organize
How it works: 1. Bring unwanted items that you want to give away. If
you can carry it, you can bring it. Bring as much as you want.
2. Bring one non-perishable food item for the NCC Food Pantry and a brown bag lunch to enjoy following the exchange.
3. Each participant offers their items in turn. See what others have to give away and claim all you want. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity immediately following our gathering.
Why?
1. Because it’s an opportunity to clean out, get organized. Letting go of what we no longer want/need, makes room for what IS important to us.
2. Discover the spirituality of being organized during thoughtful reflections and discussion over lunch.
3. Break bread and enjoy fellowship with like minded souls.
4. Support the NCC emergency food pantry.

History Quiz Answer
In 1639 people from Saybrook began to settle on the east side of the Connecticut River then called East Saybrook. By 1664, as church going was a part of their lives and getting over the river to Saybrook could be extremely difficult, they petitioned the Connecticut General Court to become their own plantation. On February 13, 1665 an agreement was signed by representatives of both sides of the river which became known as The Loving Parting". The name of Lyme probably came from Lyme Regis in England which some of the settlers had ties to. It was in 1718 that the people living in this area also decided that the 9 miles to church in Lyme was a burden and petitioned the Court to become a separate church. In 1719 we became the 2nd or East Ecclesiastical Society of Lyme.

A Forum to Discuss a Resolution Concerning Mass Incarceration
for Non-Violent Offenses
A forum will take place on Sunday, March 8th at 3:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. Some excerpts from the resolution:
“Whereas the United States has the highest
rate of incarceration in the world, 6 to 10 times greater than other wealthy industrialized nations, and surpassing in both absolute and
per capita terms countries such as Russia, China, Cuba, and Iran; and
“Whereas rates of incarceration in the U.S. quintupled in the past 40 years, with persons of color…incarcerated in vastly
disproportionate numbers, more than half for non-violent crimes, and receiving longer sentences than white persons for the same
offenses;
“Therefore be it resolved that we…call upon
members of Connecticut Conference Churches to express to all elected officials in our local communities, our state, and our
nation that this system of mass incarceration is unjust and a morally outrageous abuse of human rights.”
All are encouraged to attend, become informed about forces creating injustices in our criminal justice system, discover ways in which other states have
been successful in reducing incarceration rates while at the same time improving public safety, and find out how we in Connecticut can create a Department
of Corrections that rehabilitates instead of warehouses non-violent offenders.
